oe Moravec angled the rear wheels of his machine to make the gigantic blower dig into the mounds of snow that lined the taxiway at Flying Cloud Airport. On Jan. 15 he was piloting “the blower,” as it is called. The yellow rig isn’t very long, but it rides high like a semi, only with a massive red blade for a bumper — a larger version of blowers that snow-clearing commoners use on driveways.

Moravec parked at the corner of a taxiway facing a snow mound. He adjusted another lever or two. He had already called into the control tower to make sure his position would be safe. “So, here we go,” he said. “Now it’ll get loud.” The cabin shook when the blade started. PLOWS: TO PAGE 15

With a little over a week into his first legislative session, freshmen Republican Rep. Kirk Stensrud of District 42A (covering parts of Minnetonka and Eden Prairie) said the housekeeping details at his office in the capitol are Kirk Stensrud done. His computer and phone are set up. His legislative assistant has been assigned. “It seems to be we’re all ready and open for business,” he said. In December, after his narrow electoral victory over incumbent Maria Ruud, Stensrud said he was already getting a lot of e-mails and contact from groups and individuals he hadn’t heard from during the campaign. He was anxious to get started, he said, and he was hoping to get on the committees he preferred. Well, it’s started, and he did. Stensrud has been assigned to three committees, Jobs and Economic Development Finance, State Government Finance and Commerce and Regulatory Reform. “I’m pleased,” he said. “It kind of fits in with where I’ve been and what I campaigned on.” Stensrud was born and raised in Bloomington and now lives in Eden Prairie STENSRUD: TO PAGE 15

PAID ADVERISEMENT My wife and I have been Eden Prairie residents since 1989. We have four children, our youngest CJ and Emily are still in high school. On Dec. 7th we attended the A&M Partnership meeting at Chaska High School and I was shocked at what I saw in the hallways. There were posters promoting GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) groups. These I found out are after hours clubs that are student led but school supported through the House Secretary's and student counselors. On doing a little research, I found that GLBT, GSA and GLSEN (large national organizations) have been pressuring school officials to integrate homosexual education into school curricula. These organizations recommend promoting homosexuality as normal and equally as valid a lifestyle as heterosexuality. They condemn all efforts to provide treatment to gender confused students, advocating instead the creation of student groups that affirm homosexual attractions and behaviors. The overwhelming scientific data shows most youth with homosexual attraction experienced a troubled upbringing or a painful trauma, including sexual abuse, and are in need of therapy, not affirmation of a "gay identity". There is no evidence that pro-homosexual programs such as in school student clubs ease the health risks or emotional disorders suffered by homosexuals. The homosexual Life Style, especially for males carries grave health risks. According to research by Dr. E.L. Goldman, 30% of currently twenty-year -old gay men will be HIV positive or dead of Aids by the age of thirty. Our public schools with our tax dollars are embracing this perverted "life style", in truth this is a "death style". Good heavens, schools would never facilitate a smoking club, skydiving or pistol shooting club. So why are the schools being activists for the homosexual movement anyway? The schools responsibility is to provide a safe environment for responsible/respectful self-expression for all students. It is not the schools role to diagnose and attempt to treat any students medical condition and certainly not the schools role to "affirm" a students perceived personal sexual orientation. I am personally offended that our schools are more concerned with being "cultural change agents" than educating our children to become productive good citizens. If your child's school insists on promoting homosexuality, pay close attention to how it handles religious topics, and if the school presents pro-gay theology to the exclusion of other beliefs, Its likely violating the U.S. Constitution. You have every right to pressure the school to include other perspectives like "Abstinence & Marriage Education Partnership" @ www.ampartnership.org . The bottom line is taxpaying parents and students have a right and a responsibility to request that their view points be represented in their own local schools. Parents should never surrender ground to outside gay activist/anti-family groups.

