Fiscal planning pays off Bloomington School District ‘in good shape’ as board passes budget BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A decrease in revenue and deficit spending can be causes for concern, but the 201112 Bloomington School District budgets should not be viewed as a reason to hit the panic button, district officials insist. “The district is in good shape,” according to Rod Zivkovich, the executive director of finance and support services. Despite a $3 million decrease in revenue and a 3 percent increase in expenditures for the coming fiscal year, the district’s budget plan is “a reasonable budget for the district,” he said. The Board of Education concurred, approving the 2011-12 budget unanimously during a special meeting June 27. “Even in the most uncertain of times, the school board was able to approve a budget that is both realistic and flexible,” Board Chairman Chuck Walter said. “Very few school districts are in this enviable position.” The district will use deficit spending to

honored for inventiveness BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER In Dick Thorud’s world of ideas, there’s always a better way. During his 34 years as a design and research engineer for the Toro Company, building a better lawn mower or snow thrower was his goal. Creative problem-solving was his method. “I didn’t know that they would work,” said Thorud of his inventions. “That’s the excitement of the whole thing, that sometimes you can come up with great ideas. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.” Thorud was a prolific inventor, earning 78 U.S. and international patents, said Larry Buckley, division counsel for Toro. Many of Thorud’s innovations are still used in Toro products and they played an important part in the company’s success in the residential lawn mower and snow thrower markets, Buckley said. Last year, the Bloomington-based company reported $1.7 billion in sales.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Thorud was inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in June. The Bloomington resident retired from Toro in 2000. Working as senior principal research engineer at Toro’s research and development unit, Thorud was free to explore ideas and research market trends before developing full-size prototypes and testing them in the field. But he also worked on projects assigned by the marketing department, with the goal of creating high-quality products that consumers would buy. Thorud drew on his art training to fuel his creativity. As a student at South High School and Augsburg College in Minneapolis, he took courses in art as well as advanced math and science, and later earned a fine arts undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota. “I had dual interests. I liked the creative freedom you had in art and I also liked the discipline that came in mathematics and INVENTOR: TO NEXT PAGE

Inventor FROM PREVIOUS PAGE sciences,” said Thorud, 77. Although Thorud didn’t have an engineering degree, his curiosity and enthusiasm for learning spurred him to take short courses at area colleges in fields like hydraulics, plastics and internal combustion engines. Art was a key to his success. He created concept sketches and built miniature clay models in his office, effective tools to persuade co-workers and bosses that his concepts would work in the real world. He created a cartoon strip modeled after the “Calvin and Hobbes” comic series to explain the then-novel concept of mulching. “I was able to visualize things in my mind and see them working,” he said. “You have an affinity for spatial relationships.” That talent set Thorud apart from other engineers or technicians, said Buckley, a former Toro patent attorney. “He just had this kind of artistic flair about inventing,” Buckley said. “He worked at that interface between technology and the arts.” Buckley also remembers Thorud as softspoken and modest. ”I can’t recall him ever promoting himself,” Buckley said. “Dick

was always promoting his inventions, which you kind of have to do when you’re in research and development.” Many of Thorud’s innovations were commercial successes, but he’s proudest of the ones that enhanced product safety or benefitted the environment. In 1969, Thorud developed the “Guardian” line of mowers, which incorporated safety features designed to prevent foot injuries and damage caused by debris thrown out of the mower’s path. For the first time, rear safety shields and foot guards were added to the machines, and led to the development of new federal safety standards for the industry, he said. The “Recycler” mulching system for lawn mowers was developed by 1988. Before, grass clippings were collected in bags and hauled away to landfills, creating tons of waste. The new system chopped up the grass clippings into smaller pieces that could decompose and fertilize the lawn. Since retiring, Thorud has had more time to spend with his wife Darlene, two adult children and five grandchildren. He’s also filling his time with creative projects, including a one-man show of his photographs scheduled for early 2012 at the Bloomington Art Center. He’s also written, illustrated and self-published 10 books and is working on a 500-page book about creativity. Creativity has always played an impor-

