When the former elementary and Lutheran high school building on Park Avenue became available in 2009, it wasn’t immediately embraced as the potential location for a community center by the leadership of Dar Al-Farooq of Minneapolis. The Muslim group was looking for a community center that would meet needs not being met at 983 17th Ave. S.E., and the former school building seemed like the answer Hyder Aziz was looking for. He proposed the Park Avenue site to Dar Al-Farooq leaders in 2009. “They rejected it,” he said. The location was deemed too far removed from the area they were serving. As acting executive director of Dar AlFarooq, Aziz pitched the idea again last year as the vacant school awaited a new tenant. The former school building, with its gymnasium and its shared athletic fields in adjoining Smith Park, was very appealing for the youth and school programs Dar Al-Farooq had planned as part of a new community center. Dar Al-Farooq leaders took another look at the location and its amenities last year. “Together we decided perhaps this is worth a try,” Aziz said. Last month the Bloomington City Council approved the organization’s plans for a youth and family center at the former school building. The building is intended to serve the Muslim CENTER: TO PAGE 25

Unfortunately for Bloomington Jefferson senior Dan Grady and his teammates, the 2010 football season deviated about as far from that script as possible. The Jaguar team was winless during its 2010 campaign. There were no thrills of victory during his senior year, but Grady will long remember an important facet to his senior season of high school football, the camaraderie and commitment the team shared as the losses accumulated. Of particular significance was the final defeat of 2010, a playoff loss to Eastview. After losing 12-0, several seniors sat together in the locker room for their final time as Jefferson football players. Jefferson students are headed in different directions. Sengly is staying close to home, attending the University of Minnesota to study graphic design. He’ll be close to Bloomington, but he plans to live on campus. Moving away from home, even if it’s just 20 minutes away, was a priority. The graphic design program was endorsed by a person he trusts – his brother – and the school’s proximity to Bloomington is a bonus. “It would have been a hassle to move far away,” he said. Vacanti is headed south – to Iowa State University. She is unsure of what she will study, but she liked the campus and wanted to live somewhere different, she said. “I wanted the full college experience.” Grady and O’Donnell are both attending Ohio State University in the fall. Moving away and attending a large college is comparable to the excitement of his freshman year at Jefferson, he recalled. He plans to study athletic training and kinesiology, and going to Ohio State will allow hit to “start a new chapter of my life, on my own.” O’Donnell has a similar fish-out-ofwater tale from her Jefferson years. Attending Jefferson meant meeting many new students, during her sophomore year. Her family moved from Pulaski, Wis., to Bloomington when her father landed a new job. Moving from outside Green Bay to Minnesota as a sophomore was hard. “People had their friend groups, it was hard to make friends,” she said. She persevered, however, and plans to study biology at Ohio State, with plans to eventually study medicine. She’ll be a fish out of water, again, but she won’t be alone. Her older sister, who lives in Columbus, Ohio, is her best friend, she noted. They spent four years together at Jefferson, but “it has gone by so fast,” Vacanti said. Fulfilling a 67-year-old promise A faculty member from the Minnesota School of Business in Richfield is producing a documentary of a 67-year-old World War II promise. Adjunct instructor and independent filmmaker Troy Antoine LaFaye is preparing to follow a Minnesota World War II veteran as he returns to France to fulfill a promise he made 67 years ago. Along with Lino Lakes author Lee Burtman, LaFaye is working on a documentary entitled, “As Promised – Return to Fénétrange,” which is based on Burtman’s book, “Fighting for Delphine,” the memoir of 86-year-old World War II veteran, Ken Krueger of Blaine. As with most independent films, there is no backing from a studio, network or distributor, LaFaye and Burtman need raise the funds to produce and promote

the documentary on their own. To date, $3,500 has been raised through private donations and fundraising events, but an additional $11,500 is needed to cover travel, lodging and other production-related expenses while in France. Based on a 67-year-old promise Ken Krueger made to a young French girl named Marguerite Klein, the film will document Ken’s journey back to France, as he retraces his footsteps as a motor messenger in World War II from the beaches of Normandy to the small town of Fénétrange where he met, fell in love with and became engaged to Marguerite. Army bureaucracy, Marguerite’s adversarial father and the end of the war would all conspire to prevent the wedding from ever taking place. Ken received his orders to go home,