City staff offers 20-40-15 energy efficiency update Writers leaving BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS While much of the emphasis the past few months has been keeping Eden Prairie in the black, a movement to keep it green is also under way. The city is closing in on the final projects of its 20-40-15 energy efficiency initiative. The initiative that began December 2006 aims for a 20 percent energy efficiency improvement in all city buildings and a 40 percent increase in its city vehicles’ fuel efficiency by 2015. Public Works Superintendent Cliff Cracauer said the city is on track for the 40 percent increase in its fleet’s fuel efficiency. By purchasing smaller vehicles for a variety of city services, switching some vehicles to diesel engines and making other upgrades that are more fuel and cost efficient, the city has already increased fuel efficiency by 20 percent in several areas through 2009, according to Cracauer. Fleet changes made since 2005, according to Cracauer: • Purchasing Dodge Charger squad cars with a Hemi engine that can reduce power when idling • Switching from half-ton and threequarter-ton trucks to crossover vehicles and smaller vans • Putting diesel engines in some plow trucks (yielding 50-60 percent better fuel efficiency) • Using GPS systems to help create the most efficient travel and plowing routes. With all the snow this Minnesota winter, city staff has used twice as much fuel for plowing in December than it normally does, according to Cracauer. Fuel prices are also expected to rise later this year, a crunch that will be tough for anyone to avoid. “I think everyone’s kind of in that boat now in the Twin Cities,” he said. Cracauer said this year probably won’t look good for fuel economy, but over 15 years, he thinks things will average out.

“So, at the end of 2015, we should have a report that says we make 40 percent,” Cracauer said. “That’s our goal.”

Buildings efficiency As for the energy efficiency in city buildings, Facility manager Paul Sticha said as of October 2010, the city is halfway toward its goal of a 20 percent increase in energy efficiency. Energy consumption in city buildings has decreased by 8.4 percent, which about 10 percent efficiency improvement. “It’s pretty well on pace with what we expected,” Sticha said. The project has had three phases, with the third expected to finish by the end of this year, Sticha said. Many of the changes applied to all city buildings, with a focus on the ten largest city facilities, Sticha said. Those buildings include City Hall, the community center, water plant, three fire stations, the senior center, maintenance facility, a storage facility and the Den Road liquor store. Phase 1 included various lighting improvements, a new electric generator and operational efficiencies. Phase 2 included further lighting improvements, water treatment plant changes and other utility improvements. The first two phases have cost around $750,000 each, paid for through capital improvement funds, not through taxpayer dollars, Sticha said. “The beauty of the program is the zero-dollar tax impact,” Sticha said. The city is guaranteed to save $118,000 in annual utility and operational costs (compared to 2005) for phase 1 and phase 2 projects, so the $1.6 million cost for those projects will be paid off in less than 14 years, according to Sticha. Those annual savings are guaranteed by McKinstry, a company that

