The Eden Prairie School Board has approved a request for specific data and answers from the school district administration regarding the K-6 from K-4 elementary school transition. Since the School Board approved the K-6 model on Feb. 23, the school district has formed task forces and moved toward a transition that would begin next year. As part of that process, a new elementary school boundary map was released in early October that would change where more than 1,000 students attend school. The release of the boundary map has led to questions and criticism about the K-6 planning process and how the boundary map was formed. Originally, Superintendent Melissa Krull was to make the final decision about new elementary school boundaries sometime in November.

Eden Prairie Schools superintendent Melissa Krull received high marks for her efforts to better test scores and for maintaining the dis- Melissa Krull trict’s financial stability. However, the school board in a summary statement released Nov. 23 asks for better communication between the superintendent, the board and the community. “Areas of focus the Board wishes to emphasize include collaboration with the Board, continued analysis and innovation of instructional programs, and more effective communication of key messages and major organizational changes with stakeholders,” the statement reads. Five closed-door meetings were held to complete the review.

Fighting cabin fever in EP Registration for city winter activities still available BY PATRICK LOCH • SUN NEWSPAPERS Three times a year, the Eden Prairie Parks and Recreation Department seasonal brochure is mailed to residents. There are hundreds of programs to choose from in the winter, fall and the spring and summer guides. Registration began Nov. 30 for winter activities. “We do a lot, everything from preschool [classes] all the way up to four-day trips [for adults],” said Stan Tekiela, director of Eden Prairie’s Outdoor Center. Combined with the Art, Senior and Community Centers, the Outdoor Center is one of four locations that create a variety of programs for residents. “Parks and Recreation is a city department. We coordinate activities at all centers,” said administrative assistant Brenda Uting. “[We provide for] a slightly different clientele at each location.” WINTER: TO PAGE 3

Winter FROM PAGE 2 The active and fit should seek out the Community Center, which includes a fitness center. Artists are offered open studio time at the Art Center, in addition to the many other classes listed in the brochure. For the elderly, activities are coordinated at the Senior Center, such as card games and health and wellness classes. For nature lovers, environmental education and outdoor recreation is administered at the Outdoor Center. “We’re one of four centers, open fulltime and year-round,” said Tekiela. “There’s a mission of nature education, that’s the thread that goes through all of these programs.” While there are a few community events that are free, the Parks and Recreation coordinators strived to provide many events at a lower cost. “Our preschool classes run Tuesday to Friday,” said Tekiela. “At $6 per program, parents can just walk in, but we prefer they register.” He said the typically hour-and-a-half programs (not considered daycare programs) are a great way to occupy a child’s time while learning about the natural environment. During holiday breaks, some programs run all day. “One program, ‘Giving a Gift,’ we help the kids to make a gift,” said Tekiela. “Meanwhile, the parents can go shopping.”

Because the programs are created by Tekiela and his staff, event coordination isn’t solely focused on the younger public. Located on Staring Lake and crisscrossed with walking paths, there are several activities for people of all ages to enjoy. He mentioned ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fly tying, to name a few. Also available are birding excursions up north and a four-day trip to Nebraska to watch the migration of a half-million sand hill cranes. “Winter is a great time of year for naturalists,” said Tekiela. “It’s Minnesota, you either go out, hibernate or migrate,” said naturalist Pauline Bold, who has been with the Outdoor Center for 12 years. The Outdoor Center’s greatest asset, the center itself, has helped create an adventure-like feel, especially for the kids. “They feel like they’re at a destination,” said Bold. Built in 1935, moved to its current location in 1945, the building was recently restored and now showcases many glass tanks full of snakes, lizards, turtles, fish and even a chicken. And while the interior is well-stocked with other learning-aid devices, the focus has always been on the outdoors. “I just like getting [the kids] outside,” said Bold. “Nowadays, that doesn’t happen a whole lot.” For complete information on all programs offered by the Parks and Recreation Department, including Saturday morning birthday parties hosted at all locations, check out their online brochure. Give to the Max Day raises more than $10 million A chunk of it for Eden Prairie organizations BY PATRICK LOCH • SUN NEWSPAPERS In only its second year, the GiveMN organization has helped thousands of Minnesota nonprofits raise millions of dollars in a single day. On Nov. 16 — Give to the Max Day — online donations were accepted in an engaging way for people to support their favorite causes. “GiveMN is an organization that helps other charities get money,” said executive director Michael Frischkorn, Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools. “This year, we raised $9,500.” “We definitely participated,” said Janet Palmer, operation’s manager of the Eden Prairie-based food shelf People Reaching Out to Other People. “It was a very successful day for us. We took in $2,800”

While much was made about Give to the Max Day, GiveMN will continue to facilitate donations throughout the year by providing a convenient, safe and efficient way to donate money. “It looks seemless,” said Palmer. “They did it for free until October, now they provide the service at a low cost.” “Usually people donate by credit card, and they pay a credit card fee,” said Frischkorn. “GiveMN charges a much smaller percentage.” However, this year the event raised about $4 million less than last year. Because GiveMN didn’t offer matching funds in 2010, the incentive to participate in Give to the Max Day was less. “The perception was, if I give on this day, it helped that much more,” said Palmer. Originally in 2009, GiveMN promised 50 cents on the dollar for the first

