Developments could get city approval

BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS UnitedHealth Group Inc. wants to build a 1.4 millionsquare-foot office building in Eden Prairie; a Ford dealership is looking to construct a new building, and a church could give way to 16 new residential properties – the Eden Prairie City Council could have a few plans to consider during its July 19 meeting.

Another project, an addition to GE Capital’s Fleet Services division, could be up for approval during an August city council meeting, according to City Planner Mike Franzen. GE could use the space to showcase electric vehicles to its fleet management customers and others.

UnitedHealth Complex One of the proposed projects is a UnitedHealth Group corporate complex that could house nearly 6,650 people in four buildings, according to a letter from UnitedHealth’s development consultant, Westwood Professional Services, Inc. The building would be located on United-owned property off Highway 62 and Shady Oak Road on the Northeast corner of Eden Prairie.

The UnitedHealth Group plans are expected to be on the July 19 city council agenda, about a month and a half after UnitedHealth’s Optum solidified the purchase of the former ADC Telecommunications building in Eden Prairie.

The people and planes that have made history will make an appearance at the AirExpo 2011, hosted by Wings of the North, July 16 and 17 at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie.

“It’s kind of like a community fair. It just happens to have an aviation theme,” said Wings of the North President Bob Jasperson.

It will be especially meaningful for World War II veterans and the local history buffs and onlookers who would like to see and honor them.

Well, Eden Prairie dreamers, say hello to FNS Delivery. The drivers pick up food from wherever you want – whether it’s fast food or fine dining – and for $5 they will take it to you.

It’s just about that simple.

FNS, short for Food and Stuff, started with hotel deliveries in Eden Prairie last fall.

Luke Katuin, the 29-year-old who had the idea, started a similar operation in Mankato while attending college there.

But, it didn’t get busy enough to fit his definition of success, he said.

“My wife graduated college, moved up here, so the FNS dream in Mankato died,” Katuin said.

So, when they moved to the Twin Cities, he didn’t know how to apply the

idea to such a large area.

Then, he visited a former co-worker and friend, Elijah Edwards, who was working at a hotel front desk in Eden Prairie.

Hotel guests kept coming down, asking where to get food in the area, Katuin said.

Edwards would tell guests there aren’t any options within walking distance, and basically just pizza and subs can be delivered.

Once a month, they also surprise someone with a free lunch. They ask customers to nominate someone who deserves a free lunch, find out the best time and location to deliver it, and surprise them with the food, balloons and other fanfare, Katuin said. They are also armed with a video camera to capture the surprise. knew the city had more to offer than that.

After seeing people walk away defeated and unsatisfied, it sparked an answer to his question about infiltrating the Twin Cities with his delivery business.

“I said, ‘Elijah, eureka. You’ve done it.

You’re my partner. You’ve done it,’” Katuin said.

It was simple. They would start delivering food – food from any restaurant in the area – to hotel guests.

Edwards became his partner, along with a third, Alex Sanchez, who takes

care of the FNS website and helps with other operations, Edwards said.

After helping hotel guests and gaining some momentum from front-desk workers who recommended their delivery service, they moved on to Eden Prairie residents.

Rather than expand to hotels outside Eden Prairie, the idea was to “bring everything in Eden Prairie to Eden Prairie,” Katuin said.

By delivering food from Eden Prairie restaurants to Eden Prairie residents, they could keep delivery times down and not worry about delivering too far away.

With a strong Twitter, Facebook and website presence, along with growing word-of-mouth and catchy promotions, the business keeps growing every month, Katuin said.

They have an office in Edina; they have hired independent-contract drivers; expanded to West Bloomington and soon Hopkins; and they have partnered with 18 Eden Prairie restaurants and 11 West Bloomington restaurants in particular, DELIVERY: TO PAGE 14

Eden Prairie man dies after alleged overdose

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS A woman held in a jail for alleged third-degree murder in Eden Prairie was released Friday, July 8, pending criminal charges, which are expected to file once toxicology reports from her deceased 42-year-old husband are complete, according to city spokeswoman Katie Beal.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested following a 42-year-old man’s death after Eden Prairie authorities responded to a reported drug overdose the evening of Wednesday, July 6, according to Beal.

It is unclear what drugs were involved in the incident, and the toxicology report, which would indicate what drugs were in the man’s body, could take a couple weeks to complete, Beal said. Authorities are waiting on the toxicology report before filing any charges.

Police initially did not state the relationship between the man and woman, but Beal said Monday that they were

married.