FUNERAL CHAPELS, CEMETERIES, AND CREMATION SERVICES

specializes in making building more energy efficient. Phase 3 projects cost approximately $723,000 with $39,000 in guaranteed annual energy savings, Sticha said, for a payoff period of approximately 19 years. The projects have thoroughly identified the city’s inefficiencies. “I would say by and large, when phase three is done, there will be very little opportunity for additional savings. … I’m pretty comfortable that we’ll be done by summer with entire phase three,” he said. The main phase three projects in 2011 include making the Community Center ice rink’s dehumidifier more energy efficient, installing an energy management system at City Center and installing LED lights in park shelters and at the Eden Prairie Liquor Store on Den Road. When the program began in 2006, Sticha had heard of other cities renovating particular buildings or projects to improve energy efficiency, but nothing quite like Eden Prairie’s initiative. “Nobody was trying to encompass every single building on such a large scale,” Sticha said. The program was part of capital improvement projects that Nancy TyraLukens encouraged during her first tenure as mayor. Sticha had identified $500,000 in energy savings when he came to the city in 2004, he said, but in 2005, Tyra-Lukens encouraged City Manager Scott Neal to move the projects up the list of capital improvements. Tyra-Lukens said she is impressed with the progress so far. Sticha said the city also looked at other options such as wind, solar and green roofs, but at the time, the life of the equipment was shorter than the time it would take to recoup costs. their ink on First Pages classes BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina resident Inna Hays believes everyone has a story worth telling. “You’re on a journey, and you have a story to tell, whether you realize it or not,” she said. Hays recently attended a First Pages writing lab at the Edina library to learn how to tell her personal story better. Throughout Hennepin County, writers like Hays have the chance to hone their skills through free 60-minute labs in January, with one coming up shortly in Eden Prairie. First Pages is a program presented by Hennepin County Libraries and The Loft Literary Center. It allows people interested in writing to attend labs on specific, writing-related topics. This month’s topics range from memoirs to children’s literature to finding time to write. The “teaching artists” from The Loft who lead each session are experienced professionals who know how to guide others through the writing process. They are well respected in the Minnesota literary community, and many have won awards for their writing. “The instructors have all been wonderful, enthusiastic and encouraging to participants,” said Maureen Millia Smith, a librarian at the Edina library. They are also well-qualified. “All of the teaching artists possess a combination of publication credits and teaching credentials,” said Kelly Ceynowa, associate education director at The Loft. Confessions of a thrift store junkie: Dress for less When I first met my wife nearly five years ago, she told me that she never paid more than $5 for a top and $10 for pants. At the time, I didn’t believe her, but with a little practice, I’ve been able to give her a run for her money. We are both thrift store junkies, and after a few years of making the rounds, I thought I would dish out some of what I’ve learned in the process of looking decent on the cheap. With a little work, it’s possible to save your green and not skimp on quality. • Every Tuesday, Goodwill has a different color tag that sells for $1.49. It depends which week it is, but if you plan ahead, you can often get deals on a variety of items, especially clothing. Plus, big-name companies often donate their unsold wares to Goodwill, so you can find new clothing with the tags on it for far less than retail. • Learn how to use shoe polish. I once found a $130 pair of Cole Haan shoes in the boot section at Arc Value Village in Richfield for $2. Whomever had the shoes before got road salt on them, which is apparently an offense which requires donation to a local charity. Their loss, my gain.

JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM Dakota County Community Editor

• Dry cleaning too expensive? I’ve had some decent luck with Dryel, a home dry cleaning kit. It works well enough for regular cleaning. This allows me to clean and dewrinkle any expensive dress pants I find at thrift stories. It’s a much cheaper way to look nice than buying the pants new. Also, if you learn how to do your own hemming, you can stretch that dollar even farther by expanding your selection of options. • If you have a pair of dress shoes that are beginning to wear out, take them to a local shoe repair place. It’s cheaper than buying a new pair, and they are already broken in when you get them back. Plus, you will be supporting a local business. • Cargo pants can make excellent shorts, come summer. Learning how to sew hems has kept me from having to buy new shorts for the past several years. Instead, I simply buy new (for me) cargo pants when the weather starts getting cold again.

CORRECTION The “Final Elementary Schools map, start times released” article in the Jan. 13 Sun-Current had incorrect elementary school enrollment information. Cedar Ridge will not have 80 percent of its current students enrolling in Cedar Ridge under the final elementary school boundary map.

Approximately 411 Cedar Ridge students will be transitioning to a new school under the final map, and approximately 319 Forest Hills students will be transitioning to a new school under the map, according to School District estimates. The Sun-Current regrets the error.

• A toothbrush and a bit of Oxyclean mixed with dish soap can get many stains about of clothes that a simple washing can’t. Bleach pens are also good for getting small stains off of white garments like dress shirts. As someone who deals with sticky toddler hands on a regular basis, I’ve found the toothbrushOxyclean combination to be invaluable. • UNIQUE thrift store in Burnsville has a cool VIP membership club that gives you a 25 percent off discount on Fridays, as well as e-mail notification about upcoming 50 percent off sales. Judging from my own experience, the 50 percent off days can be crowded and hectic, but if you are willing to deal with the mob, you can score some pretty good deals. • Learn how to fix buttons, and teach your kids, too. It’s a simple way to keep a pair of pants in good repair. You’d be amazed how many pairs of pants I see on the racks of local

thrift stores that lack buttons. If the owner had taken the time to repair them, they’d still have an otherwise-decent pair of pants. • If you are really ambitious, learn how to fit your own dress shirts. Can your local tailor do it better? Oh, yes. But there’s something about finding a thrift store shirt and custom fitting it that makes a good find even better. Instructions on how to do this are widely available on the Internet for those brave enough to try. • Church sales are a good place to find basic clothing items, and most have some form of a “bag sale” to clear out leftover items at the end of a weekend sale. I’ve found some pretty good dress shirts this way. These sales usually have a lot of kids stuff, too. It’s especially important these days to make every dollar go as far as it can. I hope that the lessons learned from my own thrift addiction can help you do the same. Happy hunting!

