Addressing a couple questions about STEM in Eden Prairie BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS With five months to go before the next school year, the Eden Prairie School Board is expected to get an update April 12 about the pilot STEM program to roll out next fall. STEM, Science Technology Engineering and Math, is an integration of those four disciplines rather than sticking to one subject in a classroom period – instead of a math class purely dealing with numbers, it would integrate science, engineering and technology to create a more comprehensive understanding of how something works. The same idea would apply to a science class. The classroom work and teaching would incorporate math and engineering principals rather than sticking to scientific definitions or study. That’s one way Interim Director of Educational Services Marsha Baisch described the STEM concept. During a March 8 School Board meeting, she said STEM isn’t a program, but more about inquiry-based learning. She later defined inquiry-based learning as students analyzing problems, asking scientific questions, developing solutions and demonstrating their thought
Two of the questions brought up during the most recent, nearly two-hour long session: How should parents decide to sign up their fifth-grade child for STEM if they don’t feel they have enough information about it? And, what is the long-term rollout plan for STEM, after the sixth grade?
process, all of which would often happen through projects or other hands-on work, she said. Starting this fall, Eden Prairie Schools are looking to create a couple of choice, fifth-grade STEM classrooms at each of the elementary schools. These classrooms would incorporate the STEM principals in lieu of more traditional classroom teaching, Baisch said. There are a variety of approaches to teaching STEM, and there’s a lot of information about it in general, but since February, when the pilot program was announced for Eden Prairie, details about Eden Prairie Schools’ plans have yet to be
worked out. During a March 8 meeting, the plan for the elementary school classrooms was still in the early stages, and an update is expected during the April 12 School Board meeting. The STEM program was initially expected for fifth-graders at the four elementary schools and for sixth graders at Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion. Baisch had said there were concerns about overloading new fifth-grade teachers at Eagle Heights with STEM, so they planned on having it in sixth grade. Last month, it changed to fifth grade at Eagle Heights, as well. On April 3, Baisch
said they switched the plan to fifth grade because staff is working on a plan to get experienced teachers in fifth grade classrooms to alleviate that problem. That is also a work in progress, she said. So, starting in the fall, the optional STEM classrooms will be at the fifth grade only at all elementary schools. In 2012, the plan is to have them for fifth and sixth grade, Baisch said. Since it will be a “pilot” and optional program, the administration has been aiming to have two STEM classrooms at each elementary school, but Baisch said they will have to look at the interest level from parents, so that number isn’t definite Parents of current fourth grade students filled out a form due April 1 to indicate if they wanted to enroll their child in a STEM classroom for fifth grade. Baisch said they would begin reviewing those after spring break, which took place the week following that April 1 due date. However, since STEM details were still in the works before the April 1 due date, at least a few parents had questions and concerns during the March 24 Stakeholder session with four School Board members. Only School Board members talk with STEM: TO PAGE 18

Senate leader talks session with local businesses BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Between Senate approval of bills with cuts to higher education and health and human services spending, Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, R-Buffalo, addressed local business leaders. Koch spoke on her party’s efforts to close the budget deficit without raising taxes and other business-friendly measures at a joint meeting of the Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina and Richfield chambers of commerce Wednesday, March 30. Chamber members said so far they are pleased with direction of the current legislative session, now past the halfway point. “There’s plenty going on at the state that impacts all of us,” said Pat MulQueeny, Eden Prairie Chamber president, following the luncheon at the Edina Country Club. “Overall it’s been an aggressive approach trying to get things done early.” Koch said the current focus at the capital is balancing the state budget. This year, the Senate set its earliest budget target in history asking for budgKOCH: TO PAGE 13

