Eden Prairie School Board will consider more options
Lifelong city resident pens her fifth book on EP history
Choice pilot programs, K-5 model remain up for more discussion
BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS
BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School Board has approved an administrative report, which reaffirmed the February decision to transition to K-6 elementary schools from the current K-4 model. That decision came Dec. 21, after almost a year of administrative planning for the K-6 change, and after months of input from the community regarding the K-6 process and a proposed elementary school boundary map that would change where an estimated 1,100 students attend school. Since February some have petitioned and requested the School Board review other options for K-6, and since October many have asked for choice school or curriculum options. After the Dec. 21 vote, the School Board not only voted (4-3) to have the administration look into choice school options, but it also considered looking into a K-5 option while the district transitions to the K-6 model.

ith winter only a little more than a week old, it’s already the snowiest season for the Twin Cities in two decades. This December also has set the record for the most snow.
With more than 34 inches at the Chanhassen National Weather Service reporting station, this month broke the record set in 1969, according to the National Weather Service. More snow was in the forecast for Dec. 31. WINTER: TO PAGE 16
Marie Wittenberg of Eden Prairie has come out with her fifth book about the city’s history. “Eden Prairie: A Brief History” was released this month and features the places and people that have come, gone and stayed since Native Americans were stewards of its land before the 1850s. Specifically, Marie Wittenberg the places include stores, post offices, city property, churches, homes, schools and libraries. The people include influential and prominent families, organizations and sports teams. “These things were just dropped in my lap,” Wittenberg said of the material used to write the book. Wittenberg acted as the Eden Prairie Historical Society president for 15 years. She took it over after longtime president and Historical Society founder Helen Anderson departed for Florida, Wittenberg said. HISTORY: TO PAGE 14

Texas man indicted in connection with Eden Prairie wire fraud A 35-year-old Texas man has been indicted for allegedly hacking into the computer network of an Eden Prairie business and stealing approximately $274,000. The following details and allegations were reported from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota. The indictment, which was filed in Minneapolis on Oct. 13, charges
Jeremey Parker of Houston, Texas, with one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer in furtherance of fraud and one count of wire fraud. The indictment alleges that from Dec. 23, 2008, through Oct. 15, 2009, Parker hacked into the computer network in order to obtain money belonging to Digital River Inc., a cyber-based busi-
ness. That money was obtained through a subsidiary, SWReg Inc. Parker, the indictment alleges, hacked into SWReg’s Internet system and caused money to be wire transferred to his bank account instead of the accounts of several software developers. If convicted, Parker faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in
prison on the wire fraud charge and 10 years on the computer hacking charge. A federal district court judge will determine all sentences. This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being United States Department of Justice prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Docherty.
filed in Hennepin County District Court. Michelle Willis, 44, of Minnetonka reportedly signed for medication in the name of seven residents at The Colony living facility, 429 Prairie Center Drive. The records indicated the residents did not need the medication, were no longer residents or showed others signs of tampering. An Eden Prairie detective spoke with Willis’ sister, who said Willis had taken medication from the facility. Willis also verified her signature in a medication log.
Willis could face up to five years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine for both the theft of controlled substances charge and a fifth-degree controlled substance possession charge.