but not before he promised his fiancée he would return as soon as he could. He would never fulfill that promise – until now – to add a final chapter to his memoir, which will begin with the words “I came back.” The estimated completion date of the project is mid-2012. LaFaye will also employ some of his students from the Digital Video and Media Program at Minnesota School of Business in Richfield on the project. Public Health Pathways: BY MAIA SEITZ • GUEST COLUMNIST Obesity has become the norm for many Americans and the root of many chronic health concerns. A majority of adults are now overweight or obese feeding chronic diseases, which by some estimates, account for 75 percent of healthcare spending in the U.S. The 2010 Hennepin County Survey of the Health of All the Population and the Environment (SHAPE) showed that about 20 percent of Hennepin County adults were obese (with another 33 percent overweight). That rate is as high as it was in the 2006 survey and notably higher than the rate in 1998 (14 percent) and 2002 (17 percent). While obesity is a result of many factors, doing something about it frequently starts with the way we eat. Reaching adults where they often spend the majority of their time – at work – can help.

Worksites get onboard The Hennepin County Food@Work initiative, funded through the Statewide Health

Improvement Program (SHIP), has many worksite partners striving to improve food choices for their employees. Working with a registered dietitian, employers identify food choices that are currently available to employees. For example, supplying healthier items in vending machines, cafeterias or at catered events and strategizing ways to offer healthier options. A big proponent of the Food@Work concept is Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) in Maple Grove. Since starting from scratch in promoting healthier foods more than four years ago, the survey and assessment company’s “Healthy Measures” employee wellness program has used two cafeteria audits to help shape its menu with competitively priced, healthier choices. It also includes low-calorie entrees every day with healthier ingredients like wholewheat crust for popular items like pizza and reduced portion sizes or not having unhealthy foods. “We got rid of our trough of ice cream cones and many other unhealthy items,” said Jenny Kahler, DRC’s health

and wellness coordinator. “Employees weren’t very happy with me for a couple of weeks, but they soon forgot about it. Our prices are reasonable so people are willing to try new things. A lot of our marketing is word-of-mouth. We also market things such as our fish tacos, pointing out how they are healthier than those of popular retailers.” It also helps to have a champion and promoter of the healthier nutrition, she said. The cafeteria manager, Tracy Ferrero, not only is open to introducing new things, but also is someone who has lost more than 175 pounds. She puts a good face on healthy eating as she promotes these items to employees in the cafeteria line. “We’re also working on doing take-home dinners,” Kahler said. “If we have a healthy entrée for lunch, employees can put in an order for more servings to bring home to their family.” Like other Food@Work partners, DRC also has an onsite farmers market, offered every Friday in the summer through a partnership with a Community Sponsored

Agriculture organization. It also added an all-healthy vending machine with options like protein bars, gluten-free offerings and sparkling water, which are based on strict standards set for vending in schools. “We didn’t even have time to conduct taste tests before the machine started running out of items ahead of schedule,” Kahler said. With sustained funding, SHIP initiatives such Food@Work could move as much as an additional 10 percent of the adult population into a normal weight category by 2015. Combined with reductions in tobacco use, cost savings through a reduction in obesity risk factors could result in projected savings of as much as $1.9 billion in Minnesota by 2015. Our summer reading philosophy is to “nourish minds, transform lives and build community by encouraging the love of reading, the joy of learning, and engagement with the arts, sciences, and humanities.” Creative thinking may be

required to motivate some kids and teens to pick up a book in the carefree summertime. “Bookawocky” programs are great reading motivators. Early grade-schoolers through high-schoolers can have a fun and engaging reading experience by participating in book clubs. “Guys Read,” “Daughter-Mother,” “Girls Only” and many other summer book clubs are popular. Utah woman arrested on cocaine charge BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A 33-year-old Salt Lake City woman faces one felony count after 114 grams of cocaine were found inside her vehicle while it was parked at a Bloomington motel. Bloomington police responded to a tip May 20, leading them to LaQuinta Inn, 7815 Nicollet Ave. S. After making contact with the suspect in one of the motel rooms, the woman consented to a search of her vehicle in the parking lot, giving officers the keys to the vehicle, according to the complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. A search of the vehicle by a police K9 indicated there were narcotics in the vehicle. Investigators found the narcotics, identified through a field test as cocaine, hidden inside a compartment of the vehicle that the suspect said she did not know how to open. The compartment was behind the rear seat of the sedan, designed to conceal its contents from a routine search. Such compartments are found occasionally in vehicles used for narcotics transportation, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The woman said that she was paid $300

to $500 per week to have the car registered in her name, was aware that the vehicle is being used to distribute narcotics and had driven a man around the Twin Cities the previous day for distribution purposes, according to the complaint. She was charged May 23 with one firstdegree felony count of sale of a controlled substance. If convicted she faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $300,000 to $1 million. The woman’s fingerprints were identical to those of a 31-year-old woman with a different name, who has an active, nonextraditable warrant in Oregon for identity theft, according to the complaint.