Eden Prairie dispatch received the call around 11 p.m. Wednesday regarding an alleged overdose on the 15600 block of North Hillcrest Court, according to Beal.

The man was unconscious and transported to Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, where he was pronounced dead, Beal said.

The woman was arrested at the scene and was being held in a Hennepin County jail on probable cause of thirddegree murder, Beal said. Jail records indicate she was booked at 7:13 a.m.

Thursday.

Since no charges were filed, she was released just before 7 p.m. Friday.

Another adult female and a child were also present, but she was not taken into custody, Beal said.

Eden Prairie police and the Hennepin County Sheriff's crime lab are investigating the incident, so no further details could be provided, Beal said.

Uniform drive helps outfit scout for camp

BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kris Hinderscheid of Hastings is the treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 534. Her family goes through a lot of uniforms.

She and her husband have four sons who have all been involved in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts. The boys outgrow uniforms quickly. Kris’s husband also volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster and must wear a uniform.

When Kris’s oldest son, 13-year-old Kalvin, was nominated by his scoutmaster to attend the exclusive, week-long Grey Wolf Leadership Camp in Wisconsin this year, he needed to be outfitted with a full uniform first.

“We wanted to make sure he had everything he needed,” she said.

Hinderscheid believes the uniform is an important part of the Scouting experience.

“When the boys wear the uniform, they should be wearing it with pride,” she

said.

Kalvin thinks the uniform is an identifying mark for Scouts and it lets others know “that guy’s in Scouts.”

Hinderscheid was willing to invest in the full outfit for Kalvin, which includes shirts, a neckerchief, shorts, pants, socks and headgear. But buying everything new would have placed some financial pressure on the single-income household.

Hinderscheid turned to the Boy Scouts Northern Star Council uniform exchange program. The exchange program is available twice a month and allows scouts to come to the office in Golden Valley and find used uniforms for free with a suggested donation if the family feels able to give.

The program is supported largely by uniform donations collected during the Scouting for Uniforms campaign held by the Northern Star Council and Pilgrim Cleaners during the month of July.

Hinderscheid reached out to other

members of Troop 534 and collected a list of “orders” of items needed by scouts in the area. Then three families made the trek to visit the exchange and fill as many orders as they could.

Kalvin found everything he needed, and Hinderscheid estimates that about 12 other scouts in the troop also received needed pieces for their uniforms.

“It’s a great program,” Hinderscheid said. “It’s a blessing for many people.”

She estimates that paying the suggested donations for uniforms cost her less than an eighth of the price for new uniforms.

“For us to be able to outfit our son to have the privilege to go to camp was huge,” she said.

Hinderscheid said when her boys are done with a uniform, they pass it on to others. She appreciates how the exchange program makes it easy to share uniforms with those who need them.

“I just think that it gives you an oppor-

tunity to give back, and it makes it very affordable for families, especially in this economy,” she said. “And there’s no sense in wasting items … someone should be able to reuse them.”

It’s especially easy to donate uniforms during the month of July. Uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com.

What are you doing to MY state park?

Editor’s note: I’m not going to deal with the nitty-gritty of the state shutdown. Mostly, because politics are a tricky animal, and I won’t pretend I have any sort of solution for the current predicament. There are other related issues, however, that really get my goat and need addressing.

I’m bummed about the Minnesota state shutdown.

Mostly bummed because it means my favorite summer activity — heading to William O’Brien State Park in Marineon-St. Croix, Minn. — isn’t possible at the moment. But I’m particularly upset because I had a sneaking suspicion the

shutdown and subsequent closure of the parks would leave a gaping hole wherein low-life vandals could step in and harm something important to me as a nature enthusiast and Minnesotan.

In case you didn’t hear, numerous media outlets are reporting extensive vandalism at Afton State Park, damage to Department of Natural Resources facilities in Grand

Marais and other issues at parks across the state.

Absolutely senseless and pointless acts that served only to ruin a shared natural resource.

I love state parks. I feel at home in them so it’s tough to avoid the “get-off-my-lawnyou-kids” impulse here.

Setting aside, for a moment, the fact that as a state resource, the parks are funded at last partially through tax dollars making it silly for Hoodlum A to destroy public property that Hoodlum A (assuming he pays taxes) would have to help fund to repair, the main issue to me is the idea that the minute some-

one isn’t watching it’s somehow permissible to forget all societal mores and act like yahoos.