EP resident appointed to MAC BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Last week, Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Eden Prairie resident Rick King to the Metropolitan Airports Commission. The MAC operates the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and six reliever airports in the Twin Cities metro area, including the Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie. King, chief technology officer for Thomson Reuters Professional, is among six people appointed to the fourteen-member MAC. For five years he served on and chaired the city of Eden Prairie’s Flying Cloud Airport Advisory Commission, which helped coordinate and direct community concerns regarding airport noise, a runway expansion and other airport changes. He will represent MAC District B, replacing Molly Sigel. “My issue is going to be to make sure we have a very vibrant hub airport to support growth in the economy and jobs, while at the same time pay attention to neighborhood issues like noise,” King said. King said the MAC commissioners are expected to represent Twin Cities residents, and with his MAC experience and
the mixed backgrounds of the other recent appointees (including a pilot) should serve the residents well. The other five appointees, according to the governor’s office: • Carl Crimmins, Champlin – president of the Minnesota Pipe Trades. He will replace Sherry Stenerson representing MAC District A. • James Deal, Ramsey – chairman of the Board of NAU Country Insurance. He will replace Andy Westerberg, representing MAC District E • Michael Madigan, Woodbury – attorney and managing partner of Madigan, Dahl & Harlan, P.A. He will replace Robert Nelson, representing MAC District F • Tammy Mencel, Eagan – president and publisher of the “Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.” She will replace Bert McKasy, representing MAC District H • Paul Rehkamp, Marshall – funeral home director and has served on the MAC since 1993. Reappointed to represent greater Minnesota. All appointments were effective as of March 28 and expire Jan. 5, 2015, with the exception of James Deal, who is serving out the remainder of Andy Westerberg’s term. His term expires Jan. 7, 2013. City Council members concerned about re-opening Flying Cloud Landfill wounds

BY RON CASE • GUEST COLUMNIST Like emotional wounds from our individual pasts, communities also share common scars that are easily reopened from our collective memories. One of the advantages of having three current Council members who were around back in the mid-90s is that all of us got our political feet wet during or soon after the crisis created by then BFI’s attempt to enlarge and extend the life of Eden Prairie’s very own landfill sitting precariously on the edge of the Minnesota River valley. When the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) came to our last Council workshop session with the proposal to consolidate the contents of a closed Hopkins landfill with Eden Prairie’s dormant site, they had done their homework well enough to know that the reception they received was cooler than cold. Knowing that back in 1989 the Council at the time had turned down an offer of $18 million to keep the landfill open for 4 additional years, I did ask a specific question, more of curiosity than from any belief that a deal was desirable, “What could possibly be in it for Eden Prairie to allow us to consider such a request?” Except for the distant and inadequate possibility of sharing in the proceeds from the sale of the restored Hopkins site, the answer was really, “Nothing.” A reader must now be legitimately asking, “What was the MPCA thinking?” Likely from their perspective, and knowing that they must spend millions of dollars opening both landfills up anyway for a minimum of 12 months to correct subterranean leaching and surface water collection, the MPCA was simply seeing region-
I want the people of Eden Prairie to know that every Council member at our last public workshop session expressed grave concerns with the MPCA’s proposal to move the Hopkins landfill into Eden Prairie.

Phuoc Thi Minh Tran, a librarian at Hennepin County’s Augsburg Park Library in Richfield finds special meaning in the theme of this year’s National Library Week April 10-16. (Submitted photo)
Nat’l Library Week April 10-16 al gains at Eden Prairie’s expense. As much as I get that, and speaking only from my own perspective, I find it improbable that this Council would ever seriously consider such a proposal and furthermore, our desire to represent the very best interests of the people of Eden Prairie dictates that we continue the fight to safeguard against any negative effects on people, property, and water quality created by one of the largest closed landfills in Minnesota. My hope is that we will work towards a day when it can be completely removed from our City limits. I want the people of Eden Prairie to know that every Council member at our last public workshop session expressed grave concerns with the MPCA’s proposal to move the Hopkins landfill into Eden Prairie. I for one deeply understand the angst and disbelief expressed by many residents over the last week and I can assure everyone that I believe it is entirely certain that Hopkins will continue for years to come to cope with the ill-effects of its own landfill as unfortunately, so shall we.