Do you or someone you know suffer from

million raised on their Web site. Because so much money was donated, the actual match was watered down. “It was so successful, the match was a fraction of a penny to the dollar,” said Janette. “It kind of washed out the dollars.” After last year, we “looked forward to this year,” said Frischkorn. “But they changed the rules, and instead of them matching,” we had to find our own matching donations. The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools was offered a $2,500 dollar match by an anonymous donor if it could raise more than $5,000, which was accomplished. Still, there were plenty of benefits to promoting Give to the Max Day. “I think it brings awareness to those that are thinking about donations,” said Palmer. “It puts a fire under them, gets people to act.” “It provides a focus for giving one time a year,” said Frischkorn.

Last year, the publicity of the event also helped to bring in new donors. By listing every foundation, organization and cause on the GiveMN Web site, this year saw similar results. “About 20 percent [of all donations were from] new donors,” said Janete. “Also a lot of [regular] donors that haven’t donated in a while.” Despite the lack of matching funds, GiveMN did offer donors a chance to win one of 24 hourly golden tickets. If their name was randomly selected, the nonprofit they gave to was awarded $1,000. The GiveMN Web site also said that an online donation of $1 costs 7 cents, compared to 20 cents for grant writing and $1.25 for acquiring new donors through regular mail. “We think it is a great benefit to us, not only Give to the Max Day call to action,” said Palmer, but also to “support us year round with online donations.” Info: givemn.com.

International School packs meals for families this holiday season BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The International School of Minnesota is going local for its foodpacking event this year. The Eden Prairie school held its first annual food-packing event last year, when students raised $60,000 for 285,000 meals they helped pack and deliver to the Dominican Republic. This year, after some people pointed out there are Minnesotans who need help as well, the school changed its target area, said Rebecca Timmins, a spokesperson for the college-pre institution on Eden Prairie’s north edge. “We are raising money to do 2,400 family sized holiday meals,” she said. The meals feed four to six people and include vegetable, potatoes, stuffing and a coupon for a turkey or ham, Timmins said. Each meal costs $18, she said, and the school has held fundraisers for the meals, including an October garage sale that raised $8,000. Once students and school staff pack the meals on Dec. 17, local

organizations will pick them up and distribute them sometime after Dec. 18 and in time for the holidays. Hope for the City, People Reaching Out to other People and the CAP Agency will distribute the meals to families throughout the region. For volunteers and students, the service this year is much closer to home than last year. In June, 15 International School students flew to the Dominican Republic and helped distribute the food they packed back at their school. The students were in the Dominican Republic for a week, Timmins said, helping build houses, work with children and deliver the boxes of food. Before they left Minnesota, they worked with the Maple Grove-based agency Impact Lives to go through leadership training. Timmins said the school tries to mix it up when it comes to local and international donations and service. “It’s an ongoing campaign,” she said. Info: ism-sabis.net.

Give young children in your life the gift of literacy Reading to kids at early age helps them succeed later

BY KATHERINE DEBERTIN AND JACKIE CAVERLY • GUEST COLUMNISTS Do you have a very young child in your life? It’s not too soon to think about what you can do to help prepare him or her for school. Research shows that children who have developed six basic pre-reading skills begin school more ready to learn. Children need to know the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes, be able to rhyme and hear smaller parts of words, know how to handle a book, know what words mean and know how to use words to describe or tell a story. These skills are needed before children can learn to read. Does it sound like a lot? In a way, children do have a lot of work to do, but it most often looks like playing. There are many ways for parents to help children grow into readers, but reading together every day is a joyful, necessary and easy way to help children develop these skills. The early literacy years aren’t about drills and flashcards – they’re about exposing children to language and allowing them the space and time to get comfortable, develop their own expertise, and most of all, have fun. As parents and caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher. Reading together, singing and chanting nursery rhymes all contribute to literacy skills. Start doing these together from the moment your child is born. Your physical presence during these activities actually

Establishing a love of reading in your child will help them succeed in every school subject later on. The librarians at your local library are there to help. They can guide you to books and resources. Plan on attending free story times. Story times at Hennepin County libraries are grounded in the most current research and are presented with an