My resolution this year: No resolutions for 2011 Of all the traditions involved with ringing in the New Year, I find resolutions to be the most ridiculous. It’s even more preposterous than eating black-eyed peas for good luck. Yet everyone does it. Make resolutions, that is. The blackeyed pea-eating is mostly a southern tradition. Most resolutions include the words “diet” and “in shape” in some combination. Think about it. The worst possible time to start a diet (or eating plans as they are now called) is the dead of winter when your body is in near hibernation. The cold makes you crave handfuls of lard slathered over cooked beef, as well as chocolate and creamy soups. None of that is diet food. Forget about dropping weight until spring. That’s when Mother Nature does it. Snow
PAUL WAHL Managing Editor
melts and runs off into streams, just like body fat does when the temperatures get warmer. If you’ve ever been anywhere near a health club around the first week of January, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Suddenly once placid and kind of relaxing sessions with free weights become a cacophony of people, sweat and noise. It’s like lifting weights in the subway. If you can stick it out until March, you’ll find yourself pretty much all alone again. That’s about the time most resolution people are abandoning ship.
Oh there are a handful who make a resolution about losing weight and stick to it. If you’re one, I’d like to hear from you. You should receive some type of reward for your efforts. Naturally there are dozens of other resolutions that folks come up with around this time of year. Spend more time with the family. Actually, that one’s reserved for politicians who find themselves forced to resign. It never fails, rather than saying “I’m quitting because I’m a scoundrel,” it always comes out “I’m quitting to spend more time with my family.” I’m going to be a better person. Okay, your first assignment is to head to the gym and learn how to put up with all of the resolution people. Being a better person isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You no doubt have your favorite. You’ve probably had the same resolution every year
for most of your life. Just the fact that you have to bring it up each year says something about your will power. Experts in this field (yes, there are some) tell us that effectively changing your habits requires small alterations in your behavior over a period of time. Time appears to be the key word. Humans have a hard time changing overnight. Have you ever tried to quit smoking? It takes some people years to finally kick the habit. Most American’s are part of the now generation. If I can’t have it now, I don’t want it. Delayed gratification isn’t our bag. We’d rather have the fat sucked out of us with a machine than spend a year getting in shape. This year, save yourself the grief. Join me in resolving not to have any resolutions in 2011. You’ll be much happier.
For health of waters, lay off the salt this winter Winter has arrived and along with it slippery sidewalks and driveways. For many, the first inclination is to toss handfuls of salt (sodium chloride or rock salt) at the ice in hopes of making it melt. First of all, if the temperature is below 15 degrees F, the salt won’t work. But there are other reasons to lay off the salt. Aside from the damage it can do to vehicles and structures, salt poses a major threat to the health of our lakes, streams and wetlands. While it’s easy to reach for a bag of salt and dump it on your sidewalk and driveway, that salt has to go somewhere when the snow melts. That “somewhere” is either into the sewer system and eventually into lakes and streams; or if it
GEOFF NASH Guest Columnist
ends up on the grass, seeping into the groundwater system. It doesn’t do your lawn any favors, either. So what difference does it make? Well, for one thing, salt doesn’t really break down, even if you can’t see it. Think of dissolving a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water; it’s invisible, but you sure can taste it. And just a little salt has a big impact. According to Connie Fortin, whose environmental consulting company has advised the Minnesota Department of
Transportation, the federal standard is about 1 teaspoon of salt per five gallons of water. More than that will harm whatever lives in the water; enough of it can kill fish and other aquatic life. High levels of salt can also hasten the contamination of soil along major highways. How bad is the problem? In 2008, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency listed five metro area streams as impaired by chloride. The Bassett Creek Watershed Commission, which works to maintain water quality in nine west metro cities, knows that chloride is a major pollutant in area lakes and streams. There are four things we recommend to protect lakes and streams:
• Sparingly apply a liquid deicer before a storm to prevent ice build-up. Make your own de-icer by combining a half-cup of rock salt (not table salt) with two cups of hot water. Use a spray bottle to apply it to sidewalks and other areas of concern. • Shovel snow early and often to prevent ice build-up. • Sweep up any left-over salt and store it for use later. • Remember that salt stops working at 15 degrees F, so avoid using it on those really cold days. Nash, a professional geologist, is administrator of the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission. Member cities include Crystal, Golden Valley, Medicine Lake, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, New Hope, Plymouth, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Saying goodbye to a dear friend “The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend.” – Henry David Thoreau Nobody I’ve encountered in my life has more encompassed those words than my former co-worker and friend Sally Thompson. Last week the world lost a great writer, storyteller, comJARED munity journalist, pet owner and – more importantly – HUIZENGA friend and mother. Community In the time that I knew her, Editor I’m hard-pressed to think of a more caring, selfless and gracious person. When I started at the Sun-Sailor, Sally was the first person I met. We shared a cubicle wall, so I found her easily accessible and always willing to answer my questions. I wasn’t new to community journalism, but with only six months of previous experience, I was still a little wet behind the ears. Despite that inexperience, Sally never held anything against me. She was willing to share her vast knowledge and experiences to help me improve my craft. She acted as a mentor, a confidant and an unlicensed therapist not only for myself but also for a majority of the other people in the newsroom. But Sally’s wisdom and caring wasn’t limited to the newsroom. She was genuinely interested in what was going on in our lives. And when she asked she truly listened to responses as opposed to simply hearing it. Sally was also a tough and stubborn woman who would impose her will upon you if she had to – but always with a smile and in a way that made it seem like you made the decision yourself. About four years ago I was very ill, but due to my own stubbornness refused to go to the doctor. Between May 5 and Aug. 5 I lost more than 40 pounds. I wasn’t dieting or exercising, I simply wasn’t eating or drinking – aside from Funyons and Mountain
Dew, which were the only things that didn’t make me sick. One morning I arrived at work and took my jacket off, exposing my T-shirt and my dwindling stomach. Sally, glancing up from her computer screen, noticed and immediately scolded, “you’re still not eating, are you?” I could lie to my mother, who was three hours away in South Dakota and couldn’t see me, but not to Sally – a mother herself. She saw right through me. When I told her I hadn’t been eating and for exactly how long, she sat in her desk and watched over the cubicle wall as I made a doctor’s appointment. If I hadn’t, she warned, she’d drag me there herself. When I told my mother the story, she started referring to Sally as my “Minneapolis Mom.” When the two finally met some time later, she told her that. I don’t think Sally minded the title. I think everyone who worked with or around Sally could tell a similar story. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She remembered the names and back-stories of your friends and families. And, for those with children, there’d be the for no special reason gift that she’d send home for them. Sally also was very proud of her own family and roots. She was a proud North Dakota native, with many interesting stories to tell about the people and situations that can only come out of small towns and she glowed any time she spoke of her alma mater, Concordia College. Nothing made her happier, however, than talking about her daughter, Laurie. The bond those two shared is one that most people can only dream of and the pride she showed when talking about Laurie and her accomplishments made your proud of her, even if you’d only met her a time or two. It was infectious. Sally, we all love you, will miss you terribly and will forever be better people for having the privilege of knowing you. Thank you for everything.