Case is an Eden Prairie City Council member.
BY PHUOC THI MINH TRAN GUEST COLUMNIST Do you know that the snail was the fastest animal in the world long ago? Or how an elderly loving couple in Japan survived winter with little food but big heart? As a librarian and a respected storyteller, I bring alive my favorite stories and tales from around the world at many cultural events for children and families. Today I love to introduce the 398.2 Section in public libraries, where folktales, fairy tales, fables and legends are located. The unique folktales collection is the one I hold most near and dear to my heart. My parents taught me how to live a virtuous life and do good deeds through oral stories. My grandparents used traditional folktales to teach moral lessons and to pass down values to the younger generation. Today I tell stories and Vietnamese folktales to engage my children to learn about Vietnam, its people, and culture through five virtues:
nhân (compassion), l? (rituals), ngh?a (righteousness), trí (wisdom) and tín (trust). My oldest daughter has said, “Before bed each night, my parents did not read ‘Good Night Moon’ to me. Instead, growing up, I would fall asleep to the story of a girl who would ride around on a giant turtle named Mimi and do good deeds.” Telling stories is a treasure shared. I feel so blessed to have the chance to tell stories each night to my children. I feel so lucky to have access to the beautiful collection of folktales from around the world at Hennepin County libraries. Many immigrant families have rooted their lives in America and around the world. While the first generation has strong connections with their heritage, a language and culture gap is widening between the elders and the younger generations. The rich folktale collection at the library can foster bonding LIBRARY: TO PAGE 10

Koch
Local chamber leaders said they are pleased with the current legislative session so far. Pictured (left to right): Bloomington Chamber Executive Director Maureen Scallen Failor, Sen. FROM PAGE 3 et bills to be through committee by March 25. Those bills, and their House companions, are now getting votes on the respective floors, something Koch said doesn’t usually until late April or May. That allows extra time for discussion as details are hammered out in conference committees before the bills are sent to Democratic-Farmer-Labor Gov. Mark Dayton’s desk, she said. The GOP-proposed budget does not increase taxes. Koch said the budget should fit within the state’s projected revenue of about $34 billion – the same amount spent last biennium. Dayton’s proposed budget increases spending to about $37.4 billion. “We believe it’s important for the government to live within its means,” said Koch, adding the projected $5 billion budget deficit is due to an assumed increase in spending. She said one of the fastest growing areas of spending – and most likely for reform – is health and human services. The budget bill approved by the Senate Wednesday afternoon would ban state spending to enact the federal health care overhaul unless the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the law. Koch told chamber members that if any state can handle its own health care it’s Minnesota, home to Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and other renowned institutions. “Let us keep our money. Let us spend it as we see fit,” said Koch. Koch also spoke on her three overarching priorities for the session: creating a business-friendly climate to boost job creation, making the government live within its means, and making it more efficient and cost effective. “The best remedy for a bad state budget is a thriving economy,” she said. She gave an overview of related measures already taken this session, among
13
them bills signed by the governor allowing alternative licensing for teachers and streamlining the environmental permitting process. “They are trying to be very pro-business, which we haven’t heard in a long time,” said Arrie Larsen Manti, Edina Chamber president. According to Tony Kwilas, director of environmental policy at the Minnesota Chamber, the chamber had been working for three years to see efficiencies brought to the permitting process. “When you do a comparison, sometimes unfortunately we take a little bit longer than other states,” Kwilas said. “This year through the leadership of the Legislature as well as the governor we put some pretty substantial changes in place to help move the process along.” In addition, Koch said streamlined House and Senate committees are also making the legislation process better for
business. GOP leadership reduced the number of House committees from 36 to 24, and Senate committees from 25 to 16, at the beginning of the session. “Business people do not have the time to go over to the capital and sit in committee hearings through the course of the week,” said Maureen Scallen Failor, Bloomington Chamber executive director. “The process has definitely been improved. They’ve made it more efficient and more effective.” As the state’s first female majority leader, and the first Republican to the
hold the post in 38 years, Koch also spoke about the historic wave of Republican support last election. She said of the 60 freshman legislators in the House and Senate, 54 are Republicans. Richfield Chamber President Steven Lindgren said the high number of freshman in the majority means fresh ears willing to listen to suggestions and concerns from the private sector. “There’s a new and exciting focus on how free enterprise can flourish in this state that hasn’t been quite as evident in years past,” Lindgren said.

