Walking a mile in her shoes for Cornerstone They walked far less than a mile, but more than 20 men took steps toward ending domestic violence. The men, wearing red high-heeled shoes, practiced walking as onlookers watched April 1 at Mall of America. The crowd was entertained as participants strutted up and down the runway, some rather gingerly, others with relative ease. The rehearsal was in preparation for the second annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” a fundraising and awareness campaign for Cornerstone of Bloomington, which works to prevent domestic violence and support those affected by it. The Walk is 8 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Mall of America. Registration begins 7:30 a.m. at Macy’s Court. Men, women and children are invited to participate. The registration fee is $25. There is no charge for children under 12. Men are encouraged, but not required, to walk in women’s high-heeled shoes, which will be available in all sizes for use at the walk. The walk “demonstrates to the community the critical role men play in ending domestic violence,” said Susan Neis, executive director of Cornerstone. “Cornerstone works with thousands of families and children each year, and depends on community involvement and support to continue raising awareness about an issue that many families face.” The walk, based upon the principle that to truly know someone you must walk in their shoes, began as a way to educate the community about domestic violence and raise necessary funds for the domestic violence support and prevention program offered by Cornerstone. Advance registration is available at firstgiving.com/cornerstonemn. Info: xr.com/walk.

Mall of America trend specialist Sara Rogers gives Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead pointers on how to walk in red high-heeled shoes. Several men practiced walking the runway last week in preparation for Cornerstone’s annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.” The walk, April 16, is a benefit for Cornerstone, which works to prevent domestic abuse and provides services to victims of abuse. Wearing three-inch heels, more than 20 men practiced walking in them, including Eden Prairie Police Officer Carter Staaf, whose red shoes stood out in comparison to his camouflage and dark dress socks. FROM PREVIOUS PAGE from the bottom side, is something you usually don’t get to experience.” Kalscheuer, who has snorkeled in Jamaica and Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, said she has never been so close to big fish. She was visiting the aquarium with her nephews, 11-year-old Evan Jones and Trevor Jones, 7, who were on spring break from their Lakeville school. The aquarium celebrated its grand reopening March 11, with at least 500 species living in exhibits that replicate their natural habitats, said general manager Craig Atkins. The number of sea creatures on display has doubled to 10,000, living in 30 tanks filled with 1.3 million gallons of water. Many of the animals are endangered. The aquarium opened in 1996 as Underwater Adventures Aquarium in the mall’s basement. The $5 million project took two years of planning, design work and building, Atkins said. The revamped aquarium is expected to attract 650,000 visitors per year. New features include the touch pool, where kids and adults squeal with horror or delight as they touch starfish or crabs. At the ray lagoon, visitors can watch through bubble-shaped portholes
“We’ve tried to recreate a wild, very naturalistic environment at the aquarium.” – Craig Atkins, general manager of the Minnesota Aquarium at the Mall of America
as stingrays gracefully flap their fins and soar through the water like underwater birds. The aquarium aims to entertain and educate visitors with hands-on activities, Atkins said. Interactive display panels offer information about the animals and a quiz trail runs through the aquarium with fun, interactive questions for children. But the animals are clearly the star attractions. Kids approaching the tropical fish tank yell, “Nemo!” when they see the orange clownfish with black-andwhite stripes. They recognize the clownfish from the animated film “Finding Nemo.” At the jellyfish exhibit, the transpar-
ent creatures hover or pulse their belllike bodies, some trailing long poisonous tentacles. Their tube-shaped tanks glow like lava lamps under colored lights. The Sturgeon Lake exhibit features many animals that live in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers including sturgeon, muskie, largemouth and smallmouth bass and box turtles. Visitors who want to get closer to the animals can sign up at an additional cost for snorkeling or scuba diving sessions. Accompanied by aquarium staff, visitors who jump into the large tanks can get within arm’s distance of the smaller sharks, Atkins said. Animal feeding times are popular and free, with staff feeding the animals at designated times. Sharks are fed every other day on a diet of squid, herring and mackerel. Visitors often ask if sharks eat other creatures in their tanks, Atkins said. While it’s natural behavior for predators, it usually happens only 3-4 times a year at the aquarium. “It typically doesn’t happen during visitor hours, but when it does, it’s part of life, it’s part of life in the wild,” he said. “We’ve tried to recreate a wild, very naturalistic environment at the aquarium.” Attacks are kept to a minimum by
feeding the sharks on a regular schedule. Several shark species share their 500,000-gallon tank with sea turtles, jack fish and sawfish, which have long snouts shaped like saws. The aquarium recently adopted two green sea turtles that were injured by boat propellers. Nursed back to health at an animal hospital in Florida, the turtles couldn’t be returned to the wild. Air bubbles had developed inside their body cavities, preventing them from diving underwater. Weights were glued onto their shells so the turtles can dive under the surface to feed or escape from predators. Aquarium programs are designed to raise public awareness of animals living in freshwater and seawater habitats, Atkins said. By understanding that their actions affect the natural world, visitors may decide to change their habits by recycling, properly disposing of trash instead of tossing it into rivers and lakes, or donating to wildlife causes. “It’s true, people protect what they love,” he said. “If we can get people to be fascinated or feel strongly about some of these animals, maybe we’ll actually empower them to do something different after they leave the aquarium.” Info: visitsealife.com/Minnesota.