Attempted theft A 29-year-old Stillwater man had bags packed for departure but was arrested when he failed to pay for them, and their contents. The man was arrested June 25 after attempting to steal two suitcases filled with merchandise from Target, 2555 W. 79th St., Stehlik said. Store security personnel observed the man walking through the store with two suitcases, concealing merchandise within them. When he was finished he went to the front of the store, set the bags down near the entrance and exited the building, Stehlik explained. The man entered his truck, drove

A 33-year-old Chaska woman is accused of charging $60,000 worth of personal goods and services to a company credit card belonging to her former Bloomington employer. The woman was arrested June 24, about eight months after she was terminated from her job at T-Mobile, 7946 Penn Ave. S. Bloomington Police were contacted in December 2010 by a T-Mobile corporate investigator regarding the suspected theft, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The company claimed that the suspect, who was fired in October, had used a company credit card between 2007 and 2010 for personal expenses. The losses were not immediately detected because the woman allegedly falsified company expense reports to conceal her activity.

Bloomington man who claimed kidnapping faces misdemeanor BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS It took a SWAT team to arrest an Eden Prairie man suspected of kidnapping in April, but it’s the Bloomington man who made the claim that is facing criminal prosecution. The suspect, a 47-year-old Bloomington man, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime. Bloomington Police were dispatched to the defendant’s residence in the early morning hours of April 21, in response to a reported assault involving a gun, according to the criminal complaint. The defendant told police that he answered his door at approximately 2 a.m., thinking it was his neighbor. Instead the man at the door was his ex-boyfriend, with whom he had recently ended a longterm relationship, and had an order for protection against, the complaint said. The defendant said his ex-boyfriend forced him to leave his Bloomington residence by vehicle, but he escaped in Minneapolis by biting his ex-boyfriend and running from the vehicle to a nearby gas station and calling 911.
His alleged captor was a 47-year-old Eden Prairie man. Bloomington police contacted Eden Prairie police at approximately 3:40 a.m. Police went to the man’s Eden Prairie residence, but he refused to come out of his home. The Eden Prairie SWAT team formed a perimeter around the house and a negotiator was called to the scene. After a standoff, the negotiator was able to talk the suspect out of his home without incident, and he was taken into custody about 9:45 a.m. The Eden Prairie man was transported to Bloomington and booked on suspicion of kidnapping and assault, but released later that day without being charged. He told police a very different story about the events that transpired prior to his arrest, according to the complaint. The Eden Prairie man said that he had been at the defendant’s apartment building during the evening of April 21, looking for another friend. He instead encountered the defendant and his female neighbor, the complaint said. The trio went to a liquor store for KIDNAP: TO PAGE 15

Governor, legislature get a big red “F” So let’s say you blow a fuse in your brain and you’re rushed to the hospital. When you get there, the doctor informs you he can’t operate today. He had a dispute with his wife over breakfast. When he arrived at the hospital, he had a dispute with chief of staff. There was no way to resolve the disputes so sorry, you have to die. That might be a bit overdramatizing what a state government shutdown is all about, but you get the idea. The Minnesota Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton refused to operate and we – all of us reading this who helped elect them and who pay their salaries – are the losers. If you have someone who refuses to do his or her job like the physician referenced above, the answer is simple. “You’re fired,” to quote Donald Trump. Unfortunately, we have to wait until the next election cycle
PAUL WAHL Senior Managing Editor Sun Newspapers
to “fire” any of our politicians. And voters have notoriously short memories. My best guess is this shutdown won’t even be a topic during the upcoming campaigns. Any elected official on either side of this issue who believes the people of Minnesota are going to buy either argument for failing to avoid a state shutdown may be wearing some hefty rosecolored glasses. Conservative, moderate or liberal, Minnesotans understand what it means to “do good work,” as Garrison Keillor is fond of saying. What happened July1, 2011, does not represent “good work” on the part of any-
one. They didn’t “get-er-done,” as Larry the Cable Guy would say. Perhaps Minnesota’s politicians need to take a page from the old NASA handbook. “Failure is not an option.” You remember those days, no doubt, when we all of us had differences of opinions but compromised to accomplish the goal. But when it meant saving the lives of three astronauts, no one at NASA was willing to give up and shut down operations in Houston. The best face that can be put on the entire injustice is that cooler heads will prevail over the long holiday weekend and an agreement can be reached Tuesday. This is being written Friday morning to accommodate short holiday print deadlines here at the newspaper. What happens once the lights are turned back on is up to us as taxpayers and voters. If “crisis
management” is your preferred form of governance, then you should fold your hands over your chest and laugh heartily at everyone who was harmed in the process. If your sense of fair-play and propriety has been breached, the ball is now in your court. You can yawn and walk away … politics as usual … or you can stand up and let your thoughts be known. Whatever side of the political aisle you are on, the sad fact remains that the legislature and the governor were given a job to do and they failed to do it. The patient died. Most of us were prepared to live with whatever was decided, but to simply not decide is unacceptable. As a taxpayer and their employer, clearly the governor and legislature have earned a “fails to meet minimum expectations” rating.
Across state lines: When sports meet life Moving across state lines is a complicated endeavor. When sports allegiances are brought into the equation, it makes for a complete mess. I moved from Eau Claire, Wis. to the Twin Cities metro area three years ago. I was never more aware of this than on a recent trip to Milwaukee to take in a Minnesota TwinsMilwaukee Brewers game with my wife, sister and her husband. I have been a Green Bay Packers fan since age seven, but never bothered to hop on the Brewers bandwagon. Born in Ohio, I was a Cincinnati Reds fan, but renounced all baseball ties after the strike in the mid1990s. In 2008, the Brewers made the playoffs for the first time since I was born. My faith was renewed, and I followed every game that season with a band-

