The 2010 U.S. Census has pointed out a few holes in the Eden Prairie housing landscape. Well, more than a thousand holes, actually. The number of vacant housing units in Eden Prairie has doubled since 2000, according to the U.S. Census. The number of new housing units also increased since 2000, but given a housing market bubble burst and start of the Great Recession shortly after in 2008, the vacancy rate accelerated quicker than new units. Those numbers are based on occupancy statistics measured in the 2010 census, compared to the 2000 census. That occupancy rate measurement includes single-

family homes, apartment complexes, town homes and other rental or owned housing units. Given there was also an increase in the total number of housing units created, the percentage of vacant residences compared to occupied went from 2.7 percent in 2000 to 4.6 percent in 2010. 6.938

Richardson found mentally incompetent at time of son’s death BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS With family and supporters watching, a Hennepin County judge stated a third assessment found that an Eden Prairie man was mentally unstable at the time of his 6-month-old son’s death. Hennepin County Judge Mark Wernick is expected to make a verdict April 28 regarding a first-degree murder charge against Randel Richardson, 36, of Eden Prairie, who is accused of drowning his infant son last July. In a hearing Monday, April 11, Judge Wernick said the third assessment, conducted by a state psychologist, concurs with a court-ordered assessment and an assessment from the defense. Since all three reviews found him mentally unstable at the time of the murder, defense attorneys Anthony Edwards and Isabel Gomez will corroborate case facts with Assistant County Attorney Deborah Russell.

‘Reader’s Digest’ swings by area cities to hand off mini ‘stimulus packages’ BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS “Reader’s Digest” is rolling into three area cities to hand out some checks to their mayors. Three “ambassadors” from the publication are RV traveling to 100 cities across the country in 100 days as part of its, “We hear you America,” campaign. Along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, they are also rolling into Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka, where they’ll hand out $1,000 checks that the city can use as it wishes. Supermodel and “Celebrity Apprentice” reality television contestant Niki Taylor will join the “Reader’s Digest” in larger cities on the tour, including Minneapolis. The RV was scheduled to arrive in Bloomington April 10, in Eden Prairie April 13 and Minnetonka April 14. The campaign started in November with online voting, where U.S. citizens

could “cheer” or vote for their city as the best. “Vote early and often” rings true for this contest, since people can vote for their city online up to 10 times per day. Such freedom may have helped boost the total vote count reach 13 million. The ten cities with the most votes receive a delivered check – $40,000 for the top-voted city, $25,000 for the runnerup and up to $10,000 for the other eight. Prize delivery to the top ten cities, along with 90 other cities that will receive a $1,000 check, began in January. All of the Minnesota cities on the tour stop were not in the top ten, but picked among the 90 cities added to the list. Jay Ramos, one of the three “Reader’s Digest” reps traveling crosscountry, said the campaign isn’t about boosting the publication’s circulation. Those 90 cities were chosen based the stories that people submitted as part of the “We Hear You America”