New chapter begins for longtime Bloomington restaurant Wally’s Roast Beef has new home to the north BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Little has changed through the years at Wally’s Roast Beef, one of Bloomington’s homegrown restaurants, but don’t go to 90th Street and Penn Avenue expecting a blue plate special. After nearly four decades, the lunchtime-only restaurant has set up shop in the Southtown Office Park building at 8120 Penn Ave., a short jaunt north of the old location. Relocating became a necessity, according to owner Jeff Sagal, and the destination turned out to be better than he imagined, despite having to leave the old neighborhood. “In the long run, I really believe this is a better location,â€? Sagal said.
End of an era A larger dining area awaits customers at Wally’s Roast Beef. The longtime Bloomington restaurant recently moved to the Southtown Office Park building at 8120 Penn Ave. S. (Submitted photo)

or two about roast beef, according to Sagal. “He started out as a beef salesman. Erickson wanted to own his own business, however, and beef was the logical way to go. The storefront at 90th and Penn provided Erickson with a high-traffic location close to his home, Sagal said. With numerous employers nearby along Penn Avenue, there was an ample supply of customers. Erickson’s unique, distinctive sandwiches and meals ensured the demand, Sagal explained. Sagal bought the restaurant in 2004. Erickson was ready to retire, and Sagal, like his predecessor, “always wanted to own my own business. Taking over an established restaurant was “a great business opportunity, he said. With ownership, however, would soon come the challenge of relocation. The hardware store next door to Wally’s is planning to expand, ending the restaurant’s longtime lease on

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE 90th Street. Sagal considered options available at the intersection, but found the best opportunity to be up the road. The Southtown Office Park building completed renovations last summer, which included space for a restaurant at the building’s entrance, Sagal explained. The new location offered more dining space, better parking access and an outdoor patio for his customers, he noted. The move to the Southtown Office Park, however, was “a second full-
time job, Sagal said. After more than a month in the new location, a few finishing touches are all that remain to make the transition complete. The location has changed, but the menu remains the same, and the restaurant continues to serve lunch six days a week with the addition of coffee and pastries from Denny’s 5th Avenue Bakery, which are available weekday mornings 7-10 a.m. Additional information is available on the restaurant’s redesigned website, wallysroastbeef.com.

Hi, I’m Dan and I’d like to hear from you A little over a month ago, I made a decision some of you might fault me for: I moved from a land of sunshine, palm trees and near perpetual summer to return to Minnesota. In March. Winter. I know, I know, what was I thinking? But, after nearly three years of kicking ‘round the Arizona desert, I decided it was time for a homecoming. I came back for a number of reasons, not the least of which was to take the opportunity to work with the Sun Current staff to provide your communities with the information you want, need and have come to
DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Central Managing Editor expect from our publications. Or maybe it was those 120degree days in the summer that make your skin feel like it’s melting. Either one, I guess. Minnesota is where I’m from, through and through, a fact I have been reminded of on numerous occasions since I left. From colleagues making mention of my decidedly moderate bent in opinion writing
LETTERS TO THE E DITOR There is still plenty of kindness out there To the editor: A word of thanks to many people who made a wedding very special for our granddaughter. We were told on March 3 that our granddaughter’s fiancé had stage four cancer. They decided on the morning of March 5 to get married the next day, March 6, which was sooner than they had planned. The angels at Wixon’s Jewelers and Nordstrom bridal department helped put all of this together. The wedding was beautiful. Our sincere thanks and gratitude for all of their help. We just wanted people to know that there are a lot of wonderful people in this world. Our grandson-inlaw is going through extensive chemo. Many people are praying for a miracle and again, thanks for all the support, many people have given our granddaughter and grandson-in-law and our entire family. Marlin and Wilma Grant, Bloomington
to sources, customers and friends taking pains to point out the extended vowels that make a Minnesoooota accent so obvious, reminders of where I came from were a daily occurrence. None of us exist in a vacuum, no one is exempt from the influences of the people and places that we’ve grown up with. As much as I am a reflection of the Midwest culture I grew up in — something people in Arizona would not let me forget — this newspaper reflects your community and if there’s important something we’re missing, we want to know as soon as possible.
So, I want to hear from you. An editor I once worked for was fond of reminding the grunts in the newsroom the only way we’d know how a story was received was how many people called the paper. When you love a story, let us know. When something really gets you riled up, write us a letter. If you couldn’t care less either way, I still want to know about it. So give me a call, leave a comment on our website, shoot me an e-mail or, heck, if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by the office to chat. I’d love to hear from you.
A wish for friendship, realized too late The bushy eyebrows went up in surprise when I handed him the framed picture one day after church this past fall. “Yup, that’s what ours looked like,” Jim McGinty said, looking over the plasticencased picture of the B-26 Marauder bomber he’d flown in as a U.S. Army Air Corps flight engineer during World War II. “Only in ours, the gun turret was up front.” I smiled. “Look closer.” Jim’s eye’s focused on the yellow lettering on the plane’s front fuselage spelling out “Mister Period Twice.” It was probably the first time he’d seen it since the war ended. “Why…that’s my plane!” he said, sounding more childlike than I thought possible. “That’s my plane!” “I know,” I said. “I found the picture on the Internet
JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM Sun-Current South Managing Editor and wanted to give it to you.” His eyes misted over as he thrust out his meaty hand to vigorously shake mine. His smile was huge. “Boy, will my son get a kick out of this!” he exclaimed. Jim’s appreciation of the photo was genuine. After his funeral last week, my mother-in-law spoke with his son, who told her that the picture was hanging upstairs with other family photos. I was glad to have been of service. The Internet can be a great and wonderful thing sometimes. My connection with Jim started over a cup of weak
post-church coffee after I’d mistaken him for someone else who was a radar operator on a destroyer during the war. In case you haven’t guessed yet, I like talking to people who served in World War II. Their stories and roles in the conflict are interesting, and often provide context that books lack. I’ve met Charles Lindberg, the only surviving (before his death in 2007) Iwo Jima flag raiser; Robert Cole, Jimmy Doolittle’s co-pilot from his famous raid; and a regal gentleman, whose name I’ve forgotten, who sailed on the German battleship Bismarck as a teenager, and was one of 189 out of a crew of 2,200 to survive. And I met Jim McGinty, who as a younger man had PALMERSHEIM: TO PAGE 9

