Online high school prom? And phy ed class? BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s prom season for online students, too, you know. Prom for an online high school, as expected, is something that may need repeating. “They’re like, ‘You have prom and you do online school?’” said senior Clarissa Mings of Andover. She and roughly 40 other students enrolled in the online Insight School of Minnesota participated in a school prom on Friday, April 29, at the Brunswick Zone in Eden Prairie. Insight is part of the Brooklyn Center Public School system and enrollment is free. It started in fall 2008, and enrollment at the start of this year’s second semester was around 500 students, according to Head of School John Huber. There were 22 graduates the first year and around 30 the second year, Huber said, and this year, the spring graduate list is around 40 at last check. For prom, the school reserved a banquet room, decorated it and attracted dressed-up students who dined, danced and even played a video game projected onto a large screen. They expected to crown queen and king, too. Online High School programs work for students with a variety of schedules and backgrounds, said Sheila Verg, a physical education teacher with Insight. Yes, online physical education. Verg, who seems explain this a lot, said she has students keep a log of different activities that qualify for the class. That log has to be verified with another person, like a parent, and submitted each week. There is other work, too, but that settles

Olsen, a 26-year-old Eden Prairie native, runs a serious lawn care business that he has grown since elementary school, but he ran into a snag this winter when more than $30,000 in equipment was stolen. Someone (or persons) made off with a locked 16-foot trailer and didn’t leave any breadcrumbs. This was disappointing to many who saw Olsen develop his company. Eden Prairie resident found not guilty in rare murder case BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Though hard to fathom his family's distress, perhaps it was a bit of relief in a tragic incident. Randel Richardson's final court hearing was Thursday, April 28. It was when the judge was expected to give his ruling in the first-degree murder case. "My verdict in this case is not guilty," Hennepin County Court Judge Mark Wernick said. Around a dozen family members and supporters, including his wife and parents, sat by as Wernick explained Richardson, the 37-year-old from Eden Prairie, was suffering from psychotic depression at the time of his infant son's death last summer, and he did not understand the nature of what he was doing at the time, a conclusion that three psychologists had come to in three separate evaluations. Wernick went through the details of the death, which were the facts agreed upon by defense and prosecuting attorneys. The facts he laid out were strong enough for a first-degree murder conviction, he said, but given Richardson's psychiatric evaluation results, he acquitted him of the charges. A first-degree murder conviction would carry a sentencing of life in prison without parole, Wernick said during the trial. After the trial, Richardson's attorney Anthony Edwards said the ruling and situation is "very unusual with such a

serious crime." There are people with mental illness convicted of crimes, but in this case, Richardson didn’t realize what he was doing at the time was wrong, something concluded by three experts. Having one psychologist find that is rare, he said, much less three. "It is a perfect consensus," he said. Edwards said since the incident last July 31, Richardson has realized what happened last summer and has been "doing better" with medication he's received. The Richardson he met last summer and the one in the courtroom on Thursday were very different, he said. Richardson is now expected to undergo a 60-day psychological evaluation at a secure treatment facility, the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter, Minn., to determine if he is dangerous and should be admitted. He could also be admitted to a less-secure facility, Edwards said. Since the facility currently doesn't have any beds open, however, Wernick ruled to hold Richardson in Hennepin County Jail until space is available, which is expected to take about a week. Even though Richardson has not been convicted of anything, the judge can legally hold him before his evaluation, Edwards said. Edwards said he will leave the evaluations to the experts, but he hopes Richardson will eventually be fine and free again. "I hope that day will come," he said.

FBI seeks information about bank robbery suspect Robbery in Eden Prairie, attempted in Bloomington SUN NEWSPAPERS STAFF REPORT The FBI is seeking information about a man who robbed two banks and attempted to rob another bank Tuesday, April 26. The banks were located in Eden Prairie, Bloomington and Faribault, according to Richard T. Thornton, acting special agent in charge of the Minneapolis FBI Office. According to the FBI: Just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, an employee of the United Educator's Credit Union located at 7912 Eden Road, Suite B, in Eden Prairie, unlocked the bank's front door to allow a man into the bank. The man had been knocking on the door while waiting in the rain. The bank was scheduled to

open at 8:30 a.m. The man had his back to the front door as it was being unlocked for business. Once the door was opened, the man turned around and displayed a handgun to the employee. He said, “This is a robbery. Don't call the police.” The robber walked to the teller counter and demanded money. The only teller on duty gave the robber an undisclosed amount of cash, including a dye pack. The robber left the bank on foot and was last seen around the parking lot. Subsequent investigation revealed that the dye pack exploded outside the bank, and some money was recovered in the parking lot. Shortly after, around 9:15 a.m., a man entered the RichfieldBloomington Credit Union located at 4025 West Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. He walked directly to the teller counter and displayed a handgun to the teller on duty. The robber demanded money, and the teller then walked to a

nearby, glassed area located behind the teller counter. The robber then left the bank on foot without obtaining any money. He was last seen walking southbound through the parking lot. Approximately an hour later, a man entered the Wells Fargo Bank branch located at 300 Western Avenue Northwest in Faribault. He walked to the teller counter and displayed a handgun to a teller. The teller complied with robber’s demand for money and provided him with an undisclosed amount of cash. The robber was not satisfied, and he demanded more money. The teller gave him some.

The robber then left the bank on foot and was last seen headed in a southbound direction through the parking lot. The FBI believes the same individual is responsible for the two bank robberies and the attempted bank robbery. The same individual is also believed to be responsible for the robbery of the Sterling Bank in Savage, on April 11, and the robbery of the U.S. Federal Credit Union in Northfield, on April 14. The robber was described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, between 5'9” and 6' tall, medium build and grey or hazel eyes. He was wearing white tennis shoes, blue jeans, a dark sweatshirt, a black hooded jacket, a black mask, a black knit hat and black gloves. No one was injured during the robberies. The FBI requests that anyone with information regarding these bank robberies contact the authorities involved in the case.