campaign and if the cities were included in a couple of the periodical’s special publications in addition to the online voting. “I can’t speak to specificity of [circulation], but the choice of the cities are not based on readership numbers,” Ramos said. “It’s due to the three components.” Ramos said when they stop at a city, they usually meet with community officials and curious residents. The RV’s public reception has varied at each city, he said. Those that received more votes online tend to have a few more visitors than cities that received fewer votes. With the seeming popularity of the campaign, “Reader’s Digest” has decided to start another round of voting, which runs March 8 to May 16, with another $145,000 in prizes for the top ten cities. Transportation focus of April 8 TwinWest breakfast BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS The title of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce’s April 8 legislative breakfast was “The Future of Transportation and Transit Funding.â€? Though the future was discussed, much of the talk focused on the current state of transportation funding at the federal and state levels – or the lack of it. “In transportation, we can’t rely too much on one revenue source,â€? said panelist Margaret Donahoe, executive director of the Minnesota Transportation Alliance. “None of the revenue sources are keeping up and our roads are aging.â€? Rep. Mike Beard, R-Shakopee, Rep. Linda Runbeck, R-Circle Pines, and Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison were the other members of the panel at the breakfast, held at the Doubletree Hotel Minneapolis Park Place in St. Louis Park. At the federal level, pretty much all funding for transportation projects comes from a federal gas tax, Donahoe said. Since gas prices have shot up, people have been using less, which has led to a loss in revenue. At the state level, Minnesota also needs to look at finding additional funding sources for transportation, she said. The state has a gas tax of its own, which does fund transportation, but Minnesota might do better with a tax on “vehicle miles traveled,â€? she said, as opposed to gallons of gas purchased. Beard, chair of the House Transportation Policy and Finance committee, said there was a provision in the House’s proposed transportation bill that would create a pilot program for a mileage-based user fee system. With the state facing a funding crisis, he said, government has to get creative. “There will be some new processes that will change the look of (transportation) funding going forward,â€? Beard said. The panelists were asked if the Legislature would approve a bonding bill this session that would include transportation projects, even though it’s not officially a bonding year. Runbeck, chair of the House Property and Local Tax Division committee, and Callison both spoke in favor of the prospect. “A bonding bill might be one of the end pieces in negotiations,â€? Runbeck said. “It’s a viable approach to take – it’s an additional source of funding for roads.â€? One issue the two didn’t agree on was

the importance of the Southwest Transitway, which would bring lightrail transit to the west metro. With the large budget deficit, Runbeck said, legislators must prioritize what transportation projects they want to address. The state shouldn’t be sinking billions into light-rail transit while its roads and infrastructure are deteriorating, she said. Callison disagreed, lamenting that Minnesota has been spending three times as much on roads and bridges than it has on light rail. With the Southwest Transitway poised to enter the preliminary engineering phase, it will receive a 50 percent federal funding match. But if the Legislature takes away the state’s portion of the light-rail funding for other uses, the Southwest Transitway will move to the back of the line for federal funding. Meanwhile, Callison said, the cost of the project will go up due to inflating construction costs. The southwest metro is a job-rich area, she said, and the light-rail transit way would link the area with downtown. “It’s important for those employers to have a reliable source of transportation, she said. She added that the metro area’s population will grow by 600,000 by 2030 and that the roads are already too congested with the current population. “We need a long-term vision for this area, Callison said. Estimates show the state will need $19 billion over the next 20 years just to keep up with maintenance and safety needs on its current roads, Donahoe said. At current funding levels, about $15 billion is set to go to these areas in that time frame. Therefore, the state doesn’t have enough funding to address regular upkeep of its roads in the long term, she said, much less take on new construction projects. Minnesota has about $900 million in construction projects slated for 2011, down from $1.3 billion in 2010.

Life’s hidden rhythm BY PASTOR DARRIN GEIER GUEST COLUMNIST I was thinking the other day about how great spring in Minnesota is. I think it’s safe to say that for most of us, even though we are supposedly a “hardy people,” we get quite enough of winter’s chill. By this time each year, we do all we can to pull spring into bloom. We get giddy at the sight of a robin in the backyard. We begin to entertain the thought of

pulling the grill out of storage. The winter coats get moved to the back of the closet. Some of us are even so bold as to consider 40 degrees as warm enough for shorts and flip-flops! And, the familiar looking people hanging out around the houses near ours, we realize, are our neighbors. And while we haven’t seen them in months, we soon remember what it’s like to share a conversation across the fence. Each year, when winter’s grip loosens, in a sort of real way, we become more alive. And why

It’s incredible to think that the dormant earth resuscitates like this year after year, reminding us of life’s hidden rhythm. not? The earth around us is quite literally coming to life itself. And how amazing of a miracle is that! Flowers springing up from the once uninhabitable, frozen ground. Buds fighting their way through tips of tree branches. Grass assuming its green brilliance once again. It’s incredible to think that the dormant earth

resuscitates like this year after year, reminding us of life’s hidden rhythm. All of this reminds me of God, the composer of the rhythm. And what he shows us through the change of seasons can be seen everywhere we look; GEIER: TO PAGE 7