Our summer youth and family programming provides free and low cost "learning with fun" formats for the young and young at heart that include adventures in; preschool praise, drama, environmental, and show choir camps as well as book clubs, service projects, camping ministry, mission trips, family movie nights, picnics and just-forfun nights. Our programs offer a safe and nurturing place for children, celebrate family time and bring mentorship opportunities to our area youth in middle and high school -
who lead many of the programs. In between all those youth and family activities are adult and senior options for all ages in music, book and Bible discussion groups, men and women ministry groups, quilting, dining, worship/picnic in the park and monthly fellowship options. Our mission work includes partnerships with M'Bigili parish in Tanzania and monthly packing trips for all ages and abilities to Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen, as well as local support in partnership with VEAP food shelf donations and Community Emergency Services in our community. All this happens between the Sunday mornings - where we are pleased to now offer TWO Sunday morning worship options. Palmersheim FROM PAGE 6 flown with the 452nd Bombardment Squadron of the 322nd Bombardment Group based in Great Sailing, England. The B-26 was known as “the Widow Maker” because of a high accident rate, but Jim didn’t have anything bad to say about it and talked about flying pathfinder missions over Normandy. The sharing was open and easy. He seemed to enjoy it. I haven’t been to church since Jim died, but part of me doesn’t want to look and see the empty space where he always sat, handing out hard candy to little kids on their way to communion with their folks. I’ll miss our brief exchanges over a handshake or coffee, where he’d fawn over my daughters and tell me how big they were getting. I know I won’t be the only one who notices his absence. Some historians think Tom Brokaw was exaggerating when he called his 1998 book “The Greatest Generation.”
British historian Sir Max Hastings is one, referring to them instead as “the generation to whom the greatest things happened.” I don’t agree, but I do agree with what Hastings said in a 2004 interview with the Pittsburgh TribuneReview: “I personally believe each generation has to face different challenges, but when you see what our parents and grandparents who lived through the Second World War went through, it helps us to understand, for all our problems today, we’re a fantastically privileged and pampered generation.” The world we live in was vastly shaped by Jim and others of his generation, not just on the war front, but also on the home front, as the rows and rows of post-war houses in the firstring suburbs will attest. Unfortunately, time is catching up with those lucky enough to survive the hellishness of that war so long ago, and I am pretty sure that there will be very few of them left when my daughter is old enough to understand their value and contribution. Goodbye, Jim, until we meet again over cups of weak church coffee.

My oldest daughter has said, “Before bed each night, my parents did not read ‘Good Night Moon’ to me. Instead, growing up, I would fall asleep to the story of a girl who would ride around on a giant turtle named Mimi and do good deeds.” Telling stories is a treasure shared. I feel so blessed to have the chance to tell stories each night to my children. strong connections with their heritage, a language and culture gap is widening between the elders and the younger generations. The rich folktale collection at the library can foster bonding and improve communication between generations, and be a vehicle to bridge the gap between various countries. National Library Week is being celebrated April 10-16. This year’s theme is “Create Your Own Story.” Minnesota and the library have been an important part of my “story.” I hope you discover how the library can help you create your own story, too.
Tran is a librarian at Hennepin County Library – Augsburg Park in Richfield. She left Vietnam in 1975 after the government closed the law school with the fall of Saigon. She spent 10 months in a refugee camp in Malaysia before coming to America, arriving in Minnesota in 1984. She earned a bachelor’. in French literature at the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in library science at the Dominican University College of St. Catherine. French cooking inspires school kids in New Hope Hotel Sofitel chef helps children learn about healthy food BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS A touch of France came to New Hope at 10 a.m. March 30. It landed in a classroom at Sonnesyn Elementary School, 34th and Boone avenues, creating a tantalizing aroma and succulent flavors. The French connection came with Serge Devesa, executive chef at Hotel Sofitel in Bloomington, whose mission is to inspire young students to make healthy food choices. He achieved his goal by creating a meal from scratch in front of 30 children in grades K-6 who are in the Adventure Club before- and after-school daycare program and were at the school during spring break. The menu included chicken breasts sautéed in olive oil and herbs, and ratatouille, a vegetable stew containing eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, peppers, flavored with garlic and basil. Devesa put ingredients for the ratatouille into large fry pans with olive oil and herbs at first, and then transferred the mixture to a huge cooking kettle to steam. Served hot, the ratatouille can be sautéed on top of the stove, or it can be put into the oven, like stew, Devesa said. “You can eat this hot, or cold as a salad,” he said. “Some people like to spread it on bread. It’s fantastic, refreshing.” Devesa, 48, said he grew up in Axen Provence in southern France, close to Marseille, where chefs cook with olive oil. In northern France, he said, they cook with butter and cream. He has been cooking since he was 17. Prior to moving to Chanhassen six years ago, Devesa worked as a chef in Miami, New York, Vietnam, Yemen, Canada and the Caribbean. He also taught at a culinary school in Vancouver, British Columbia. The chef answered questions from