STEM meeting draws crowd BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Students could have their hands full. In a good way. More than 60 people arrived Tuesday evening, May 3, at the Administrative Services Center Gym to hear about the choice STEM program that will start at the fifth grade this fall before becoming part of the entire K-6 coursework in future years for Eden Prairie School District students. STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is about understanding and addressing questions or problems using all four of the disciplines, rather than just learning math or science concepts in isolation. According to Marsha Baisch, Interim Executive Director of Educational Services, the district is going to STEM because they believe it will improve student achievement, help students think critically, better understand relationships and solve real-world problems. There’s also a shortage of professionals in the medical and engineering fields, and they want students to be competitive in those areas. Baisch said STEM is for any kind of student, gifted and talented, an English language learner or anyone else. Students in the STEM classrooms next year will complete two or three projects throughout the year, have one or two outdoor activities and the district will maintain four or five partnerships with companies throughout the year, Baisch said. In STEM classroom, the biggest difference from a traditional classroom will be how the teacher instructs students. STEM will be student centered and teacher directed, Baisch said. Two Eden Prairie teachers, Kim Christensen and Allison Knopf, have been working with student-centered instruction and explained further. The instruction, which will use much of the same materials and lessons that already exist in elementary classroom, will come in five basic stages. They called it the five E’s — engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration and evaluation. Students will begin with a central question for each unit, to develop their curiosity about the subject, which they are then allowed to explore and collaborate with other students. Christensen said students then start making sense of the content in the explaining stage, where they explain how something works, construct their understanding of the subject and show they understand it. Details are solidified in the elaboration stage. Once that understanding is found, they then evaluate how the process went.

Knopf said under STEM, students will be doing more talking than teachers in the classroom, so it’s more engaging for them. When an audience member asked how shy or less forward students would fair in that system, Christensen and Knopf said teachers actually have more time to check in with individual students since they won’t spend so much time in front of the class, teaching the usual way. Addressing a question about STEM students being prepared for state standardized tests, Janet Pladson, the district’s Director of Teaching and Learning, said whether it’s a STEM classroom or not, the teaching will be based on the same standards. In STEM, they start by understanding what standards are expected, then the direct the curriculum toward those standards, but teach in a way that allows students to explore the material using the different disciplines. According to Pladson, teachers will have approximately 16 days of STEM training. There will be two training days before this school year ends, a week during the summer and six days throughout the next school year. When an audience member asked if that was enough training, Pladson said teachers are already trained in new standards and curriculum, so adding the project- and inquiry-based learning will be the plausible, additional step in STEM classrooms. Pladson said the district doesn’t foresee any negative consequences from the STEM program, and Doug Paulson, a STEM specialist with the Minnesota Department of Education, said from his perspective, the biggest change will come for teachers, who will transition to a teaching style that gives students a little more room to explore subjects, so it’s important to support those teachers, watch for their growth and let them understand it may take an extra day to reach a classroom understanding.

The current rollout plan Choice STEM classrooms will start at the fifth grade level for the 2011-2012 school year and expand after that, Baisch said. Next school year, there will be two STEM classrooms at Prairie View Elementary, Forest Hills Elementary and Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion and three STEM classrooms at Eagle Lake and Cedar Ridge elementary schools, Baisch said. For the 2012-2013 school year, aspects of STEM will be rolled out as part of regular curriculum all fifth grade classrooms, sixth-grade classrooms and fourth-grade classrooms. STEM: TO PAGE 10

This Mother’s Day, offer your help – not just your thanks BY SARAH PETERSON • SUN NEWSPAPERS From my observations, mothers are often honored on Mother’s Day with a card, flowers and a simple “thank you.” Sometimes they are taken out to lunch at a restaurant – that’s one less meal to prepare and fewer dishes to wash, thank goodness. But that really doesn’t seem like much. So here’s a simple tip for husbands and significant others this Mother’s Day: Offer to help around the house, whether that means cooking, cleaning, laundry or other chores the wonderful woman in your life does regularly. If you’re ready to go beyond the basics, then ask her what she thinks needs to be done. You’ll score some great brownie points that way.

Not only are you helping her work on her own “honey-do” list, you’re also showing her that her priorities can be your priorities. You’re offering to share her burdens. That’s better than a bouquet of flowers any day. The best part is, you don’t have to wait for Valentine’s or Mother’s Day to roll around. This trick is good every day of the year. I hadn’t thought about it before, but this really does impress someone who does a lot of the household chores. Get out of work, go home, and there’s another long to-do list waiting for you on the table, and the list hasn’t changed much from when you wrote it two days ago. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Trash issue To the editor: “Not in my backyard” is often loudly voiced when discussing the disposal of garbage. So, it was no surprise to read about Eden Prairie’s negative reaction to the thought of having the garbage from Hopkins transferred to their territory. This got me to thinking of how cavalier and unaware most of us are about the disposal of our community’s garbage and our own garbage. What if instead of having our garbage hauled off weekly we were responsible for storing all the garbage we produce at our own place of residence – literally right in our own yards? If we knew our castoffs would be staring at us in perpetuity from our homes we might reconsider getting take-out in a Styrofoam container, frequently updating our electronic gadgets

or ever again purchasing bottled water. We might also rethink how to roof our house, knowing that a huge pile of asphalt shingles could be a permanent eye sore and possible pollutant on our property. The convenience of being able to toss things away, not worrying about the mounds of trash this generates, has lead us to buy things carelessly. A website, “Recycling Revolution,” notes that much of what we throw away could be recycled. It is also shamefully mentioned that the U.S. is the top trash producing country in the world, at 1,609 pounds per person per year. Seems it is time for us all to buy less, reuse and recycle more, least our children inherit a vast waste site. Daniel Johnson Crystal