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

Eden Prairie schools are making the right choices BY CHARLES KYTE • GUEST COLUMNIST Minnesota school districts are in the business of providing the best possible education for every child in our state, and they are faced with some serious challenges along the way. Educators must address the gaps that exist in opportunity among our students, the looming financial changes that come with austerity budgets and declining or shifting enrollment as well as the very diverse needs of our learners. District leaders are being called upon to make difficult recommendations and decisions as communities grapple with these issues. Ultimately, schools and programs must sometimes be changed and rearranged to maximize opportunity for all children, and that may provoke concern and even anger from some community members. Recently, several of our local districts have been scrutinized and criticized for their proposed changes. Eden Prairie and Minneapolis district leaders have made recommendations to improve the educational setting for students. These advisements are not so different than those taking place in the recent past in places such as Anoka-Hennepin, St. Paul, and Elk River, and won’t be unlike decisions that will need to be made soon in other districts, such as Stillwater. In the case of Eden Prairie, the mix of children of different socioeconomic backgrounds became seriously unbalanced among elementary schools, a condition that is known to exacerbate an “achievement gap,” (a serious disparity among the performance of various student groups, especially defined by gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status). There was no easy solution, and Superintendent Melissa Krull made the recommendations that will position the Eden Prairie Schools to provide a fair opportunity for all the children in the district. Krull’s recommendations and those of her administrative team were well researched and will move the district in a positive direction over time. Although subjected to criticism, Krull has stood her ground so that the children of the district would all have a fair opportunity for their education.

GUEST COLUMN We commend her for her courage. We feel saddened that some in her community have argued for no change and have done so through personal attacks. In Minneapolis, Supt. Bernadeia Johnson’s recommendation to eventually close the old North High School and to create a magnet high school on the north side will provide students with better educational opportunities in a better setting. We hope that this set of changes will better serve both students and parents. In both of these cases, the superintendents have been called upon to make hard and courageous decisions. I suspect each would have enjoyed a quiet fall without the need to be in the angry eye of some parents and community members. Instead, they made the recommendations that will allow their districts to best serve students in the future. It is not easy being a leader of an entity as public as a school system. We at MASA commend these leaders. We also know that there are other education leaders throughout Minnesota facing similar situations that will require difficult recommendations and decisions in the near future as we continue to adjust to changing student populations and restricted revenues for our schools. This is not only a phenomenon of the larger metropolitan districts. Over the past two decades, many rural Minnesota school districts were forced by circumstances such as those mentioned above into reorganizing, consolidating or merging districts and sharing services as a means to survive and provide a sound educational experience for local students. Every one of these disruptions to the status quo causes angst among citizens and parents. It is interesting to note that the group that has most quickly adjusted to these changes were the students themselves. Students meet new friends, adjust to the new settings and move on with their education. Kyte is Executive Director of Minnesota Association of School Administrators located in St. Paul.

Is the discussion over, or is it just beginning? What a difference a few months seem to make. If you’ve been following the Eden Prairie School Board, you will note that a great deal has changed recently. From the day policy governance was adopted more than three years ago, we along with everyone else was told that the superintendent would henceforth make all the important decisions and the board would monitor objectives. Now the school board has made it clear they – the elected officials – will make the latest important decision on restructuring elementary schools and creating attendance boundaries. Good for them. The board should never have abrogated its rights to represent the voice of the people in the running of the school district in the first place. We have also been told ad nauseam for the past three-plus years that the chairman of the board is the only one who can speak for the elected members of the board and she and only she can be quoted. Last week, a commoner was quoted in the neighboring daily newspaper as disagreeing with the decision mentioned above. Good for Carol Bomben. We will take it that this silly notion that elected officials cannot speak freely to a free press has been put aside in favor of a more balanced access policy when it comes to discussing school district business. Eden Prairie is still the first and only district I’ve heard of in 30 years of newspaper work that had such a rule. It’s comforting to know some of the insanity is being dealt with. We have said it before … policy governance wasn’t necessarily the culprit when it comes to the district losing touch with its constituency. The interpretation of the policy to say the board had zero power other than to review decisions was the problem all along. That and the part that talks about involving stakeholders in decisions. The district clearly missed the boat on that one.

PAUL WAHL Managing Editor

A school district can have the most lucid, talented superintendent in the history of education and that person is still going to have difficulty running things without the voice of the people being factored into decisions. That’s not saying the administration and board have to agree with every voice that yalps, to paraphrase Whitman, but there is an obligation to listen and weigh input … and to respect those who have differing opinions. Calling taxpayers “white noise” and “whiners” and “disgruntled” does little to move the discussion forward. I hope that is abundantly clear to the Eden Prairie School District at this point. It is important to note here that while there seems to be a wave of sane thinking sweeping over the district, this is not the time for anyone to fold the tents and go home. Thomas Jefferson said it best: The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. I would encourage everyone who has been involved in the discussion about boundaries to stick around and see how it all comes out. Then once a decision has been made, jump in and help turn it into a resounding success. Don’t go home and sit by the fireplace and think to yourself: “Well we showed them. They’ll never do that again.” If you don’t stay involved, there will be another train wreck somewhere down the road. That’s human nature. Jefferson was an astute observer of human nature. We should take a page out of his book and adopt it as our own. One last bit of Jeffersonian wisdom: All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

Objects in the mirror may be better than they appear GUEST COLUMN

BY BRENDAN PRIGGE • GUEST COLUMNIST Forget the past. Let bygones be bygones. What’s done is done. Don’t dwell on the past. Sounds like good cliché advice, but I’m going to ask you to try something different for a little while. I encourage you to take a look in the rear view mirror of your life; to dwell on the past for at least a few minutes. Ignore your instinct to focus on the present and future, and look back over the year that is quickly passing away. Are you satisfied with the year? Are you happy with the way it has gone for you? If you had to rate 2010 on a scale of 1-10, where would it fall. I think it’s prudent to look back and take stock of all that has happened. We can learn about ourselves, set goals for the year ahead, and most important, as we look back we are better able to see the hand of God at work in our lives.

