Amie Iacono, 29, of Plymouth has been charged with felony-level theft for allegedly stealing a platinum ring and a tennis bracelet from an Eden Prairie home where she worked as a housecleaner. The following details and allegations were in a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court: On Dec. 10, an Eden Prairie man reported a platinum ring had been stolen from their bedroom about a week earlier, and he also reported a tennis bracelet had been stolen in July. They suspected Iacono, their housecleaner, based on her behavior in early December. Eden Prairie police checked the Automatic Pawn System and determined Iacono had pawned a tennis bracelet July 20 and a platinum ring Dec. 2 at the Pawn America in Hopkins. While being interviewed by an Eden Prairie detective, Iacono admitted to stealing the two pieces of jewelry, which were valued over $1,000. She could face up to five years in prison, a fine up to $10,000 or both.

Repeat DWI offender Alexsandr Naboka, 29, of Minneapolis has been charged with first-degree Driving While Impaired, a felony, after he was pulled over New Year’s Day in Eden Prairie. The following details and allegations were provided in a Criminal Complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court: At 1:49 a.m., Naboka’s car was stopped for various traffic violations. Officers saw him speeding on Highway 5 near Mitchell Road; he crossed the lane divider twice, crossed the fog line once and continuously weaved within his lane of traffic; and, he exited at Prairie Center Drive, failing to come to a complete stop at the red light. The officer approached the vehicle and could smell “an overwhelming odor of alcohol.” Naboka was ultimately placed under arrest, and around 3 a.m. he took a breath test, which recorded a .20 blood alcohol concentration. His driver’s license has a restriction for any use of alcohol or drugs, which invalidates his license. Naboka had been convicted of Driving While Intoxicated on Jan. 9, 2002; Jan. 24, 2002 and July 28, 2003. He could face 3-7 years in prison, a fine up to $14,000 (or both) and a conditional release.

Hopkins to get a taste of Japanese New Year’s Japan America Society will hold celebration Jan. 16 at Eisenhower BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many Americans – even if they’ve never been to one – are vaguely familiar with Chinese New Year’s celebrations. The Hopkins community will have the opportunity this month to see another culture’s celebration. The Japan America Society of Minnesota will hold its New Year’s celebration, “Shinnenkai,” 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Eisenhower Community Center. The society has been holding the celebration for almost 20 years, but this is the first year it will be held in Hopkins – it is typically held in St. Paul. The society’s executive director Ben van Lierop lives in Hopkins with his family and was familiar with the Eisenhower Community Center. “We wanted a place that would work for us,” he said. “It seemed to be the right situation, so we decided to go for it.” The society’s celebration is one of the biggest Japanese New Year’s celebrations in the metro area. It has drawn between 300 and 500 people in previous years. The family-friendly event is open to the public and will feature live performances, food and contests. It will feature Mochizuki rice pounding – a New Year’s tradition in Japan – art, exhibits, calligraphy, an

If you go The Japan America Society of Minnesota will holds its Shinnenkai New Year’s celebration 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Eisenhower Community Center, 1001 Hwy. 7, Hopkins. The event is open to the public. Admission is $17 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, $7 for children ages 6-17 and free for children 5 and under. Family packages are also available. For more information, call 612-627-9357 or visit mn-japan.org.

Oriental bazaar and a karaoke competition. “We want it to be as authentic as we can make it, given the fact we are in Minnesota,” van Lierop said. Though there might be a couple similarities, he said, the Japanese New Year’s celebration is different than the Chinese. He recommended anyone interested in learning more about the culture to attend the event. 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit in both Japanese and Chinese culture. China will celebrate its new year Feb. 14, but Japan begins its new year Jan. 1. The reason Minnesota’s Japan Society holds its New Year’s celebration later in January is because many families travel over the holidays. Saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new one is a big deal in Japan, van Lierop said. “Japanese New Year’s is a family-oriented day,” he said. “It’s important in the culture.”