An open letter to Rep. Kirk Stensrud To the editor: I am dismayed to see news that legislative leaders are introducing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota. I hope you will vote against it when it comes to the House floor for a vote, as there are a host of reasons why it is a terrible idea. A significant number of bills proposed by your colleagues have focused on tearing down handgun control regulations, allowing logging in state parks, further restrictions on women’s health care choices and other overtly partisan issues. This ballot measure would play into this significant thread of culture war by Republican leaders and has nothing to do with the truly pressing issues our state faces. As such, it

decreases Minnesotans’ confidence in our government and our leaders, a confidence that we desperately need in trying times. There are many in our community who are already disappointed in the conduct of this Legislature. It is incumbent upon you to represent the interests of all your constituents, and the people of our district are not interested in political tit-for-tat at the expense of civil rights. We are interested, as we always have been, in economic opportunity, strong public schools, a solid social safety net and modernizing our crumbling transit infrastructure. This ballot initiative has nothing to do with the priorities of our friends and neighbors in Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. I sincerely hope that when LETTERS: TO PAGE 9

Telling tears BY REV. BRENDAN PRIGGE • GUEST COLUMNIST “Jesus Wept.” -John 11:35 That’s your memory work for today. Two words. A noun and a verb. What do we learn from them? The occasion was the death of Lazarus. There are a lot of interesting angles to this story but let’s focus on this one. Jesus cried. Crying usually indicates some kind of deep feeling or emotion like pain or sadness. As obvious as it may seem, it’s worth noting that Jesus actually has deep feelings and emotions. He’s not a machine, cold and unfeeling. Jesus empathized with Mary and Martha because their brother had just died. At the same time, his were not strictly empathetic tears. Jesus was experiencing his own grief at the death of a friend. I find it intriguing how Jesus almost compartmentalizes his emotions, because a few minutes later, Jesus brought Lazarus back to life. Why would he cry about Lazarus being dead when he knew that in a minute he would be alive again? Perhaps it’s evidence that for God, knowing the future doesn’t eliminate present emotion. Jesus grieved when it was time to grieve and rejoiced when it

Gov’t should not provide safety net for life choices To the editor: This is in regard to Dr. Alan Lifson's column last week: Dr. Lifson does not mention the most effective preventive for STI’s: abstinence. It has been known to work 100 percent of the time. If our sex education programs simply provide a manual for having safe sex while tacitly approving sex out of wedlock, we truly have failed our youth.

was time to rejoice. Perhaps we can take a cue from Jesus and acknowledge that it’s OK to be sad for a time, even though we know everything will be all right. Those two words printed above also remind me that when we experience pain and sadness, God is not laughing. He doesn’t delight in your pain. Jesus wept. God wept as his friends grieved and he wept because of his own loss. He empathizes with you as well. God is not your enemy. He’s your closest friend. That also means God rejoices when you rejoice. God is perfectly in tune with you and not only knows how you feel, he cares. I’ll admit, I don’t know the logistics of this whole thing. How can Jesus be happy with me when I’m happy and at the same time be sad with you if you’re sad? No matter. He’s God, I don’t expect to understand Him. But this verse is further evidence that our Savior cares deeply for us and empathizes with us. That’s enough to keep me clinging to Him through faith. The Rev. We have also failed our youth if we do not treat these young people as adults. Dr. Lifson’s column seems to focus on the midteens to mid-twenties age group. Once this group has had the causes and results of STI’s explained to them, let them make their own decisions. It can be very hip and cool to be naughty but as adults, they should understand that there are consequences to their actions and that society cannot and will not always be there to bail them out of trouble they got themselves into. The legislature has no obligation to provide a safety net for “on purpose” behavior whether it is smoking, excessive drinking, illegal drugs, or sex out of wedlock. All of these acts begin with a voluntary action on the part of these young people. To blame the legislature for not providing a safety net for the consequences of irresponsible behavior while tacitly tolerating or even approving the very acts that create these consequences is not an answer. Online school helps tennis player study from afar BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER Erik Nordahl wakes up at the crack of dawn to run sprints and two-mile runs. That’s a warm-up for at least four hours of tennis training and practice every day. It’s part of the 17-year-old’s plan to become a topranked college tennis player and then hit the professional circuit. In United States Tennis Association (USTA) competition last year, Nordahl was ranked 25th nationally in the age 16 category. As an Edina High School sophomore he was runner-up in the 2010 state singles tournament. As a freshman he won the 2009 state doubles championship with teammate Steven Pjevach. “I’ve always loved tennis. I feel like I’m one of the most competitive people out there,” said Nordahl, currently a junior. Nordahl attended Bloomington schools through seventh grade and later attended and played tennis at Edina through open enrollment. These days he calls Eden Prairie home, where his mother lives, when his busy schedule allows him a visit to Minnesota. Last year Nordahl decided to step up his tennis training at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch near San Antonio, Texas. The full-time academy’s weekday schedule is rigorous; students rise at 6:30 a.m. and turn out the lights by 10:30 p.m. Schedules for about 100 students are packed with tennis drills, matches and fitness training. Nordahl’s discipline and hard work resulted in a 100-position jump in his rankings last year, said academy director Phil Hendrie. “Erik improved in his national ranking more than I’ve seen anybody improve in that space of time,” Hendrie said. His speed, endurance and self-confidence will pave the way to college and a possible professional career, Hendrie said. “Erik’s strength, mentally, is that he believes in himself,” Hendrie said. “He believes that when he goes on the court, his work ethic is going to allow him to wear people down and to find a way to win the match.” At the academy, Nordahl completes schoolwork through the Insight School of Minnesota, an online public school based in Brooklyn Center. During several mandatory study sessions every day, he logs onto his laptop computer to complete assignments and dis-