Raingardens flowering across the West Metro BY GEOFF NASH • GUEST COLUMNIST “Raingarden” is a term that has been — pardon the pun — floating around for years, but it can be confusing term. What is a raingarden? How do you plant one? Is it hard to plant one? Is it expensive? And why plant one in the first place? West metro residents can learn the answers to these and other questions at upcoming workshops co-sponsored by the nonprofit Metro Blooms, along with the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission, other watersheds and several west Metro cities. One thing the workshops will do is define what a raingarden is not: It’s not a garden filled with standing water, otherwise known as a mosquito haven. To the contrary, they’re designed to soak up and filter rainwater, just as nature intended. By diverting rainwater into a raingarden through well-placed downspouts and other measures, you can help solve drainage issues in your yard — the dreaded wet basement, for example and even icy sidewalks in the winter.

Workshops and plant sale • April 14: 6 p.m. at Meadow Lake Elementary, 8525 62nd Ave. North, Crystal May 12: 6 p.m. at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, 15600 Old Rockford Road, Plymouth. May 17 and May 26: 6:30 p.m. at Benilde-St. Margaret School, 2501 Hwy. 100 S., St. Louis Park May 28, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Native plant sale, St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, Plymouth. The combined workshops cost $15; the two-part workshop (St. Louis Park) is $10 per session. To register for these or other nearby events, go to metroblooms.org and click on “Raingarden Workshops” or call 651-699-2426.

Raingardens can also significantly reduce run-off — the water that drips off the roof or through the downspout down the driveway, and into the storm sewers — along with all the pollutants, natural and man-made, that it collects along the way. That helps ensure that our lakes and rivers have clear, healthy waters that are great for swimming, boating, and aquatic life (we’re talking to you, avid anglers). They can also simply be beautiful. The goal of the workshops is

for attendees to leave with a practical general plan for a raingarden, says Becky Rice, Metro Blooms executive director. The basic information is presented in an easy-to-understand discussion-lecture format; then attendees can do more hands-on work with a sketch of their property, where workshop leaders help them with basic rules for siting and plant selection. And don’t worry if you have problems like “challenging” soil (heavy, compacted clay) — leaders can help with that and other issues.

After the workshop, attendees can schedule an on-site consultation with one of Metro Blooms’ experts to get a detailed plan tailored for their yard. If they’re looking for more guidance, they can also request a raingarden design from landscape designers — “and you should see some of their designs,” says Rice. “They’re absolutely gorgeous.” Each service costs $60. Planting in a raingarden does require a lot of digging, Rice notes, so do-it-yourselfers should be ready to roll up their sleeves — but it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money; you can use common perennials you may already have in your yard or can get from neighbors or at a plant swap. There will also be a native plant sale at St. Barnabas church in Plymouth at the end of May. With the long winter finally receding and the gardening season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to learn how to plant your own raingarden, for a more home- and eco-friendly yard. Nash is the administrator of Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission.

House approves bill that will give back variance authority BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Minnesota cities and counties may soon regain the authority to grant variances in the way they did for years prior to a recent Supreme Court decision. The Minnesota House approved a bill April 4 that will allow local governments greater latitude to grant zoning variances. The League of Minnesota Cities and a group of allies lobbied for the measure to address the fallout from the lawsuit. A decision handed down by the Minnesota Supreme Court in July 2010 Krummenacher v. City of Minnetonka changed the landscape for variances. In that case, the court ruled, “a municipality does not have the authority to grant a variance unless the applicant can show that her property cannot be put to a reasonable use without the variance.” That differed greatly from a 1989