Sprinkler FROM PAGE 1 cost of a home sprinkler system is worth the peace of mind. Kathie Case and two of her sons were home at the time of the fire, along with a pet dog and two cats. They narrowly made it out safely once a laundry-room fire began billowing to the second floor of their home, Kathie Case said. “It was horrible,” Kathie Case said. “Absolutely horrible.” Kathie Case gave the following account and details about what happened: It was in June of 2001, and Ron Case’s City Council meeting was running unusually late. Two children were in bed, and she threw a load of laundry into the dryer, went back into the living room, and a few minutes later the dog barked, a bark like someone was trying to break into the house. “I never heard him bark like that before,” Kathie Case said. Then, all the fire alarms started going off. She walked into the laundry room, and the curtains were on fire. She called 911 and got the small fire extinguisher, which lasted for about 10 seconds, to no avail. She threw the phone and the fire extinguisher, ran through an already blackened hallway and up the stairs to her son David’s room, a fifth-grader at the time. She told him to get out of the house, run to the neighbors and get help. Next, she made her way to her son Sam’s room, a third grader. She tried to open the door so hard and fast that the glass doorknob inside the room flew off. She heard it hit the floor on the other side of the room. The door was stuck, and the fire was growing. “I started thinking he was already dead. … I don’t think I’ve ever been so hysterical,” she said. Frantically trying to get the door open, she was hollering so loudly that
Kathie Case and her husband, Eden Prairie Councilmember Ron Case, had sprinklers installed in their home after they lost nearly everything in a house fire ten years ago. Kathie Case says the cost of a home sprinkler system is worth the peace of mind. (Photos courtesy of the Case family) her son thought someone had broke into the house and was hurting her, so he didn’t know if he should stay and hide or try and help her mom, he later told his mother. He was just a third grader. Still trying to get the door open, Kathie Case remembered there was a hammer on the first floor, but she realized there was probably no way she had enough time to run downstairs, get it and come back upstairs. The fire was growing; the black smoke was getting thicker; the dog was waiting for her below the stairs, and there was no way she was leaving without her son. Realizing what was happening, Sam grabbed the doorknob inside, replaced it and opened the door. As they made their way down the stairs, the fire began curling around the bottom of the staircase. Its walls were black. With the dog following behind, the two ran outside to safety.
FUNERAL CHAPELS, CEMETERIES, AND CREMATION SERVICES
The McReavy Family
Family owned and operated for over 150 years, Washburn-McReavy is committed to providing you and your family with caring and professional funeral services.