cuss schoolwork with teachers. His courses include honors English and Advanced Placement biology, world history and economics. He maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Nordahl does well with online coursework because he’s a disciplined and motivated student-athlete, said his English teacher Katie Schultz. “Students like Erik have already demonstrated that they can multitask and be successful in numerous things at once,” she said. Nordahl’s accomplishments extend beyond the tennis court. As children, Nordahl and his older sister Lilly were encouraged to excel academically and to try a wide range of activities. Nordahl tried tennis, baseball, basketball, hockey, piano and art. Tennis was his favorite. His mother Fawn Chang lives in Eden Prairie, his father Tom Nordahl lives in Bloomington; the couple is divorced. Nordahl began playing tennis at age 5 and he remembers waking up in the middle of the night to watch his heroes Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras play in Australian Open tournaments. Worried about sports injuries, his mother tried to steer Nordahl toward piano. He began playing at age 5 and won several area junior piano competitions. By age 11 he had performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. “Piano was very promising for me, but I always felt like my passion was on the court,” he said. “I always felt a pull, it’s kind of almost like a magnetic pull that would bring me back to the tennis courts.” Several colleges are recruiting Nordahl for their tennis programs and he recently visited Harvard University and Princeton University campuses to meet with coaches. He expects to make a college decision by early fall, at the beginning of his senior year. He hopes to prepare for a professional career by learning from top college coaches and players. “I’d love to continue that after college,” he said. “But at the same time, I know how difficult being a professional athlete is and how risky it is, sometimes. I also want to be able to have a solid degree from a great school so that I can have something to fall back on, if my dreams don’t end up coming through.”

Seva Football an exercise in service Edina teens provide soccer equipment to girls in India, Vietnam BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS When Tara Gupta missed tryouts for the Edina High School soccer team, she found another way to occupy her time. In the nearly three years since, she’s provided more than 500 pieces of soccer equipment to girls in India and Vietnam through Seva Football, an effort as time-consuming “as playing a sport,” she said. Now she and other members of the Edina High School student group are hoping to add a third country to Seva’s roster. Seva uses soccer to uplift girls and communities based on two principles, Tara said. The first is that playing soccer, called football in most parts of the world, teaches life skills like sportsmanship and teamwork. And second, communities become stronger when girls have access to sports. Tara, a junior and president of Seva, said she was upset when she had to visit family in India the summer of 2008, missing the start of her first high school sports season. “I thought if I can’t play this season, I should help other girls who would never get the opportunity to,” she said. On past trips to India, she’d seen girls trying to play soccer with bare feet on rocky fields. So before departing, she contacted coaches with the Edina Soccer Club, where she’s been on teams since childhood, to seek donations. She asked them to collect used cleats, shin guards, balls and other soccer accessories. Her family packed the items in their luggage, and Seva Football was born. “Seva means service in Hindi, which is the language we speak in India,” Tara said, “and it really is about service.” On that first trip to India, she distributed equipment to girls in

With the help of volunteer coaches, including local high school students, the girls receive training in a daily after-school program. “The sport is awesome,” said Mary Beth Stafford, a junior and vice president of Seva Football. She got involved in 2009, when Seva Football joined the Youth Serving Youth program at Edina High School, which encourages youth leadership, service and social awareness. Mary Beth, who plays soccer with the competitive Minnesota Thunder Academy and is captain of the Edina High School team, said in addition to the game itself, she loves soccer for the intangible skills it imbues. Tara and Mary Beth said soccer empowers girls by increasing their confidence and self-esteem, teaching teamwork and communication and improving their health. “When they play a sport they mean something,” Tara said. “The biggest thing was uplifting these girls that really need it.” The pair leads fundraising

efforts year round, both through community events, like an upcoming fundraiser Friday, May 20, at Davanni’s in Edina, and the group’s website, sevafootball.org. About 10 group members help advertise and run the events. By partnering with local restaurants and selling candy bars on campus, Seva raises just over $500 a year, said Tara. So far it has collected approximately 500 pieces of gear from drives at local schools and soccer associations. In 2009, Tara went back to Allahabad, where she delivered more equipment to Crosthwaite Girls School. Last summer, Seva expanded to Vietnam. Julia Nguyen, president of the Vietnamese Amerasian Society in Minnesota, works with Tara’s mother at the University of Minnesota. She had planned a trip to Vietnam last summer, and volunteered to help Seva set up a program at her childhood school Hung Tran High School, in rural Dai Hai, Vietnam. “In America, you have more opportunities than in Asia, especially in my country,” said