the children as he cooked and posed a few of his own. He asked what the children’s favorite foods were and received both a few unexpected answers: shrimp, cheesy potatoes, plain spaghetti with butter and cheese, Panini, macaroni and cheese, pizza and sushi … yes sushi. He also asked the children to guess what temperature the chicken had to reach in order to be considered done. Answer: 165 degrees. And he told them that he always wears disposable gloves when he cooks, a new pair of gloves for each new task. Soon it was time for the children to taste the chicken and ratatouille, along with some French bread. Some cleaned their plates and went back for seconds; others were reluctant to taste the mélange of vegetables. “I love it all!” said Calisto Williams, 9, of Robbinsdale. “I wish I could pack it all up and take it home. I’d like to get the recipe and make it for my mom’s birthday.” The children’s enthusiasm for Devesa’s food creations was only enhanced when he showed them a huge box of French pastries from the Sofitel bakery he brought for a snack later. It was clear that his appearance made an impression. Several children brought napkins to him and enthusiastically requested his autograph. Devesa’s appearance was part of Sofitel’s “Serge in Schools” program, in which the executive chef visits local schools each year to talk about preparing nutritious food.

House bill would upend Perpich Center for Arts Education The Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, a tuitionfree statewide public residential arts high school for juniors and seniors, could be dissolved or forced to become a charter school under HF1078, a bill introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Rep. Pat Garofalo of Farmington, R36B, chair of the House Education Finance Committee, is sponsoring the bill. There is no companion bill in the Senate. The school, a state agency at 6125 Olson Highway in Golden Valley, was established in 1987 by the Legislature and named for the late Rudy Perpich, former governor of Minnesota. The agency functions, as well as the 20-yearold arts high school, occupy a 33-acre campus that formerly housed Golden Valley Lutheran College. The Arts High School offers coursework in six art areas: dance, literary arts, media arts (photography and cinema), music, theater, and visual arts. It is open to all 11th- and 12th-graders who live in Minnesota and apply by
audition, and now enrolls 300 students from all over the state. About half live in on-campus dorms at the school; the rest are commuters. But it’s more than a high school. The Golden Valley campus houses the center’s Professional Development and Research Group, and a library that includes materials for K-12 educators. Students, teachers, artists, schools and arts organizations throughout Minnesota are served through grants, research and professional development programs. The PCAE also works partnership with the Department of Education to help design and implement K-12 arts standards. The proposal to change the center’s status is not a new one. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty first proposed changing the Perpich to a charter school during the 2009 legislative session. “A number of people then went over and talked with the governor and his staff about the value of the Perpich Center, and it wound up being supported,” said Kevyn Burger, communications director for the Perpich Center for Arts Education.
This time, Burger said, “It will be a long process, fairly intensive. There will be a lot more discussion before a lot is resolved.” Susan Mackert, executive director of Perpich, said, “In this year of difficult financial issues for the state of Minnesota, all public dollars are being closely scrutinized. That includes funding for the Perpich Center for Arts Education.” However, she added, “The Perpich Center has always enjoyed strong, bipartisan support. I have no doubt that this will continue. In this time of tight budgets and cutbacks, the resources and support of the Perpich Center is critical.” The Perpich Center has a $7 million annual budget. The first-year cost saving to the state would be about $4.7 million in severance costs for agency employees, according to Session Weekly. If it became a charter school, the annual cost in the second and subsequent years would be about $2.5 million in lease aid and start-up aid. Burger said administrators at the Perpich Center are in close contact with legislators about the issue.
“There is not an extra amount of fear or anxiety here,” Burger said. “It’s a delicate process, and we’re letting it unfold. We’re trying to be shrewd in how we approach it.” She noted that the House bill doesn’t address the center’s outreach activities, but only the high school. Separate from the center’s operating funds, Burger said, the Legislature invited the school to apply for legacy funds that are being used, for example, for arts integration projects in northwestern Minnesota. “Our facility is used for far more than just high school activities,” Burger said. For example, a media arts workshop at the school drew 30 teachers from all over the state during spring break, she said. “We connected with 13,000 Minnesota educators last year through conferences,” Burger said. The center’s grants enable artists to visit state high schools as well, she said. Burger noted that 50 legislators are new to the body this year. “Part of their process is learning about what we do,” she said.

A 20-year-old Bloomington man faces one felony count of criminal sexual conduct involving the 7-year-old daughter of his girlfriend. The man, charged March 30 in Hennepin County District Court, faces up to 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine if convicted. Bloomington police officers were called to the home of the 7-year-old girl and her mother March 28. The mother told police her daughter had been sexually assaulted by the suspect, who stays with the woman’s two children while she works, according to the complaint. On March 28, the woman came home early and found the 7-year-old in the master bathroom with the suspect. The girl left the bathroom and went to another bathroom, where she rinsed her mouth out with mouthwash. When the woman asked her daughter what happened, the girl indicated the suspect had made her put his penis in her mouth. The woman confronted her boyfriend, who confirmed the story, the complaint stated. Upon further investigation the girl said that the suspect had sexually assaulted her on previous occasions.
Surveillance video from the store provided police with a description of the suspect. Two other mall stores reported attempts to pass a counterfeit $100 traveler’s check, including one store that gave $49.06 in change for a purchase, according to the complaint. An employee of one of the stores noticed the suspect entering a nearby store later that afternoon and called police. Police responded, questioned the woman and arrested her. After her arrest, police found several forms of identification with different names and from different states, as well as 20 $100 traveler’s checks. The suspect had been accompanied by another woman who the suspect identified as her cousin. She said her cousin had no knowledge that the traveler’s checks were counterfeit, according to the complaint.