Office burglaries Four suites inside a Penn Avenue office building were burglarized during Memorial Day weekend. The burglaries were discovered 8 a.m. May 31. Red marks on door handles to the suites suggested that a fire extinguisher may have been used to damage the locking door handles of offices at 8100 Penn Ave. S., according to Stehlik. Woman arrested after stabbing at Bloomington library BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A 35-year-old Bloomington woman was arrested last week after a report she stabbed another woman in the entryway of a Bloomington library. It is unclear what the woman used to stab at the victim and a library security officer, but there was no indication she had any type of knife, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. It is thought the woman used a pen or pencil when stabbing the back of the woman entering the library and the stomach of the security officer who confronted her outside the library, Stehlik explained. Both victims had puncture wounds as a result of the incident, he noted. Bloomington police were called to Oxboro Library, 8801 Portland Ave. S., about 5:30 p.m. June 1. The

female victim said that as she was entering the library she heard a woman behind her, speaking in a foreign language. As the victim was about to pass through the second set of entrance doors she felt a sharp pain in her back. She yelled, “what are you doing” at the suspect, who turned around and exited the building, Stehlik said. A witness heard the victim, a 44-year-old Bloomington woman, yell as she was entering the library and saw that she was bleeding. A library security officer inside the building went outside to locate the suspect, who he recognized as a woman library staff members have had contact with previously. The security officer confronted her on the east side of the building. The suspect made a stabbing motion at the security officer, stabbing him in the stomach through his uniform shirt, Stehlik explained.

A fire extinguisher had been found sitting on a hallway floor inside the building prior to the burglary reports, according to building management.

Two 18-year-old men face possible firstdegree burglary charges after they were reported stealing bicycles from a Bloomington garage.

When the officer pulled out a baton to defend himself the suspect left the library property, walking to an apartment building immediately north, Stehlik said. Police responding to the incident found several people gathered outside the library, including the suspect’s child, Stehlik noted. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Bloomington Police Department for booking. She was uncooperative with the officer conducting the booking procedure, repeatedly getting up from a chair and walking around the room. She grabbed at the officer’s empty gun holster and Taser gun before being restrained by police, Stehlik said. The suspect was charged June 3 with two felony counts of assault in the second degree. Each count carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $14,000.

The men – of Bloomington and Eden Prairie – were reported to have entered an open garage on the 10400 block of Nesbitt Avenue South during the afternoon of May 31. A neighbor saw the men ride off on bicycles after entering the garage and called police, Stehlik said. The men were located at an apartment building near the intersection of West 106th Street and Brunswick Road. The wit-

ness provided a positive identification of the suspects, Stehlik added. When questioned individually each man claimed the bikes had been laying alongside the driveway of the house and not in the garage. Both men said they were trying to get to Eden Prairie to meet with a social worker and that they were homeless, according to Stehlik. The men later admitted they had entered the garage, he noted.

Alive and singing with emotion, the Great Northern Union Chorus is setting a new standard for Barbershop music. The Barbershop Harmony Society calls Barbershop music the original “Glee” for guys. Great Northern Union, a member group of the Barbershop Harmony Society, was formed 25 years ago with the purpose of delivering highoctane harmony, outrageous

in 21 competitions and, out of 800 choirs worldwide, never finished lower than ninth place, with a third-place finish in last year’s International Convention. The choir has produced six CDs, two of which have been recognized and received nominations by the Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards under the categories of best Barbershop Song, “It's a Grand Night for Singing,” best Barbershop Album, “It's a Grand Night for Singing,” best Religious Album, “Bound for Glory,” and best Religious Song, “Bound for Glory.” While devoted to Barbershop, Great Northern Union’s repertoire consists of