wagon fervor that Minnesota sports fan can appreciate. In the few years following, I have followed the Brewers while at the same time rooting for the Twins. I warmed up to the Twinkies because of their lowkey but talented clubhouse, and I could justify rooting for them since their rivalry with the Brewers had largely become defunct save for two annual inter-league series. My sports allegiances were put to the ultimate test when these two teams faced off on a recent Saturday night in
Milwaukee. Going into the game, the allegiances of my wife, sister and her husband were set in stone. My wife is a diehard Twins fan and life-long Minnesota resident, and my sister and her husband are casual sports fans and default Brewers fans by location. It was up to me. Do I root for the Brewers and alienate my wife, or root for the Twins and turn my back on my home state? I made my decision and let’s just say I’m still married, even if it killed a little part of my soul. Unfortunately, at least that night, I made the wrong decision. The Brewers crushed the Twins 11-1 in Game 2 of a series the Brew Crew ended up sweeping. Each time the Brewers scored a run, the fans at Miller Park stood up and roared. I remained seated, slightly deflat-
ed, but secretly gloating in the Brewers success that day. No matter your team affiliation, it was easy to see that on that day, the Milwaukee Brewers were the better team. Had the Twins not had half their roster on the disabled list, the outcome could have been much different. In any case, I am over the crushing defeat, and look forward to rooting for both teams the rest of the season. That said, my love of baseball will never be as strong as when I rooted for the Reds in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Football has permanently replaced it in my heart. Even though I was embarrassed with my decision two weekends ago, I can rest easy knowing that the Green Bay Packers are the NFL Super Bowl Champions.

Collegiate newspaper abandons print edition BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS As far as funerals go, there wasn’t much sadness. The Normandale Community College newspaper, Lions’ Roar, published its last edition in April. The paper, which dates back more than four decades, was published once every three weeks, featuring many of the traditional articles and features common to collegiate newspapers. But like major daily and community weekly newspapers around the country, the leadership of Lions’ Roar has stopped the presses. The student media, however, isn’t going away. Since 2004 the college’s newspaper staff has had an online presence in addition to its traditional newspaper. There were several reasons why it made sense to shift the focus to the online content and away from the print product, according to faculty advisor Mark Plenke. “This is a generation of people wedded to their iPhones,” Plenke said. Whether it be through a mobile device or a traditional computer, the Lions’ Roar website garners more than 1,000 unique visitors per month, he said. Conversely the newspaper
staff is recycling a greater percentage of the 2,000 papers printed every three weeks, he explained. With the shift to an online format the Lions’ Roar staff will function more like a daily newspaper staff, according to Plenke. Without collegiate sports to cover each week and little opportunity to cover breaking news for its print product, Lions’ Roar has operated more like a magazine, Plenke explained. Students have compensated by exploring perspectives about what happens on campus, but the end of the print product will bring a change in emphasis. Instead of the website being secondary to the print product, it will now be the sole focus of staff writers, allowing a focus similar to that of a daily newspaper, he said. It was a change that wasn’t possible without discontinuing the print product, he noted. Providing daily content online in addition to articles for the print edition was more work than the Lions’ Roar staff could handle. “It’s twice as much work, or more,” he said. Most agreed, “This is the right time to do this.” Discontinuing the print edition was