Geier

decision that stated a variance could be granted if property owners “would like to use the property in a ‘reasonable manner’ that is prohibited by the ordinance.” In effect, the 2010 decision made it next to impossible for cities and townships to grant variances, except in rare circumstances. “The Krummenacher case actually took what was in practice here for a number of years in the state of Minnesota and made it illegal,” said Rep. Tim O’Driscoll, R-Sartell. He estimated that $45 million in construction projects in Minnesota were being held up because of the decision. The House bill is designed to clarify the current law so that cities and counties can use the standards that had been in place for decades prior to last year’s decision. The bill was amended in the committee process – over the objection of the League of Minnesota Cities – to leave

If approved, the new law would “finally clear statutory variance authority to cities,” according to a statement from the League. Rep. Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley, did not vote for the House version of the bill – due to the language discrepancies between cities and counties – but is optimistic the Legislature will approve an adequate bill. He believes variances became an issue because the Minnesota Supreme Court in recent years has based its decisions less on intent and common sense interpretation of law. “The Minnesota Supreme Court has changed over the years,” Winkler said. “It’s become very literal in how it interprets language.” The bill won’t make variances impervious to future litigation, he said, but it should do a good job of bringing back the standards cities and counties have used for years.

FROM PAGE 6 things dormant, becoming revived, things dead, coming to life. I believe none of this is a coincidence. Death giving way to life is a thread woven deeply throughout the fabric of creation. And, it was a part of God’s ultimate remedy to heal our world of its brokenness. God, sending Jesus to live, then die, and then rise to new life again; this is a miracle in its most true sense. In the Bible, in the book of Romans, we’re reminded “just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” (Chapter 6, verse 4). This is truly good news! Geier is the Director of Youth Ministries at Eden Prairie Presbyterian Church.

the language for how and when conditions may be imposed as part of a variance in different forms for counties and cities. Because of the differences, the League opposed the legislation as it appeared on the House floor. However, an agreement was reached when the bill came up for discussion to resolve those differences with matching language for cities and counties. That agreement was not drafted into amendment fast enough to make it into the House bill. But legislators made it clear a compromise had been agreed to and would be included in the bill when it came back from the Senate, according to the League. The League expects that a companion bill, sponsored by Sen. Gen Olson, R-Minnetrista, will move through the Senate quickly and that Gov. Mark Dayton would sign the final bill. It had not been signed by the time this edition of the Sun-Current went to press.

Family owned and operated for over 150 years, Washburn-McReavy is committed to providing you and your family with caring and professional funeral services.

Loon will meet with attendees in the small conference room of the Eden Prairie Library, 565 Prairie Center Dr., Eden Prairie. “It is important to me to remain connected and available to the folks of District 42B as we make our way through the legislative session,” Loon said in a statement. “We are working to put our state on a better path and input I receive from local citizens is a key part of the process. These meetings will be a good chance for community members to share their thoughts on the issues.” Reservations are not required in order to participate in Legislator at Your Library and meetings with Loon can be set up for small groups or one-on-one. “Much of the focus these days is on balancing the state budget, and growing jobs and our economy, but there are any number of important issues that citizens might like to discuss with their Representative,” Loon said. “I look forward to hearing from community members about any topic of interest or concern during these meetings.” People wishing to make an appointment for a specific time during the listening session may do so by calling Loon’s office. Bloomington woman strives to maintain the life she knew BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER Nine months after receiving a heart transplant, Vicki Peterson finished a triathlon. She biked 10.2 miles, swam 400 yards and ran 2.5 miles to end the race in two hours. She was the last person to cross the finish line at the 2008 Minnewaska Triathlon in Glenwood, Minn. A group of family and friends cheered her on. “I wanted my life back, the way it was,” said Peterson, 54. “It was something for me to focus on during my recovery.” After surgeons replaced her failing heart with a healthy one from an anonymous donor in 2007, Peterson decided to enjoy her new lease on life. Since transplant surgery more than three years ago, the Bloomington resident returned to her job as a flight attendant for Sun Country Airlines. She has travelled to California, Florida, Sweden and Italy and enjoys sports like kayaking and biking with her husband Brian and three adult sons, Nathan, Blake and Brandon.