Apart from the competitions and tours, “Great Northern Union is on a mission to involve an increasing number of young men in this art form,” Slinde said. For the last six years, in the spring, the chorus hosts a collaborative concert with an area college or university. The choir has worked with Luther College, St. Olaf University, St. Johns University, Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. “This summer marks our second year forming a Summer Collegiate Choir with participants from at least 13 colleges as well as some middle schools and high schools,” Slinde said. The Summer Collegiate

Choir will perform at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, at the Como Park Pavilion, 1225 Estabrook Dr., St. Paul. During the performance the young men will sing by themselves, then the Great Northern Union Choir will accompany them on stage. “Our goal is to simply expose these young men to this genre of music. We look at music as being a lifelong activity,” Slinde said. Prior to the International Convention, Great Northern Union will hold a send-off performance, “On to Fame,” at 7 p.m., on Saturday, July 2, at the Hopkins High School Auditorium, 2400 Lindbergh Dr., Hopkins. “Barbershoppers are huge hams and love performing before an audience,” Slinde said. The Eden Prairie Optimists will host its annual All-American Fishing Derby 9-11 a.m., Saturday, June 11, at Round Lake Park in Eden Prairie The fishing derby is co-sponsored by the Eden Prairie Optimists and by the city of Eden Prairie Parks and Recreation Department. The Optimists fishing derby is held again at Round Lake Park after being cancelled the past two years because of low water levels in the lake. Children under the age of 15 can register at the Optimists booth at Round Lake the day of the event from 8-9 a.m. An awards program will follow the fishing derby. Prior to the start of the fishing competition, Optimist and professional fishing guide Jim Markham will give a demonstration of casting and fishing techniques and tips.

Registration is limited to the first 125 youths. A parent or guardian must accompany all children. Fishing rods and bait are not provided. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded in each of four age groups for the largest fish caught. The age groups are 4 years and under; 5-7 year olds; 8-10 year olds; and 11-14 year olds. Markham, along with fellow Optimists Gary Lambert and Bruce Balfanz, chair the Fishing Derby. The Optimist Club is a civic organization with a strong commitment to America’s youth and uses this event to promote National Fishing Week for Eden Prairie youth. Midwest Outer Realm Followers delves into the paranormal BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS An interest in paranormal activity is wildly becoming more and more popular with shows like “Ghost Hunters,” on Syfy, “Paranormal State,” on A&E and “Most Haunted,” on the Travel channel. In Minnesota, over 30 paranormal societies service the Midwest as investigators of the unexplained. The Midwest Outer Realm Followers is one of these groups aiming to provide evidence of paranormal activity. The five-member organization, led by Eric Moen, has been working in alleged haunted homes and public establishments since May 2010. “We will ascertain what is there and what isn’t there,” Moen said. MORF uses a wide variety of scientific and “intuitive” equipment, including electromagnetic frequency detectors, digital thermometers, both digital and analog voice recorders, extensive photographic equipment with infrared capabilities and a homemade Frank’s Box, a modified AM/FM radio that continually scans the AM or FM radio bands, according to Moen. “Spirits are thought to communicate better on the AM or FM radio bands after being asked a question,” Moen said. One question Moen and his crew had asked at an investigation to a suspected presence was, “How did you die?” The response that came back from the Frank’s Box very clear: “I killed myself.” “We ask our questions and we get voices recorded on our devices that we can’t hear with our ears. For some reason, the spirit world is able to manipulate electronic devices so we have got some really interesting evidence from different places,” Moen said. Skeptics have said that what is being heard from the Frank’s Box is nothing more than fragments of voices, such as announces from other radio frequencies. But Moen’s rebuttal is that what he is getting is clear, full sentences from one direct source and not jumbled words cross-

The intuitive equipment Moen refers to his personal psychic ability. According to Moen, he can sense the positive or negative energy that comes with the paranormal phenomenon. “I get a feeling whether something may be malicious or not,” Moen said. This past spring at an investigation in Richfield, MORF videotaped inconclusive but startling evidence. The client was concerned about unexplained knocking and other phenomenon in his basement according to Moen. Moen and another member of MORF spent the entire night in the basement filming and recording. At one point Moen felt his hair was pulled. “After reviewing the tapes and the audio we have evidence of a floating orb,” Moen said, “To be honest, I don’t know