not an economic decision. Sure, students were picking up the newspaper with less frequency, but the Lions’ Roar staff has an advantage over its commercial counterparts, it is the beneficiary of student fees to fund its staffing and daily operations. Advertising sold within the paper was comparable to the cost of printing it, so the news gathering functions shouldn’t be affected by the loss of print advertising revenue, Plenke explained.
The challenges of overseeing a digital news staff will be similar, however, to the challenges of the past several years. Plenke – a communications department instructor – has been the Lions’ Roar advisor since 2003. Unlike four-year campuses where newspaper staffs are comprised largely of journalism department students, the Lions’ Roar staff is comprised NEWSPAPER: TO PAGE 9

Newspaper FROM PAGE 7 of students who may have taken communications classes at the college, but haven’t had the benefit of two or three years of rigorous journalism instruction. “These are students who have not made up their mind about what their careers are going to be, for the most part,” he said. In addition to teaching students how to construct a news article rather than an essay, there’s an annual turnover rate of
about 90 percent, sometimes as high as 75 percent between semesters, he said. Some students do move on to a fouryear school and pursue a journalism degree as a result of their Normandale experience, Plenke noted. The college will be introducing five new digital media courses next year, so the conversion of the paper goes hand-inhand with that, Plenke explained. As they think about media careers, “this will be a better training ground for students,” Plenke said. The Lions’ Roar website is lionsroar.info.

Fur coat thief from Brooklyn Park pleads guilty Woman hid coat under dress while in custody BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A 47-year-old Brooklyn Park woman who hid a fur coat under her dress while in police custody pleaded guilty to felony theft. Stephanie T. Moreland will be sentenced Aug. 9, according to court records. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Moreland was arrested Dec. 31, 2010, accused of stealing a $6,500 fur coat from Alaskan Fur Company of Bloomington. After spending her New Year’s Day weekend in a Bloomington Police Department jail cell, Moreland was interviewed by an investigator Jan. 3. She initially told police she didn’t take the coat, but later claimed she had sold the coat prior to being arrested, according to the criminal complaint. When told by an investigator that she would be charged with felony theft while in custody – meaning a trip to Hennepin County Jail in downtown Minneapolis for
booking – Moreland produced the midlength mink coat from underneath her dress. Police searched Moreland – who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 270 pounds – following her arrest, but the search failed to turn up the coat, which had been tucked into her underwear. Moreland was one of two suspects in the New Year’s Eve coat theft. She entered the store at the same time as another man, and the two split up immediately upon entering the store. The man was talking on a cell phone while inside the store, and it appeared to store employees that the duo was attempting to distract store employees, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. A pillar inside the store helped screen Moreland from the view of store employees. An employee approached her as she appeared to be stuffing a coat up her dress while kneeling on the floor. When confronted by the employee, Moreland said she had not taken a coat, lifting the back of her dress to show that she did not have the coat concealed. It appeared to the employee that the woman was not wearing underwear, according to the complaint.
The duo left the store and drove off with another man in a waiting vehicle outside. Employees were able to provide a vehicle description, including a license plate number, to police. A Bloomington police sergeant spotted the vehicle near Mall of America and conducted a traffic stop. A hanger from Alaskan Fur Company was found inside the vehicle, but not the coat, according to the complaint. The trio was arrested, but the two men were eventually released since Moreland claimed they had no knowledge of the theft, Stehlik said. After giving up the coat nearly 72 hours after her arrest, Moreland told police that she had removed the back of her underwear so that when she lifted the back of her dress it would appear that she was not wearing underwear and therefore had no place in which to conceal the coat, according to the complaint. Since there was no suspicion of drugs during the arrest, the search was limited to an external pat down of Moreland and use of a handheld metal detector to eliminate the possibility that she had a weapon, Stehlik said.