Shopping spree A 25-year-old Vellejo, Calif., woman was charged in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of forgery following a Mall of America shopping spree. The woman was arrested March 27
after Bloomington Police received a report of a woman attempting to make a purchase with a counterfeit $100 traveler’s check. The manager of the mall’s Forever 21 store suspected the traveler’s check was a forgery and initiated a call
to confirm the validity of the check, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The suspect took the check back and said she would return with cash to make her purchase, departing before police arrived.
COLONIAL
Residential robbery Bloomington Police responded to a report of a robbery at a basement apartment on the 8600 block of Fifth Ave. S. A 55-year-old man said that he had cash sitting on a bedroom dresser. A 19year-old man at the apartment said he had received a call from an acquaintance, who asked to stop by the apartment. Inside the apartment the suspect grabbed scissors and the cash, and scuffled with the 19-year-old, Stehlik said. Others at the apartment attempted to prevent the suspect from leaving, tearing his shirt off as he fled the dwelling, Stehlik noted.

Volunteer honored during council meeting Dr. Cliff Phibbs received the 2011 Health Promotion Award for five decades of volunteer service. Phibbs was honored during the April 4 Bloomington City Council meeting for his service to numerous community
organizations and interests that contribute to the health and wellness of Bloomington residents. Phibbs practiced as a physician and surgeon at the Oxboro Clinic for 48 years. He began volunteering when he became a resident of Bloomington in 1962 and continued to do so after his retirement for organizations such as the Bloomington Advisory Board of Health, Bloomington Board of Education, Bloomington Sister City Organization board of directors and Bloomington Community Foundation. He also started a medical mentoring program in 2002 at Valley View Middle School to encourage students, particularly minority students, to become doctors. He continues to give his time to mentoring students. Carol Oldowski, who nominated Phibbs for the award, calls him a modest man. “When I found out about his accomplishments and the recognition he received from others, I felt it was time that his community recognized him. In his unassuming way through his eyes as a physician, Cliff has left a strong impact here.”

Holy Yoga provides a new way to worship Christ-based yoga classes crop up at Twin Cities churches BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A handful of Twin Cities churches are combining worship with a workout. Holy Yoga classes are offered weekly at 11 metro locations, including Edina, Excelsior, Robbinsdale and Waconia. Holy Yoga uses the same poses as traditional yoga, but incorporates Bible verses, prayer and Christian music, said Jonnie Goodmanson, lead instructor trainer for the practice. “In traditional yoga it’s about looking into yourself and transcending knowledge, and that’s where we differ,” said Goodmanson. Each class begins with scripture. Music played during the session often mirrors its message, like grace or forgiveness. Terms like chakra – the name given to seven areas of energy in the body recognized in traditional yoga – are explained as man’s attempt to articulate God’s creation. “Our emphasis is on spirituality,” said Goodmanson, who leads classes at St. Stephen’s Church in Edina, Elim Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale and Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia. “It’s great yoga, don’t get me wrong, but we focus on building intimacy with Christ.” She was introduced to Holy Yoga when she began attending a church in Phoenix, with a sports ministry that
‘Jesus at the Core’ Holy Yoga founder Brooke Boon will lead a “Jesus at the Core” workshop 5-9:30 p.m. Friday, April 15, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6109 Normandale Road, in Edina. The two-day event features Holy Yoga classes, live contemporary worship music performed by Christian recording artists Mela Kamin and Nolan Soltvedt, as well as healthy organic fare catered by Peoples Organic Coffee. A tax-deductible donation of $75 for both days or $50 for one day is suggested. offered Christ-based yoga every day of the week. “My life just began to transform,” said Goodmanson, who at the time was studying to be an injury massage therapist. “My day-to-day stress just began to melt away. My faith increased exponentially.” She was introduced through a friend to Phoenix-based Holy Yoga founder Brooke Boon, and soon after was an employee. Boon will be in town to lead a two-day Holy Yoga workshop in Edina April 15 and 16. Holy Yoga has grown quickly since its beginning in 2005, said Jo Ann Bauer, communications director. FROM PREVIOUS PAGE KSTP reporter moved south last year to join its staff. “We have 325 certified instructors now in 38 states on three continents,” said Bauer. “Arizona and Minnesota are the hubs that have grown the fastest.” Half of Holy Yoga’s six-member core staff live in the state, including Wayzata resident Goodmanson, who moved to Minnesota in 2009. Holy Yoga trains instructors to lead Christ-centered yoga. Instructors then start their own practices. Most teach out of a church and their classes are donation-based. “It’s the trifecta – an intense physical, emotional and spiritual experience,” said Bethany Connelly, an instructor at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina and Spirit of the Lake Yoga in Excelsior. “It leaves you feeling rejuvenated connected and inspired.” At her noon Thursday class, March 31, in Edina, participant Jenni Moser, a Robbinsdale resident and employee at Edina-based Regis Corporation, said it offers a welcome break during a busy day.