Eden Prairie schools put science curriculum under the microscope BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School District administration asserted that student achievement in science is lacking, and the School Board agreed during its most recent meeting. The School Board reviews achievement in science, math, reading and other topics on an annual basis. “We assert the organization is not making reasonable progress toward achieving the Board’s stated results in Science,” stated the administration’s report for the Jan. 4 meeting. The report noted a lack of progress in fifth-grade, eighth-grade and in high school. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment scores indicated stagnant growth, with all categories of high school students progressing below the expected rate, according to the report. MCAs are used to measure student achievement. Math and reading MCAs are required by the state to measure yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law. Other assessments showed better results for some students but they also showed that an achievement gap still exists with other student groups, according to the administration’s report. “We have work to do, and I think that we just know this,” Supt. Melissa Krull said. She said the amount of science instruction time is inconsistent in elementary schools. Not all students are receiving science instruction from their homeroom teacher, either, she said. Krull said increasing classroom time for science, eliminating the grade 5 transition with the K-6 change, instilling aspects of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) and reviewing which instructors teach science should help improve science achievement. Boardmember Ranee Jacobus said if it’s determined all elementary teachers would teach science to their homeroom students, rather than a teacher outside the normal classroom, she wanted to make sure the homeroom teachers are getting science training. When Boardmember Holly Parker asked why so few English Language Learners were taking the MCA science test, High School Principal Conn McCartan said students may opt out of ELL program before they get to their biology class, so they’re not counted in the ELL category of MCA results. Some ELL students may also not show up for the test since students take it outside their classroom.

The state doesn’t require students take its science MCA test, unlike the requirement for math and reading. “Is it fair to say kids are skipping the [science] test?” Jacobus asked. “Yes,” McCartan said. McCartan said if they can get more students to sit for the test, they could see a bump in the scores, and he could take more leadership steps to improve the test participation. He later noted that although the MCA test scores are behind when compared to other districts, the SAT and college enrollment examples are on par or better than other districts and the state average. That could highlight a difference in how school districts sequence science courses differently, according to McCartan. When Jacobus asked what things have been done since it was determined last year that reasonable progress was not being made in science, Oak Point Intermediate School principal Chuck Richter mentioned increased writing and vocabulary exercises in fifth- and sixth-grade curriculum to better prepare for the written portion of science tests. Boardmember Chuck Mueller said more weight must be put on science curriculum, and Boardmember John Estall said it would be good to see the enthusiasm and effort put toward science that is put toward the popular music program – a comment that he heard from a parent, he said. To get a clearer assessment of science scores from the administration and to create more incentive for students to sit for the MCA science test, Jacobus proposed an amendment to the motion for accepting the administration’s report. The amendment called for the administration to provide other indicators of science achievement and to create incentives for students (high school students in particular) to take the test. One idea mentioned was making the MCA science test required. Parker said the MCAs have been given for three years, so she expected changes would have been made sooner. Parker also said she didn’t think the administration’s report adequately showed ways science performance could be improved, which was turned into an amendment to have the administration come back March 8 with those improvement steps. The motion to accept the report (along with the two amendments) passed unanimously. Info: edenpr.org.

MME gets new tennis courts A grant through Hennepin County makes it possible BY CHRIS DILLMANN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Five new tennis courts will be added at Minnetonka Middle School East with a $100,000 check from the Hennepin County’s Youth Sports Grant Visit Program. minnlocal.com The Minnetonka for videos, more School District accept- photos and daily ed the grant Jan. 6 at news updates the school board meeting. Hennepin County’s 6th District Commissioner Jan Callison, who represents the area, was on hand. Both the district’s middle schools only have two existing courts, meaning MME will now have seven courts total. The Youth Sports Grants Programs are used to help facilitate new or improve existing youth facilities throughout the county. “The county has a strong interest in the health of the residents,” Callison said.

“We know we need a population that is healthy, and it starts with junior high and high school. So we see it as an investment in the future of the county.” The revenue for the grants is gathered in part from the sales tax revenue generated by a sales tax ostensibly to help fund the Twin’s new ballpark, Target Field. Grants go to those who can provide projects that represent a need in the community, sustainability of the project, environmental sensibility and community commitment. The grant will be matched by school district funds from long-term maintenance of $400,000 to repave and repair existing courts and construct the new courts. The district says they have seen a high demand of those wishing to play tennis and have the attitude that it will not only benefit students but everybody in the community wishing to use the courts. A similar project is scheduled for Minnetonka Middle School West this summer.