Corporate CEO is also leader of west metro Mormons Schneiber finds similarities between corporate, spiritual roles BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kurt Schneiber is the CEO of a major financial services company. He speaks Finnish and Arabic. He’s lived in Greece, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. None of those accomplishments compare with the pleasure he derives from his position as newly appointed president of the Minneapolis Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Like most leaders in the Mormon church, his work is entirely voluntary. “We believe everyone has a calling or an assignment in the church,” said Schneiber, who began his term earlier this year. “I will serve as I am needed.” As stake president, he and his fellow leaders are responsible for roughly 3,100 of the 30,000 Mormons in Minnesota. His congregations include Waconia, Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Plymouth, Minnetonka and several in
Minneapolis. Primarily his work consists of helping Mormons with spiritual matters, Schneiber says, but the role also includes responsibilities for the physical upkeep of churches in his area, as well as significant financial oversight duties. He sees parallels between his day job as CEO of Minneapolis-based Syncada, which provides business-to-business network solutions to financial institutions, and being a stake president. “In both roles, I organize and help people coalesce on common objectives,” said Schneiber, who lives just across the Eden Prairie border in Chanhassen and has been a Mormon most of his life. At Syncada the objective is making the business more successful; with the church the goal is helping people experience a closer walk with God. Just as he might hire a coach to help an employee reach a new skill level at Syncada, he and his helpers work to improve the lives of Mormons in their care. “The calling of stake president is an awesome responsibility, and there are specific things that only a stake presi-
dent can do,” said Mark Van Wagenen of Minnetonka, one of two counselors to Schneiber. “Our opportunity is to help Kurt by doing as much of everything else as possible.” Counselors work closely with the leaders of the stake auxiliary organizations. They are also called upon to speak during Sunday services, said Chris Neilson of Eden Prairie, Schneiber’s other counselor. Both have great respect for
Schneiber. “He is one of the most humble, spiritual and fun-loving guys I know,” said Neilson. “He loves to serve and he loves people.” Van Wagenen said he admires Schneiber’s love for Jesus Christ as well as the members of the stake, along with his ability to administer and organize. Neither of the counselors is paid by MORMON: TO PAGE 17

Uniform drive focuses on blue Cub Scout version BY JONATHAN YOUNG SUN NEWSPAPERS More than 5,000 children join Cub Scouts each year in the Northern Star Council, the division of the Boy Scouts that serves the Twin Cities and beyond. That means a lot of the familiar blue-shirt uniforms are needed to clothe all those green scouts. But not every scout’s family can afford a uniform. Enter Brooklyn Park-based Pilgrim Cleaners and its fourth annual Scouting for Uniforms campaign. The campaign, which runs during the month of July, seeks to collect donated uniforms from the public for distribution to scouts in need. Throughout the month of July all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations will have bins to accept donations of used scouting uniforms. Pilgrim Cleaners will remove patches if necessary, clean the uniforms and pass them on to the Northern Star Council for distribution. Scouting uniforms of all sizes and from all eras are needed, but this year the special focus is on Cub Scout uniforms. Kent York of the Northern Star Council says this year’s drive is focusing on Cub Scout uniforms because Cub Scouts is the entry point into the scouting program, and the Northern
Star Council doesn’t want potential scouts not to join because they can’t afford a uniform. In addition, boys in the Cub Scout age group (first- through third-grade) tend to grow quickly and often need a different size uniform each year. That may be the reason why Cub Scout uniforms have run out most quickly during past distributions. Uniform donations are especially important during these tough economic times. York said that in 2009 an independent research group determined that about 5,000 youth in Boy Scouts in the Twin Cities received free and reduced lunch at school. That indicated a high level of need. Bonnie Engler is the President of Pilgrim Cleaners. “There is a need,” she said. “When we started exploring this, we realized there were a lot of kids who would like to join the Boy Scouts and weren’t.” Engler started the uniform drive four years ago after hearing about a similar program happening in another part of the country. The Scouting for Uniforms campaign has met with success. “It’s grown every year,” she said. The first year the drive collected 350 uniforms. The second year it collected 560 and last year it collected 564. This year
the goal is to collect 750 uniforms. “I think that’s a reachable goal,” Engler said. “We’re very fortunate here. We have a community that’s very willing and able to donate.” Engler said last year one Pilgrim Cleaners location had a man bring in a whole box of uniforms he had been saving. “I’m always overwhelmed to see how wonderfully and eagerly the community responds to these drives,” she said. Engler said people who don’t have used uniforms but still want to help can donate funds to the Northern Star Council to buy new uniforms. During July, uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave. 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. Info: ScoutingGoodForLife .org or 763-231-7201 (Northern Star Council).