God’s work in our lives isn’t always pleasant. In fact, it may rarely seem pleasant so when we’re in the thick of it, we may not see what God is doing. Later however, as we look back on what has taken place, it’s often easier to see the broader brush strokes of God’s plan. We’re more likely to be blind to the potential benefits of our experiences while they’re happening. Once the adrenaline drains away and the Serotonin levels stabilize we may find ourselves in a better position to evaluate exactly what has happened. You might make a list of the good that has come to you through the past year. Isaiah 63:7 “I will tell of the kindness of the LORD, the deeds for which

Dozens of library book sales scheduled in Hennepin County BY MUNA HASSAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Best sellers, cook books, science fiction, teen and children’s books are just some of the genres that will be available for the public to buy for $2 or less at library book sales throughout Hennepin county. Library Friends Groups throughout Hennepin County will have book sales occurring with thousands of books on sale at each Hennepin County library. Seven book sales are remaining this year, with more scheduled through October 2011. Some participating libraries include Oxboro Library and Penn Lake Library in Bloomington, Eden Prairie Library, Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka, Hopkins Library, Maple Grove Library, and Augsburg Park Library in Richfield. About half the books on sale come from donations from the community while the other half come from overstock at the library. All the proceeds of the book sales go to the library, but that is not the only reason for the sales. “It’s a two-fold,” said Allen Maffit of Oxboro Library in Bloomington, “The first is to make money, but it’s also about putting books in the hands of the community.” The book sales are run by volunteers from the Library Friends Group of the specific library at which the book sale occurs. Friends groups work much like a PTA at a high school. They raise

money for the library to put on free programming as well as to buy new books and shelving. Each library has a different collection of Visit minnlocal.com books, which adds to the diversity of the sales. for videos, more “It’s a treasure chest photos and daily of opportunities of news updates things to find,” said Rachel Fulkerson, Public Awareness and Communications Director of the Library Foundation of Hennepin County. At Oxboro Library, Maffit said hundreds of people come to each sale, with the possibility to sell thousands of books. With donations from all walks of life, some books may not be fit to sell, but Maffit said no books get thrown away during the process. If they can’t be sold, they go to the free box. “Nothing escapes,” said Maffit. “Everything is taken home.” While the public can rent books from the library on a regular basis, the book sales allow people to own the books they really want, which, to some, is the most important part of the sales. “The best part is watching people come in and score the books they want to own,” said Maffit. A complete list of Library Friends Groups book sales is available online. Info: supporthclib.org/friends.

Mary Beth Carlson still pouring heart and soul into her music hope. Does a parent just accept that? Absolutely not. So we continue to hang on to the joy. It’s our reality. That’s where the CD came from,” she said. The Minnesota pianist, composer and Mary Beth Carlson arranger has released 19 CD’s of spiritually pianobased music over the years. “More than the objective of writing and performing music to help myself, I do truly play music for the healing process in other people,” Carlson said. “Sometimes music is the language that can really speak to the heart and puts that peace that give’s people what they need at a certain point in time.” Fellow musician and long-time collaborator Diane Tremaine says Carlson “is a delight to work with. I have the greatest respect for her.” The cellist has played with artists ranging from Prince to Elton John and The Minnesota Orchestra. She will perfor m with Carlson in Bloomington.

BY KYLE LUND • CONTRIBUTING WRITER “There is a story behind every song that I write and usually behind every song that I arrange that is very intimately significant to me,” said Mary Beth Carlson. “This whole journey really framed us and a purpose for me in writing songs.” Carlson’s inspiration for her latest compact disc, “Smile with a Song in Your Heart,” is her daughter’s battle with cerebral palsy and autism. Recently, growing side effects have profoundly challenged Carlson and her family. “I started writing songs that had themes of peace and the need for restoration for the calm in our home that had always been there” said Carlson, who will perform Friday, Dec. 10 in Bloomington. As the severity of her daughter’s illness appeared to stabilized, Carlson says her writing progressed into songs about hope. “The doctors, with a diagnosis of psychosis and schizophrenia told us there was no cure, and therefore no

“Mary Beth is the same, on-stage, off or wherever. I’m never wondering anything with her. In this business that is very refreshing. She is the real deal,” said Tremaine. World-class guitar player Billy McLaughlin was a guest artist on Carlson’s latest CD. The two solo performers met years ago at a benefit and finally had a chance to work together. “She believes in the magic of music. It’s funny she told me just to come in [to the studio] and the magic would happen, and she was right. She was happy with what I played,” McLaughlin said. “Supportive listeners” is the term Carlson uses for her fans, the word “fan” itself is a bit of a turn-off. “Everybody understands what that word is. To me it doesn’t feel as friendly. ‘Supportive listener’ feels like the kind of listeners who respond to me with emails, phone calls and their letters. It says what I mean, a reflection of how I feel about the people appreciating the music we’ve shared for years and years,” said Carlson. The driving force behind Mary Beth Carlson is her faith.