Community service runs in the family
14 'dump 14,000 GVW BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eleven-year-old Evan Keller didn’t have to look far for inspiration in putting together a community service project next month. His mother, Julie, has been involved for years with The Mama Ada Foundation, a faith-based initiative whose goal is address poverty in Kenya by providing tuition for young people and seeds for poor farmers. Ever since his mother became involved with the organization, Evan wanted to find a way to help. This fall he came up with an idea – a book sale to raise proceeds for the foundation, as well as the Intercongregation Communities Association food shelf in Minnetonka. “He’s been interested in doing something for other people with needs,” Julie said. “He came up with the idea and I thought, ‘why not now?’” Evan and his younger brother, Ben, 8, along with friends from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Minnetonka and classmates from The International School in Eden Prairie are organizing the book sale. It will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at St. David’s Church. Evan, who lives in Minnetonka, said he doesn’t expect the sale to raise a huge amount of money, but hopes it will lead to more events.
If you go The book sale – a fundraiser for The Mama Ada Foundation and Intercongregation Communities Association food shelf – will be held noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 13000 St. David Road in Minnetonka. For more information on the organizations, visit mamaadafoundation.org or icafoodshelf.org.
“It’s symbolic – hopefully the church will start more of this type of stuff and eventually it will get bigger,” he said. Julie said her sons and their friends were taking the initiative to organize the event. The experience of putting on a book sale will show them that not every initiative has to be huge, she added. “It’s a great, simple idea,” she said. “Kids have to learn there are practical ways to help out – they don’t have to be complicated. People can contribute where they can.” Evan said he hoped this would be the first of many projects for him – he added that he recently set up a pen pal in Kenya to communicate with. “I want to be involved with The Mama Ada Foundation in the future,” he said.

Regional blood banks need holiday generosity, too BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many organizations count on the generosity associated with the holiday season for an annual shot in the arm. For two regional organizations that provide lifesaving service year-round, they always need that extra shot in the arm during the holiday season. Or more accurately, a tiny hole in your arm. The American Red Cross and Memorial Blood Centers collect blood and blood products for use in hospitals across the Midwest. Family gatherings, out-of-state travels and the occasional 17-inch snowfall diminish the roster of available donors needed to meet local and regional needs during the holiday season. With donor centers and mobile units out of commission in observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day, the challenge to maintain an adequate blood supply increases. “This time of year can really be unpredictable,” according to Sue Gonsior, a spokesperson for the MidAmerica Blood Services Division of American Red Cross. Seasonal illnesses also play a role in the diminishing supply, she noted. “The need is constant,” she said. “The good news is that the products with the greatest risk of shortage are given by our most dedicated donors,” said Dr. Jed Gorlin, the vice president of medical and quality affairs for Memorial Blood Centers.
David Freemore, better known this time of year as “Santa,” has been donating platelets for 8 months, but has been playing Santa for decades. (Photo by Chris Dillmann • Sun Newspapers) Both organizations collect whole blood at their fixed-site locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul and several suburbs. They also collect blood through blood drives commonly held at schools, churches and offices. In addition the organizations collect blood platelets, a blood component that is commonly needed by heart and cancer patients.
Platelets are more challenging to collect, however, as they are more time- consuming and have a shorter shelf life. Red blood cells collected through whole blood donations have a 42-day shelf life, but platelets have a mere five-day shelf life, Gorlin explained. Whole blood donors are allowed to donate once every eight weeks, but platelet donors