what it was. It could have been a spider web or it could have been paranormal, that is why it is unexplained.” Getting conclusive evidence is very difficult in the paranormal investigation field, according to Moen. “We would like to get a full body apparition in our shots, it is the Holy Grail to capture a ghost, but it is extremely rare for any group to capture anything on video of the paranormal,” he said. At an investigation in Jackson, Minn., at the Loon Lake Cemetery Moen swears he saw a ghost. “We were sitting in the cemetery and I heard something about 30 yards away; I though that it was just someone coming to check us out so I illuminated my flashlight in the area and I saw this woman,” Moen said. According to Moen, the woman was

wearing a dress that looked to have been from the early 1900s. “She looked about 45 years old and what struck me was the way she was dressed in a gown very old looking. I didn’t want to blind her so I clicked off my flashlight, then realized what was really there, so only a second later I turned back on my flashlight and she was gone. She didn’t have any time to run away,” Moen said. MORF was at the cemetery investigating claims of sightings of a Mary Jane apparition and that is whom Moen believes he saw. “I can not conclusively say it was evidence because no one else saw it and in this field we try to back things up with hard evidence. Personal experiences are one thing but we stake our reputation on providing evidence,” Moen said. With each person who believes in paranormal occurrences, there are many who do not. “People will just not believe there is anything else out there,” Moen said. Moen feels that his work is structured on a belief system, if a person wants to believe, they will and if they do not, they won’t. “I have produced remarkable electromagnetic voice phenomenon of things that have told us to ‘get out,’ or ‘this house is haunted,’ by voices that none of us have conjured up that show up on our equipment, but the skeptics still say we did it ourselves,” Moen said. The mission of MORF is simply to investigate, document and raise awareness of the paranormal. “It is fascinating to document the paranormal. I want to prove that there is an afterlife,” Moen said. Peace Riders, World’s Biggest Hug event set for June 19 in Bloomington Bloomington Daymakers Rotary welcomes the world and the Peace Riders on June 19 to the Mendota Bridge area near Historic Fort Snelling for a Guinness Record attempt at the World’s Biggest Hug. This free event is designed as a health walk as part of the 16th annual World Peace and Prayer Day, which aims to unite ‘All nations, All Faiths, One Prayer,’ at summer solstice as they ask the Creator to heal relationships and to heal Mother Earth. The Peace Riders, led by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, will leave on horseback from Pickerel Lake, S.D, June 5 and will cross the Mendota Bridge on Sunday, June 19, at approximately 2:30 p.m. The route through the metro area will include side roads from Shakopee to Mendota Heights with maps posted on the event website. This family-friendly Father’s Day afternoon event includes a Guinness Record attempt at the World’s Biggest Hug, coordinated by Rotary club members. The Guinness Record attempt is a fun tool to help attract a crowd to help bring awareness to the Peace Riders and the international event being hosted for the first time in a major metropolitan area. “There are different challenges with horses riding through the suburbs and closing major roads than when the event has been held in other countries” Rotarian Stephanie Smith said. “Minnesotans are creative and are committed to a good process and relationships while working on event details, so who better to host this international event and where better than Bdote?” The Dakota word for the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers is Bdote, which means the meeting place and which is well documented as the location of the Dakota creation story. Fort Snelling was built on the bluff just above this sacred place where indigenous communities would come to pray and trade and make agreements. “It only seems appropriate that World Peace and Prayer day be held at this gathering place and to have so many diverse community groups and ethnic organizations coming to the event.” Smith said. The council’s approval will require additional onsite parking, and plans for additional parking should it be deemed necessary by the city. “They haven’t made things easy,” Aziz said. The council’s requirements resulted in the organization delaying by one year its plans to begin a prekindergarten through fifth-grade school. “There’s demand for private schools in our community,” according to Aziz. The building constraints, however, will limit the scope of the school to an elementary facility, he noted. Dar Al-Farooq is moving ahead with plans to open the building for some programs by this fall. Aziz doesn’t expect the programs and services at the new Bloomington community center to be an overnight success. It will take time

