Red Rock Lake finally gets its pesky weeds pulled BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Those floating mounds of gnarly vegetation and roots, known as bogs or tussocks, are finally being cleaned out of Red Rock Lake, a 71-acre lake just northwest of Staring Lake in Eden Prairie. For years, some residents have said, the bogs floated around the lake, running into docks and blocking some access points. Those who are part of the lake association, Friends of Red Rock Lake, appealed to the Riley Purgatory Creek Bluff Watershed District and the city of Eden Prairie for help. The city offered $5,000 for bog cleanup and another $5,000 for the clearing of the invasive plant, curly leaf pondweed, which is expected to take place later this month. The pondweed cleanup bill totals $20,000. The watershed district will be paying $15,000 of it. Midwest Weed Harvesting, with an office in Savage and owned by Rick Thompson, has completed the bog removal and has been hired to remove pondweed. He and employee Justin Kemper were out on the southern part of the lake June 3, breaking apart the largest bog at the lake’s edge and dumping it into a trailer. The previous Friday they had used a harvester to grab the bog and pull it across the lake to the south landing. Once the trailer was loaded (or bogged down), the two dumped the load at the

Former EP resident indicted for alleged terrorist support BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS A former Eden Prairie resident has been charged in federal court with four counts related to providing materials to a terrorist organization in Somalia. Ahmed Hussein Mahamud, 26, was arrested in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday, June 9, and then charged with the four counts in Southern District of Ohio federal court. He will be transported to Minnesota, where he’ll be prosecuted in the District of Minnesota federal court, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “We know for a fact that he lived in Eden Prairie until February of 2011, and that’s when he moved to Ohio,” said U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Jeanne Cooney. He is a U.S. citizen of Somali descent, she said, and it’s unclear how long he lived in Eden Prairie, but much of his alleged criminal activity occurred while he lived in Minnesota. Charges listed in the indictment indicate he helped supply materials to a terrorist group in Somalia. The indictment, which was unsealed after Mahamud’s court appearance June 9, states he allegedly supplied money, people and materials to al-Shabaab in Somalia, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group. Those materials, according to the indictment, were supplied in “ … conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim or injure persons in a foreign country … .” Two charges regard conspiring with other individuals to provide materials to support a terrorist organization. There were no specific dates for those allegations; they occurred from “ … a date unknown through the present … ,” according to the indictment.
The other two charges relate to Mahamud allegedly sending materials to al-Shabaab, on an unknown date, around April 20, 2009, and around July 27, 2009. It’s unclear when federal court hearings will begin and trial dates will be set for Mahamud. He is among 20 people that have been charged in Minnesota related to alleged support of al-Shabaab, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Of them, eight have been arrested in the United States or overseas, five of whom have pleaded guilty. Omer Abdi Mohamed is one of them awaiting trial. Mahamud Said Omar is another alleged terrorist-supporter who is fighting extradition from Holland to the United States, but he will most likely face prosecution in Minnesota, Cooney said. There are also two Rochester women who are expected to go to trial for helping fund the terrorist group, Cooney said. Another eight are at large and likely living abroad, and two others are believed to have died in Somalia, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Farah Mohamed Beledi is one of those believed to be dead, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was positively identified as a suicide bomber in a May 30 attack at a Transitional Federal Government checkpoint in Mogadishu, Somalia. The other suicide bomber in the incident is unknown. Beledi is believed to have left Minnesota for Somalia in October 2009, and he was indicted by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis the following July, according to the FBI.