Kidnap FROM PAGE 5 liquor and cigarettes, returned to the apartment building and went to the woman’s apartment to drink and play cards. The defendant then asked the Eden Prairie man to drive him to Brooklyn Park, which he did, according to the complaint. Upon returning to Bloomington the men stopped at a Walgreens. The Eden Prairie man went into the store alone. During that time a Bloomington police officer pulled into the parking lot. Upon returning to the car, the Eden Prairie man, who had been drinking, asked the defendant to drive, the complaint noted.
The defendant drove the vehicle, but headed to Minneapolis rather than his Bloomington apartment. The Eden Prairie man told the defendant to stop the vehicle and get out at a gas station, which he did, the complaint said. An investigator determined through surveillance video from the apartment building and the Walgreens that the Eden Prairie man’s story was true, according to the complaint. Further investigation determined that the woman was told by the defendant to lie about the three of them being together. An order for protection had never been served upon the Eden Prairie man, the complaint noted. If convicted the man faces up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $3,000.

Mission accomplished Paula Budde, left, receives a diploma from Trish Gonzales, an instructor in the health information technology program at Normandale Community College. About 150 students completed Normandale’s first six-month program and received diplomas during a June 30 ceremony. The program prepares students – many of whom have years of experience in health care or information technology – to work within health care and related industries to support or lead the implementation of IT systems. The college received an $800,000 grant last year to implement the program. (Photo by Mike Hanks • Sun Newspapers)

Mormon FROM PAGE 13 the church. Schneiber begins his service to the church in what analysts would call a bull market. Mormon leaders recently launched a multi-million-dollar marketing campaign aimed at eliminating misconceptions about the religion. Two candidates for the Republican nod to run for President in 2012 are Mormons – Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman Jr. Schneiber says the church officially is neutral in matters of politics and points out that not all Mormons are Republicans. Most notably, Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, a democrat and well-known liberal, is also a Mormon. The raised visibility, however, means added interest, and representatives of the church can spend less time on the defensive and more time proselytizing. “We want to be understood,” Schneiber said. “We’re pretty normal – regular people with regular desires, hopes and dreams.” The church is growing in the Twin Cities, as well as internationally.
As more people move to the area, Mormons are among them, Schneiber notes, most particularly Hispanics. The church recently formed a Spanishspeaking congregation. A young singles congregation for individuals 18-30 has also been established. Schneiber said the raised visibility has also worked to bring back people who have wandered away from their faith. Schneiber replaced Lewis Bautista of Orono, president of Eddington Restaurants, who has moved to Guatemala to supervise and train more than 160 Mormon missionaries in that country over the next three years. Schneiber spends 15-25 hours a week on his stake president duties, most of them concentrated on Sundays. “It’s not unusual to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and beyond on Sunday,” Scheniber said. The workload is made manageable by good helpers, he notes. “We have a good structure in place,” Schneiber said. Although the exact length of his calling is open-ended, he could be asked to serve for up to 10 years. Schneiber was named one of Treasury & Risk magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People June 28, honoring him for “creative responses” to economic challenges of the past few years.

A security officer was able to pull one away from the man, but he drove off with the other. He was stopped by police and arrested a short time later, Stehlik said. cover its operating costs during the coming year and maintain a fund balance of about $5 million, Zivkovich explained. Deficit spending, to the tune of $3.8 million, has been part of the district’s plan in anticipation of decreasing state revenue and a reduction in federal stimulus dollars, he said. In anticipation of the decreased revenue, the district has set aside referendum dollars collected during the past two years, including $1.7 million from the 2010-11 budget year. The 3 percent increase in expenditures for the coming year equals about