The Dar Al-Farooq membership is the “most diverse group of Muslims that any community center in Minnesota might have,” according to Aziz. The membership represents at least 26 countries, he said. Given its diversity, none of its members feel like they’re out of place, according to Julian Chippendale, the office manager for the center. “It’s not an immigrant center,” Aziz noted. The Park Avenue building is being purchased through support of the Dar Al-Farooq membership. “One-hundred percent of the funding has come from our members,” Aziz said. “One-hundred percent of them are Minnesota taxpayers.” There are more than 30 Muslim centers across the Twin Cities and more than 150,000 Muslims living in the Twin Cities, according to Aziz. “Our needs

are growing,” he said. The growing needs of the Muslim community, and the Bloomington solution Dar Al-Farooq came up with, has raised objections from neighbors living near the former school. One of the primary objections to the proposal was the increase in traffic and parking that would be generated by a community center that will also include space for Muslim men to gather for prayer on Friday afternoons and other times during the year. Aziz doesn’t know how many men will come to the Park Avenue site for Friday afternoon prayers, but Dar AlFarooq plans to have two separate prayer hours if necessary to keep the building from overcrowding. Not unlike the churches in his Minneapolis neighborhood on a Sunday morning, the new community center will be a gathering place for a finite period of time on Friday afternoons, he explained. In life you have to show some understanding for your neighbors, according to Aziz. “You hope and pray that your neighbors would do the same for you,”

he said. Part of Dar Al-Farooq’s mission will be to coexist with neighborhood residents and respond to concerns that are raised when the building is in operation, Aziz said. “I’m really looking forward to making friends with the neighbors.” Hundreds of people attended an open house in March to show off the building Dar Al-Farooq intended to purchase. Aziz estimates that 800 people attended the open house throughout the day, many of whom he had never met before, he noted. Chippendale said that many visitors wanted to know what Dar Al-Farooq was intending to purchase with the donations collected for a new community center. He expects many of the visitors that day won’t be regular visitors once the programs begin in Bloomington. The building shares outdoor athletic amenities with the city through an agreement that began with Bloomington Public Schools and will continue under Dar Al-Farooq’s ownership. Arich Juberian Juberian has been one of Kennedy’s hottest hitters in the Class 3A, Section 6 baseball playoffs. The sophomore had a three-run triple in the Eagles’ 11-3 win over Minneapolis Southwest and hit a two-run homer in an 8-1 victory over Minneapolis South. He also homered against Benilde-St. Margaret’s during a 14-4 victory.

Class AA track qualifiers Bloomington will be represented by four athletes in this weekend’s state Class AA track and field meet at Hamline University. Preliminaries start at 9 a.m. Friday, June 10. Jaguars work overtime to claim section softball crown Jefferson meets Hastings in state tourney opener BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson worked overtime in the Class 3A, Section 3 softball playoffs, and the payoff was the Jaguars’ first state tournament appearance. The second-seeded Jaguars needed 15 and eight innings to dethrone defending state champion and No. 1 seed Burnsville in the final two rounds of the Section 3 playoffs last week. Jefferson, 21-4, edged the Blaze 2-1 in both games to advance to state. The Jaguars play Hastings in the Class 3A quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Winner of that game advances to the semifinals at 3 p.m. Thursday. Championship game is 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 10. “We are looking forward to playing in the state tournament,” said Jefferson head coach Penny Witzenburg. “We know Hastings has a very good team and a good pitcher. “But we have been getting contributions from everybody and have no holes in our lineup.” Jefferson needed that balance and talent to get through a tough Section 3 tournament. The Jaguars were able to survive two marathon games against Burnsville in the double-elimination portion of the tourney.

Jefferson, 14-2 overall, opened the tourney with a 20-8 victory over Farmington May 23 and earned a hardfought 11-10 quarterfinal victory over Burnsville May 25. Jefferson needed 15 innings and 3 hours and 13 minutes to defeat the Blaze 2-1 June 1 at Eagan. Cassie Santiago drove in the winning run with a double in the top of the 15th. Jefferson and Burnsville battled through 13 scoreless innings until Nicole Tobon put the Jaguars ahead with a home run in the top of the 14th. However, the Blaze responded with the tying run in the bottom half of that inning. Later that day, Jefferson and Burnsville were deadlocked at 1-1 in the deciding game of the tournament before the game was suspended after seven innings because of darkness. The game was resumed the following day and Santiago came through with a bases-loaded single to left for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. “Our pitchers and defense played well, giving up only 13 runs in six playoff games,” said Witzenburg. “We were able to use three pitchers – Laura Falkanger, Hannah Evavold and Cassie Santiago – and that pitching depth really helped.” Jefferson opened the tourney with a 6-0 victory over Apple Valley May 23 before losing 5-2 to Park of Cottage Grove. Jefferson stayed alive in the playoffs by beating Eastview 10-4 May 27. Falkanger hit a grand slam in the second as the Jaguars built an 8-0 lead against Eastview. Sophomore Karmann Carroll had three hits and three RBI. Santiago added three hits and scored three times. Jefferson followed with a 9-2 victory over Park May 31 that sent the Jaguars to the final against Burnsville.