EP School Board has budget decisions to make BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School Board discussed the possibility of a referendum and reviewed a preliminary 2011-2012 budget during its Tuesday, June 7, meeting. Both a referendum decision and the approval of a final budget are expected by the end of the month.
Budget overview The preliminary general fund budget for the 2011-2012 school year shows the district is expected to have a $3.6 million deficit, with $94.9 million in expenditures and $91.3 million in revenue. The district has faced deficits in its yearly budgets before, but if approved, it would be one of the largest deficits it has had in recent years. Future yearly deficits could grow even larger without much funding help anticipated from the state and the loss of some federal funds at the end of the 2012 fiscal year.
The per-pupil state-aid funding level (just over $5,000 per student) has not increased in the last four years, and the Eden Prairie School District has not had a voter-approved tax increase in the last seven years, according to the school district. The preliminary budget includes a spending increase of 1.39 percent from last year. Given little revenue increases in recent years, the K-6 shift STEM implementation and other changes, the minimal increase is quite an accomplishment, Chief Operating Officer Patricia Magnuson said. “I’m very proud to introduce this budget,” she said. Later this month, the school board is expected to approve a final budget, and if it is approved with a $3.6 million deficit, reserve funds would be used to fill the gap. That would leave $7 million in unreserved funds, which could be needed to balance the 2012-2013 budget, according
to meeting documents. The school district could be looking at making $4 million to $6 million in budget reductions for the 2012-2013 school year, Supt. Melissa Krull said, whether or not the school board approves putting a referendum on the ballot this fall. If the district approves the maximum referendum revenue allowed by state, it could raise $4 million. However, referendum funds would not be available until the 2012-2013 school year, according to meeting documents. Magnuson told the School Board that the district will have to plan for $5 million to $6 million in budget cuts whether or not a referendum is approved and passes.

sibility of seeking an operating fund referendum and the continuation of a bond referendum for capital projects. If the school board approves a referendum, it would be included on the voters’ ballot in the November elections. Since the community survey results were presented in April, which showed respondents were slightly in favor of a referendum, the state raised the district’s referendum cap to $4 million. That means the estimated, maximum tax increase for a medium value home in Eden Prairie would be $172 per year if a referendum is run with the intention of raising the maximum allowable amount. The school board could decide to pass a levy it deems more palatable for residents, closer to $155 for the average value home. Board members have discussed putting a referendum at that

AED saves life at Oak Point Intermediate School It was a bit of a hectic week for Eden Prairie Police and fire departments last week. City spokeswoman Katie Beal reported that the agencies responded to a car fire, house fire, industrial accident and use of an automated external defibrillator at an Eden Prairie school gym, among other calls for service in early June. The following information is gleaned from Beal’s report. • A 38-year-old man was revived with an automated external defibrillator after collapsing at the Oak Point Intermediate School gymnasium, 8025 School Road. At 3:01 p.m., Saturday, June 11, police received a call about a man who had collapsed and was unconscious in the gym. The man was with a group that had rented the gym space. Another man, a doctor, grabbed the AED and used it on the man. By the time paramedics arrived, the
man was alert and was able to raise himself onto a stretcher. • Around 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 4, police responded to a reported car fire near Baker Road and St. Andrew Drive. A 37-year-old female pulled her 1999 Ford pickup truck to the side of the road after hearing a loud bang. When she got out, she noticed a fire under the truck. A motorcycle rider behind the woman reported a trail of leaking gasoline burning behind the truck just before the woman pulled over. When the fire department arrived, the truck was fully engulfed. • At 1:54 p.m., Thursday, June 2, dispatchers received a call about an industrial accident at Savillex Corporation, 10321 W. 70th St. When authorities arrived, a 51-year-old man from Young America was on the floor. His right forearm
caught in a press machine and was crushed. He was taken to a Waconia hospital. • A home sprinkler system reportedly helped prevent extensive fire damage to a house on the 17000 block of Lorence Way. The house fire was reported Saturday, June 11. There was $50,000 in damage to the home, but it could have been more extensive if the fire was not held in check by the sprinkler system. Those inside the home got out safely. The Eden Prairie fire department received mutual aid from Chanhassen, St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Excelsior and Edina fire departments. The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire department could not be reached before deadline for printing this report. — Compiled by Paul Groessel