New school configuration – same tradition of excellence Discussion over the past few months of all that will be new in our schools has been exciting and affirming for some while difficult and MELISSA challenging for KRULL others. Guest The one con- Columnist stant over time has been this: everyone involved – parents, staff, and School Board members – has been advocating for what they honestly think is best for children. Our Continued Excellence through Transformation process will culminate next fall with our schools transitioning from serving students in kindergarten through grade four to serving students through grade six. This week, the new elementary school boundary map that facilitates this transition was shared with families as well as the new school hours for the fall. I do not suggest nor pretend that the journey we have embarked on will be an easy one. But what I also know to be true is this: our dedicated teaching staff, our school leadership teams and our district administration are steadfast in maintaining the will and the capacity to meet every challenge and to overcome every obstacle as we move forward.

I know that as long as we keep our focus on the tasks at hand, and direct our energies toward successfully implementing our Transformation Plan, we will reach our goals. But we want you to know that this transformation is about much more than a change in grade configuration or a new boundary map. Eden Prairie Schools is improving learning conditions for all students. We remain committed to the elimination of barriers to student learning regardless of their level of proficiency. We are well on our way to reaching this goal by focusing on the following. Replicate Success Eden Prairie Schools will phase in, across all sites, some of the successful instructional programs and practices that are currently being used at Forest Hills Elementary School and other schools in the district. This will include school-wide systems for building and sustaining long-term relationships with students and families, extending learning time through enhanced before and after school programming, and using frequent and consistent assessments in reading and math so teachers can make “just in time” changes to instruction for students. Simultaneously, we will phase in newly-defined best

practices that have emerged through the K-6 Ideas and Possibilities Task Force by ensuring that all of our elementary school schedules include a: • 120-minute literacy learning block, • 75-minute math learning block, • 50-minute science learning block • 10 minutes are being added into the student day. This is the equivalent of over four additional days of learning in one year. Eliminate Transitions Eden Prairie Schools will eliminate the grade four to five school transition for students. This carries key benefits in minimizing the achievement regression our students currently experience in this transition as well as strengthening the student and family relationships with our schools over a seven-year period. Balance Schools Eden Prairie Schools will eliminate the isolation of low-income students. By balancing our schools, we intend to provide learning communities that reflect the changing demographics of the city in which we live. At our Spanish immersion school, too, we will pursue multiple strategies to ensure future balance.

Unify the Split-Campus School Eden Prairie Schools will unite the now split Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School in order to not only sustain the current level of success but also build upon it. Align Preschool Programming Eden Prairie Schools will make an investment in its youngest learners with its Early Childhood Center. A new alignment of preschool programming, as well as offering more classes for more families, will serve as an effective and efficient strategy for providing these students opportunities to best prepare them for learning in our K-6 schools. Our schools are great today, and this work will help ensure that they are even better tomorrow. We must constantly attend to the horizon before us to ensure that we are making the changes necessary to ensure that students have what they need while they are in our classrooms and have what they need to be successful once they graduate. Thank you for continuing to partner with us in the education of your child. Thank you also for joining us as we continue to offer our students the support and guidance they deserve to become successful in our diverse and changing world. Krull is the Superintendent of Eden Prairie Schools.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Technology initiatives To the editor: I am a student at Hopkins High School and wish to say the initiatives that were approved in the November referendum will certainly benefit me.

Increased funding for technology is going to help Hopkins High be a school for the 21st century, and if that means people have to pay a little extra, they should. We students are the future. Would you like the future to be bright?