Nguyen, noting there are few teams even for boys outside populous city areas, and none for girls. With $500 raised by Seva Football, she ordered full uniforms – from socks to jerseys emblazoned with Seva – for 25 girls, as well as soccer balls and nets. She drove the equipment from Ho Chi Minh to the school, where a teacher has volunteered to coach the team. Nguyen said participating in sports gives girls a new outlet in Vietnam, and by improving health and relieving stress, can also enhance education. She praised Seva for its work. “They’re giving others opportunity and sharing their own time,” Nguyen said. “That’s a beautiful gesture.” Seva is also reaching out to immigrant populations in Minnesota. This winter, in collaboration with La Oportunidad, a Minneapolis nonprofit serving the Latino community, it delivered soccer balls as holiday gifts to needy children. It also helps secure volunteer Edina referees for Hmong College Prep Academy games in St. Paul. Seva Football is now working on expanding to Uruguay in South America. Tara said she is

in talks with the government’s Ministry of Sports and Partners of the Americas to see how it can help launch the nonprofit’s program A Ganar, which uses football to help at-risk youth in Latin America develop job skills. “Soccer is my life,” said Mary Beth, who plans to work with her Minnesota Thunder Academy teammates to start Seva chapters at schools around the state. “I love it and it’s hard to see people who don’t get to enjoy it as much as I do.” Tara said seeing firsthand the appreciation the girls have for the equipment, she knows Seva is making a difference, even with limited resources. “When I left India the first time, there was one girl that didn’t get a pair of cleats,” Tara said. “We’re always collecting equipment. Thanks FROM PAGE 6 I didn’t come up with this idea on my own. In fact, my own husband is the catalyst for this column. He called me one recent Wednesday afternoon as he was driving from work. He knew he would beat me home by at least an hour, so he called me at my office desk line. “Can you think of anything that needs to get done?” he asked. “You mean, in the way of chores at home?” I responded in wonder. Yep, that’s what he was calling about.

He was saying that, although he was just leaving work, he was ready to go home and start working on dishes, sweeping or vacuuming. He wanted to know, what’s on my to-do list, and what should he start on first when he gets home? I knew before that he was good, but I sometimes forget he’s that good. Bragging rights awarded, it wasn’t two minutes after I got off the phone that I had to tell some of my other married coworkers how lucky I am. Brownie points? Oh, you betcha. I think they’re the peanut-butter-chocolate brownie kind. The ones that melt in your mouth and remind you of Reese’s peanut butter cups. The recipe he likes in particular. Texas grub: Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saucy menu arrives in Plymouth Edina natives open barbecue style restaurant, plan future establishments BY PAUL WAHL â&#x20AC;˘ SUN NEWSPAPERS Plymouth and Wayzata area residents no longer have to catch a plane to get a mouth full of Texas-style barbecue. A franchise of Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Barbecue Restaurants Inc. opened earlier this year on Vicksburg Lane in Plymouth. The eatery held its grand opening last week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were waiting for better weather,â&#x20AC;? said Eric Snover, co-owner. His younger brother, Jon, is in the business with him. Together the Edina natives also operate a franchise in Shakopee that has been open for a year. The restaurants offer ribs, chicken, pork, hot links and brisket, most of which is hickory smoked in a large proprietary smoker. Diners can also select a variety of salads, sides and desserts. The Snover brothers both recommend the chopped brisket to the 250 or so customers who visit the Plymouth store each day, mostly for lunch. Eric was the first to encounter the

Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product while attending Southern Methodist University, a private school with 11,000 students located in the heart of Dallas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was my favorite place to get barbecue,â&#x20AC;? said Eric, 27, noting that the opportunities for saucy dining were far greater there than in Minnesota. After returning home to Edina after college, Eric began job-hunting. Finding few options, he turned his attention to researching franchises and remembered his Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience. Jon had also recently returned to Minnesota from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. It seemed like a good fit. The Shakopee store opened in April 2010 and they say response has been great. Opening restaurants in an economic environment that can only be described as unfriendly has raised some eyebrows, the Snovers admit. But the sluggish economy served as a plus. Both locations are former Umbria

Pizza outlets. That company, another franchise operation, locked its doors in Shakopee in 2009 and later closed in Plymouth. Leases on both locations were â&#x20AC;&#x153;great deals,â&#x20AC;? Eric said, plus a good portion of the equipment left behind has been put to use. What wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usable was auctioned. The quick-serve barbecue chain has grown from 26 stores in 1999 to 120 in 2010. The companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth rate the past two years has averaged 35 percent, the company claims. Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s began franchising in 1994. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our progress is surprising to a lot of folks, but it makes sense,â&#x20AC;? said Roland Dickey Jr., president of Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People want to get out of the rat race and own their own business. In turn, these new stores are employing lots of people who otherwise would still be looking for jobs.â&#x20AC;? The Plymouth franchise averages 15 to 20 workers, many of them line servers. A vital job is placing the meats in the

smoker each evening at 7:30 p.m. and removing it and preparing it to serve the next morning. The 3,100-square-foot restaurant seats 90 indoor and another 115 outdoors, weather permitting. According to information provided by Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, a franchise can be purchased for a total investment of between $58,000 and $394,000 with a $15,000 initial franchise fee. By comparison, the average McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s franchise begins at $250,00. The Snovers are looking to open a third Dickeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably somewhere in Dinkytown or a downtown location. The brothers recently hired a general manager and are looking forward to â&#x20AC;&#x153;getting a day off.â&#x20AC;? Grand openings regularly feature $1 sandwiches and door prizes. A portion of proceeds from the day will be donated to Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cancer Research Fund. A barbecue-eating contest and fundraiser is also planned with the Minnesota finals occurring May 16 at the Plymouth location, 3195 Vicksburg Lane.