Family reunions help seniors connect, reflect BY BOB RAMSEY • GUEST COLUMNIST My wife is hosting her Layman family reunion here in Minneapolis this summer. Her mother was one of nine sisters raised on the old homestead in Kansas. Most of them never strayed too far from that point of origin. In the old days, the family gathered together often – especially around Memorial Day. The nine sisters are all gone now, but the cousins have committed to keeping the tradition alive. This year it is in Minnesota. Contrarily, my family never had reunions because there were no living grandparents, aunt, uncles or cousins by the dozens to reunite. My family was always small and now I’m “it.” So after observing the Layman family’s annual get-together, I wonder if they fully appreciate how fortunate they are to be able to gather as family. Reunions are important, because family is important. Ogden Nash once said that family is a “unit composed, not only of children, but of men, women, an occasional pet and the common cold.” But there’s more to it.
In his book “Families,” Howard Jones says it best – “Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one, because you’re human. You didn’t come from nowhere.” Families are bound by blood but even more by shared history and heritage. Families help us grow and learn standards and morals. They teach us who we are and what we stand for. With family, we are part of something bigger than ourselves. We not only inherit genes from our family, we inherit a sense of place and part of our souls as well. And it’s family, more than anyone else, who will honor our memory. Friends may come and go, but family is permanent. “The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works is the family,” said Lee Iacocca. We are not limited to family; but we are always family. You don’t have to live close to your extended family members or hang out
with them all the time; but it’s important to touch base regularly. Many family reunions are joyous events; but even if they aren’t, they serve a purpose. Family reunions remind us of where we came from and how we fit in. As elders of the tribe, reunions allow seniors to pass on family traditions, values, memories, heirlooms and legacies. Best of all, family reunions help seniors reflect on the context of their lives and connect with living links to their past. Of course, some people don’t like family reunions. Some don’t even like their family. Likewise, some people don’t like visiting the dentist, but they go anyway. It’s good for them. If you get a chance to attend your family reunion, go! It will be good for you. Just ask the Layman family. Bob Ramsey is a lifelong educator, writer and advocate for vital aging who resides in St. Louis Park. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Remove sales taxes from Minnesota Constitution To the editor: When voters approved a question on the 2008 general election ballot, they put into the Minnesota Constitution an amendment that raises the state sales tax by 0.375 percent until the year 2034. We call this amendment the Sales Tax Amendment. It raises about $250 million per year and requires the money be spent on “outdoor heritage, clean water, parks and trails, and arts and cultural heritage.” Supporters call it the Legacy Amendment. The Sales Tax Amendment should be repealed because it violates principles of government, is a political slush fund and unfairly takes money from our poorest citizens who need their income more than they need the elite uses to which the tax is put.
Tax rates do not belong in the Minnesota Constitution. The Constitution is the place for legal principles and broad policies and governing structures. Putting tax rates in the Constitution corrupts our basic governing document, transforming it into little more than an ordinance. Tax rates should be only in laws passed by the Legislature, under the control of the people’s elected representatives who can raise, reduce, remove or otherwise adjust them. Hard-wiring this regressive tax rate into the State Constitution creates a parallel legislature to crowd out the state’s highest priorities for the next 23 years. During these days when the Legislature and the Governor are battling over what combination of borrowing, raising taxes and cutting vital programs they must implement, the STA money stands aside
as untouchable for easing the budget problems of health care, education, infrastructure and law enforcement. In addition, the state’s fiscal circumstances and today’s electorate are significantly different from those of 2008. Last November’s election results demonstrate how strongly voters are concerned about taxes and spending. Those voters should have the opportunity to weigh in on whether the Sales Tax Amendment in the Minnesota Constitution is allowed to stand, or is repealed. Visit repealthesalestaxamendment. com for unfolding information on this issue. Andy Cilek Eden Prairie Andy Cilek is president of the Minnesota Voter’s Alliance.