Office burglaries Five offices in east Bloomington were broken into, with at least two computer towers valued at $800 being stolen from one office. The burglaries of office suites at 3001 Metro Drive were reported 4:11 a.m. June 24. It appeared a fire extinguisher was used to break glass windows near the door handles in order to gain access to the offices, Stehlik said.
Facebook investigation Bloomington Police are investigating a report of a fraudulent Facebook profile depicting a Bloomington Jefferson High School teacher. Police recently executed a search warrant at a Bloomington residence as part of an ongoing identity theft investigation, Stehlik said.
$3 million, pushing the district’s total expenditures to about $103 million, Zivkovich said. That increase would have been about $4 million, but the district will decrease spending by $1 million in the coming year, much of that coming through the change from a four-period to a six-period day at the high schools. The change will decrease the number of full-time equivalent teachers needed in each building, saving the district about $700,000, he explained. The move to a six-period day saves money based on the number of periods schools have to staff during the day, according to district spokesman Rick Kaufman. The change also results in fewer elective courses being taught, further reducing the need for the current number of teachers. The district will also reduce spending in the coming year by approximately $200,000 through administrative budget cuts, such as reductions in supply and overtime expenditures, Zivkovich said. “Every reduction that we make has some effect,” according to Zivkovich, but the district has positioned itself to weather the tough economic times that have resulted in a state freeze in education funding. “We’re in a lot better shape than other districts,” he said. Walter said credit for the school district’s financial position is shared. “Our conservative fiscal approach is the product of an administration that has worked diligently the past five years to build efficiencies into its operations, labor groups that have worked collaboratively to make shared sacrifices and valuable input from the Citizens Financial Advisory Committee,” he said.

Lynch passes on passion for basketball to youth players Former Jefferson standout directs instructional camps for area boys and girls BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Basketball tradition runs deep in the Lynch family. at Jefferson High, starting in 1976. The Jaguars won four state championships under the guidance of Evens and Lynch. Four of Jake Lynch son’s played basketball at Jefferson. Mike was the oldest and graduated in 1980. After high school, Mike Lynch continued his basketball career at Normandale and the University of Great Falls in Montana. Kennedy VB workouts Kennedy summer volleyball workouts are underway at Kennedy Activity Center. These workout sessions are for incoming ninth-graders from Valley View and Oak Grove middle schools who wish to play in the Kennedy High School program this fall. Workout sessions are noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning July 19, sessions will be 8 to 11 a.m. Cost is $20. Captains practices begin Aug. 1. Information: 952-881-4166.
BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Martial arts provided a valuable athletic training ground for Bloomington’s Nate Okonek. As a youngster, Okonek attended the Karate School in Bloomington and achieved a first-degree black belt by age 13. Okonek used that training to develop concentration and coordination. His hand and eye coordination was put to good use in high school baseball. The 5-foot-9, 225-pound Okonek was one of Jefferson’s leading hitters the past two seasons. He batted .378 as a junior and was voted the team’s Rookie of the Year. This spring, the senior left fielder batted .325 with 23 RBI. Okonek was allconference and was an alternate selection for the Lions all-star tourney June 24-25. Okonek has continued his hot hitting this summer, batting .350 for Bloomington Blue’s American Legion baseball squad. He has 14 RBI for Blue (5-3 overall). Okonek will go to Bethel University in the fall. “I love the Bethel campus and am excited about joining their baseball program,” said Okonek. “I plan to major in physical education and minor in athlet-