Peterson is grateful for the gift of life, though she’s never met the family of the donor whose heart beats in her chest. “The way I live is really to honor them and be respectful of what they did, give this gift to me and I need to respect that,” she said. “I want to work out, I want to eat healthy, I want to give back wherever I can, just out of respect for them.” April is National Donate Life Month and Peterson hopes her story will inspire others to register as organ donors. More than half of Minnesota residents have registered as organ donors through their driver’s licenses or state ID cards, said Rebecca Ousley, senior public relations coordinator at LifeSource, a nonprofit that manages organ and tissue donations in the upper Midwest. About 2,700 Minnesotans are waiting for organ transplants, or 110,000 nationally, she said. Every day, 18 Americans die waiting for a transplant. A 2005 health scare started Peterson’s transplant story. She fainted while workHEART: TO PAGE 24

Heart FROM PAGE 17 ing on a Sun Country flight and gashed her head on a cart lock, requiring a trip to an emergency room. Over the next eight days she lost consciousness up to 12 times a day. Searching for answers, Peterson visited several doctors and endured a battery of medical tests. Doctors couldn’t pinpoint the problem until a cardiologist reviewing electrocardiogram results recommended immediate surgery for an ICD, or implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Eight days later, the mechanical device was implanted in her chest to regulate her heartbeat. Peterson later returned to work and resumed her normal activities, but by

June 2006, she constantly felt tired and drained of energy. “Before the transplant, it got to the point where I was crawling up stairs or if I got on the floor, I couldn’t get up by myself,” she said. “Somebody had to help me with everything.” In September 2006, doctors told her that her heart was working at only 20percent capacity and recommended an appointment with a heart transplant specialist. She sought a second opinion from the University of Minnesota, where doctors confirmed that a transplant was her only option and diagnosed her with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease. Her name was placed on a heart transplant list and began rounds of testing and treatments designed to prevent her immune system from rejecting a transplanted heart. By September 2007 her condition had deteriorated so badly

that she was hospitalized until a donor heart could be found. Two weeks later, a donor match was found. Three days after the October 2007 surgery her body began to reject the transplant, but a series of drug treatments and transfusions improved the symptoms. After leaving the hospital, check-ups were once a week. She eventually felt well enough to return to work, beginning with a desk job in February 2008. Doctors had said that she could never return to her old flight attendant job because of the possibility of infections in a closed cabin, but she pestered her doctors for permission to return to work. They reluctantly agreed, and by July 2009 she began flying again. “I just didn’t see myself doing anything else,” Peterson said. “I’ve been doing this for 16 years and I love what I do and I love the people that I work

with.” Peterson has always been strongwilled and resilient, said her friend Denise Engberg of Burnsville, who’s known Peterson since the 1970s. “Telling Vicki what she should be doing is like waving a red flag in front of her, like a bull,” Engberg said. “If you tell her she shouldn’t be doing something, she’s going to somehow try to find a way to do it.” Statistics show that average life expectancy for heart transplant recipients is 8-10 years, but Peterson plans to beat the odds. “I have lots of things on my ‘bucket list’ that I haven’t accomplished yet,” she said. “I want to work on that bucket list. I don’t want to miss any opportunities.“ For more information about organ and tissue donation, contact LifeSource at 651-603-7800 or DonateLifeMN.org.

Those facts will then be sent to Judge Wernick, which he will use to make a verdict during an April 28 trial. Richardson could be found guilty of murder or a lesser charge, Edwards said, but the case facts will include the three assessments, which conclude Richardson did not know what he was doing and that it was wrong. If Richardson is acquitted of the murder, Edwards said, he will most likely undergo a 60-day review at a secure treatment facility, The Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter, Minn., to determine if he is dangerous and should be admitted to the facility. According to a criminal complaint with the murder charge, after talking on the phone with his wife July 31 of last year, Richardson “submerged” and held his son down in a basement laundry tub until he stopped struggling. Edwards said Richardson had no prior convictions or incidence of violence in his background “This is an extraordinary rare thing,” Edwards said. “It’s just a tragic situation.” The trial has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m., April 28, at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. Sixth St., Minneapolis.