Thoughts on temptation BY BRENDAN PRIGGE • GUEST COLUMNIST Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made…” Genesis 3 is a pretty depressing chapter in the Bible. It records the entrance of sin into the world. Sad as it may be, Genesis 3 is very useful because it teaches us about temptation and its consequences. We are introduced to a snake of some kind and we find out later in the Bible that this serpent was really the devil. Genesis 3 shows us how the devil tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. We can learn from their failure and strive to do better than they did. The Bible teaches that the devil is looking for ways to lure people into sin. Based on my experience, the devil is no slouch when it comes to tempting. Genesis 3:1 calls him “crafty.” The devil knows our weaknesses, not because he’s
Do you know your weaknesses? If so, be smart and avoid situations where your weaknesses might be exposed. If you’re not aware of your weaknesses, I’d give it some thought. Know your vulnerabilities and don’t put yourself at risk.
all knowing like God, but because he takes careful notes. He knows our weaknesses and exploits them. Do you know your weaknesses? If so, be smart and avoid situations where your weaknesses might be exposed. If you’re not aware of your weaknesses, I’d give it some thought.
(952) 431- 9970 Find us on:
Know your vulnerabilities and don’t put yourself at risk. If you hear the devil knocking, don’t open the door. Elsewhere, the Bible reveals this helpful bit of information about temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV “God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But
when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” When it comes to temptation, there’s good news and bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first. The bad news in that verse is there’s always a way out of temptation, so when you sin, you’ve only got yourself to blame. God always provides a way out. It may be as simple as saying, ‘No!’ The good news in that verse is that there is always a way out. You’re never cornered. With God’s help, you can avoid sin, not perfectly, but consciously and more effectively. Rely on God’s strength to avoid giving in to temptation. Rely on God’s grace and forgiveness when you fail. Regional trail plan up for inspection Multi-use trail would connect Bloomington and south Minneapolis through east Richfield BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS There are a few years to go before a new length of pavement is laid down, but walkers, bicyclists and inline skaters can take a look at a plan to connect Bloomington and Richfield to Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. Three Rivers Park District will hold open houses later this month for the seven-mile Intercity Regional Trail plan. The trail will connect the Minneapolis Grand Rounds trail system at Lake Nokomis to the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail in Richfield, the Mall of
America in Bloomington and possibly the Dakota County regional trail system across the Minnesota River from Bloomington. The north-south trail is envisioned as a 10-foot wide multi-use trail that will run parallel to streets in many areas, but will be separate from the street, similar to a sidewalk, according to Kelly Grissman, senior manager of planning for Three Rivers Park District. “Most of this trail is proposed to utilize public right-of-way,” she said. The trail would include retrofitting of the Bloomington Avenue bridge over Highway 62 that connects Minneapolis and Richfield, as well as a new bridge over 494 to connect Bloomington and Richfield, Grissman explained. Using Taft Park and Richfield Parkway on Richfield’s north side, the trail would parallel Old Cedar Avenue from 66th Street to 76th Street.
Medicine collection a success BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS On June 2, in the parking lot to the Richfield Ice Arena, the Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office and Hennepin County held a Medicine Collection Event. According to Richfield Director of Public Safety Barry Fritz, 371 people dropped off medicine at the Richfield event. There were 77 pounds of controlled medications collected, according to Hennepin County reports. The top three categories of controlled medications collected were Hydrocodone, including: Lorcet and Vicodin; Oxycodone, including: OxyContin and Percocet; and Codeine, including: Cosanyl and Robitussin. “This collection event helped to reduce the supply of medications that might have wound up in the wrong hands and misused or abused by teens,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek. “People who participated in the event safely disposed of medications that are most often diverted for illegal sale or abuse.” Eleven barrels of over-the-counter medications were collected including items such as cough syrup, vitamins/supplements and pet medications, according to Hennepin County.
“I think this event was very successful. It was organized wonderfully and the drop off was very efficient,” Fritz said. The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office, Environmental Services, and the city of Richfield were sponsors of the collection. Other partners included North Memorial Hospital/Partnership for Change, University of Minnesota pharmacy students, the University of Minnesota Medical Reserve Corps, and Clean Harbors Environmental Services. All items collected will be taken to incinerators for destruction, which is the most environmentally friendly method of disposal, according to Hennepin County. The county urges residents not to flush medicines down the drain or to throw them in the garbage because medications in wastewater or in landfills can contaminate bodies of water, harm wildlife and end up in drinking water supplies. Future collections will be held in the metro area in order to dispose of medications in a safe and legal manner. Two additional collection events will take place in the fall in St. Louis Park and Orono. Info: hennepin.us/medicine.