Public property, be it a state park or an interstate highway, exists as a service we provide ourselves. We, the taxpayers, fund these public facilities with the common goal of all being able to access the outdoors or drive across the country. We, the taxpayers, are responsible for responsible use of such facilities.

It’s a sad day when the minute our collective backs (in the form of park personnel) are turned some people feel the need or desire to rampage through our mutual property.

Recently, the Eden Prairie school administration spent $20,000 on a survey to rank various “talking points” on their ability to convince taxpayers to support a proposed referendum.

This is in addition to the $50,000 the administration is spending for a consultant to tell taxpayers what to “think, feel, and do” as described by one school board member.

These talking points present only one side of the story. Before you vote on the referendum this fall, do your research, ask your board members questions and do not accept “non-answers.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Birch Island Woods parking lot would hurt its integrity To the editor: Eden Prairie resident Jeff Strate has been keeping me updated on the Birch Island Woods since the days of its arduous creation and subsequent outside development threats. Most recently, he informed me about the controversial proposal to put a parking lot inside this otherwise peaceful area.

Jeff and I share land use issues in the Southwest and Northeast suburbs. I currently serve on Lake Elmo’s Parks Commission and was a council member for 16 years. We’ve both toured our respective open spaces and trails with consideration for habitat preservation, as well as public access and the long-term benefit to our residents.

Your Birch Island Woods is a

treasure, and I share the concerns of Jeff and others addressed in local newspapers and before the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District – which is apparently prepared to enable the parking lot construction with a $25,000 grant.

The use of water quality improvement funds to facilitate a parking lot in a conservation area is a new concept to me, and an expansion of the taxing authority of watershed districts that I hope is not shared with my district.

Eden Prairie is widely regarded as one of the metro area’s bestplanned cities, but I agree with Jeff that while parking lots are necessary in large recreational parks, they are rarely needed in small conservation spaces such as the Birch Island Woods. This preserve, and others like it, should remain the green places that are the lungs of a healthy city. Anything that detracts from this showcase of habitat restoration projects that Jeff has shep-

Letters to the editor: We really do love them The primary reason I and my coworkers write personal columns (they’re not editorials) for this page is to encourage readers to respond.

It’s not easy. It seems no matter how outlandish we get, the feedback is minimal.

Sometimes the responses we do get are bizarre.

Generally the reactions fall into two categories. The first is totally disheartening. You research and write your guts out about a topic of interest and receive an email that says “in paragraph six you used ‘upon’ instead of ‘on.’ Is English your native language?

Who proofreads this rag?”

Yikes. No mention of what the writer might have thought about the topic. Just kvetching.

what to do in their place. The place is usually under the jackboot of the person using the term.

Actually, my plea to ban fireworks had nothing to do with the nanny state. You see, idiots who abuse fireworks cause buildings to burn down. Each time one catches fire, my tax dollars or yours (depending on where you live) are expended to pay salaries for firefighters.

Taxpayer-funded police and fire departments both got involved in Fargo over the July 4 holiday when a man was struck and killed by a mortarstyle firework.

So my column was more of a plea to eliminate one more thing taxpayers have to support with their hard-earned dollars. Quite different from the idea of a nanny state. Heck,

administration has not confirmed the number of students that will be leaving our district this fall, it is estimated to be more than 300 students representing more than $1.5 million annually in lost funding.

One referendum proposal would increase taxes on a median priced home by $172 per year. For perspective, it would take 29 taxpayers paying $172 more per year to make up for the $5,000 in lost funding associated with just one lost student and 8,700 taxpayers to compensate for 300 lost students. Is it the responsi-

bility of taxpayers to compensate for this administration’s inability to retain students in our district?

For three decades I have paid property taxes and have generally supported school referendums.

However, taxpayers should insist on greater transparency, accountability and responsiveness before entrusting this administration with increased tax funding. Let’s set the right course before we spend more money.

Twin Cities Show Chorus sees success in competition, charity work

BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Winning is important, but it is not everything as the Twin Cities Show Chorus is all about the joy of singing.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus is a chapter in the Canadian-American Region Six and is affiliated with the global singing organization known as Sweet Adelines International.

The group features women from the ages of 18 to 80 among its more than 65 members.

Traveling from as far as Wisconsin and as close as Richfield, Edina and Bloomington, the Twin Cities Show Chorus rehearses every Tuesday night from 7-10 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Peace in Richfield or the Calvary Lutheran Church in Edina.

Celebrating 35 years together, the group is led by Master Director Judy Olson.