These numbers don’t come as a surprise to some city officials and an area mortgage lender. “I wouldn’t say they’re inordinate at all,” said Molly Koivumaki of the city’s Housing and Community Service Department. “We always take a look at what the trends are to help adjust our programs if we need to.” Koivumaki said in the city’s Comprehensive Guide plan, as of 2006, the city had 24,848 total housing units in Eden Prairie, and not much development has occurred since then. As of 2007, there were approximately 6,500 rental units in the city. Fire Inspector Rick Hamerschmidt, who is in charge of inspecting rental properties, said there are approximately 600 single-family homes licensed as rentals. Hamerschmidt also estimated there could be between 100-200 homes being rented that are unregistered. Since 2008, it seems more people are opting to rent out their home rather than sell it, since home values have dropped so significantly, Hamerschmidt said. “I think a lot of people are renting because if they sold their home they’d lose money. … In the last couple years, definitely the amount of people renting their homes [has] gone up,” Hamerschmidt said. And, like many cities in the metro and

around the country, foreclosures skyrocketed over the past couple of years. Foreclosures in Eden Prairie have increased 589 percent in the last four years, said Patricia Fenrick of the Eden Prairie’s Housing and Human Services Department during a recent meeting. Kathy Harrison, a branch manager and loan officer for Bell Mortgage, said the days of low down payments and the ease of getting a loan – small house down payment requirements and sometimes little or no credit verification whatsoever – are “pretty much gone.” Lenders and government agencies are becoming more conservative, she said, requiring better credit scores, more traditional down payment amounts and other more strict requirements than a few years ago. And, people are adjusting. “What you’re seeing more now is people coming in for counseling,” she said, to prepare for buying a home. The city of Eden Prairie is also looking to help house shoppers – who are already approved for a loan – to get a foot through their first owned front door. The First Time Homebuyer program was approved last month, and it could provide up to a $25,000 interest-free loan to assist with a home purchase, including the down payment. Koivumaki said the city immediately received 17 inquiries about the program and one filled application. The city hopes to assist five homebuyers with its program, she said. Info: edenprairie.org.

Eagles are primed for another run at state girls lacrosse title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie and Blake dominated the first four Minnesota State High School League-sponsored girls lacrosse tournaments. The Eagles were state champions in 2007 and 2009 while the Bears won titles in 2008 and 2010. Blake edged Eden Prairie 11-10 in the state title game last spring. Eden Prairie, 17-2 last year, is one of the pre-season favorites to return to the state tournament with nine of 18 players back. “We lost all our top attackers from last year’s team, but we will move people around to fill those holes,” said Eden Prairie co-head coach Beth Patterson. “This team has plenty of speed and agility. Most of our returnees are experienced seniors.” The Eagle coach realizes it is becoming more difficult for her program to stay on top. “The state has 62 girls lacrosse teams competing this season,” said Patterson. “Competition keeps getting better, but that is fun to see.” Eden Prairie will rely heavily on five captains – junior midfielder Christine Easton, senior defender Riley Allen, senior midfielder Taylor Uhl, senior attack Ciera Stifel and senior defender Kelly Crampton. The captains are talented all-around athletes. Allen is headed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth on a