Several charges for man who fired gun outside hotel in EP BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Mohad Ali, a 19-year-old Minneapolis resident, is facing several charges for possessing and firing a gun at an Eden Prairie hotel parking lot. The following details and allegations were included in criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. Around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, police responded to a shots fired report at the Best Western Eden Prairie Inn, 11500 W. 78th St. Ali had allegedly fired four rounds at a man after the two of them fought. The fight started after the two men and others were creating a disturbance in the hotel hallway. That disturbance moved into the parking lot, where several men were seen fighting along with several women watching. After the fight between Ali and another man broke up, Ali pulled out a black handgun. Ali shot several times across the parking lot, toward the other man running away. Ali then fled in a green car. He is now in custody. There were no reports of anyone wounded from the gunshots.

According to Lt. Greg Weber of the Eden Prairie Police Department, there were 10-15 construction workers adjacent to the hotel property that morning. The shots were fired parallel to the construction sight, across the hotel parking lot and toward a construction-sight trailer parked at the end of the lot, Weber said. Witnesses later identified Ali as the shooter. “It’s an isolated incident,” Weber said. “Any shots-fired call is an isolated one in Eden Prairie.” According to Hennepin County jail records, Ali was brought to jail Tuesday, Nov. 23, and bail has been set at $100,000. Both Minneapolis and Eden Prairie police departments have charged Ali. He was charged with possession of a firearm and simple robbery in Minneapolis and assault in Eden Prairie. He is also facing four other charges related to possession of a firearm and assault. For just one of the charges, (second-degree felony assault in Eden Prairie) he could face three to seven years in prison, up to a $14,000 fine or both.

Three Rivers Parks successful with reusable bottle program Garage Floors/ Block Repair

This spring, the Three Rivers Parks Board approved a pilot program to phase out the sales of beverages in disposable plastic containers at Park District facilities by summer 2010. Three Rivers developed a staff-training program, purchased reusable bottles and created public education materials in time to launch the pilot program on Memorial Day weekend. Implementation of the pilot program required support from throughout the organization. A key component of the program was education for park staff and the public. Collectively, the parks sold 10,374 reusable bottles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Baker National Golf Course and Hyland Visitor Center sold the most reusable bottles at 3,257 and 2,352, respectively. The reusable bottle option was successful in reducing the number of disposable plastic bottles sold, according to the Three Rivers Park District. Thus eliminating a portion of the Park

District’s waste stream, which was the objective of the pilot program. A comparison of sales data for water in disposable plastic bottles indicates a 48 percent reduction in 2010 from the previous summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Overall, the pilot program was “wellreceived” by park guests, Three Rivers Park District stated. A survey conducted by Park District research staff indicated that 83 percent of respondents agreed with the statement “Three Rivers should encourage the use of reusable water bottles.” Maintenance staff has confirmed that the reusable bottles were not being tossed in park waste receptacles. Supervisors and managers in the park system attributed much of the success of the program to the seasonal staff for promoting and explaining the reusable bottle option. With board support, staff proposes to continue the reusable bottle program in 2011.

Red Cross opens stores in Minnetonka, Eden Prairie BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Starting the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers in Eden Prairie and Minnetonka have a chance to purchase a different kind of gift for the holidays. The American Red Cross Twin Cities Chapter has opened two Store of Hope locations, one at the Eden Prairie Center and another at the Ridgedale Shopping Center in Minnetonka. There, shoppers can learn about services the Red Cross provides, make a donation or write a message to a member of the armed services. “For us, it’s a real grassroots way to get out and meet people,” Twin Cities chapter Chief Executive Officer Phil Hansen. Those who make a donation can also receive a product card, to forward the donation as a gift for someone else. Statewide, The Red Cross has also opened stores in Mankato and Rochester. Countrywide, there are only two other locations, one in Las Vegas and another in Phoenix, Hansen said. Hansen said the Twin Cities chapter got the idea after learning about a temporary store that opened in Portugal last year. The store was a success in connecting with people in the area, and the local chapter wanted to try their hand at the venture. While connecting with people in the Eden Prairie and Minnetonka