Seniors must become their own ‘fraud squad’ LETTERS TO THE EDITOR BY BOB RAMSEY • GUEST COLUMNIST We hear a lot today about seniors becoming victims of fraud. It’s not that seniors are bigger suckers than others. Plenty of younger people get scammed too. It’s just that older folks are targeted because they often have savings set aside, they are a large, growing “market” and many have compromised physical or mental health conditions that make them more vulnerable. Common scams aimed at seniors include foreign lottery hoaxes, phony charities, bogus home repair contracts and too-good-tobe-true giveaway offers. Of course, scammers are creative and new schemes appear almost weekly. Unfortunately, they often work because they contain a grain of truth and people want to believe in unbelievable deals. That’s why part of vital aging and remaining independent is managing your own resources and protecting what’s yours from con artists and sweet-talking

swindlers. As it turns out, God really does help those who help themselves. We all know the cautions we should follow: Don’t give out personal information, don’t pay for a prize you’ve already “won,” don’t wire money to people you don’t know and don’t rush to buy under pressure. It always pays to exercise the power of the pause. Four more of my favorite tips: dare to hang up on unwanted calls, don’t let overly friendly strangers into your home, don’t believe a deal is legitimate just because it appears in print or on TV or comes through the mail, and remember, you can’t win a lottery if you didn’t buy a ticket. It’s also important not to be too embarrassed to report a crime. Being a victim of fraud doesn’t mean you’re foolish. Not reporting it does. Life’s too short (especially for seniors) to become paranoid; but the old military mantra, “Trust – but verify,” is still sound advice. After all, you’ve worked too long

and hard for your money just to give it away to the bad guys. Today’s seniors have the life experience and elder wisdom to shut down scammers and “trunk slammers” (fly-by-nighters), but they have to become their own “fraud squad” to do it. The best advice is “when in doubt, check it out.” If you suspect or spot fraud, blow the whistle. Here’s who to call (besides your local police): the Better Business Bureau at 1-800-646-6222, the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800657-3767 or the FBI at 612-376-3200. The truth is that seniors have the power to turn the tables on crooks. The trick is to be smart, be informed, be cautious, be alert and be assertive. Criminals only succeed when the community lets them. Don’t let them. This year, resolve to live fraud-free and show predators it doesn’t pay to mess with today’s breed of seasoned citizens. St. Louis Park resident Bob Ramsey is a lifelong educator, writer and advocate for vital aging.

For the benefit of all, come to ‘Taste’ To the editor: I wear several Eden Prairie hats as resident, father, math teacher, volunteer, husband of a school board member and president of the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools. Regardless of the hat, it’s been challenging to watch recent school-related events. This letter is written with my FEPS president hat on, and in this role I offer no opinion on these events. Rather, I write to let all know FEPS will offer an opportunity for the entire community to come together in support of teachers and students when it holds the Taste of Eden Prairie on Feb. 26. It feels like a good time for a nonpartisan event that focuses attention on the teachers and

students we all want to support. I write this letter with some trepidation that it might be viewed as opportunistic. My motives are quite the opposite, however. FEPS has experienced tremendous growth over the last three years. I want to see the growth continue. It is my hope that all will recognize that FEPS is a nonprofit, run by a volunteer board that provided nearly $50,000 of support to teachers and students last year. Since its inception, FEPS has independently made grants and commitments totaling roughly $250,000. I invite the entire community to come celebrate and support great teachers and great students at the 2011 Taste of Eden Prairie. Come get a true Taste of Eden Prairie on Feb. 26. BY ANGIE TIMMONS • GUEST COLUMNIST It’s that time of year again—what will you pledge to improve this year? How about making a commitment to be more environmentally friendly? Think about the waste you or your family produces and how you can minimize that amount. Recycle more, buy less, reduce waste – there are many ways to reduce your impact. Here are a few ideas: • Pick one new thing to recycle. Choose cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, or items from the bathroom like toothpaste boxes and shampoo bottles. Most of us can recycle more than we think. Read about what items can be recycled on RethinkRecycling.com. • Get your name off of junk mail lists. Each year, the average household in the U.S. receives more than 40 lbs. of unwanted, unsolicited mail. Many find junk mail to be a real pain, but it’s sometimes hard to know who to contact to remove your name from a list. Rethink Recycling has compiled resources for getting your name off lists of major marketers, credit companies, and how to register with the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service. • Pack a no-waste lunch. Another easy “be green, save green” tip: Use a reusable lunch bag and reusable containers instead of plastic bags or disposable containers – and of course, a cloth napkin. • Use a reusable mug and bags. Instead of using a Styrofoam or paper cup from the coffee shop, bring in your own mug. Use a reusable lunch bag and bring a water bottle to refill; you’ll save money and reduce waste. • Look for less packaging and avoid disposables. This one’s big – nearly 30 percent of our trash is packaging. Much of this is card-