Lake FROM PAGE 1 Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska, Thompson said, which will use it as compost. The few bogs that were marked for removal amount to approximately 1,500 square-feet, according to a watershed district project report. The Red Rock Lake work is one of several watershed district projects in southwest metro lakes, said Mark Enochs, who works as the watershed district’s chief engineer and is an employee with engineering company CH2M Hill. A sample of other watershed district projects, according to Enochs: looking into potential improvements for fish passage between Lake Riley and Rice Marsh Lake; conducting curly leaf pondweed harvesting in Mitchell lake; and working with the University of Minnesota to research carp activity in Staring Lake and the Purgatory Creek recreation area, which is just upstream from Staring Lake. The watershed district will be doing a carp harvest this winter, possibly in January or February. Carp overpopulation leads to excess phosphorous reaching the lake surface after the fish stir up the lake floor. Phosphorous leads to algae growth and other problems, Enochs said. “[Harvesting is] significant because removal of the carp is important before we begin any in-lake water quality improvement projects,” Enochs said. On a hot, Monday, June 6, Rick Thompson, owner of Midwest Weed Harvesting, dumps a chunk of broken bog from Red Rock Lake into a trailer, which will be hauled to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum where it will be used as compost. The lake has had a few bogs floating around the lake and running into docks and causing other nuisances.
Rick Thompson, left, uses a skid loader to break apart a bog that Justin Kemper, right, dragged to the shoreline using the harvester. Thompson is the owner of Midwest Weed Harvesting, which was hired to remove the bogs and also harvest the invasive species curly leaf pondweed, which will most likely take place later this month.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-
tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Bloomington to become ‘Yellow Ribbon City’ BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Family members of active military personnel overseas often worry about the safety and welfare of their husband, wife, father or mother during the months they spend in Afghanistan or Iraq. When those soldiers aren’t worrying about their safety, they often worry about how things are back at home in the absence. The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program connects families with services and resources while a service member is away from home, and offers support services to families when the service member returns home. This week Bloomington is kicking off its Yellow Ribbon City organizational campaign. Nancy Ludvigsen of Bloomington is among the volunteers launching the city’s program. Ludvigsen, who works in Lakeville, has been a volunteer with that city’s program. She’s now helping organize Bloomington’s campaign. From providing day care assistance to connecting parents with health care resources, the Yellow Ribbon network is intended to assist families with
addressing a variety of needs. “All they need to do is give us a call,” Ludvigsen said. Yellow Ribbon programs work with corporations, faith-based organizations, medical and social services organizations and community volunteers to provide resources for military families, she explained. In addition to assisting families during a service member’s absence, the program also supports reintegration services for military personnel who have returned to civilian life. Bloomington City Councilmember Vern Wilcox, a military veteran, is helping to organize Bloomington’s program. Interest in the program dates back more than a year, but it was important that the program be volunteer driven rather than organized by city staff, Wilcox explained. “This is not to be on the taxpayer dime,” he said. “We want strictly volunteers.” The program is being set up as a
nonprofit organization, initially under the oversight of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW will oversee donations to the program and maintain them as a separate fund for the Yellow Ribbon program. Eventually the program will have its own governing board for program oversight, Wilcox explained. Program volunteers will screen service providers to ensure the privacy of families who call for assistance, according to Ludvigsen. “Being protective of information is vital in what we do,” she said. The Yellow Ribbon program began in Farmington and now has more than 25 participating cities. Information about the program is available online at beyondtheyellowribbon.org. To volunteer contact Ludvigsen at 612-839-0440 or nancyludvigsen @edinarealty.com, or Wilcox at 952-8541425 or vfwilcox@aol.com.

Trio to be sentenced next month for roles in extortion BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Three people who have pleaded guilty to charges in an extortion case that led to the suicide of a 57-year-old Bloomington man will be sentenced next month. Two women pleaded guilty to reduced charges while a Rosemount man pleaded guilty to one count of coercion. Charges against a fourth person were dropped. Rickey Pouncil, 46, of Rosemount pleaded guilty March 23 to one count of coercion. Christina Artac, 32, of St. Louis Park and Shannon Gura, 27, with no known permanent address, pleaded guilty to one count of abetting coercion, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. In May 2010 the Bloomington man was found dead on park property along Bloomington’s river valley. His vehicle was parked nearby. Inside a note read “I am being extorted over $500,000. Best for my family and friends.” The man died by shooting himself with a shotgun, according to Bloomington investigators.
Investigators determined the man was the target of extortion as a result of having sexual relations with a prostitute. Investigators connected the foursome to the victim through phone records before and after the man was found dead, according to the complaints. Pouncil was arrested after his phone was connected to calls made to the victim. A search warrant executed at Pouncil’s residence turned up printouts of sexually explicit text messages determined to be between the victim and the prostitute, according to the complaint against Pouncil. He said that he was holding copies of the text messages for a prostitute that had extorted $500,000 from the victim. He was to receive some of the money, but the prostitute disappeared without paying him, he told investigators. Pouncil will be sentenced July 25. Artac will be sentenced July 26. Gura will be sentenced July 28. Charges against Jordan Rognrud, 29, of Minneapolis were dismissed in August.