may donate up to 24 times per year, giving the blood banks a larger recruiting pool to fill the natural void due to the holidays. The donor centers are taking appointments for platelet donations Jan. 2, according to Rachel Lindquist, a marketing and promotions specialist for Memorial Blood Centers. The Red Cross has similar holiday plans. Its donor centers
will be closed for the holidays, but will draw platelets by appointment on days the centers are otherwise closed. Both organizations have provided extra incentive for donors to find time during their holiday celebrations to make a donation. Memorial Blood Centers is giving away gift cards to several platelet donors through Jan. 3, and the Red Cross has daily drawings all month for gift cards. In addition to platelets, the Red Cross is also seeking type O negative blood, since it’s the universal donor type that can be transfused to anyone, Gonsior noted. “We are the ultimate Boy Scouts,” Gorlin said of Memorial Blood Centers. The organization is prepared for emergencies and shortages, he said, but just as a grocery store cannot overstock its lettuce supply, blood banks can’t overstock their blood donations, he explained. “Each donation is a precious gift.” Both organizations have donor centers in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Red Cross also has a donor center in Bloomington. Memorial Blood Centers has locations in Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Plymouth. Information about the Red Cross is available online at redcrosstc.org. Information about Memorial Blood Centers is at mbc.org. “We always need to have donors and donations,” Gorlin said. “Cancer and car accidents don’t take a holiday.”

Hennepin County reduces tax levy, cuts 2011 budget The Hennepin County Board Dec. 14 reduced the tax levy by an additional 1 percent and unanimously approved a 2011 county budget of $1.6 billion – $87.7 million or 5.32 percent less than the 2010 budget. It is the second consecutive year that the budget has decreased. The approved budget lowers the property tax levy to $669.4 million, a decrease of $6.8 million from 2010. Board Chair Mike Opat authored the resolution to lower the levy, noting that “genuine service cuts” will be a result. “Our message to taxpayers is this: We understand the economic situation facing many people, so we’re cutting property taxes in 2011,” Opat said. Individual property bills will vary depending on property types and assessments, Opat said. “The budget will begin to bring real pain to real people, but we simply cannot ask our taxpayers to fill the gaps left by state cuts,” he said. In addition, the board approved a 2011 operating budget, which is $1.4 billion or $26.8 million less than the 2010 level, and a 2011 capital budget, which is $134.8 million or $61 million less than the 2010 level. There will be no cost-of-living wage adjustments for staff for 2011, for the second consecutive year. In addition, the board, acting as the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and the Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, authorized an HCRRA levy of $18 million and an HCHRA levy of $5.6 million. HCRRA seeks to improve rail modes of transportation to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility. HCHRA authorizes strategic planning and community engagement to serve the housing and economic development and redevelopment of Hennepin County. The net property tax levy decrease by all taxing authorities is 0.25 percent. About 43 percent of the county’s annual budget is supported by property taxes; the remainder comes from federal and state dollars, fees for services, and other sources. Hennepin County Administrator Richard Johnson said he expects this budget is an interim budget that will be reviewed after the state takes action to deal with its deficit, expected early in 2011. Hennepin’s 2011 budget reduces all business lines with the least reduction falling in the Public Safety arena (less than 2 percent). “This results in cost savings,” he said, “but also means that residents and clients are seeing reductions in some services.”

Kelley finds niche on library board Six openings will be filled by commissioners BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Claudia Kelley fell in love with public libraries as a child. The Orono resident is still one of the strongest advocates for Hennepin County Libraries. Kelley, who serves as vice president of the library board, is one of 11 volunteers who oversee one of the nation’s strongest library systems. Each year, new recruits are sought to serve on the board. This year, there will be six openings. “I am honored to have the opportunity to help shape an institution that has had a great impact on my life,” Kelley said. Her family came to the United States from Europe after World War II. “My parents were overjoyed at the abundance of books in the Minnesota libraries, as English-language books had been hard to obtain in occupied Europe during the war,” she said. As the youngest in the family, Kelley was anxious to learn to read. Regular visits to the library branch located at Glen Lake Elementary School in Minnetonka were just the ticket. Eventually, Kelley received her own library card. “I believe that I wanted that card (then) more than I have since desired any other government document, including my driver’s license, voter’s registration card and marriage license I later acquired,” Kelley said. “It held the keys to the world. Kelley passed her love and appreciation for libraries onto her children. Her mother and her aunt are also recipients of library services at their respective senior living communities. Over the decades, Kelley has seen the impact technology has had on the libraries. “I’ve gone from looking up books in a card catalog to using my home computer to select, reserve and renew library materials,” she said. Her interest in technology was also instrumental in her decision to seek appointment to the library board. Kelley came aboard just as the planning was beginning to merge the Hennepin County and Minneapolis city library systems. She proclaims the merger a success. “We reopened three previously shuttered library branches and extended open hours throughout the system,” Kelley said,

There are 13 vacancies in various categories. The deadline to apply for citizen advisory board vacancies is Jan. 7, 2011. Interviews will be held in February. adding that the opening of two new libraries in Plymouth and Maple Grove have also been highlights of her tenure. Kelley will serve until Dec. 31, 2012. John Gibbs of Bloomington, Holly Guncheon of Plymouth and Jill Joseph of Eden Prairie are among those whose positions expire this week. The board meets monthly the fourth Wednesday at various library sites around the county. Members serve three-year terms.