soccer scholarship. She was an all-state girls lacrosse selection last season. Easton has committed to attend Ohio State University on a lacrosse scholarship after she graduates in another year. She was an all-state pick a year ago. Uhl will attend the University of Minnesota on a soccer scholarship next fall. She received Minnesota’s Ms. Soccer award after her senior season. Eden Prairie has a seasoned goalie back. Sophomore McKenzie Johnson has been a starter since eighth grade. Eden Prairie varsity forward candidates are Anna Johnson, Greta Colford, Haylie Honn, Stifel and Marit Nelson. Eden Prairie midfielders are Heather Honn, Michelle Jamar, Emma Claire Fontenot, Annie Thul, Carley Tibbetts, Easton, Uhl and Arika Skoog. Defenders are Morgan Oie, Allen and Crampton. Eden Prairie will play a 13-game regular-season schedule. The Eagles were to play Burnsville April 13 in the season opener. Eden Prairie will travel to Lakeville North at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14. The Eagles meet visiting Wayzata at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 18. Eden Prairie’s Riley Allen keeps the ball away from a Blake defender during the 2010 state girls lacrosse championship game. The Eagles were runners-up after their 11-10 loss. Allen is one of five Eagle senior captains this spring. (Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer)

Eden Prairie Eagles primed to defend state boys tennis title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie returns a majority of its varsity lineup from last year’s state championship boys tennis squad. The Eagles claimed Lake Conference and section titles before advancing to the state Class AA tournament. Eden Prairie defeated Eagan 6-1 in the finals.

Eagle coach Dean Rudrud has high expectations for his 2011 team. “We should be very competitive again with seven players back from our state championship team,” said Rudrud. “But we can’t dwell on what we did in the past and must focus on working hard this season.” Eden Prairie’s captains are junior

Scott Elsaas, senior Michael Chen and senior Yiding Hou. Elsaas is one of the state’s top-ranked singles players. He placed third at state as a sophomore. Other Eden Prairie state tourney veterans are sophomore David Zhou, sophomore Salam Bachour, sophomore Sam Doudd and junior Calvin Gu.

Eden Prairie will host Shakopee in a 4 p.m. non-conference match Thursday, April 14, at Round Lake Park tennis courts. The Eagles take to the road for a conference match against Wayzata at 4 p.m. Monday, April 18. Eden Prairie will host Bloomington Jefferson at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

Hungry Eagles regroup for run at state boys lacrosse crown Eden Prairie will rely on senior leadership to gain state berth

‘Our maturity level is higher with so many seniors on the squad. We should have good depth and scoring punch.’

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie’s boys lacrosse squad was disappointed with its early exit in the playoffs a year ago. The Eagles were eliminated in the section semifinals. This season Eden Prairie is determined to go much farther in the postseason. “The guys are hungry to do better than we did last season,” said Eden Prairie head coach Ryan Ward. “Our maturity level is higher with so many seniors on the squad. We should have good depth and scoring punch.” Eden Prairie senior captains are Matt Hugdahl (attack), Mitch Hugdahl (midfielder), Davis Snyder (attack) and Bennett Johnson (defender). The Hugdahl twins are headed to college lacrosse. Matt will attend Wittenborg University in Ohio while Mitch will head to Georgetown University. area in Florida. “It was a great experience for our players,” said Ward. “We got in good practices and experienced team bonding.” Eden Prairie will rely on several experienced players besides its four captains. Senior Curt Rau is back at defense and senior Jared Klapperich returns in goal. Other senior varsity candidates are Brady Vandenberghe (defender), Justin Sickler (midfielder), Josh Sickler (defender), Patric Russell (midfielder), Erick Underwood (defender), Riley Boehm (midfielder) and Ben Wahlquist (defender). Eden Prairie will count on help from juniors such as Curtis Vaughan (defender), Davis Dalton (midfielder), Chris Moulton (attack), Dan Thayer (midfielder), Mitch Gavin (defender), Pat McFadden (midfielder), Alex Leivermann (midfielder), Connor Gnazzo (midfielder) and Chris Erickson (midfielder). Several sophomores are competing for varsity duty – Sam Gravelle (attack), Jake Woodring (midfielder), Anthony Perkins (goalie), Nick Moore (defender), Nic Bentz (midfielder) and Brooks Armitage (attack). Eden Prairie’s coaching staff includes Ward, Scott Hugdahl, Pat Shook and Stu Baxter.