At City Hall, police officers would get into the City Council chambers to grab Ron Case. After firefighters helped calm her and her family, they put out the fire but the entire house was ruined by fire, smoke or water damage. Around $500,000 in damage had been done, and the family was out of their home for 8 months. The fire was caused by a leak in the gas line going to the dryer, ignited when the appliance started, she said. With the ceilings exposed, they decided to install sprinkler heads, two over the furnace area, one in the laundry room and one in the middle of the kitchen. At the time, it cost around $1,200. The State Fire Chiefs Association has said home sprinkler systems cost around $1.60 per square-foot, based on the actual average costs of systems that have been installed in other states. The Builders Association has said it
can costs thousands of dollars, depending on individual circumstances. Kathie Case said thinks sprinklers in the home is a necessary safety measure for anyone concerned about their family’s well being. “I think people just don’t realize the more training you have or the more safety things you have in your home the safer you’re making your family.” The State Fire Chiefs Association agrees, and has said one sprinkler head can contain or put out many fires that spread and devastate homes and kill residents. The Builders Association of Minnesota has argued that smoke detectors are successful enough in keeping residents safe, and the added building cost wouldn’t be worth the benefit. Even though bill HF460 would prevent state and local governments from mandating sprinklers in new homes, homeowners could still opt to have one installed. Eden Prairie representatives Jenifer Loon, R-42B, and Kirk Stensrud, R-42A, voted in favor of the bill on the House floor and when it was in committee last month. “I felt the decision is best left to the homeowner in this particular instance,” Loon said after the bill passed through committee in early March. “I don’t take the safety of [Minnesota residents] lightly ... I felt like again there were two very strong arguments on both sides, and I kind of decided the side of not having a mandate was a little more compelling.” She said given the economic conditions, a struggling housing industry and added cost for installing a sprinkler system to a new construction, mandating sprinkler systems could be another blow to the housing and construction industry. Based on testimony from the Builders Association, the increased safety with sprinkler systems would be marginal, Loon said, and she thought it would be best for homeowners to make the decision about adding a sprinkler system rather than mandating it.

High-stakes roll playing minus the theater, in a theater The Eden Prairie Police Department, along with other local law enforcement, ran an “active shooter” drill at the AMC Theater located in the Eden Prairie Mall on Sunday, March 27. Sgt. Carter Staaf, a drill organizer, said the event included over 50 officers training and reserve officers and even city workers who played hostages. The drill was used to practice and evaluate officers’ responses to a public shooting, including communications, SWAT tactics and hostage negotiations. The drill took place early in the morning, when the mall was closed and wrapped up around the time the first movie showed, around 9:40 a.m., Staaf said. (Photos courtesy of the city of Eden Prairie)

STEM FROM PAGE 2 attendees during these Stakeholder Connections meetings, so administrators aren’t there to answer process questions. These meetings are usually an opportunity for community members and parents to share their thoughts, concerns or questions with School Board members – the people seated to represent them. Two of the questions brought up during the most recent, nearly two-hour long
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
session: How should parents decide to sign up their fifth-grade child for STEM if they don’t feel they have enough information about it? And, what is the long-term rollout plan for STEM, after the sixth grade? After the meeting, Baisch said not having enough information is a legitimate concern for parents to have, and they should know they aren’t beholden to the form. If a parent didn’t sign up their child for STEM on the April 1 form, but they later learn more STEM details and then decide to enroll, they can contact their school
principal, she said. On the other hand, if parents did sign up a child for the STEM program, then later they find more details and want to withdraw before school starts, they can contact their school principal about that as well, Baisch said. Addressing the question about how STEM will be incorporated into the middle school and high school, Baisch said there is an existing engineering classroom program, Project Lead the Way, at the high school that utilize STEM principles. As for middle school, administrators and staff are considering transitioning a
similar program to Central Middle School. But, since a planning committee is still working on STEM plans, Baisch couldn’t say for sure what would happen after the sixth grade, but parents should know the STEM experience will continue in middle school, she said. For anyone interested in learning more about STEM, along with the April 12 School Board update, the School Board committee is also planning a May 3 community meeting where a STEM expert will talk about the concept. Getschow FROM PAGE 1 How’s the first week going? The first week has been great. I’ve felt, being new, that I was very welcome by the city staff. And, a lot of events and activities were set up to allow me to meet a lot of members of the city staff and to become acclimated to some of the departments in the city. So the first week has really been a meet and greet and introduction to the city experience. It’s been great. I saw on the city blog there was that, “Who Wants To Be a City Manager?” … Did they kind of spring that on you, kind of a pop quiz? They did spring a pop quiz on me unexpectedly on my first day. That’s a nice “How do you do.” (Laughs) Exactly. However, any question that I wasn’t able to answer, I had lifelines, city staff members that I could point to, to ask how many snowplows do we have? How many gallons of water do we use a year? So, it was a no-lose situation for me. But, it was creative, and it was a good event for me to meet several of the employees.