History FROM PAGE 1 Wittenberg was born and raised in Eden Prairie, so she has lived much of
the history she writes about. “When it’s your relatives, and where you were born it’s different,” she said. “It’s just different.” That’s why she couldn’t resist stepping in to help keep the Historical Society going after Anderson left, she said.

The first church in Eden Prairie, a Presbyterian church, was constructed in 1869. It was built for $1,029 in cash with a $259 debt, which was later made up for (and then some) with a church festival. She graduated from high school in 1953, she said, with 19 people in her graduating class. Growing up, the area was rural, occupied mostly by families with dairy farms, she said. “Our closest neighbor was a mile away,” she said.
Her family had a farm on the Southwest part of Eden Prairie, in the quadrant of the city closest to the Miller’s Store, which burned down in 1963, according to Wittenberg’s book. HISTORY: TO PAGE 15

Binding breakdown
FROM PAGE 14 Eden Prairie was divided into four sections, Wittenberg said, and each had school, post office and store. There was a Methodist and a Presbyterian church in town, and Catholics could go to churches in Chanhassen or Shakopee. Now, there are more than 20 churches in Eden Prairie, she said. The growth of the area began in the 1960s, she said, after farmers started selling their land and the area was hit with people and traffic. “It was just incredible,” she said. The Eden Prairie Township that was established in 1858 officially became a village in 1963, according to the book. A comprehensive plan was also created, guiding the development of the city. Although more advanced, such comprehensive planning is still used today.

It includes recent developments, building renovations and accolades, such as the “Money” magazine naming Eden Prairie the best small city in the country and listing Legion Team’s trip to the 2010 World Series in August. “Everything is just really neat here,” Wittenberg said.

Winter FROM PAGE 1 Why all the snow? “Two things that came into play,” said weather service meteorologist Michelle Margraf. “There’s been extremely cold arctic oscillation, which brings the cold arctic air south combining with warm, moisture heavy air from the south mixing to cause a strong contrast of air masses resulting in the snow, and the tracks have been moving over the upper Midwest.” Margraf said this particular pattern usually doesn’t set up this early, and the storm that started the night of Dec. 10 and lasted through the following Saturday, turned out to be the fifth largest storm on record and largest storm ever in December in the state – 17 inches. When it comes to breaking records, all official records are taken at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which has reported 28.8 inches of snow this year. The totals differ because at times a storm will stall out with a line over the metro leaving some areas dry others with a fresh blanket of snow.
Worn out, Logan Campbell of Burnsville takes a break from sledding to watch others at the Staring Lake sledding hill. (Photo by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers) There has also been a trace or more of snow on 16 of the first 20 days of the month according the weather service. The snow is beginning to have an impact on cities. In Excelsior, superintendent of public works Dave Wisdorf said the city has funds set aside for snow removal.
“In our budget planning we have funds for contract help to plow snow,” Wisdorf said. “We just try to juggle hours to get a lot of work done before businesses open to make sure the streets are cleaned for the residents.” Wisdorf also said with the added work on the limited number of drivers in smaller communities means it’s a balancing act to make sure the drivers don’t become fatigued. This year, plowing isn’t the only concern. The City of Excelsior stockpiles the snow removed in the open lot next to the cemetery on Beehrle Ave. and open park space. The city then takes a blower to compact the snow to keep up with additional snow. “We’re starting to lose space,” Wisdorf said. “It is a season that people haven’t seen in 20 years.” In Shorewood, the city uses a method called “winging back” the snow, where the plows push the snow farther back from the boulevard or median. Since the city doesn’t haul snow because of fuel costs and lack of space to put it, public works director Larry Brown said the process after the last snow could take 2-3 weeks to do the 50 miles of roads in the city. “We understand the inconvenience of having large piles of snow in the boulevards and medians, but the need to have
a safe travel roadway is imperative,” Brown said. “We’re just asking people to be patient.” The city is also taking a hit financially because of the above-average snowfall. “Our snow and salt budget is very tight now, I think another huge snowfall would probably put us over,” Brown said. Because they have to get out early, starting at 2 a.m. if conditions permit, to get a jump-start on traffic, the added hours of overtime have also put a strain on the budget. Yet, Brown said things usually average out. “Even though we are seeing a spike in snow fall this month, we didn’t get much last spring so 2010 should even out,” Brown said. He also said if residents see any issues with sight distance in the intersections to email the city with the location. Another factor in the abnormal weather pattern is something meteorologists call the “Pineapple Express,” a term used for the warm, moist tropical air arriving from Hawaii. It creates tightly wound systems that have been providing so much moisture when it confronts the arctic air moving south. Along with the moisture in the storms, the intense low barometric pressures have created strong winds as well. WINTER: TO PAGE 17