Winner of that game advances to the state championship game at 4 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Chanhassen High School against second seed Eden Prairie (14-1) or third seed Stillwater (14-2). Third-place game is 2 p.m. Friday at Chanhassen. “This team has worked hard to get to state and received excellent senior leadership,” said Gregus. “We have great kids with a burning desire to be successful. “We have a balanced scoring attack. We had six players score 10 or more

goals this season. And other players have unselfishly accepted their roles.” Brenna Murray led the Jaguar attack in the section championship game with five goals and one assist. Carrie Bayard supplied a hat trick for the winners. Laura Berglund scored two goals and had three assists. Kelly Lorton had one goal. Elizabeth Wittenborg chipped in with two assists. Karma Knutson had one assist. Oralee Hespenheide tended goal for the Jaguars and made nine saves. Jefferson turned in one of its finest performances of the season in defeating Kennedy in the semis. Wittenborg had two goals each. Jefferson opened the playoffs with a 20-8 win over Farmington May 23. Wittenborg scored four goals and picked up three assists. Jefferson’s Rosen races to section boys track title Jaguar freshman finishes first in 800-meter run BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS He may be only a ninth-grader, but Jefferson’s Matt Rosen performed like a seasoned veteran in the Section 3AA track and field championships May 31 and June 2. Rosen placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 56.13 seconds on the University of St. Thomas track. Rosen earned a state berth along with Jefferson teammate Jan Ketterson, a junior. Ketterson finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 9:39.49. He placed third in the 1,600 (4:30.36). Jefferson’s boys squad was eighth with 37 points in the 15-team Section 3AA field. Apple Valley won the team title (107) and Eastview was second (105), finishing ahead of third-place Prior Lake (92.5). Jaguar senior Ryan Jerve placed fifth in the 1,600 (4:34.39). He was seventh in the shot put (45-1). “Rosen won the 800 with a strong finish,” said Jefferson head boys track coach Jon Leverenz. “Matt shows a lot of maturity and strength for a ninth-grader. “Ketterson ran a solid race in the 3,200 on a blustery day. He was just nipped by an Eastview runner at the finish line while placing third in the 1,600.” Leverenz announced his team’s individual awards for the 2011 season. Ketterson and Steve Jonas shared the Most Valuable Performer award. Other award winners were Zach Roberts (Jaguar Award), Karl Olsen (Rookie of the Year), Jonas (Quickest Cat), Jordan Lovestrand (Most Improved), Ketterson (Energizer Bunny), and Justin Hendricks (Most Improved Distance Runner). Also earning team honors were Darren Kessel-Baker (Best Thrower), Trent Phipps (Most Improved Thrower), Jonas (Best Jumper/Vaulter) and Marco Garcia (Most Improved Jumper/Vaulter). Ketterson and Jonas were all-confer-

ence selections. Receiving honorable mention were Rosen, Kessel-Baker, Jerve and Olsen. Eggleston heads to state Another Jefferson track athlete headed to state is sophomore Claire Eggleston. She placed second in the girls high jump, clearing 5-2. Eggleston helped Jefferson’s girls team place ninth in the Section 3AA meet with 30 points. Prior Lake won the team title with 129 points, placing ahead of runner-up Apple Valley (104) and third-place Eastview (101.5). Jefferson sophomore Nicola Deak placed sixth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles with times of 17.25 and 48.34. Junior Eliza Zachary placed seventh in the high jump (5-0). Senior Alyssa Solberg finished eighth in the shot put (35-6). In the discus, senior Megan Scherber placed fifth (112-7) and Solberg finished sixth (111-9). Kennedy highlights One Kennedy track athlete qualified for state out of Section 3AA. Senior Labrishia Michael placed second in the