Some suggestions for making green New Year’s resolutions board, which can be recycled, but why use the resources on recycling when we didn’t need that packaging in the first place? When you’re at the store, buy in bulk and bring reusable bags to carry your purchases. Choose less-packaged products over individually wrapped items. • Borrow, rent or shop used. Borrow or rent items that friends or neighbors have or that stores offer, then check out buying used before heading to the store for a new item that you’ll only use a couple of times. • Reduce toxins in your home. Instead of using store-bought household cleaners that may harm the environment, consider making your own cleaners that work well and keep kids, pets and the environment safe. • Explore composting. If you don’t already compost, read about it on RethinkRecycling.com. A green New Year’s resolution is a worthy resolution and one you can stick to. Get your friends, family and kids involved — it’s a great way to spread the word about waste and recycling and to help reduce the waste in our landfills. You can also stop by our website, RethinkRecycling.com, to read more no-waste tips, find information on what you can and cannot recycle, read other people’s green resolutions and share your own on our blog. Here’s to a happy, green 2010.

Public Health Pathways: clearing the air in apartments, parks BY BRITTANY MCFADDEN • GUEST COLUMNIST Now appearing in a Hennepin County city or neighborhood near you: tobaccofree parks and smoke-free apartment buildings. As part of Hennepin County’s Statewide Health Improvement Program grant, the Association for Nonsmokers-Minnesota is assisting landlords and city officials in adopting tobacco and smoke-free policies. These policies protect everyone from reducing secondhand smoke exposure to discouraging youth from starting to use tobacco and encouraging tobacco users to quit.

Smoke-free rental housing Since September 2009, 62 apartment buildings in suburban Hennepin County have adopted smoke-free policies for indoor areas including individual apartment units. Building owners are protecting the health of their residents, cutting down on cleaning costs and reducing the risk of fires caused by cigarettes.

GUEST COLUMN Stoneleigh at the Reserve apartments in Plymouth is among those that implemented the “Live Smoke Free program this summer. “Residents love the fact that they are living in a smoke-free property, and the program has generated a lot of positive feedback from our current residents and prospects, said Amy Hesselgrave, Stoneleigh senior business manager. “This is a ‘win–win’ program for everyone involved. As part of the program, apartment buildings receive free signage and other materials that help them advertise that the building is now smoke free. “After many years without a policy, I am so grateful we are now a smokefree building, said Kathy Boesen, Housing and Redevelopment Authority managing director for Plymouth Towne Square. “We have received information, building signs and major support as we proceeded with this venture.

Tobacco-free parks You can also start breathing a little easier in several suburban Hennepin County communities that recently made their park systems tobacco free. For example, Hopkins and Orono adopted policies this past fall prohibiting the use of tobacco in city parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, picnic areas and other recreational venues. As part of the program grant, both communities are receiving tobacco-free signs to post throughout their park areas to remind visitors of the new policy. “As the mother of a toddler and a frequent park user, I am ecstatic that the city of Hopkins has taken this step to protect my family from the dangers of secondhand smoke,â€? said Hopkins resident Kerri Gordon. “It is just another reason that we love living in this community.â€? Tobacco-free park policies impact the health of our communities by: • Protecting park users from secondhand smoke. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no risk-free

level of exposure to secondhand smoke. • Promoting positive, tobacco-free role modeling to youth by keeping coaches, parents and spectators from using tobacco during recreational events. • Reducing toxic tobacco litter left near playgrounds, beaches and picnic areas. Cigarette butts litter the landscape more than any other item in the world. They pollute our waterways and can poison children and animals that ingest them. Ten of 126 Minnesota communities that have tobacco-free policies for their park and recreational areas are in suburban Hennepin County: Champlin, Crystal, Dayton, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Orono and Robbinsdale. For information on tobacco-free parks, visit www.tobaccofreeparks.org. To learn more about smoke-free rentals visit www.mnsmokefreehousing.org. (McFadden is with the Association for Nonsmokers Minnesota and the Hennepin County consulting partner in SHIP tobacco use prevention.)