More than 5,000 high school seniors applied from around the nation, and only one was chosen from Minnesota to participate in “YoungArts Week,” sponsored by the Visit National Foundation for minnlocal.com the Advancement of the for videos, more Arts Jan. 10-15 in Miami, photos and daily Fla. news updates Minnetonka High School senior Ryan McCartan was one of only 23 theater performers who will join a total of 148 students from around the country in nine artistic disciplines in a week of invaluable opportunity. Along with being awarded scholarships for being selected a finalist, the week included master classes taught by top professionals in the business, workshops, performances, exhibitions and interdisciplinary activities. The students also had the opportunity to win additional scholarships up to $10,000. And McCartan couldn’t be more thrilled. “I’m ready to represent,” McCartan said in an interview before leaving. “I’m really excited and know there are so many talented kids here … to be able to represent Minnesota is something I’m very proud of.” McCartan was selected by sending in a video of him singing a song and performing a monologue, which he performed live in front of audiences in professional venues. “The chance to go to Miami is so valuable,” said Artistic Director for the MHS theater department Kent Knutson. “It’s just great they get an opportunity and there are kids from all over the country from different walks from life.” Getting involved with theater at an early age from watching his sister perform, McCartan played his first role at eight-years-old, took his passion of the love of telling a story and ran with it. As well as performing for the high school’s theater productions, McCartan has also landed in many performances, including a lead role, at a Guthrie

Theater production in downtown Minneapolis, performed with many local theater companies and has even had a role in a nationally broadcast Subway commercial. McCartan has also earned four consecutive “Outstanding Actor Awards” from the Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight Musical Theatre Awards, which is the equivalent of a high school athlete earning MVP four times during four consecutive state championships. All his previous experiences and success have led to this opportunity. McCartan said he expects to learn a lot all the while hoping that it might lead to future connections. “This experience gets a lot of kids’ names out,” he said. “People who are really passionate about the work that they do are kind of on the map now, which is so cool for us.” For some who have had McCartan as a student, they aren’t surprised. “He has sort of an energy about him,” said McCartan’s 10th grade English teacher Sonia Labs. “As much as he has going on around him all the time, he is grounded and knows what he needs to do.” Even with all his success, McCartan understands the road to where he is wasn’t easy. “Theater is so competitive, you’re competing with so many other people you get more noes than you do yeses,” he said. “So it’s hard to stay confident and motivated, but if you can it’s always worth it in the end.” Even being deeply involved in theater, McCarton has been able to excel in his studies. Finding that balance is what educators know is important to help facilitate success in all aspects of life. “As educators, we try to figure out what they’re good at and steer them towards new experiences they might not try,” said former and current English teacher Sonja Saunders. In addition to the experience and additional scholarships, McCartan had the chance to be named a Gold or Silver winner for a chance to travel to New York to become a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Ryan McCartan is son of Eden Prairie High School Principal Conn McCartan.

den, pain and shame that you carry can be given over to the God who loves you and gave Himself for you on the cross! Secondly, on this, the thirty-eighth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I want to encourage people again to fight for life. We believe in the sanctity of life because the Bible teaches that the key person at work while humans are being fashioned in the womb is God. Theologically, mothers are not the main nurturers and fashioners during the time of gestation – God is. Psalm 139:13 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Moreover, Proverbs 24:11 says we are to fight for life and, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.” Years ago, I found out that I was the outcome of a teenage pregnancy. And although I have never met my biological mother, I am so grateful to her that she chose to preserve my life rather than take it. Now I certainly don’t purport to be anyone or anything special, but by choosing life over death, my biological mother set in motion a series of blessed scenarios; my adoptive parents got to raise a son, my wife got to have a husband, my children got to have a father and Grace Church got to have a pastor. All because one young girl, whom I’ve never met, was willing to choose hope over despair and life over death.