discus (119-6). Michael almost qualified for state in the shot put, placing fourth at 38-1 3/4. Sophomore Kelly Jeans finished fifth in the pole vault (10-1). Junior Lindi Pederson was seventh in the 400 (1:02.67). Kennedy’s 4x200 relay of Jeans, Kelsi Kiehl, Rajanee Michael and Pederson placed fifth (1:48.35). The Eagles’ 4x100 relay was sixth (51.56). Members of that relay were Jeans, Natalia Erickson, Marissa Melby and Rajanee Michael. Kennedy’s boys team was 13th with 12 points in the Section 3AA meet. The Eagles didn’t have any state qualifiers but did have several athletes who finished high. Senior Ferguson Stanford was fourth in the high jump (6-4), Sophomore Johnathan Hess placed 10th in the 3,200 (10:06.34). Kennedy’s fourth-place 4x200 relay consisted of Caleb Miller, Brandon Bell, Stanford and Abu Kamara. The Eagles’ time was 1:31.78. Miller, Lexis Jones, Bell and Kamara were seventh in the 4x100 relay in 44.08.

Kennedy baseball defies odds in section playoffs 10th-seeded Eagles are one game from state tournament berth BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Kennedy didn’t get much respect when the Class 3A, Section 6 baseball tournament pairings were announced. The Eagles were seeded 10th in the 12-team field. But Kennedy has defied that low seeding and the odds by earning a berth in the Section 6 championship game. Kennedy entered the playoffs with a 7-13 record but won four straight to gain a spot in the section finals against Robbinsdale Armstrong or Hopkins June 7. A second game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Parade Stadium if necessary to decide the champion in the double-elimination tourney. Kennedy opened the playoffs with an 8-1 victory over seventh-seeded Minneapolis South May 26.

Arich Juberian hit a two-run homer for the winners. Zach Horn went 3-for3 and drove in one run. Nordby contributed three hits and two RBI. Kevin Houts added a two-run triple. Nordby pitched six strong innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Reliever Josh Flanders pitched the seventh and retired three consecutive batters. “Our pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes and letting the defense do its work,” said Kennedy head coach Matt Hanson. “Offensively, we did well, finishing with 12 hits. “Our batters were very disciplined. It was a great way to start the playoffs with a total team effort.” Winning momentum Kennedy kept its momentum going in the second round, defeating Benilde-St. Margaret’s 14-4 in five innings May 27. Chad Allmann pitched three innings to get the win. Flanders threw two scoreless innings of relief. Nordby came through with a tworun homer. Horn had three hits and

Kennedy played another solid game in third-round action June 2 at Aligmagnet Park in Burnsville. The Eagles overpowered Minneapolis Southwest 11-3. Kennedy scored 10 runs in the first inning and the rout was on. Juberian, Paul Baltes and Horn had two hits apiece. Caleb Carlson provided a tworun single. The Eagles used three pitchers in the triumph – Montana Schowalter, Patrick Howe and Mitch Rowland. Schowalter was the winning pitcher. Later that day, Kennedy beat Armstrong 7-4 in the winners’ bracket as Nordby pitched a complete game. Nick Warren produced three hits and two RBI. Horn and Nordby had two hits each. One of Horn’s hits was a two-run homer. “We played well in both wins over Southwest and Armstrong,” said Hanson. “We were strong on the mound and came up with big hits.”

Kennedy HS grad retires Scot Davis, a graduate of Bloomington Kennedy High School, has retired as Owatonna’s head wrestling coach after 25 seasons. Davis also coached nine years at Hutchinson, Bird Island-Lake Lillian and Belcourt, N.D. Davis is the winningest high school wrestling coach in U. S. history with 984 dual meet victories. His 1998 and 2005 Owatonna teams won state Class 3A championships.

Kennedy BB camp dates There will be four separate Kennedy boys basketball summer camp sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. at Kennedy High School. Offensive camp is June 20-23 followed by the defensive camp June 27-30, shooting camp July 18-21 and team camp July 25-28. Cost is $35 for one camp and $100 for all four camps. Erickson stars at St. Olaf St. Olaf College sophomore Molly Erickson of Bloomington was a standout for the Oles’ women’s golf team in 2010-11. The Jefferson High School graduate earned all-conference and all-region honors. Erickson was also selected Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week twice. Erickson helped St. Olaf place first in the Wartburg Spring Invitational with rounds of 75 and 80. She was fourth individually in the conference championships. Erickson was fourth overall in the MIAC with a stroke average of 82.3.