“We have been lucky to have an artistic director that can really dance,” member and Lead Section Coordinator Wendy Hamilton said.

Olson is an accomplished choreographer and a member of the Sweet Adelines International Music Faculty.

Traveling frequently, Olson coaches choruses and quartets in staging, choreography and performance techniques.

The Twin Cities Show Chorus is not just a group of women who just want to sing, they are a support group and a team, according to Hamilton.

In 1993, Hamilton was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I didn’t need to find a support group. These women are my support group,” Hamilton said of the chorus helping her through her time of need.

was named the 2010 Regional Champions and will go on to compete in Houston, Texas, against 50 other choruses in October.

Former Toro engineer honored for inventiveness

BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER In Dick Thorud’s world of ideas, there’s always a better way.

During his 34 years as a design and research engineer for the Toro Company, building a better lawn mower or snow thrower was his goal.

Creative problem-solving was his method.

“I didn’t know that they would work,” said Thorud of his inventions. “That’s the excitement of the whole thing, that sometimes you can come up with great ideas.

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.”

Thorud was a prolific inventor, earning 78 U.S. and international patents, said Larry Buckley, division counsel for Toro.

Many of Thorud’s innovations are still used in Toro products and they played an important part in the company’s success in the residential lawn mower and snow thrower markets, Buckley said. Last year, the Bloomington-based company reported $1.7 billion in sales.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Thorud was inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in June. The Bloomington resident retired from Toro in 2000.

Working as senior principal research

engineer at Toro’s research and development unit, Thorud was free to explore ideas and research market trends before developing full-size prototypes and testing them in the field. But he also worked on projects assigned by the marketing department, with the goal of creating high-quality products that consumers would buy.

Thorud drew on his art training to fuel his creativity. As a student at South High School and Augsburg College in Minneapolis, he took courses in art as well as advanced math and science, and later earned a fine arts undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.

“I had dual interests. I liked the creative freedom you had in art and I also liked the discipline that came in mathematics and sciences,” said Thorud, 77.

Although Thorud didn’t have an engineering degree, his curiosity and enthusiasm for learning spurred him to take short courses at area colleges in fields like hydraulics, plastics and internal combustion engines.

Art was a key to his success. He created concept sketches and built miniature clay models in his office, effective tools to persuade co-workers and bosses that his conTORO: TO PAGE 13

He created a cartoon strip modeled after the “Calvin and Hobbes” comic series to explain the then-novel concept of mulching. “I was able to visualize things in my mind and see them working,” he said. “You have an affinity for spatial relationships.”

That talent set Thorud apart from other engineers or technicians, said Buckley, a former Toro patent attorney.

“He just had this kind of artistic flair about inventing,” Buckley said. “He worked at that interface between technology and the arts.”

Buckley also remembers Thorud as soft-spoken and modest. ”I can’t recall him ever promoting himself,” Buckley said.

“Dick was always promoting his inventions, which you kind of have to do when you’re in research and development.”

Many of Thorud’s innovations were commercial successes, but he’s proudest of the ones that enhanced product safety or benefitted the environment.

In 1969, Thorud developed the “Guardian” line of mowers, which incorporated safety features designed to pre-

vent foot injuries and damage caused by debris thrown out of the mower’s path.

For the first time, rear safety shields and foot guards were added to the machines, and led to the development of new federal safety standards for the industry, he said.

The “Recycler” mulching system for lawn mowers was developed by 1988.

Before, grass clippings were collected in bags and hauled away to landfills, creating tons of waste. The new system chopped up the grass clippings into smaller pieces that could decompose and fertilize the lawn.

Since retiring, Thorud has had more time to spend with his wife Darlene, two adult children and five grandchildren.

He’s also filling his time with creative projects, including a one-man show of his photographs scheduled for early 2012 at the Bloomington Art Center. He’s also written, illustrated and self-published 10 books and is working on a 500-page book about creativity.

Creativity has always played an important role in Thorud’s life, whether it involved inventing new technology or more artistic projects. “The creative portion of the work is the same, whether you’re writing a book or writing an article or creating a photograph or a piece of sculpture,” he said. “It really doesn’t matter, because the creative part is always the same.”

Growth is easier with Katuin’s restaurant experience. At just 29-years-old, he has already had stints opening and running a Great Steak and Potato in Mankato and a Pita Pit near the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, so he knows how to relate to restaurant operators, he said.