Thirty-eight years ago on Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the infamous Roe v. Wade case to legalize abortion in our country. As I was reflecting on the ramifications of abortion and preparing to write this article, I ran across a recent statement in the Associated Press from an abortion advocate who made this comment: “Since abortion was legalized nationwide in 1973, it has become one of the most common surgical procedures in our nation.” After reading this assessment I brokenheartedly thought to myself how painfully tragic it is that in our country abortion could be characterized as “one of the nation’s most common surgical procedures.” There is nothing pedestrian about abortion. Accordingly, a few years ago I pastored a church in Florida that had an Alternative Pregnancy Center on its church campus. The mission of the ministry was to counsel women and their boyfriends or spouses to choose life by either keeping the baby or placing the baby up for adoption. The director, Kim LaRue, who had herself undergone an abortion in her early 20s, recounted very vividly for me the conversation she had with the doctor who performed her abortion. He looked her dead in the eye and said “it will all be over in a few minutes.” Now in her 40s, Kim informed me some 20 years later, “That man told me the greatest lie I have ever been told – the procedure was over in 10 minutes but that decision and experience will never be over for me.” Today, I want to say the Bible offers to those women who have had abortions, and to the fathers who may have agreed to it, and to the grandfathers and grandmothers who may have demanded it; real and lasting forgiveness, mercy, hope and restoration in Jesus Christ. DUCATIONAL XCELLENCE

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future”

Admission information for higher education institutions Community and Technical College Requirements The state's community and technical colleges have an open admissions policy. This means: • You can enroll if you have a high school diploma or a GED. Even without those, you may be admitted if you demonstrate potential for success in college. • No standardized tests are required for admission to the two-year state col-

leges, and your high school grades and class rank are not considered. • After you have been admitted, you will be required to take a test for placement in the appropriate courses based on your reading, writing and mathematics skills. • You are more likely to do well on the placement test if you complete a "college prep" curriculum in high school, including four years of English and three years of mathematics, science and social studies. If you did not, or if you had minimum passing scores on the Minnesota Basic Standards test, you may not be admit-

ted to certain programs. Most likely, you will have to take developmental or remedial courses that will not count toward a degree before you can take college-level courses.

State University Requirements The seven state universities generally will accept you if you can answer yes to at least one of these questions: • Did you graduate in the top half of your high school class?

• Did you score 21 or higher on the ACT standardized test? • Did you receive a combined score of 1,000 or higher on the SAT standardized test? Admission to some of the seven state universities may require meeting slightly different requirements. Check with the university admissions office for details. Even if you don't meet minimum requirements, you may be considered for admission under special provisions.

Choosing a college

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future”

Admissions From Previous Page

It's never too early to start planning for college. There are many different types of colleges, so you need to think about what programs you are interested in, do some research and visit campuses to see which type fits best with your personality, budget and career plans.

Which type of college is right for you? • Technical colleges are two-year state colleges that teach knowledge and skills leading to specific careers. You can complete a program in two years or less and be ready for a job. • Community colleges are two-year

colleges that enable you to start on a bachelor's degree. You can take your first two years at a community college, then transfer to a four-year university to finish. Or you can take a career program leading directly to a job. • Combined community and technical colleges enable you to start on a bachelor's degree and transfer after two years, or you can enroll in a technical program to learn skills that lead directly to a career. • State universities are four-year institutions offering bachelor's, master's and advanced degrees. Most offer on-campus housing and a full range of student activities. Info: mnscu.edu (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system).