Winter FROM PAGE 16 “Weather is a response to an imbalance in the atmosphere,” Margraf said. “The greater the temperature difference, the greater the winds blow.” The winds contributed to the severity of the storm that occurred midDecember. Then there are those who love the winter weather. “It’s absolutely wonderful,” said Fred Seymour with Three Rivers Park District. “It gets the people enthused, if they don’t see the snow in the backyard they have a harder time coming out. This is awesome.”
With overall park use up by 30 percent for the month over last year according to Seymour, the park district and its facilities are expected to have a good winter if the conditions stay good. Yet, too much a good thing can be bad. “We’re hoping we don’t have a lot more snow,” Margraf said. “We worry about the spring melt, there is already a lot of snow that will lead to large amounts of run-off.” Though, what is deemed “average” never really turns out to be, Margraf said the weather variables come with the territory. She also adds with the deep snow pack, expect a colder spring because it will take more of the sun’s energy to melt the snow instead of heating the air, as well as the snow reflecting the sun’s rays more. “It’s something we don’t see very often,” she said. “It’s been one of those Minnesota winters we’re famous for.”

BUSINESS EP resident donates to Courage Center Bud C. Moss of Eden Prairie has been a Courage Center Ski volunteer at Hyland Hills Ski and Snowboard Area in Bloomington since 2006. When he was awarded a Stover Volunteerism Award for Community Service by his employer Eaton Corporation earlier this year, he was asked to designate a nonprofit to receive a monetary gift. He chose Courage Center.
Each year Eaton Electrical Group – the division Moss works for – collects gifts for a nonprofit in the Twin Cities. As the Stover Award recipient, Moss was allowed to pick the nonprofit to benefit this year. Once again he chose Courage Center. Employees at his office donated toys for Courage Center pediatrics. Some will be given to clients while others will be used in the therapy area. Moss and his daughter delivered the donated gifts and toured Courage Center Dec. 20.

Schools FROM PAGE 1 Board member Chuck Mueller presented those considerations in two motions, along with other motions he presented that night. The other motions involved the use of federal stimulus funds and outreach programs for Forest Hills Elementary, Prairie View Elementary and Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion.
School Choice options The School Board moved along to approve a motion to have the administration consider adding “choice” classrooms to the K-6 schools they reaffirmed earlier that night. The choice program could be any specialized classroom curriculum, but would most likely be STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). There were four options outlined in the administration’s 123-page report (page 50) that served as a response to the School Board’s Nov. 23 request for more details behind the K-6 planning. That report was released before a Dec. 14 meeting.
On Dec. 21, the School Board voted to limit those options from four to two options for the administration to select for implementation. The School Board voted to limit the administration’s options to B and C in the report. Based on the information presented on page 50 of the report: Option B is a controlled choice option that will allow 4th and 5th graders the option to stay in the current boundary (if there’s space), but the district will not pay for transportation. An enrollment lottery system could be used if demand is high Option B would also put a fourthand fifth-grade choice program trial at the Oak Point building. There will be 46 pilot classrooms, and fourth and fifth graders district-wide have the option of enrolling in the program. The School District would pay for transportation to the choice school pilot, and registration would be controlled to help integrate classrooms. A lottery could also be used in the choice pilot program if needed. Option C would create 2-4 “choice” programs at each elementary school. The school district would not pay for transportation for students enrolled in the choice programs, and enroll-
ment would also be controlled to help integrate classrooms. The two options the School Board took off the table for the administration’s consideration were options A and D. Option A essentially would mean moving forward with K-6 without school or program options. Option D would allow any student the option to stay in their current boundary school, but that choice would be subject to schools’ space and integration control. The district would also not pay for transportation. The approval for either B or C came with a 4-3 vote. School Boardmembers Ranee Jacobus, Holly Parker and John Estall voted against it. Jacobus said she wanted a month to vet the four options, getting more details about transportation and enrollment before the School Board would decide in January. Estall said he was having a tough time considering options given the limited information they’ve been given about the options. Parker said she wanted all four options to be on the table. There were too many questions to limit the options down to two, she said. Mueller, who presented the motion, said he felt the four options were vetted
21
by the administration and that’s why he brought the motion forward that night. Superintendent Melissa Krull said any of the four options could be enacted without delaying the K-6 transition or affecting a new elementary school boundary map. A draft boundary map was released in early October, but the administration has said it expects to make changes to it. The motion also required a new boundary map be released by Jan. 15.
K-5 option Mueller also presented a motion to create a 90-day, joint School Board and administrative task force is created to consider a K-5 option instead of a K-6 option. Since the existing elementary schools will be K-5 in the 2010-2011 school year, as part of the transition to K-6, Mueller said he wanted to take the opportunity to look into the K-5 option. Jacobus, Parker and Estall had concerns about considering only one alternative option to K-6 after the K-6 decision just re-affirmed. SCHOOLS: TO PAGE 22

Parker said considering only this alternative option after the K-6 decision wouldn’t be right. “I can’t even imagine how confusing and ridiculous this would look to the community. … That alone from a credibility standpoint hurts us a lot,” Parker said. She also said the enrollment and capacity numbers would probably not add up to make K-5 a viable option to implement by 2012.