If you've ever wondered about the two old buildings by Perkins and Edina City Hall, now is your chance for a behind the scenes look. The first of three open house events is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at two of Edina’s oldest buildings located at Tupa Park, 4816 Eden Ave., Edina. Cahill School, a one-room school that served southwest Edina from 1864 to 1958, and Minnehaha Grange No. 398, built in 1873, are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Edina-based Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club is dedicating its Spring Ice Show performance Friday, May 6, to the memory of Cindy Robb, a longtime Braemar volunteer and skating mom to her youngest daughter Catherine. Robb died in a house fire Monday, April 18, in Edina. “The Spring Ice Show really brings together our skating family and the Edina community as a whole,” said David Litteken, past president and current member of the skating club’s board of directors. “Cindy Robb gave much of her time to help with the Ice Show over many, many years. Cindy took much joy in watching Catherine skate at Braemar from elementary school through her senior year at Edina High School.” During the Friday performance, skaters will pay tribute to Cindy and her family. Husband Peder Robb and daughters Catherine and Melissa plan to be at the ice show for the tribute. In addition, club members will collect monetary contributions benefiting the Fraser School in Richfield. Robb’s oldest daughter, Melissa, was a student at

Fraser, a nationally renowned nonprofit serving children and adults with special needs through comprehensive education, healthcare and housing services. In addition to identifying the wildflowers present, noxious weeds will also be identified with tips for removal. The nonprofit’s 38th annual plant sale is Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, at Arneson Acres Park, 4711 W. 70th St., to raise money for city garden projects. Karen Platt, plant sale chair, said customers would be able to access the park this Mother’s Day weekend despite the beginning of West 70th Street reconstruction last month. The street has been closed to through traffic east of the park between France Avenue and Cornelia Drive. Platt said that section is expected to be open westbound Friday and Saturday, allowing passage to the park from France Avenue. Platt said the easiest way to access the park is still from Highway 100. Arneson Acres is located about a block

east of the 70th Street exit. And while the spring planting season is about two weeks behind last year due to frigid temperatures, Platt said it has “actually been a more typical winter.” “We’ve been working right along,” she said. “Despite the cloudy weather, things are starting to bloom.” For the sale, the roughly 120 Edina Garden Council members begin raising annuals at the Arneson Acres greenhouse in February, as well as bring winter-hardened perennials from their own gardens, like day lilies, hostas and ferns. “You’ll know if they survived this winter, they’re hardened,” said Platt. Other plants for sale, including herbs and vegetables, are purchased from a commercial supplier. Platt said this year, a five-person committee handmade about 200 hanging flower baskets – a popular Mother’s Day gift item – with unique combinations of plants outside the usual geraniums and impatiens offered at big box stores. “We had fun,” Platt said. “We came up with a lot of new designs.” A 10-inch basket costs $20. Growing up in Edina, Jim Ellis was fascinated by James Bond and his ingenious contraptions. At an early age, he began making his own. His neighborhood was the first to have a weed whip when he was 8. At 12 he learned to weld, and by 15 he was building go-carts from scratch, he said. “It’s always exciting to do something that’s never been done before,” said Ellis. “Everybody has a gift, something they’re good at. Me, I just come up with things.” For the last 30 years, as president of Edina-based Environmental Products of Minnesota, Inc., his work has been more run-of-the-mill. With a degree in industrial engineering, he primarily designs air filtration and dust collection systems for other companies. But recently, he was asked to help remove harmful substances from water. It’s not poison from Bond-esque villains but still exciting work, he said. “I got bit by the humanitarian bug,” said Ellis, who lives in Edina with high school sweetheart and wife Teri Ellis. “It’s extremely rewarding.”

As part of an Oxfam International pilot program, Ellis created a filtration system to provide healthy drinking water to an African community plagued by fluorosis, a bone-wasting condition caused by the high mineral content of the water in the region. He’s also working on a mobile unit for when disaster strikes. Oxfam commissioned the prototype from PROtector Treatment Systems, LLC, for the remote village of Longech in the Turkana region of Kenya. According to Ellis, the organizations were trying to find a way to reduce both salt and fluoride in water when he was hired as PROtector’s director of engineering and production. “We put fluoride in our water, but many countries have naturally 10 or 20 times the safe human level in their water,” Ellis said. “The water in this particular well was 16 time World Health Organization suggested levels.” According to WHO, while good for dental health at low levels, long-term ingestion of large amounts can lead to potentially severe skeletal problems including calcification of ligaments. With the online program, teachers are licensed, the school is accredited and students must meet state standards and can go onto college, Huber said. “When they graduate,” Huber said, “they would meet the same requirements that a Brooklyn Center student would meet, except the delivery is online.” The school also receives per-pupil funding like any other Brooklyn Center school, Huber said, and the enrollment process is much like open enrolling from one public school district to another. Except that student could live in Duluth.

Standard per-pupil funding from the state of Minnesota is $5,124 per student. It’s unclear how much it costs to run the online school program. Reports were not made available before this article went to press. One common misconception is that online high school, with its flexibility (and lack of drama), is easier than traditional schooling, Huber said. The curriculum can still be challenging, and the day-to-day problems are a little different than what you’d face in a traditional school’s hallways, Huber said. But keeping students motivated is still a staple.

“Even though it’s a really nice day outside, you have to go to school,” Huber said. Gendreau said roughly the same thing. Since “going to school” in this case can simply mean turning on the school-issued laptop (a free rental), the temptation to not turn on that computer can be strong, she said. But, keeping in contact with students through email, online chatting and phone are the best way to keep in touch with students and keep them on track, Gendreau said. And, Mings said teachers have been great about responding to questions or concerns. Mowed down FROM PAGE 1 did, and he saw the young Olsen pushing a lawnmower in front of LaBarre’s driveway, on his way to one of his first lawn-care gigs. “He’d be gone for quite a while,” LaBarre said. “I’d wave. He’d wave back.” The next summer, Olsen, this neighbor kid with a lawnmower, was at it again. So, LaBarre stopped him one day, he said. “I said, ‘Hey, fella, I’m gonna give you something right now. You’re gonna make it. You know what it takes,’” LaBarre said he told him. The man was right. Starting with just a few neighborhood lawns and distributing flyers in Eden Prairie and Minnetonka, he steadily gained more work and was pretty established by High School, according to his account. He hired his friends for extra help, bought a Jeep, a trailer, had commercial-size lawn equipment and other materials. It kept growing. He paid for that Jeep, his first car, by himself. He paid for a