Apply early for the best chance at being admitted. Some universities and programs do not have room for all qualified applicants. For admission to a state university, you also should have completed these courses in high school: • Four years of English, including composition, literature and speech • Three years of math, including two years of algebra, one of which is intermediate or advanced algebra, and one year of geometry • Three years of science, including one year each of a biological and a physical science, all with significant laboratory experience

• Three years of social studies, including one year each of geography and U.S. History • Two years of a single world language, including non-English native languages and American Sign Language • One year of arts (visual arts and the performing arts of theater, music, dance and media arts)

Online Learning You can take individual courses or complete an entire program online. Visit www.minnesotaonline.org to search for online programs and courses offered at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Info: mnscu.edu (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system).

It rocked when it hit the snow mound. It sounded like a jet engine. There’s been so much snow in the area lately that Moravec’s job this day was to clear the edges of the taxiway to make room for more snow. He said five more inches was possible by Wednesday. According to his partner Merle Marschall, who was manning the more familiar snowplow, the three-man crew hadn’t been home since 6 a.m. the previous day. “Little catnaps,” Marschall said while guiding the plow toward the snow. “Well deserved, too.” He’s been with the Metropolitan Airports Commission for 25 years, he said, with 15 at Flying Cloud Airport. The crew begins work as soon as snow starts falling. If the entire airport is covered in snow, it takes 6-7 hours to clear every flake. “In my 25 years, I have never – I have never worked this much. It’s every other day,” Marschall said. He paused. “My wife still loves me.” December left the area with 34 inches of snow, breaking a 1969 record, according to the National Weather Service, and each day it seems more snow falls. Lately, its been falling a few inches at a time, Marschall said. Alberta Clippers. And, it’s been dry snow, so it stacks up quickly. “Each snow is a little different,” he said. “We don’t want to talk about rain or freezing rain because that is stress.” While Marschall worked about the taxiway, senior airport maintenance worker Kurt Schumann’s job for the early afternoon was brushing off the last layer of snow from a runway with a large rotating broom at the end of a tractor. “That is the best thing our company ever got,” Marschall said, pointing out to Schumann making passes on the runway. “It improves braking 100 percent.” A plane can land if there’s a thin layer of snow on the runway, he said, but the broom reduces the need for using costly sand on the runway. Pilots appreciate it. The best thing he can hear from a pilot about a runway’s condition after snowfall is that it’s “braking action good,” said Marschall, who’s been a pilot since 1999. The braking action classification is used by pilots and air traffic controllers to identify the status of a runway during inclement weather. A classification of good is the best rating, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Or, it means a large, mechanical broom on a tractor has swept the runway. It also means the Flying Cloud Airports’ threeman maintenance crew has done a good job, one they all seem to take pride in. “Braking action good,” Marschall said. “You’ll get us all choked up.”

with his wife Wendy. They have two children in college and one attending Minnetonka High School. He has experience in small business. In 2001 he gave up his career in medical device sales, bought a Fish Window Cleaning franchise and set up shop in Edina. He had seen a lot of fluctuations in the medical device field, and he was ready to run his own business. “I just looked at what do I have to offer any industry,” Stensrud said before the session began. “Surprisingly, if you’re open and honest with people and show up on time, that’s a good measure for success.” Had he not gone into business for himself, he would not have made a run for the legislature, he said. That experience also gave him insight into the economic situation. “When it comes to having an appreciation for where our economy is, I know how some of our customers have cut back,” Stensrud said. He got involved in politics after attending a caucus with his neighbor more than six years ago, he said. Before deciding to run himself, he had asked others if they would be interested in running for office. With no one interested, he kicked around the idea of running. He talked to Sen. David Hann of Eden Prairie and local GOP leaders before deciding to throw his hat in the ring. After all, he was looking for someone who thought like he did, he said. Now, he’s one of 33 freshmen GOP representatives in the legislature, and he thinks the lot of them will have the same message this session, with a focus on jobs and controlled spending without unnecessary tax increases. “Anything not related to those should take a back seat for now,” he said. With his committee assignments and his colleagues proposing a bill that would look at state revenue before prioritizing spending, things are off to a good start. “I think it’s really what all of us seem to be campaigning on,” he said. “We need to do the best we can with the resources we have.” Info: rep.kirk.stensrud@house. mn.