“If we’re gonna look at other options, we ought to look at other options. … Either we’re in K-6 or we’re not.” The motion to consider a K-5 option was voted down, with four board members voting against it. Mueller and Board members Carol Bomben and Ross voted for it. Boardmember Suzanne Kutina said she voted against it out of respect for those who said, we made a decision, and we should stick to it.

Boardmember Kim Ross said she thought the board was behind the K-6 decision since February, and the Dec. 21 vote reaffirmed that, and the K-5 model has the same fundamental characteristics as K-6, which would make K-5 a viable option. Estall said it shouldn’t be about picking and choosing options. If other options were considered, then all of them should have been considered.

NOTEBOOK BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie split a pair of girls hockey games heading into its holiday tournament. The Eagles came through with a 3-2 overtime win over Blaine Dec. 23 at Fogerty Arena and improved their overall record to 8-2-2. Eden Prairie, ranked ninth among state Class AA teams, had a two-goal performance from Allie LaCombe. Karissa Olsen scored the other Eagle goal. However, the Eagles were on the other side of a 3-2 decision Dec. 21 while losing to Chaska/Chanhassen. LaCombe continued her steady scoring pace by contributing two goals. Assists went to Tess Roehl, Peluso and Lauren McMahon. Goalie Johnson made 28 saves. LaCombe is Eden Prairie’s leading scorer with 29 points on 20 goals and nine assists in 12 games. McMahon ranks second on the Eagle scoring chart with six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. Olsen and Peluso have nine points apiece. Eden Prairie will try to knock off the state’s top-ranked team, Minnetonka, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Eden Prairie Community Center Arena.