Swim Safety from the Sheriff’s Office The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office is reminding citizens that swim safety requires active supervision. One adult should be assigned to focus on kids in the water. Parents are urged to create a swim safety plan for their families.
In 70 percent of cases where toddlers drowned, one or both parents were nearby. Being nearby isn’t enough. Here are some safety tips: • A responsible adult should be assigned to focus on children — in or near the water. • The assigned adult should not be talking on a cell phone, reading a magazine or closing his or her eyes for sunbathing. • Rotate this responsibility so children always have a fresh set of eyes watching them. • Swim in areas with lifeguards on duty for added safety, but don’t rely on lifeguards to watch your children. Active supervision is needed even when there are lifeguards on duty. • Teach your children to swim. • Inexperienced swimmers may wear lifejackets in swimming pools. Parents must use active supervision even when children are wearing lifejackets. • Do not rely on water wings or other devices. • Learn CPR. • Keep safety equipment — such as a shepherd’s hook — near pools. Eden Prairie, in a class of its own...
E
den Prairie residents don’t have to be told they live in one of the best cities in the country. But, they have been told that, anyway. Eden Prairie, home to some 60,000 residents, several diverse businesses, excellent schools and numerous public spaces, is locally and nationally lauded as one of the best cities to live in. Even with the regional and national attention, residents themselves also find it a great place to live. In a 2010 survey, 98 percent of residents found the quality of life in Eden Prairie as good or excellent. Less than 20 miles Southwest of Minneapolis, the city is accessible by several highways, such as Minnesota State Highways 62, highways 169 and 212 and Interstate 494. For some of the 2,200 businesses in the city (including Super Valu, ADC and the Minnesota Vikings), The Flying Cloud Airport is a great travel service. The airport is also a hub for recreational fliers. For those traveling closer to home, the SouthWest Transit system is one of the finest busing and transportation systems

Eden Prairie Eden Prairie is known around the region as one of the premier cities and one of the best suburbs in the Twin Cities. It’s also been recognized nationally for its top-notch schools, diverse businesses, excellent community safety, great city services, expansive trails and beautiful parks. Starting this week, this “Focus on Eden Prairie” page, we will feature one community segment that makes this city so desirable and nationally recognized. We will offer information about Eden Prairie’s acclaimed schools, trails, parks, community centers and churches. We’ll profile the police and fire departments, highlight the libraries, touch on Eden Prairie history and much more. This week, it is a look inside city hall.
for those commuting into and out of the city for work or fun. Highways and travel routes don’t necessarily mean congestion. Eden Prairie has more than 170 miles of trails and 2,250 acres of parkland. The city also operates numerous facilities that community members can utilize, including the Eden Prairie Community Center, Senior

More than 300 sixth-grade students from Valley View Middle School in Edina, as well as teachers and parents, spent Friday, May 27, helping out at Eden Wood Center in Eden Prairie. Eden Wood Center, operated by nonprofit organization Friendship Ventures, provides seasonal camp programs and year-round respite care weekends for children, teens and adults with developmental and physical disabilities. The Valley View day of service was the culmination of a yearlong sixth-grade service-learning project, which connects students to their communities by integrating service projects with classroom learning. During the year students participated in classroom lessons about invasive species, disability awareness and plant cycles. Students worked all day pulling buckthorn and mustard garlic from the wooded areas and hiking trails at Eden Wood, and planted wheelchair-accessible gardens and flowers throughout the camp with seedlings they started in class. Students also spent time hearing from parents of children with developmental disabilities, or viewing a pantomime about sharing gifts. After the presentations, students discussed disabilities and the gifts people with disabilities share. Summer camps at Eden Wood Center begin June 12. Info: friendshipventures.org.

FROM PAGE 3 level. The school board is expected to make a referendum decision during its June 21 meeting, but has until August to make a final decision. The board gave no strong indication of where it stood on approving the referendum after the discussion, but board members Holly Parker and Carol Bomben said not going out for a referendum could show a lack of support to staff and teachers, who have had their wages frozen to help stabilize the budget. Asking taxpayers for money that would go beyond general operations could also be difficult in the economic and political climate, board member Kim Ross said.
23
Board member Ranee Jacobus said she would like to see the district live within its means and make the $6 million in cuts, even if a referendum is approved. Chuck Mueller said he was interested in getting other board members’ input about including ballot questions regarding Performing Art Center renovations and converting the recently-approved K6 elementary school model to a K-5, with Central Middle School housing grades 68. There was little input about the grade reconfiguration. Magnuson said the board had not shown interest in putting a question about Performing Art Center renovations on the ballot. Preparing project specifications and a mandatory review by the Minnesota Department of Education could take time, she said.