FROM PAGE 1 Mielke had been the city manager in Hopkins for 14 years. Schroeder has been the Cottage Grove City Administrator since 1997, and before that was administrator for the city of Ramsey. The other candidates’ names will remain private, and the identities of the final three were not made public until they were considered finalists. Around 100 prospects were considered for the position, Greg Albrecht of M&A Executive Search said last fall.

Next steps in the selection process will include background checks, testing and interviews with a panel or panels of citizen leaders. The candidates will also meet with city staff, and the public will have a chance to visit with them at a meetand-greet type open house. The panel of civic leaders is expected to meet the finalists 9 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, during a meeting most likely closed to the public, according to a city representative. The city staff department heads will also meet the candidates Wednesday, which will be closed to the public.

Community members will have a chance to meet the finalists during an open house 3:30-6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, in the Cambria Room at the Community Center, 16700 Valley View Road. Final round of interviews with the City Council, which is open to the public, has been scheduled Thursday, Feb. 3. The time has not yet been determined. No. 1-ranked Eagles overcome travel problems to post win EPHS boys hockey team edges No. 3 Hill-Murray, 2-1 BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS It is difficult for any HillMurray boys hockey opponent to escape with a victory at the Pioneers’ home rink at Aldrich Arena. But Eden Prairie overcame travel problems and dealt HillMurray a rare home defeat. The top-ranked Eagles earned a 2-1 victory over thirdrated Hill-Murray Jan. 6 to improve their overall record to 9-2. According to Eden Prairie head coach Lee Smith, the team’s bus driver made a wrong turn in St. Paul while headed for Aldrich Arena. The driver tried turning around in the parking lot of a nursing home, but the bus got stuck in a snowbank. Eden Prairie’s players and coaching staff decided to make a 20-minute walk down White Bear Avenue to get to the rink in time for the battle of state Class AA powers. The hike didn’t seem to affect the Eagles as they earned a hard-fought victory. Eden Prairie’s Luc Gerdes broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at 7:14 of the third period. Andrew Knudsen and Ben Boldenow were credited with assists. Kyle Rau put the Eagles ahead 1-0 at 11:37 of the second period, but Hill-Murray scored the tying goal at 5:22 of the third period. “We went into an arena with plenty of tradition and beat a strong Hill-Murray team,” said Smith. “The guys showed a lot of jump and we got excellent goaltending.”

Eden Prairie’s David Rath (25) collides with Edina’s Anthony Walsh (24) during the Eagles’ 3-2 overtime loss in the Edina Holiday Classic. Watching the Edina player take a tumble were Eden Prairie’s Joe Kerker (15) and goalie Andrew Ford. The No. 1-ranked Eagles were 9-2 overall after defeating second-rated Hill-Murray 2-1 Jan. 6. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer) Eden Prairie senior goalie Andrew Ford made 26 saves to preserve the victory. Smith said he is proud of the way Eden Prairie has played through a demanding first-half schedule. “I would have to give our squad a B-plus or A-minus grade at midseason,” said

Smith. “We played 10 of our last 11 games on the road against good teams. “The guys have picked each other up. I am proud of our team’s leadership.” The Eagle coach also isn’t spending too much time dwelling on his team’s No. 1 ranking.

“I am satisfied with our team’s play, but our performances have been far from perfect,” said Smith. “We must keep improving because we will be playing in a challenging Section 6AA tournament against such quality teams as Wayzata, Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Minnetonka.”

Eden Prairie will head north to play Duluth East at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. Then the Eagles host Holy Angels at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. Kyle Rau is Eden Prairie’s leading scorer with 27 points. Gerdes ranks second with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.