area, the stores can hopefully educate people about all of the Red Cross’ services. Last year, the Twin Cities chapter responded to 300 disaster incidents and helped around 450 families. The Red Cross may be well known for its major disaster response and blood drives, but the Red Cross also responds to individual family disasters, such as house fires and apartment complex fires. The Red Cross also provides Emergency Medical Technician training, swimming lessons, babysitter training and emergency communication between military service members and their family members. Up until Dec. 8, people can stop in a Red Cross store and grab a greeting card to write a message to a veteran, active service member or service members in the hospital. “You can just come on in and make up a card for a service member, if that’s something that moves you,” Hansen said. The stores will be open from Nov. 26 through the end of December, Hansen said. Store hours will follow the malls’ regular hours. All donations will go toward local services, Hansen said, and since the mall space and other operations are also donated, nearly all the funds will go toward the services the Red Cross provides, Hansen said. Ken Parker’s ‘Heaven Rejoices’ on stage Dec. 10-12 in Burnsville BY JENNIE OLSON • SUN NEWSPAPERS How do you creatively tell a story that’s been repeated for more than 2,000 years? For Ken Parker, Executive Director of Christian Arts Ministries in Bloomington, it’s all about perspective. Berean Baptist Church in Burnsville and his group are combining talents to perform “Heaven Rejoices,” an original Christmas musical written by Parker and hosted at Berean Baptist. “Churches year after year are looking for a way to retell the story of the nativity and incarnation,” Parker said. “This musical is very unique in the fact that it’s all done from the angels’ points of view.” The musical begins before the world was created with the angels overhearing God the Father discussing how he’s going to create a universe. They are astounded about his plans and the revelation that there will be other created beings. The story journeys from before the world was created until the nativity. “We have about 90 voices in the choir and wonderful, skilled actors, actresses and dancers. It’s a remarkable assemblage of people,” Parker said. Choir members and dancers from Berean and Parker’s ministry will be dressed as the angels and will be accompanied by a professional orchestra. The music is an array of many musical genres, including contemporary, jazz, Broadway, gospel, ballads, Spanish, calypso and classic. “When I say classic, I don’t mean classical,” Parker added. “I mean that it’s the wonderful, rich, lush sounds of big orchestras and tight choral singing. It’s

that classic American sound that has been with us since the 1920s.” Parker wrote Heaven Rejoices in 1981, and Bob Krogstad, Dove Aw a r d - w i n n i n g Visit minnlocal.com arranger for artists Sandi Patty, Mel Tormé, for videos, more Michael Crawford and photos and daily Natalie Cole, wrote the news updates orchestration. “He’s one of the great orchestrators in America and has done some phenomenal stuff. It’s all beautiful writing in this musical,” Parker said. Parker has been involved in local church ministry for more than 45 years as a pastor, worship leader and dramatist. He founded Christian Arts Ministries after leaving a post at Grace Church in Eden Prairie to create original productions that allow Christians to use their talents to communicate the gospel. He joined the Berean Baptist staff in March after the former minister of music was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer able to continue his duties as director. Originally, Parker was intending to stay for a month, but the church asked if he would be able to stay for an additional year, which he accepted. Parker asked Berean if the church would consider doing a combined Christmas production with his ministry rather than having two separate productions. “I love the people,” Parker said of Berean Baptist. “They’re just delightful, and I’m having a good time.” The performances will take place Dec. 10-12 at Berean Baptist Church, located at 309 East County Rod 42. For more information or for tickets, call 952223-1870 or visit heavenrejoices.com.

But, in October, the School Board decided it would review the administration’s K-6 plans that are currently in the works and review and vote on the administration’s plan in December. Some things the School Board wanted to see in the administration’s report were unclear until the Tuesday, Nov. 23, meeting, when Boardmember Chuck Mueller added a motion to the agenda. He said it was also written by Board members Ranee Jacobus and Suzanne Kutina. The motion requested that certain details be provided and questions answered regarding the K-6 transition process, including funding, how programs will shift to all elementary schools, what school integration options were considered and what curriculum alternatives were considered, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The final motion has been reprinted on the facing page. The underlined portions of the motion represent the portions added to the original motion before it was approved. The motion said it’s time the superintendent explain what the proposed changes will mean. It’s the fourth point in the preamble of the motion. “4. Whereas the Board believes that at this time it is required under OE1 to provide additional clarity with respect to the Board’s February 23, 2010 approved resolution.” O.E.s (Operational Expectations) are specific policies that guide the superintendent’s conduct. Under governance policy, the School Board monitors the superintendent’s work, using these operational expectations as its guide. O.E. 1 says the superintendent should take reasonable steps to prevent “… unlawful, unethical, unsafe, discriminatory, disrespectful, imprudent” decisions or actions that are against School Board policy or endanger “ … the organization’s public image or credibility.” So, for the superintendent and administration to better explain the K-6 plans, the Nov. 23 motion’s

· Dec. 14, 4 p.m. (review of administration’s report) · Dec. 21, 6 p.m. (School Board vote on the report) All meetings will take place at the Administrative Services Center, 8100 School Road. Info: edenpr.org.