Eden Prairie fell one victory short of achieving its goal of winning the state boys lacrosse championship. The second-seeded Eagles (15-3) lost a 93 decision to top-seeded and defending champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s (18-0) in the state title game June 9 at Chanhassen High School. Eden Prairie reached the state finals by beating third-seeded White Bear Lake 5-4 in the semifinals June 7. “We were disappointed that we couldn’t win it all,” said Eden Prairie head coach Ryan Ward. “But this team made great improvement and was light years ahead of where it was when practice began this spring. “We lose a lot of seniors off this squad but have quite a few players back from this tournament squad that made a ton of progress this season.” Benilde won 10-6 over Eden Prairie during a regular-season game. And the Red Knights were just as tough when the state championship was on the line. BSM led 4-2 at halftime and played solidly in the second half to add on to that lead. Junior Patrick McFadden, senior Davis Snyder and senior Mitch Hugdahl scored Eden Prairie goals. The Eagles drew praise from winning BSM coach Colin Mulcahy. “Eden Prairie has an incredible lacrosse program,” said Mulcahy. “It is always fun playing against a competitive team like it has.” Eden Prairie pulled out a late-game win over White Bear Lake in the semifinals. Sophomore midfielder Jake Woodring scored the winning goal with 10.8 seconds remaining in regulation. He finished with two goals. Senior attack Matt Hugdahl, senior midfielder Mitch Hugdahl and senior midfielder Riley Boehm provided other Eagle goals. Eden Prairie senior goaltender Jared Klapperich stopped 10 shots. “We had a lot of scoring opportunities but ran into a hot goalie,” said Eden Prairie assistant coach Scott Hugdahl. “However, we hung in there and called a timeout with the score tied at 4-4 late in the game. “We designed a play and it worked for the winning goal.” Woodring was named to the all-state tournament squad.

Section 2 champion Eden Prairie will play Rochester Century in the state quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. Winner of that game meets Burnsville or Bemidji in the semifinals at noon Friday, June 17, at Midway Stadium. Eden Prairie and Burnsville met in last year’s championship game and are favored to win their quarterfinal games. Eden Prairie boasts one of the state’s strongest and deepest pitching staffs. Top starters are Adam Bray and Tyler Ruemmele. Lance Thonvold and Grant Soderberg have been valuable as starters and relievers as the Eagles enter state competition with a 21-5 record.
Kennedy is surprise team Bloomington Kennedy enters the state Class 3A baseball tourney as underdogs. But the Eagles are used to that role after winning the Section 6 title as a 10th seed. Kennedy, 12-14 overall, will be the underdog again in a 3 p.m. state quarterfinal game Thursday against one of the topranked teams, Maple Grove, at Midway Stadium. Winner of that game advances to the semifinals against Stillwater or Forest Lake at 2:30 p.m. Friday. State championship game is 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Target Field.

Eagles settle for second at state girls lacrosse tourney BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie met its match in the state girls lacrosse tournament finals against its longtime nemesis. The second-seeded Eagles lost 11-9 to top-seeded Blake in the state championship game June 10 at Chanhassen High School. Eden Prairie reached the finals after defeating third-seeded Stillwater 14-10 in the semifinals June 8. Eden Prairie, 15-2, finished second at state for the second consecutive season. Last year, Blake beat the Eagles 11-10 for the championship. “Blake is a great team with a lot of offensive weapons,” said Eden Prairie co-head coach Judy Baxter. “We turned the ball over 20 times and you can’t expect to beat a talented team like Blake that way. “Blake probably scored nine goals as the result of those turnovers. But it was a great game.” Eden Prairie led 3-1 early before Blake built a 9-5 halftime lead.
Senior Riley Allen led the Eagles with four goals. Sophomore Emma Claire Fontenot contributed two goals and two assists. Senior Taylor Uhl scored twice and junior Christine Easton had one goal. Sophomore goalie McKenzie Johnson finished with five saves. Easton and Fontenot were named to the all-tournament team. Eden Prairie had a 9-2 halftime lead in its semifinal game before Stillwater made things interesting in the second half. Easton finished with six goals and one assist. Her six goals were one short of a tournament record. Fontenot had three goals and four assists. Anna Johnson, a ninth-grader, had a hat trick. Uhl chipped in with two goals and two assists. McKenzie Johnson made nine saves. “This was a fast-paced game and we responded well to Stillwater’s offensive pressure,” said Baxter. “Haylie Honn did a good job defending Stillwater’s top offensive player.”
The Eden Prairie senior was comedalist in the Class 3A, Section 2 girls tournament June 2 and 6, shooting rounds of 80 and 74 for a 154 total. The Eagles won the team title.
Austin Wilson Wilson shot rounds of 76 and 69 for a 36-hole total score of 145 to earn medalist honors at the Class 3A, Section 2 boys golf tournament June 2 and 6 at Oakdale Golf Course. Wilson also helped lead Eden Prairie to the section team championship.
Jake Woodring The Eden Prairie sophomore midfielder scored two goals, including the game-winner, during the Eagles’ 5-4 state boys lacrosse semifinal victory over White Bear Lake June 7 at Chanhassen High School. Woodring was named to the alltournament team.
Riley Allen Allen, a senior, scored four goals in Eden Prairie’s 11-9 loss to Blake in the state girls lacrosse championship game June 10 at Chanhassen High.