Gold players regroup after successful prep baseball season Legion team wins Fargo-Moorhead tourney BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS It was a remarkable high school baseball season for Bloomington Kennedy in 2011. The Eagles opened with a 1-8 record before regrouping going 13-6 the rest of the season. Kennedy won the Class 3A, Section 6 title and advanced to state, where it claimed the consolation championship. Now many of those players are competing for the Bloomington Gold
American Legion team. And it took them a few games to come down from their emotional high after their high school success. Gold opened its South Hennepin League schedule with losses to Hopkins, Edina and Eden Prairie. But Gold bounced back from those defeats to win the Fargo-Moorhead tournament June 24-26. Bloomington was 3-1 in pool play before beating Manitoba 12-6 in the championship game. Gold pitcher Evan McConnell won two games in the tourney. Gold displayed power hitting as Montana Schowalter, Austin Nordby and
Arich Juberian connected for home runs. Zach Horn and Bobby Fahlin were two other leading hitters for Gold in the tournament, according to head coach Jerry Olerud. “Our players had a good run in the high school season, but we got off to a slow start in Legion league play,” said Olerud. “But we played much better in the Fargo-Moorhead tournament. We didn’t field the ball as well as we could but had strong hitting.” Gold’s batting lineup features second baseman Nick Warren leading off followed by Horn (catcher), Fahlin (left field) and Juberian (center field) or
Nordby (pitcher/first base) in the cleanup spot. The rest of the lineup consists of Schowalter (shortstop), Chad Allmann (right field), Eric Olsen (first base) and Caleb Carlson (third base). Gold’s pitching staff includes Nordby, McConnell, Fahlin and Josh Flanders. Bloomington Gold will compete in the Gopher Classic July 8-12. Haddox Field will be a pool-play site. Gold meets Eastview at 8:30 a.m. and Sartell at 9 p.m. Friday. Bloomington plays Fridley at 9 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Gold plays Gillette (Wyo.) at 9 a.m. followed by a game against Plymouth (Ind.) at 5 p.m.

Lynch FROM PAGE 22 Tim (’83) and Kevin (’87) were also standout high school players. John and Tim were members of the Jaguars’ ’82 and ’83 state championship teams. Kevin played on two Jefferson state title squads before starring at the University of Minnesota and embarking on a pro career in the NBA and Europe. Mike Lynch, now 49, has stayed involved with basketball through the years, directing his youth camps around the Twin Cities area. He also stays busy with his full-time job as a financial planner. “It is very gratifying to pass on some of my basketball knowledge to the kids,” said Lynch. “We teach not only basketball fundamentals but also try to provide the youngsters with life lessons. “I enjoy the enthusiasm and energy the kids bring to camp. They enjoy being competitive and want to improve.” The Lynch Basketball Camps are designed for boys and girls ages 8-14 who
are interested in learning the game of basketball in a fun and challenging environment. Players are separated by age, size and skill level. “We work on ballhandling, shooting, rebounding, defensive footwork,” said Lynch. “We also have shooting contests and 5-on-5 scrimmages in the mornings and afternoons during the all-day summer camps.” Lynch Basketball Camp sessions are scheduled for Bloomington (week of July 11), Eden Prairie (week of July 25) and Edina (week of Aug. 1). The July camp in Eden Prairie is full, but another camp in Eden Prairie starts Aug. 15. More information on the camps is available at www.lynchcamps.com or by calling 612-347-8649. Lynch’s 15-year-old son Kyle could be playing for the Jaguars in the coming basketball seasons. Mike and his wife Sandy, a 1982 Jefferson graduate, also have a 9-year-old daughter named Isabelle. Sandy Lynch also is involved in youth sports as a tennis camp director. The Lynch family lives in Bloomington.

Bandits almost steal tourney title Bloomington team finishes second at Cambridge BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Bloomington Bandits town baseball team finished second in the Rum River Bandits Bash June 24-26 in Cambridge. The Bandits lost 6-3 to Blue Package Delivery in the championship game. Bloomington defeated Champlin 4-1 and Rum River 10-0 in its first two tournament games. “We ended up losing a tough game in the title game but had a great time in the tournament,” said Bandits coach George Walker. “Alex Mack was our top player in the tournament finishing with six hits. Mack stole home in one game and ended up with seven steals in the tournament.”
Bloomington is 16-2 overall and has a 6-0 Riverview League record. “We are hoping for a strong second half of the season,” said Walker. “We want to qualify for state again, especially since we will be hosting the Class A tournament during the second and third weekends in August.” Aaron Hoese, Sam Baltes and Mack are batting .400 or better. Kyle Bassamore, Scott Davis, Ryan Walker and Dusty Walker are hitting above .300. Pitching leaders are Josh Gist and Cliff Christopherson with five wins each. Nick Cobb and Bassamore have three wins apiece. Gist and Cobb have ERAs under 2.00. “Mark Hanson and Jake Huwe have been making highlight-reel defensive plays all season,” said Walker. “We have had contributions from everybody and been getting great defense and pitching. “We are made up of former Kennedy and Jefferson players and that makes us a true Bloomington town team.”

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