lot by himself, he said. “I felt bad taking money from [my parents],” Jason Olsen said. He now owns a home in Excelsior, too, he said. “He was pretty much self sufficient and managing most of his finances by himself and saving money at the same time, which is tough,” his father Mark Olsen said. Jason was just following in the footsteps of his dad, who opened a flower store in Hopkins with Jason’s grandfather in the 1970s and ran until he sold it seven years ago, Mark Olsen said. In the ’70s, Mark Olsen said, he started selling flowers door-to-door, but then bought the greenhouse from owners of the Hopkins Greenhouse. Even while going through an entrepreneurial program at the University if Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Jason came home on weekends to mow his customers’ lawns, he said. He now has around 100 clients, mainly residents in the Eden Prairie area, but he also has a few businesses. Other than mowing, his operation also includes aeration, de-thatching, yard cleanup, some irrigation system maintenance, and snowplowing and shoveling in the winter. Olsen’s operation is called Minnesota Ground Control. He just changed it from Olsen Enterprise.

He hasn’t done much marketing, he said, but he plans on distributing some flyers and sending some direct mail materials – on a bit larger scale than the flyers he distributed in middle school. “I want to keep that kind of small town type of company,” Olsen said. What does he get for this self-made initiative? He gets his stuff stolen, that’s what. It was a locked, closed trailer full of lawn care equipment totaling more than $33,000, which was somehow hoisted from his dad’s work. And, of course, it was right before he was about to file some paperwork for insurance coverage on the trailer, Olsen said. His dad said they figured since it was on his work’s property, it was covered already, but they had been instructed to get extra insurance, just in case something should happen. Well, something did happen in February. On Sunday, Feb. 13, after Olsen was done plowing, he returned to Minnesota Supply Company, on Flying Cloud Drive, where he kept some equipment, including a black 16-footby-6-foot trailer holding three commercial size mowers, attachments for each and some leaf blowers.

The trailer was gone. There was no trace of cut locks, tire tracks or other possible pieces of evidence, the Olsens said. “It looked pretty professional,” said Jason’s father Mark Olsen, “because there was no sign of anything.” After calling police, they contacted nearby companies to see if they had security cameras pointed near their facility that could help them spot someone taking the trailer. No luck. “We didn’t get much success with searching all that out,” Mark Olson said. Eden Prairie Police have entered the trailer’s license plate into a stolen vehicle notification system and they’ve checked pawnshops and online consumer sites for the stolen goods. No luck with those, either. So, now with gas prices on the rise and even with a new line of credit to replace the equipment, Olsen said he may not be able to expand this season like he wanted because of the loss, not put cash down for additional equipment or hire another worker. But, he still has enough resources to serve his customers, he said. “At least its all replaceable,” he said.

It’s so fine it goes right through the mosquito netting in your tent. It’s hot and really hard for equipment to survive.” His manual system, which costs about $30,000, was placed on an existing cement-lined well in the village. The water is then pushed through a series of filters and membranes that remove bacteria, salt and fluoride before the water flows out a hose and into villagers’ buckets and bottles The system was installed in September, and during a series of visits, the team redesigned and rebuilt some aspects. It’s now filtering up to 1,000 liters per hour, meeting the project goal of a 100 percent increase in treatment capacity. “It’s been up and running and producing a whole lot of good water since January,” Ellis said. He said Oxfam is teaching villagers proper maintenance of the PROtector. The membranes and filters will need to be changed periodically. He said the people are coming around to the taste of non-salty water. “The people were extremely amazed because it’s the fist time that village had ever tasted what they called ‘sweet water,’” he said. “To taste that water for the first time coming from their