(Photo by Katie Mintz • Sun Newspapers) “The stress just disappears,” she said. But not all Christians are onboard with the practice. Goodmanson said there is a degree of controversy that follows Holy Yoga. “There are a lot of misnomers that yoga is a related to or belongs to another religion,” she said. Some believe yoga is connected with Hinduism because yoga has been incorporated as part of that religion. But Goodmanson said yoga actually predates religion. She said those who practice yoga do not have to worry that they are worshipping another god. Chris Enstad, senior pastor at Elim, said it’s quite the opposite. “We’re not doing this to worship ourselves and we’re not going to lead anybody off the path,” he said. “For me, I feel it’s like the one time someone preaches to me. It really fills my cup back up again.”
Enstad began doing yoga at a secular gym to relieve stress after being laid off from another congregation close to a year ago. When he joined Elim this fall, he no longer had time to attend, but realized he could bring yoga to him. In the month that Elim has offered Holy Yoga, he’s seen several new faces. “There’s so many other ways to experience God, think about God and deepen our relationship with him. Our bodies have been the most neglected part of that equation throughout history,” he said. Enstad points to a piece of scripture, Mark 12:30, in which Jesus calls for people “to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” For more information on Holy Yoga, visit twincities.holyyoga.net.

The City of Edina is advising residents to keep an eye on their small pets after a recent coyote attack – likely the first in the city. Resident Linda Davis said she let Ruby, the family’s miniature dachshund, into their fenced backyard near Pamela Park just before 10 a.m. Thursday, March 31. She went into the bathroom to brush her teeth and when she turned the water off just minutes later, she heard Ruby yelping. “It happened so fast,” said Davis. “She wasn’t out there for three minutes. People just have to be really careful.” Davis said as soon as she ran into the yard, the coyote let go of Ruby and jumped over the back fence “like it was nothing.” The dog suffered six puncture wounds.
She was placed on antibiotics and pain medication, but will be OK, said Davis. “We’re lucky,” she said. According to media reports, another small dog died after a Feb. 17 attack in a St. Louis Park backyard. Edina Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter said residents should not leave small pets outside or unsupervised for long periods of time. Hunter said coyotes are naturally present year-round in the city and are most active at dawn and dusk. While the city doesn’t track coyote sightings, he estimated there to be about a dozen active in the Edina. Coyote sightings have also been reported in several other suburban areas. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, populations are establishing and increasing in the Twin Cities metro area. Recently there have been regular sightings in the Pamela Park and Melody Lake areas on Edina. Last fall, the city alerted residents about a family of coyCOYOTE ATTACK: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE otes living near Merilane in north Edina. In his seven years with the city, however, Hunter said this was the first report he heard of a coyote attacking a pet. “It’s not a common event by any stretch, but if you’ve got small pets, don’t put them out unsupervised,” said Hunter. Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, he said, and the one that attacked Ruby saw “something small and short legged – a bite-sized morsel – that probably looked like a good idea at the time.” Coyotes avoid people. There have been no reported attacks on people in the state. He said the easiest way for people to protect their small pets is to supervise them when outside. Coyotes are easily capable of jumping 5-foot fences, he said. Davis said this winter, a neighbor also reported seeing a coyote, but she didn’t know of any other sightings in her heavily trafficked area just off France Avenue. It hadn’t been a concern before, but following the attack, she will no longer let Ruby out alone. “Because we had a fenced yard she’s been able to play around and chase the chipmunks and squirrels pretty freely but she won’t be able to now,” said Davis. “You have to be really careful.”
Coyote dos & don’ts The Minnesota Department offers the following tips for residents concerned about the presence of coyotes in their neighborhood. Do: • Secure all garbage containers, wildlife feeders and other food sources to prevent coyote access. • Confine small dogs and cats in kennels, or supervise them when outside. • Vaccinate all pets for rabies, distemper, parvo and other diseases, as recommended by a veterinarian. • Consider installing coyote-proof fencing. • Chase or shout at any coyotes that does not immediately run from people. Don’t: • Feed coyotes. • Leave pet food outside. • Allow cats and small dogs outside unattended. Info: dnr.state.mn.us.
Edina Animal Control is monitoring the situation. Coyote sightings can be reported to Edina Animal Control at 952826-0494. If an immediate response is required, call 911.

Chamber FROM PAGE 1 “There’s plenty going on at the state that impacts all of us,” said Pat MulQueeny, Eden Prairie Chamber president, following the luncheon at the Edina Country Club. “Overall it’s been an aggressive approach trying to get things done early.” Koch said the current focus at the capital is balancing the state budget. This year, the Senate set its earliest budget target in history asking for budget bills to be through committee by March 25.
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Those bills, and their House companions, are now getting votes on the respective floors, something Koch said doesn’t usually until late April or May. That allows extra time for discussion as details are hammered out in conference committees before the bills are sent to Democratic-Farmer-Labor Gov. Mark Dayton’s desk, she said. The GOP-proposed budget does not increase taxes. Koch said the budget should fit within the state’s projected revenue of about $34 billion – the same amount spent last biennium. Dayton’s proposed budget increases spending to about $37.4 billion. “We believe it’s important for the gov-