What exactly does a city manager do? Can you compare it to the CEO of the city? How would you describe to someone what you do? The typical example that is used is exactly that. The City Council, the mayor and City Council are the board of directors and the city manager is the CEO — for the most part in terms of a general overview. You’re right though, a lot of times people think the city manager might be the city planner or manage a certain department, probably because several of the two largest cities in the metropolitan area have mayors that are also the chief executive officer, but almost every other city in the area has a city manager that acts in that capacity. So, I think the CEO analogy is a good one. Coming just through the interview process, what you know about Eden Prairie, your experience in Hopkins — what things will transition pretty well and easily, and what things do you think ... that might take some adjusting? I think in my field, in my area of city mangers, most cities are similar in terms of the services they provide and the operations that they have, so much of what I’ve done in Hopkins does
translate to Eden Prairie, you know, to something as simple as having a fire department, a police department a finance department, a lot of the similar operations. What takes time is learning all the detail or the ins and outs that makes Eden Prairie separate from any other city that would be separate from any other city. So, at least for me the first few months on the job is always a learning and observing and meeting and absorbing, no matter how many cities that you’ve been to, and no matter where you’ve been. I also come from a city, again, that’s similar to Eden Prairie in their location to each other, being in the southwest metro. So, there are a lot of similarities, but Eden Prairie’s a larger community. But, again it’s a matter of just acclimating myself to the new environment, but I’ve done this type of job before, so I understand a lot of what goes into it. It’s just a matter of learning this community and becoming part of this community. In getting ready for the transition, what are kind of one of the biggest areas or subjects that … you, in your capacity, can address for Eden Prairie? What do you kind of
19
see as some of your first big initiatives? Four or five days in, I know that our city like ever other city is dealing in a difficult financial environment, and the city survey that was done, the “Quality of Life Survey” that was done in Eden Prairie illustrated people really value the city services they received, and they’re very highly rated. So, the task over the next year is working toward the next year budget, two year budget, is to craft a budget for the city with everyone involved that could still provide those high quality services at a reasonable price, and what’s been a tough economic environment. Kind of at a big picture, that’s going to be probably the focus of the council and staff, one of the larger items as we get into the summer. What should Eden Prairie residents know about you or what would you like them to know about you? I’m someone who wants to be very involved in the community. Someone who is accessible to the staff and the public and someone who wants to be apart of a great community and try to keep its number one status.Δ1

Eden Prairie Eagles swing for a state baseball title repeat BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS It was a magical and historic baseball season for Eden Prairie High School in 2010. The Eagles collected Lake Conference and Section 2 titles before claiming the state Class 3A championship trophy at Target Field last June. Eden Prairie defeated Burnsville 7-5 in the title game and finished with a 26-1 record. The Eagles lost a considerable amount of talent to graduation, but don’t feel sorry for coach Mike Halloran and his 2011 squad. Eden Prairie has a veteran pitching staff and capable returning hitters and fielders in its quest to successfully defend its state title. “Our hope is to make it back to Target Field,” said Halloran. “We will be tested by a tough regular-season schedule that includes playing against strong Lake Conference teams. “But we have enough talent to get back to state. Pitching and depth should be our strengths. And we could surprise people with our good offensive players. How well we play defensively could be the key to our season.” Eden Prairie pitcher Adam Bray throws out a runner at first during the Eagles’ 7-5 victory over Burnsville in the state Class 3A championship game last June at Target Field. Taylor Uhl has