Eden Prairie is headed back to state to defend its Class 3A baseball title. The Eagles did it the hard way, coming through the losers’ bracket to win the Section 2 championship. Eden Prairie, 21-5, needed to defeat Chanhassen twice in the double-elimination, final-four portion of the section playoffs. The Eagles responded with dominating victories. Eden Prairie routed Chanhassen 15-2 June 7 at Round Lake Stadium and came back to defeat the Storm 7-1 June 8 in the true championship game. Eden Prairie advances to the Class 3A quarterfinals against Rochester Century at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. The winner plays in the semifinals at noon Friday, June 17, at Midway against Burnsville or Bemidji. Eden Prairie defeated Burnsville 7-5 in the state title game a year ago. The Class 3A championship game is 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Target Field. Maple Grove, Bloomington Kennedy, Stillwater and Forest Lake are other state entrants. “Our goal was to get back to state this season and the guys responded well to that challenge,” said Eden Prairie head coach Mike Halloran. “It is quite an accomplishment to qualify for state competition three years in a row.” Eden Prairie received superb pitching and timely hitting against Chanhassen in the final rounds. Tyler Ruemmele pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven as the Eagles defeated Chanhassen 7-1 in the title game.
Eden Prairie broke the game open by scoring six runs in the third inning. Lance Thonvold connected for a tworun double and Adam Bray followed with a double that scored one. Danny Blasy capped the outburst with a tworun homer. Chanhassen scored its lone run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly. The Eagles answered with a runscoring single by Adam Bray in the bottom of that inning. Ruemmele scored after reaching base on a double. “I had great defense behind me tonight,” said Ruemmele. “I knew we had a great team. “Getting to the state finals again at Target Field has been our goal since the season began.” Thonvold, a University of Minnesota recruit, added, “Our backs were against the wall against Chanhassen, but we retained our focus and got going with the bats.” Bray pitched a complete game the night before as the Eagles beat Chanhassen 15-2 in five innings. He struck out five and allowed four hits. Thonvold supplied a two-run homer. Grant Soderberg, Bray and Ruemmele had three hits each. Tony Skjefte, another U of M recruit, added two hits. “I thought our loss [6-4] to Prior Lake earlier in the section playoffs was a fluke,” said Bray, headed to South Dakota State on a baseball scholarship. “We probably have more tournament experience on this team than we did last year. “We have gotten contributions from a lot of different guys and are hitting the ball well at the right time of the season.” The Eagles need two more solid performances and victories to get another opportunity to play for the championship at Target Field.
Sandle soars to state triple jump title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Thanks to an outstanding performance by senior Mike Sandle, the Eden Prairie boys track team tied for third in the state AA meet June 10-11 at Hamline University. Eden Prairie and Park of Cottage Grove both had 42 points. Stillwater won the team title with 47 points and Wayzata placed second (43). Sandle successfully defended his state triple jump title with a first-place effort of 49-feet, 4-inches. He holds the all-time state record of 50-4 1/2. Sandle also added valuable team points by placing fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.56 seconds). TRACK: TO PAGE 27