“Resolve” has 12 categories of information the School Board is requesting from the administration. By the end of December, the School Board will vote on the sufficiency of the administration’s response to those 12 items. Those 12 items include how the K-6 model will affect test scores for certain grades and groups; how Forest Hills Elementary programs could be replicated at all current K-4 schools to improve student achievement; how one campus instead of two will improve achievement for Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion; how achievement gaps in certain grades will be reduced and how it will improve achievement overall; how much the transition of the K-6 model will cost, and proof the administration is prepared to handle the transition. Those are details requested that reflect some feedback and questions the community and School Board members have had during the K-6 planning process. One reason for approving the K-6 model was to address a reported dip in test scores in grade 5 from grade 4. By adding 5-6 grades to all elementary schools, which removes Oak Point Intermediate, students would have fewer transitions from one school to another throughout their K12 education, and it could help their achievement. So, the motion asks for evidence of quantifiable loss in student achievement as a result of the current school configuration (item 1.b in the resolution). Another option that the motion requests administration to flesh out is an analysis of how Forest Hills

programs that have seemingly resulted in improved student achievement could be replicated in the other elementary schools. Krull has said the district spent $200,000 on particular educational programs for Forest Hills. When questions came up in early November regarding how those programs would be shifted to the other elementary schools, Krull said the administration did not yet have details about how that transition would take place. During a School Board workshop Nov. 16, Mueller asked how applying specialized programs or additional support to other schools’ programs might help achievement as well. The motion addresses that concern in item 1. a. of the resolution. The 12th and final motion item was an amendment that Boardmember Parker introduced. It requires additional elementary school integration methods are included, rather than relying on elementary school boundary changes alone. That amendment to the motion passed 4-3, with Parker, Kutina, Jacobus and Boardmember John Estall voting in favor of it. The approval of the entire motion was approved 6-1, with Boardmember Carol Bomben voting against it. Krull said the administration should be able to provide the information requested by Dec. 10. A special School Board meeting was scheduled 4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, to review the information. A School Board vote on the sufficiency of the information could happen at the Dec. 21 School Board meeting. Those specific dates were not included in the original motion, but added as an amendment as well. Before a vote on the Nov. 23 motion was taken, Boardmember Jacobus said she said the motion was important for two reasons. “The board has listened to all the community input, and now there needs to be a lot of questions answered and kind of crossing the Ts and dotting the I’s,” Jacobus said. The board is very committed to doing the right thing for all students’ achievement, which is the number one driver for any district reconfiguration, Jacobus said. MEETING: TO PAGE 25

Meeting FROM PAGE 24 Second, they’re very dedicated to integrated schools, she said. “I don’t know why that ever came into question,” Jacobus said. Krull thanked the motion’s authors for presenting it, and said it was helpful for the administration and brings some clarity to the process.

Boardmember Kutina said it helps lay the foundation for how the district will move forward. Board Chair Ross said the information being requested is in the spirit of the outcomes they’re looking for, in terms of integration, better results for all students and in terms of the reconfiguration approve on Feb. 23 is still the right answer. But, Mueller said, the motion asks for clarity, particularly in item G, which questions what destination school options were considered as part of the K-6 planning.

Krull FROM PAGE 1 After an initial session Nov. 9, four additional closed meetings took place Nov. 12, Nov. 15 and Nov. 16. The series of meeting were the first time in recent history that more than one meeting was needed to formulate a performance review. The Eden Prairie School District’s summary of those meetings is as follows.

Krull received significant praise from the board in the statement. “The Board is proud of the significant gains made by the Superintendent and staff in narrowing the achievement gap and continued improvement in AYP status,” the summary state. “Improved performance at Central Middle School is also admirable. Several education programs were referenced. “The Board assumes that the Superintendent will continue the focus on accelerated improvement in the achieve-

25

ment of English Learners,” the statement reads. “The Superintendent recognizes that the evaluation of progress is best accomplished through the timely and effective monitoring of all Results policies. “The Board continues its support of Dr. Krull and her leadership team and shares their commitment to increased achievement for all students. We value the tremendous dedication on behalf of Dr. Krull and all district staff in accomplishing the mission of educating for success in a diverse and changing world.”

Leading scorer back to bolster EP’s hopes Kyle Rau will remain an Eagle instead of departing for Junior A competition BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS One major concern for Eden Prairie head boys hockey coach Lee Smith has already been taken care of before the 2010-11 season begins. The Eagles’ leading scorer from last season, senior center Kyle Rau, will remain with the Eden Prairie High School program. He had considered passing up his final prep season to play at the Junior A level in preparation for his college career at the University of Minnesota. The future Gopher player decided to remain at EPHS and help the Eagles possibly earn a state tournament berth. Last season, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Rau was one of the leading scorers in the state with 75 points on 39 goals and 36 assists. “There was never any doubt regarding Kyle Rau’s loyalty to our school and his teammates,” said coach Smith. “However, there was some question of whether playing Junior A hockey might help him be better prepared to enter college hockey. But in the end, he wanted to stay with his Eden Prairie teammates and we are glad to have him back. “Kyle is a game-changer with high skill levels and a great work ethic. He will be our all-time leading scorer by the end of his senior season.” Rau will provide leadership as a tricaptain along with his brother Curt, a defenseman, and senior defenseman Dan Molenaar. Molenaar had seven goals and 22 assists for 29 points last season. Other Eagle returning forwards are seniors David Rath, Mark Rath, Luc Gerdes, Des Shavlik and Ben Boldenow. Gerdes had nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points last season. Mark Rath had 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists. Two Eden Prairie varsity newcomers are sophomore forward Mason Bergh and junior forward Danny Thayer.