Floor hockey team deep in returning talent Top scorers back for Flyers squad BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Bloomington Kennedy’s Dan Schmitz clears the puck during state adapted floor hockey action last season. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer)

There is an abundance of talent returning for the South Suburban Flyers adapted floor hockey team. The Flyers compete in the Physically Impaired (PI) Division. Squad members are student-athletes in grades 7-12 from Eden Prairie, Edina, Bloomington and Richfield. The South Suburban Flyers were scheduled to open the season in the Team 25 Adapted Floor Hockey Invitational Tournament Jan. 7-8 at Rochester Century High School. This year’s captains are Eden Prairie seniors Robert Doyle and Sam Rasmussen. Flyers’ junior players are Rachel Rosenthal and Chris Reichel from Edina, Nick Nieson and Mark McDaniel from Eden Prairie, Karen Kriedler of Richfield and Jessi Bean of Bloomington Jefferson. The Flyers also hope to get contributions from sophomores Alex Furber (Jefferson) and DeQuan Williams (Kennedy).

South Suburban ninth-grade players are Dan Schmitz (Kennedy) and Callie Johnson (Eden Prairie). Edina’s Jackson Lowe and Eden Prairie’s Jake Yancy are eighth-grade members of the team. The team also has four seventh graders, all from Edina – Danny Moffert, Patrick Moffatt, Andrew Spartz and Alexei Dickinson. “I am very excited about our team,” said Flyers head coach Dan Slinden. “Kriedler is back after leading us in scoring last season with 45 goals. “Nieson was tops in assists with 19 and Doyle added 13 goals and 18 assists. Those three players make up our first line and I expect big numbers from that group.” Furber is expected to be the Flyers’ starting goaltender, according to Slinden. Providing defensive support are Schmitz and Reichel. South Suburban will count heavily on other returning letter-winners such as Bean, Rosenthal, McDaniel, Rasmussen, Lowe and Yancy. The South Suburban Flyers will travel to Rosemount to play Dakota United at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13.

SHORTS Leddy aids U.S. team Eden Prairie High School graduate Nick Leddy was a member of the USA hockey team that won the bronze medal in the World Junior Championships last week in Buffalo, N.Y. Leddy, a defenseman, was credited with one assist during the U.S. team’s 42 victory over Switzerland in the thirdplace game Jan. 5. He was one of five Minnesotans on the U.S. team. Leddy is a member of the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Leddy earned All-State and Mr. Hockey honors during his prep career at Eden Prairie. Leddy went on to play at the University of Minnesota before turning pro.

Sorensen aids Badgers University of Wisconsin senior linebacker Blake Sorensen of Eden Prairie started for the Badgers in their 21-19 loss to Texas Christian University in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif. The Badgers finished 11-2.

McNaul plays for NU Northwestern University junior linebacker Bryce McNaul was a member of the Wildcats’ football team that lost 45-38 to Texas Tech in the Ticket Bowl Jan. 1 in Dallas, Tex. McNaul, an Eden Prairie

High School graduate, finished the season with 62 tackles, fifth most on the team. He had one sack and one forced fumble during his junior season.

Haake plays in Germany Eden Prairie native and former Bemidji State University basketball player Seth Haake is playing professionally in Germany. Haake signed with a professional organization in Germany called Munchen Basket. He was scheduled to play his first pro game Jan. 8. The Munchen Basket squad competes in the third tier of the organization against other teams in Germany. He is the only American on the team. Haake played for BSU from 2006-10. Haake averaged 18.6 points per game as a senior and finished with 1,202 career points.

Skjefte, Thonvold sign Eden Prairie High School senior second baseman Tony Skjefte and pitcher Lance Thonvold have signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Minnesota on baseball scholarships next fall. Skjefte was one the leading hitters on Eden Prairie’s state championship team last spring. Thonvold was one of the top pitchers in the Lake Conference and excelled in a relief role.

Applying the pressure Benilde-St. Margaret’s boys hockey player Dan Labosky attempts to poke the puck past a Minnetonka goaltender during a 3-2 win earlier this season. Labosky had one goal and four assists to spark the Red Knights to a 10-1 victory over Robbinsdale Cooper Jan. 4. The win boosted BSM’s record to 9-1. Grant Besse scored three goals against Cooper and Jake Horton scored twice. Other scorers were Pat Steinhauser, Christian Horn, T.J. Moore and Tyler Ellegard. (Photo courtesy of Tom Dahlin)