Ellis said PROtector Treatment Systems is working with humanitarian organizations to establish a number of long-term programs in other rural and urban communities around the world, including additional locations in Kenya, Ghana, India and South Africa. Now Ellis has his sights set on a mobile version that will use a manually-powered generator with solar and battery backup to produce drinking water from nearly any contaminated source and provide power for medical, communications and other needs. The emergency system is in the design phase. He is seeking investors to build the first prototype. “We’re looking for someone that says let’s be ready for the next natural disaster,” Ellis said. COMMUNITY NOTES Twin Cities Youth Chorale auditions May 16-17 Twin Cities Youth Chorale will hold free auditions Monday and Tuesday, May 16-17, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 7217 W. Broadway, Brooklyn Park. The youth chorale is for 9-to-14-year-old boys and girls from metro area communities. All students are welcome, and no experience is needed. Auditions will include rhythm and pitch matching, as well as vocal range exercises using vocal warm-ups, echo clapping and singing. These exercises are demonstrated on the group’s website. The Eagles, 4-0 in the Lake Conference, continue to exhibit a balanced scoring attack. Christine Easton contributed six goals and one assist to aid the Eagles during an 18-5 victory over Hopkins April 26. Ciera Stifel came through with four goals and three assists. Anna Johnson and Emma Claire Fontenot scored two goals each. Other Eden Prairie scorers were Riley Allen, Annie Thul, Haylie Honn and Heidi Colford. Eden Prairie goalie McKenzie Johnson made 12 saves to preserve the win. Eden Prairie had a tougher challenge April 28 before escaping with an 11-9 triumph over Minnetonka. Easton and Thul provided three goals apiece. Also scoring were Fontenot (2), Greta Colford (1), Heidi Colford (1) and Anna Johnson (1). Goalie McKenzie Johnson stopped nine shots. “We are coming together as a team and continue to get balanced scoring,” said Eden Prairie co-head coach Beth Patterson. “Johnson has been playing very well in goal. “She has good anticipation and quickness.” Eden Prairie made its annual trip to Illinois last weekend for scrimmages against defending Illinois state champion Loyola Academy and Evanston Township. “This was a fun trip for the girls and we faced a lot of good competition,” said Patterson. Eden Prairie will host Wayzata at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Aerie Stadium. EP wins Tri-State Invitational boys golf championship There was a three-way tie for first place in the Tri-State Invitational boys golf tournament April 29-30 at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park. Eden Prairie’s Dylan Baker and Austin Wilson shot 151 in the 36-hole event, as did McCabe Buege of Rogers. Buege won the individual championship in a scorecard playoff. Baker shot rounds of 71 and 80 while Wilson carded 74 and 77 in the two-day tournament. But Baker and Wilson were able to celebrate Eden Prairie’s team championship. The Eagles finished first with a two-day total of 620. Rogers was second (636) and Eastview placed third (650). Rogers was the tournament’s defending champion. Wilson and Baker have been Eden Prairie’s low scorers this season. Baker tied Wayzata’s Tyler Lowenstein for first place during a 304305 dual-meet loss April 21 at Wayzata Country Club. Both players shot 1-overpar 73. Eden Prairie’s co-captains are Baker and Wilson. Other Eagle varsity players are Bennett Schroeder, Kevin Brooke, Greg Gibas, Ryan McMonigal, J.T. Eagles split pair of games in wooden bat tourney EP is 9-2 overall after loss to Eau Claire North, win over Shakopee BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie put away its metal bats last weekend to compete in the Shakopee Wood Bat Invitational baseball tournament April 30. The Eagles had mixed success with the traditional bats, splitting two games. Eden Prairie lost 10-1 to Eau Claire North (Wis.) in the first game. The Eagles were limited to three hits. Ryan Maenke had a RBI double. Brett Guba and Lance Thonvold had one hit apiece. Eagle coach Mike Halloran used three pitchers – Grant Soderberg, Cameron Mingo and Dylan Frederick. Soderberg was tagged with the loss. Eden Prairie rebounded to pound out 17 hits during a 15-7 triumph over Shakopee in the second game. Getting two hits each were Tyler Ruemmele, Ryan Bull, Thonvold, Soderberg and Luke Newgaard. Soderberg and Thonvold had three RBI

each. “Our first game wasn’t a good one against a good Eau Claire North team,” said coach Halloran. “Eau Claire was very aggressive. We didn’t play well defensively, committing three errors. “But we had a much better effort in the second game against Shakopee. We scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open.” Eden Prairie had a 9-2 overall record after the tourney split. The Eagles were 31 in the Lake Conference. Eden Prairie blanked Edina 2-0 April 27 at home. Thonvold started on the mound for Eden Prairie and worked five innings, allowing five hits and striking out five. Soderberg picked up a win pitching two innings of hitless relief. Bull had a RBI triple and Thonvold contributed two of the Eagles’ seven hits. Other hits went to Tony Skjefte, Bull, Danny Blasy and Geno Larkin. Eden Prairie will host Hopkins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Round Lake Stadium. The Eagles travel to Braemar Field for a 6:30 p.m. game against Edina Monday, May 9.

Eden Prairie boys run away with Booster Invitational title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie ran away from the field to win the boys division of the Eden Prairie Booster Invitational Track Meet April 30 at Aerie Stadium. Despite cold and rainy conditions, the Eagles won the championship by a large margin over second-place Edina. Eden Prairie placed first with 193.50 points. Edina totaled 108 points. Moorhead finished third (91.50) and St. Thomas Academy took fourth (70). Rounding out the nine-team field were Minnehaha Academy (62), Farmington (58), La Crosse Logan, Wis. (39), Minneapolis North (37) and Blake (34). Eden Prairie started the meet on a winning note placing first in the 4 x 800-meter

relay with a time of 8 minutes, 13.66 seconds. The Eagles’ Jordan Mugarura was first in the 100 (11.40 seconds). Eden Prairie’s Sam Wright placed third (11.58) and Steve Frisbie finished fourth (11.60). Eden Prairie claimed four of the five top spots in the 110 hurdles. Danny Virgin was victorious (15.66). Alex Dewey placed second (15.91), Matt Griffin was third (16.02) and Jack Lagermeier came in fifth (16.29). Ryan Stewart and Mitch Stenoien finished seventh and eighth respectively in the 1,600. Eden Prairie won the 4 x 100 relay with a time of 46.05. Eden Prairie’s Griffin contributed a first in the 300 hurdles (41.40). Lagermeier was third and Dewey came in fifth.

He just missed breaking the state record of 50-4. In the 3,200, Mohamed Mohamed finished second (9:42.28) and Kyle Bratrud placed third (9:48.24). Eden Prairie’s Latrell Snider was fourth in the high jump (5-8). Bryan Elyea-Wheeler cleared 12-0 to place fourth in the pole vault. Anders Bjorkman and Tim Ose finished sixth and

seventh in that event. Snider attained first-place honors in the triple jump (41-0). Bjorkman was third (38-0). Eden Prairie’s Tyson Reinke netted a first-place discus throw of 129-05. Tony Yost finished fourth in the shot put (44-11).

Girls place second Eden Prairie finished second in the invitational girls track meet with 130 points. Wayzata won the team championship by scoring 137.50 points. Tobin is all-conference Augustana College senior Kate Tobin was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Golf Team.