By Saturday afternoon, clearing snow from a taxiway to make room for more snow was the job. The plow smoothens the bottom of the pavement so the blower can avoid any pitfalls while digging into the mounds of snow that need to be edged off the taxiway.

Joe Moravec uses the blower to carve out mounds of snow to make room for more snow along the taxiway’s edge.

Kurt Schumann takes the last layer of snow off a Flying Cloud Runway. The broom is supposed to improve a plane’s breaking action and avoid using sand to combat slick runways. (Photos by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers)

High-ranked Eagles add to win totals EP girls are ranked second, boys team is rated fourth Eden Prairie High School basketball programs are flourishing with success again this winter season. Both squads will be in action Saturday, Jan. 22. The Eagle boys team will meet St. Cloud Apollo at 2:15 p.m. at Minnetonka High School. Eden Prairie will travel to Maranatha Academy for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Jan. 25. Eden Prairie’s winning girls basketball team will be on display at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, when it plays host Providence Academy at 2 p.m.

Jackie Johnson and Shayne Mullaney contributed 14 and 12 points respectively. Cassie Saxton, Taylor Uhl and Morgan Van Riper-Rose chipped in with seven points each. Other Eagle scorers were Jack Klukas (9), Conner Nord (7), Blake Wragge (5), Sander Mohn (4) and Jacob Foss (2). Edina High’s boys swimming and diving team went into its Jan. 14 meet with Eden Prairie one place behind the Eagles in the state rankings. Following Edina’s 103-80 win, the pollsters may have to elevate the Hornets from last week’s third-place perch. “Eden Prairie defeated us in a couple of invitational meets,” said Edina head coach Art Downey. “I’m not surprised we won the meet, but I am surprised by the margin. Many of our guys rose to the occasion, not just the top guys in the lineup, but a lot of guys down the line, also.” Downey put his top four swimmers in the 200-yard medley relay, and the result was a first-place finish. Michael Gratz, Max Cartwright, Mitch Lentz and Tim Satterthwaite swam a time of 1 minute, 36.84 seconds. Cartwright added a win in the next event, the 200 freestyle, in 1:47.68. Jonathan Lieberman and Evan Griffith of Eden Prairie placed second and third. As expected, Eden Prairie star Maverick Hovey won the 200 individual medley in 2:01.51. Lentz of Edina was second and Mathew Harris of EP was third. In the 50 freestyle, the top three finishers were Satterthwaite of Edina, Michael Solfelt of Eden Prairie and Buzz Rehnberg of Edina.

The top three in diving were Sam Linden of Edina, Connor Flattum of Eden Prairie and Isaiah Small of Edina. Bryce Boston of Eden Prairie won the 100 butterfly with teammate Jenia Foster placing second and Edina’s Erik Rehnberg placing third. Edina’s Gratz touched out Hovey to win the 100 freestyle. Cartwright gave Edina first place in the 500 freestyle, but EP responded with a 23-4 finish from Lieberman, Griffith and Michael Hoblit. Edina won the 200 free relay with Lentz, Will Braun, Buzz Rehnberg and Tim Satterthwaite finishing in 1:30.08. Gratz gave Edina first-place points in the 100 backstroke while EP’s Boston and Jackson Lindell were second and third. Lentz and Erik Rehnberg gave Edina a 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke. Edina closed with a win from Tim Satterthwaite, Buzz Rehnberg, Cartwright and Gratz in the 400 freestyle relay. “We’re fortunate to have a strong nucleus at the top of our lineup,” said Downey, referring to Cartwright, Gratz, Lentz and Tim Satterthwaite. Next for the Hornets is a test of their depth. They will swim against top-ranked Minnetonka and Eden Prairie among others in the Section 6AA True Team meet Saturday, Jan. 22, at Art Downey Aquatic Center. “We could finish anywhere in the top three,” said Downey. “Our guys always go after the True Team championship, but the big deal for us is always the state high school league meet. True Team is a nice interlude in the middle of the season.”

SHORTS Youth baseball sign-up Eden Prairie Baseball Association (EPBA) is conducting registration for the 2011 season. Online registrations are