proved to be a championship-caliber athlete during her high school career at Eden Prairie. The senior played a key role in sparking the Eagles to a state soccer championship in 2010 and a state lacrosse title in 2009. Uhl was also a member of state runner-up squads in each sport. Uhl’s excellence on the field and in the classroom earned her Eden Prairie High School’s 2011 Athena Award. The honor is given to the top senior female athlete at each school in the Twin Cities metro area. Uhl and other Athena Award winners will be honored at a luncheon at 11:15 a.m. Friday, May 6, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Uhl collected 11 varsity letters at Eden Prairie in four sports – soccer (four), basketball (four), lacrosse (two) and track (one). Uhl was captain and the team’s Most Valuable Player in soccer last fall. She was a four-time all-conference selection. Uhl was a three-time all-state and all-metro soccer selection. pitcher in the state championship game. Senior lefty Grant Soderberg also was 7-0 a year ago. “Soderberg had a great season as a junior and Bray increased the velocity on his fastball this season after coming through with key wins for us last year,” Halloran said. Senior right-hander Lance Thonvold, who has signed with the University of Minnesota, could start or close. Two other senior right-handed pitchers are Tyler Ruemmele and Dylan Frederick. Some of the pitchers will also see playing time at other positions. Eden Prairie returns one of its top hitters from last season. Senior Tony Skjefte batted .380 as a junior and has signed to play for the Gophers next season along with Thonvold. “Skjefte is one of the best hitters in the state,” said Halloran. “We have moved him from second to shortstop and he has made several spectacular defensive plays in practice.” Eden Prairie has a tradition of producing Division I college shortstops such as Nate Hanson, Kyle Geason and Blake Schmit. Senior catcher Ryan Bull is another Division I signee. He will play baseball at Notre Dame next school year. Eden Prairie’s backup catchers are junior Danny BASEBALL: TO PAGE 23

Senior Dylan Stewart was named Eden Prairie’s Most Valuable Player. The forward averaged 16.9 points per game entering the state tourney. He shot 61 percent from the field this season. Stewart was also named to the All-Lake Conference team along with teammates Grant Soderberg (senior forward), Jack Klukas (senior guard) and Conner Nord (senior center). Four Eagle players received all-conference honorable mention – senior guard Derek Dedeker, senior forward Jacob Foss, senior forward Blake Wragge and junior guard Sander Mohn. Mohn earned the team’s Defensive Player of the Year award. Stewart shared the Most Improved Player award with junior center Jordan
Peterson. The Eagle Coaches Awards went to senior center Brennan Neilson and Dedeker. Eden Prairie won the Class 4A, Section 2 title with a victory over Chaska before advancing to state. The second-seeded Eagles defeated Lakeville South 79-75 in the Class 4A quarterfinals before winning 67-56 over Osseo in the semifinals. Eden Prairie lost 64-52 to No. 1 seed Hopkins in the state title game March 26 at Target Center. The Eagles finished 27-5. Nord, Soderberg and Stewart were chosen to the Class 4A all-tournament team. “We had an unbelievable season and ended up beating 11 different conference champions,” said Eden Prairie coach David Flom. “We had a special group of seniors.” Eden Prairie played at state for the second consecutive year. In 2009-10, the Eagles finished fourth in Class 4A, losing to St. Cloud Tech in double overtime in the semifinals and falling to Henry Sibley in the third-place game.
Eden Prairie’s Team Foxjet swim club capped a successful fall/winter season by finishing third overall in the Minnnesota State Short Course Swimming Championships held over two March weekends in Rochester. Team Foxjet finished fifth in the state age-group meet March 11-13 and produced four individual state champions. Nick Tullemans won the 50- and 100-yard butterfly state titles competing in the 9-10 age group. Jennie Novak was 200 individual medley champion in the 11-12 girls age group. Miles Dunn broke a state record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 28.45 seconds. He participated in the 11-12 boys age division. Dunn also joined teammates William Green, Marco Conati and Ethan Li to take first place in the 400 medley relay. Foxjet swimmers placing in the top eight at state were Shea Braden, Conati, Dunn, Ben Fosdick, Green, Novak, Madison Rundell, Chloe Skogg and Tullemans.