ernment to live within its means,” said Koch, adding the projected $5 billion budget deficit is due to an assumed increase in spending. She said one of the fastest growing areas of spending – and most likely for reform – is health and human services. The budget bill approved by the Senate Wednesday afternoon would ban state spending to enact the federal health care overhaul unless the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the law. Koch told chamber members that if any state can handle its own health care it’s Minnesota, home to Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and other renowned institutions. “Let us keep our money. Let us spend it as we see fit,” said Koch. Koch also spoke on her three overarching priorities for the session: creating a business-friendly climate to boost job creation, making the government live within its means, and making it more efficient and cost effective. “The best remedy for a bad state budget is a thriving economy,” she said. She gave an overview of related measures already taken this session, among them bills signed by the governor allowing alternative licensing for teachers and streamlining the environmental permitting process. “They are trying to be very pro-business, which we haven’t heard in a long time,” said Arrie Larsen Manti, Edina Chamber president. According to Tony Kwilas, director of environmental policy at the Minnesota Chamber, the chamber had been work-
ing for three years to see efficiencies brought to the permitting process. “When you do a comparison, sometimes unfortunately we take a little bit longer than other states,” Kwilas said. “This year through the leadership of the Legislature as well as the governor we put some pretty substantial changes in place to help move the process along.” In addition, Koch said streamlined House and Senate committees are also making the legislation process better for business. GOP leadership reduced the number of House committees from 36 to 24, and Senate committees from 25 to 16, at the beginning of the session. “Business people do not have the time to go over to the capital and sit in committee hearings through the course of the week,” said Maureen Scallen Failor, Bloomington Chamber executive director. “The process has definitely been improved. They’ve made it more efficient and more effective.” As the state’s first female majority leader, and the first Republican to the hold the post in 38 years, Koch also spoke about the historic wave of Republican support last election. She said of the 60 freshman legislators in the House and Senate, 54 are Republicans. Richfield Chamber President Steven Lindgren said the high number of freshman in the majority means fresh ears willing to listen to suggestions and concerns from the private sector. “There’s a new and exciting focus on how free enterprise can flourish in this state that hasn’t been quite as evident in years past,” Lindgren said.

TERRY?
DEADLINE FOR
You were tall and handsome with dark hair and dark eyes. We first met at a Department Store in Downtown Mpls. in the mid to late 1970’s. Your parents and some siblings lived in the Crystal, MN area. You entered the Navy and were stationed in California (San Diego or San Francisco?) For years you would call, or pop in and out of my life. At one point I visited you in California to attend a banquet at which you received an award. We stayed with your friends Walt and Susan. The last I heard, you were still in California. I wasn’t always the kindest and would like to apologize for that. If you know Terry or how to contact him, please email Susan at: suziq4967@yahoo.com

NOTICE: State and federal law provide protections to defendants who are on active duty in the military service, and to their dependents. Dependents of a service member are the service member’s spouse, the service member’s minor child, or an individual for whom the service member provided more than onehalf of the individual’s support for one hundred eighty days immediately proceeding an application for relief. One protection provided is the protection against the entry of a default judgement in certain circumstances. This notice only pertains to a defendant who is dependent of a member of the national guard or a military reserve component under a call to active service for a period of more than thirty consecutive days. Other defendants in military service also have protections against default judgements not covered by this notice. If you are the dependent of a member of the national guard or a military reserve component under a call to active service for a period of more than thirty consecutive days, you should notify the plaintiff or the plaintiff’s attorney in writing of your status as such within twenty days of the receipt of this notice. If you fail to do so, then a court or an administrative tribunal may presume that you are not a dependent of an active duty member of the national guard or reserves, and proceed with the entry of an order of default and/or a default judgement without further proof of your status. Your response to the plaintiff or plaintiff’s attorneys about your status does not constitute an appearance for jurisdictional purposes in any pending litigation nor a waiver of your rights. You are further notified that any non-consenting parent or alleged father has a right to be represented by an attorney, and an attorney will be appointed for an indigent parent who requests an attorney. You are further notified that your failure to respond to the termination action within twenty days of service, if served within the state of Washington, or thirty days if served outside of this state, will result in the termination of the parent-child with respect to the child. You are further notified that your failure to file a claim of paternity under Chapter 26.26 RCW or to respond to the petition, within twenty days of the date of service of the petition is grounds to terminate your parent-child relationship with respect to the child. You are further noticed that you are the alleged father of an Indian child, that if you acknowledge paternity of the child, or if your paternity of the child is established prior to the termination of the parent-child relationship, that your parental rights may not be terminated unless you: (i) give valid consent to termination, or (ii) your parent-child relationship is terminated involuntarily pursuant to 26.33 or 13.34 RCW. One method of filing your response and serving a copy on the Petitioner is to send them your written response by certified mail with return receipt requested. WITNESS the Honorable RICHARD F. Foster care volunteers Animal Humane Society is looking for community members who love animals and want to make a difference by becoming foster care volunteers. Animals that are not quite ready for adoption are placed with volunteers who are trained to care for these special situations, the release said. One of the most common needs is for foster volunteers caring for litters of kit-
tens that require weight gain before being eligible for spay or neuter surgery, according to the organization. Others may include animals with special health needs. Requirements include the ability to commit to fostering an animal in your home at least 24 days per year. Animal Humane Society will help more than 30,000 animals this year and depends on the generosity of the community to support the programs and services at its five sites in Buffalo, Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul and Woodbury. To learn more about the foster program or volunteer opportunities, call 763-432-4833, or visit www.animalhumanesociety.org and go to the volunteer section under “help.”