Boys basketball Eden Prairie connected for 49 second-half points to erase a 33-24 deficit and came back to claim a 73-66 boys basketball triumph over Lakeville North Dec. 21.
“I was pleased with our second-half effort against Lakeville North,” said Eden Prairie head coach David Flom. “We fought back from that halftime deficit and showed grit. “Our offense is still a work in progress. But I have been pleased with our solid defensive play and rebounding.” Eden Prairie, 4-1 overall, used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Lakeville North. Four Eagle players scored in double figures including Conner Nord (20), Grant Soderberg (18), Dylan Stewart (17) and Jacob Foss (10). EPHS hosts Shakopee at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4. EP swimmers Holy Angels’ Laura Margarit claim invite surpasses 1,000 career points senior guard meet honors Bloomington headed to U of St. Thomas BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie boys swimming squad displayed its depth by winning the Karol Carlson Invitational title Dec. 18 in Maple Grove. The six-team meet consisted of five heats per event. And Eagle swimmers performed well in most of those heats. Eden Prairie clinched the team championship with 197 points. Edina was second (177.5) and Maple Grove finished third (132). Mounds View, Wayzata and Burnsville were other teams entered in the invitational. “This was a fun meet and depth had a lot to do with our success,” said Eden Prairie head coach Kelly Boston. “We tried to win as many heats as possible and had a lot of good performances.” Eden Prairie’s 400-yard freestyle relay won the top heat with a time of 3 minutes, 18.52 seconds. Members of that relay included senior Mathew Harris, sophomore Bryce Boston, senior Evan Griffith and junior Maverick Hovey. Hovey attained top honors in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.71 seconds. He added another flight win in the 200 individual medley (1:58.52). Boston was victorious in the 100 butterfly (53.49). Sophomore Michael Solfelt finished second in his 100 freestyle flight (49.83). Eden Prairie’s 200 freestyle relay placed second in the first flight (1:34.55). Members of that relay were Griffith, Harris, junior Bilal Ahmad and Solfelt. Eden Prairie’s winning 200 medley relay team placed first (1:40.66). Boston, sophomore William Wu, Hovey and Solfelt were members of that unit. Eden Prairie’s senior tri-captains are Jonathan Young, Harris and Griffith. Eden Prairie finished fourth at state a year ago. “Our goal is to finish in the top three places at state this season,” said Boston. “We have a lot of talent returning off last year’s team including a strong sophomore class.” Eagle swimmers will participate in the Maroon and Gold Meet at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Eden Prairie will compete in its first dual meet Friday, Jan. 14, against Edina at Art Downey Aquatic Center.
next basketball season BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS It is not surprising that Bloomington native Laura Margarit has achieved athletic success in both basketball and tennis at Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield. Marg arit comes from a family of talented athletes. Her older brothers both starred in football, basketball and baseball at Holy Angels before going on to excel in football at the University of St. Thomas. Tony Margarit graduated in 2009 Bloomington resident from St. Thomas Laura Margarit has after playing achieved a high school wide receiver for basketball career milethe Tommies. stone of 1,000 points Ricky Margarit scored in four seasons for was a junior wide the Academy of Holy receiver on the Angels team in Richfield. Tommies’ football (Submitted photo) squad this past season that finished with a 12-1 record and No. 7 ranking among national Division III teams. Laura’s mother, Julie, was a standout basketball player at St. Thomas. Dad Greg played sports at Holy Angels before attending St. Thomas. Laura has established a successful athletic identity for herself as well at Holy Angels. The senior lettered three seasons in tennis and earned All-Missota Conference honors this past fall season. But her favorite sport is basketball. Margarit has been a four-year letter winner in that sport and surpassed the prep careerscoring milestone of 1,000 points during a 48-38 victory over Burnsville Dec. 14. Margarit scored only four points, 12 below her season average, but felt honored to be recognized for her achievement. “After I scored my 1,000th point, they stopped the game and presented me with flowers and the game ball,” said Margarit. “I was congratulated by my coaches and teammates.
“It was a really fun night despite our loss.” Holy Angels head coach Nathan McGuire has nothing but praise for his star senior player. “Laura is an invaluable part of our team,” said the Stars coach. “Scoring is only one facet of her complete game. “She is among the leaders on our team in rebounding and assists as well as scoring. “Defensively, she is expected to guard the other team’s best player and consistently rises to the challenge,” added McGuire.
Difficult milestone The Holy Angels coach commented on just how difficult it is to score 1,000 points during a high school career. “Scoring 1,000 points is a milestone that not many people are talented or driven enough to achieve,” said McGuire. “It takes a special player to reach such a level in her career. “The milestone represents a lot of hard work and year-round effort on Laura’s part. She sets a good example for her teammates. “The all-conference and all-state honorable mention awards she received last year are sure to be repeated this year,” concluded the Holy Angels coach. Laura plans to follow the rest of the Margarit clan and attend the University of St. Thomas next school year. “There wasn’t really much of a question of where I would attend college,” said Margarit. “I grew up spending a lot of time on that campus. “St. Thomas has great facilities, and I wanted to stay close to home and play in a competitive basketball program.” Margarit’s immediate goal is to help the Stars improve on their present 3-4 record. Burnsville defeated Holy Angels 48-38 Dec. 14. Elizabeth Lecy led the Stars’ offense with 23 points. Margarit, Mary Duffy and Evan Wise scored four points each. Three Holy Angels players scored in double figures during a 60-51 triumph over Minneapolis Southwest Dec. 8. Those leading Stars scorers were Margarit (18), Callie Hogan (15) and Lecy (11). Margarit netted 21 points during a 6551 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret’ s Dec. 10. Lecy added 13 points. Holy Angels defeated Holy Family 5140 Dec. 2. Margarit scored 16 points and Lecy finished with 14. Hogan netted nine points.

Girls basketball Another Eden Prairie basketball squad displayed an impressive balanced scoring attack while notching another win last week. The Eagle girls basketball squad had six players score in double figures as it routed Stillwater 88-28 Dec. 21. Jackie Johnson attained Eagle scoring honors with 20 points. Shayne Mullaney had 16 points. Other leading Eden Prairie scorers were Aubrey Davis (12), Taylor Uhl (11), Morgan Van Riper-Rose (11) and Cassie Saxton (10). Eden Prairie, 7-1 overall, is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A. The Eagles will meet another ranked team, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8. The Red Knights are rated sixth among state Class 3A squads.
SHORTS Eagle All-State selections Three Eden Prairie High School football players were selected to the Associated Press 2010 All-State football team. Senior offensive lineman T.J. Woodrow and senior defensive back Grayson Levine were first-team selections. Junior running back Andrew Larson was named to the second team.
Bud Moss is honored Eden Prairie resident Bud Moss has been awarded a Stover Volunteerism Award for community service. His employer, Eaton Corporation, presented him with the honor. Moss has been a Courage Center ski volunteer at Hyland Ski and Snowboard Area in Bloomington since 2006. Moss chose Courage Center as his designated non-profit organization. Eaton employees donated toys for Courage Center pediatrics in his honor.
Figure skating shows Eden Prairie Figure Skating Club (EPFSC) will be involved in several upcoming events. Local skaters are preparing for the 31st annual Northland Competition in Duluth during January. EPFSC will present its annual ice show “The Little Mermaid” March 25-27 at Eden Prairie Community Center Arena. Registration deadline for the EPFSC is Dec. 11.