Eden Prairie goalie Andrew Ford makes a pad save in boys hockey action last season. Ford is back to tend goal for the Eagles during 2010-11 after helping Eden Prairie post a 22-5-1 record a year ago. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer Eden Prairie has plenty of depth at defense. Molenaar and Curt Rau return along with senior Nick Seeler and senior Joe Kerker. Adding depth to the Eden Prairie defense will be juniors Luc Sudman and Michael DeCesare. Eden Prairie returns senior Andrew Ford as its starting goalie. Senior Patrick Hellier will back up Ford. Eden Prairie was 22-5-1 last season and won the Lake Conference with a 17-2 record. The Eagles finished second in the Section 6AA tournament, defeating Robbinsdale Armstrong 5-2 and Wayzata 4-1 before losing 7-2 to Minnetonka in the finals.

Eden Prairie will host Apple Valley at 7:30 p.m. in its opener Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Eden Prairie Community Center Arena. The Eagles travel to Bloomington Ice Garden for a 7:30 p.m. game against Jefferson Saturday, Dec. 4. Eden Prairie then heads to Lakeville North for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Ames Arena. “We have put together a challenging schedule to get our team prepared for the section tour nament,” said Smith. “We have size, speed, skill and experience. “We have lofty goals for this season.”

Minnesota Valley club honors Bulger, Bachman

EPHS boys basketball returns tournament-tested veterans

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Caddying can be a rewarding experience for high school students looking for a summer job. And Minnesota Valley Country Club head golf professional Rob Hary is a huge supporter of his course’s youth caddie program. Recently, Hary Charlie Bulger announced that Eden Prairie High School sophomore Charlie Bulger and Bloomington Kennedy junior Heather Bachman are MVCC’s boys and girls Caddies of the Year for 2010. “We believe caddying is more than a summer Heather Bachman job,” said Hary. “It is an investment in the future. “We embrace the core values that underscore a caddie’s presence on the course – hard work, cooperation, persistence and respect. It’s part of our golf heritage and that’s why we continue to offer caddies the opportunity to caddie at Minnesota Valley.” “Caddying has been a very large and positive influence in my life the past few years,” said Bulger, 15. “It has taught me independence and how to communicate easily with others. “I really enjoy working with Minnesota Valley members and the staff. I am honored by this award.” Bulger does well in academics at EPHS and is a member of the Eagle golf team. He also enjoys music, camping, fishing and traveling. Bachman, 16, is a veteran caddie at MVCC. “This was my fourth summer as a caddie and I have had a great time,” said Bachman. “I have been able to work with great people and enjoy being outside and around golf. “I’m so happy to be a part of this program and thank everybody at Minnesota Valley for what they have taught me as a caddie.” Bachman enjoys being active. She competes in volleyball, basketball and golf at Kennedy. She is also part of the school’s choir.

State tournament experience abounds on the Eden Prairie boys basketball roster this season. The Eagles have six players back from last season’s tournament squad that placed fourth at state. Eden Prairie finished 26-5 overall after losing 62-53 to Henry Sibley in the state Class 4A, Section 2 third-place game last March at Target Center. The Eagle opened the tourney with a 61-46 triumph over Owatonna before losing 62-58 to St. Cloud Tech in the semifinals. During the regular season, Eden Prairie won the Lake Conference championship with a 19-3 record before going on to clinch the Section 2 title. “Our state tournament experience should be a huge positive for this year’s team,” said Eden Prairie head coach David Flom. “Our loss in the semifinals and thirdplace game should help our motivational level heading into this season’s schedule. “Our team has high expectations and wants to win a state championship. We will probably more skilled offensively than we were a year ago but must play as well defensively as we did last season.” Three seasoned Eden Prairie veterans are senior tri-captains Jack Klukas, Grant Soderberg and Grayson Levine. All three players are guards. Soderberg, an all-conference selection as a junior, averaged 12.5 points per game and was Eden Prairie’s secondleading scorer behind Brett Ervin’s 16.1points per game average. Ervin is now a member of the University of MinnesotaDuluth basketball squad. Klukas netted 6.1 points per game as a junior. Levine provides the Eagles athleticism and should be one of the team’s best defensive players. He was a standout player on the Eden Prairie football team this past season. Four other experienced Eagle players are senior center Conner Nord, senior guard Derek Dedeker, junior guard Sander Mohn and senior forward Dylan Stewart. EPHS opens its season against host Minneapolis Washburn at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. The Eagles host Bloomington Jefferson at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10.