Senior-dominated Jaguars hope to improve Jefferson baseball rests title hopes on 12 seniors BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson will rely on a senior-dominated baseball squad as it attempts to improve on last year’s 10-15 record. The Jaguars hope a week of practicing outdoors in balmy Vero Beach, Fla., will prepare them. Jefferson players spent seven hours per day working on their fundamental skills during the recent spring trip. Then the coaching staff cut loose the players to enjoy the remainder of the day at the beach. “We got a lot of good practices in during our spring trip,” said Jefferson head coach Jim Gess. “We found out quite a bit about our players and found out they had excellent work ethics. “A trip like that is good for building camaraderie.” Four seniors will provide leadership for the Jaguar baseball squad. Ryan Siiro is one of the captains and will be used at three positions – pitcher, right field and third base. He batted about .300 last season and is one of the team’s “most consistent hitters,” Gess said. Nate Okonek is a returning left fielder and was the team’s leading hitter last season with a .378 average. Also back are captains Tyler Krysiak (third base, pitcher) and Tom Hallgren (first base, catcher, pitcher). Krysiak was a .300 hitter as a junior and Hallgren batted .280. Gess has a deep pitching staff led by right-handers Siiro, Krysiak, Hallgren, senior Brian Gartner, senior Matt Navis and junior James Fisher. Left-handed Jaguar pitching candidates are senior Kevin Handt, sophomore Kevin Woebke and sophomore Erik Monson. Jefferson’s infield consists of Hallgren (first base), senior Brady Dornfeld (second), junior Tony Robinson (shortstop) and Krysiak (third). Jefferson’s catching candidates are junior James Harsh and senior Kevin Larson.

(Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer) Jaguar outfielders are Okonek (left) and senior Cody Lundeen (center). Siiro, senior Taylor Kratoville and senior Adam Cole will compete for playing time in right. Fisher will serve as a designated hitter or outfielder for the Jaguars. Jefferson is scheduled to play Apple Valley at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 7, on the road. The Jaguars have rescheduled a postponed game against Lakeville North and that contest may be made up at 4:15 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Dred Scott Field. Next week, the Jaguars host Rosemount at 4:15 p.m. Monday, April 11, and travel to Lakeville South for a 4:15 p.m. game Wednesday, April 13.
Jefferson wants to get off to a fast start. The Jaguars have reached the Class 3A, Section 6 semifinals the past three years and placed second at state in 2008. “Our goal is always to qualify for state,” said Gess. “We have a veteran team and our 12 seniors have shown great leadership so far. “Our captains have been tremendous running pre-season workouts. This is a special group of players who have a chance to finish high in a tough South Suburban Conference. Eastview is the pre-season conference title favorite, but Burnsville will also be strong. We should be right up there as well.”
Jefferson boys tennis coach Nick Hupton is optimistic about his team’s chances to place high in conference and section action this spring. “We have the core of our team returning from a season in which we were very competitive and lost a number of very close matches,” said Hupton. “We are also adding a number of very talented young players to our varsity roster.” Jefferson’s co-captains are senior Andy Moe and Michael McNutt. “Andy and Michael will provide leadership and junior Luke Robertson should be one of the top players in the section,” said coach Hupton. “With a strong nucleus of young and experienced players, we have a good chance to be one of the better teams in the conference.” Other members of Jefferson’s varsity tennis squad are ninth-grader Tim Larson, sophomore Josh Punnoose, sophomore Matt McNutt, senior Dan Baga, senior Patrick Herron and sophomore Phillip Punnoose. Jefferson will also get varsity contributions from junior Arthur Harris, junior Will Elfstrum, ninthgrader Andrew McNutt and junior Austin Bourgeouis. Jefferson will host Minneapolis Southwest in a 4 p.m. non-conference match Monday, April 11, on its high school courts. The Jaguars journey to Apple Valley for a 3:30 p.m. match Tuesday, April 12. Jefferson meets St. Thomas Academy at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Visitation High School in Mendota Heights.

He is the fourth Badger player to earn first- or secondteam All-America honors since 1948. “This is quite an honor to be voted as one of the top players in the country,” said Taylor in a Jordan Taylor statement released by the university. “I’m humbled by the recognition, but like all individuals, this is a reflection of the entire team.” Taylor averaged 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game for the Badgers this season. Taylor won the Minnesota Mr. Basketball award in 2008 after leading Benilde-St. Margaret’s to the state Class 3A title. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

Kennedy softball program continues to grow All-league players Lembeck-Bergeron, Olson return BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Jim Hanson took over a struggling Kennedy High School softball program last season and the Eagles nearly produced a .500 record. Kennedy was 10-11, including a 5-0 loss to Lakeville South in the first round of the section playoffs. The Eagles were 4-8 in conference play. Hanson said he believes his squad has the potential to be competitive again this spring. “We have good experience and speed,” said Hanson. “We are a little short in the pitching department but
could finish in the middle of the pack in the South Suburban Conference if we play good defense.” Kennedy’s co-captains are juniors. Kelsey McWilliams will play first base and Jill Haram returns to handle catching duties. Kennedy will also rely heavily on senior shortstop Heidie Lembeck-Bergeron, an all-conference player last spring. Junior Sam Olson is back to start at second base. She earned all-conference honorable mention last season. Kennedy’s infield will consist of McWilliams (first base), Olson (second), Lembeck-Bergeron (shortstop), seventh-
grader Morgan Garbrecht (third) and Haram (catcher). Kennedy junior Micaela Meredith is slated for duty in center field. A number of other juniors are vying for outfield positions, including Keli Eidem, Nicole Rein, Lucy Werkmeister, Sam Jaeger and Kim Campbell. Other varsity members are seniors Kahree Tahlberg, Maria Ford and Lauren Nelson. Kennedy’s opening games against Apple Valley and Rosemount this week have been postponed. The Eagles will travel to Eagan for a 4:15 p.m. game Wednesday, April 13. This will be the first season in years that Kennedy has been able to field teams at four levels – varsity, junior varsity, sophomore and freshman.