During off-peak hours, they may have time to deliver food to people in Minnetonka, Hopkins, Chanhassen or other cities around Eden Prairie, but its not always doable if they’re busy, Katuin said, and they make that clear to customers in those areas.

Right now, they don’t have formal plans to expand in the Twin Cities, but Katuin said he’d like to. He just wants to make sure they have enough resources so things run smoothly in a new city.

“Our eventual goal is to obviously conquer the entire Twin Cities, and you know, make it a metro-wide thing,” Katuin said. “That will take some time, but we’ll continue to work on that.”

He’s also in the early stages of turning the operation into a franchise, Katuin said.

With the city council’s blessing, the Metropolitan Ford of Eden Prairie, 12790 Plaza Drive, would construct new digs a block down the road at 12475 Plaza Drive, where the Suburban Chevrolet dealership sits.

Tom Grossman, president of the Metropolitan Corporation, owns the Ford dealership and the lease on the space will expire soon, so he’s having a new, state-ofthe art dealership built on the 12475 Plaza Drive property, which he owns.

The proposed plans have the space listed around 39,500 square feet, about the same size as the current dealership, Grossman said.

“It will be a definite improvement over our current facility. There’s no question about that,” Grossman said.

The proposal also calls for a 1,000 square-foot addition to the 62,000-square-

Ford Dealership Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group purchased the 450,000-square-foot, former ADC complex in early June.

UnitedHealth staff wouldn’t disclose the sale price, but property records have a listed value of $44 million.

The facility is located 13625 Technology Drive and is expected to serve as company’s Optum headquarters, according to UnitedHealth spokesman Brian Kane.

Optum includes three health service businesses, OptumHealth, OptumInsight and OptumRx. Optum employs 4,500 people in the Twin Cities, and some of them are expected to fill the former ADC site’s 1,500 capacity.

The city’s Planning Commission approved the plans and they will go the council July 19 for approval, Grossman said if the city council approves the current plans, construction could begin in August with the goal of finishing the dealership by the end of March 2012.

A residential and GE Capital project The King of Glory Lutheran Church, located 17850 Duck Lake Trail, could make way for new residential lots on just over half of the 11.6-acre property.

If the city council approves the plan, the church would be demolished and make way for 16 single-family lots, said Scott Kipp, a senior planner with the city.

The other half of the property consists mainly of wetlands, he said. The area also abuts the city-owned Edenbrook Conservation area.

The city council could review the plans during the July 19 meeting.

Another addition includes a GE Capital

Eco Experience Center at the GE Capital Fleet headquarters in Eden Prairie. At the center, fleet service clients could learn about and test drive a variety of new electric and hybrid vehicles, which would include a road course where the vehicles could be test driven.

Proposed plans for the two-story addition include a garage for 12 cars, a 3,000 square-foot meeting space, a viewing deck and an indoor and outdoor vehicle “showcase.” The addition would also include other energy-saving technology, such as solar panels and a wind turbine.

GE Capital fleet group completed a nation-wide tour at its headquarters in Eden Prairie on Monday, introducing a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles to its clients.

Last year, GE Capital made a pledge to supply 25,000 electric vehicles to its clients and its own GE fleet by 2015, said fleet services marketing and strategy officer Deb Frodl.

Franzen said he expects the city council’s consideration of the project will take place in August, and if approved, GE may break ground shortly after that meeting.

The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces.

Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients.

3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown.

Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside.

Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs.

Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process.

The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. Dick Cole will be one of them, Jasperson said. He’s the 95-year-old who flew as a copilot in Doolittle Raid (named after pilot James “Jimmy” Doolittle) over Japan in 1942, which served as a moral victory for the United States following the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Jim Hill, a former member of the WWII Marine fighter squadron known as the “Black Sheep Squadron” and Jim Gomer, the last Tuskegee Airman from Minnesota, will also take part in the AirExpo, Jasperson said.

Another WWII veteran expected in attendance is Wayne Johnson, who was with the “Flying Tigers” during the war.

Aces expected to be in attendance include Air Force General Frederick “Boots” Blesse, a double ace in the F-86 Sabre Jet in the Korean War and Air Force Colonel Chuck DeBellevue, a top U.S. ace during the Vietnam War, according to Jasperson.

Also expected to attend are Don Cherry and Jeff Feinstein. In 1972, they flew an Air Force F-4 that shot down a MiG-21 over North Vietnam, and years later Cherry

found not only the F4 they flew, but the pilot they shot down over Vietnam, Jasperson said, and they have since become friends.

Also offering unique perspectives on historic events will be a NASA astronaut and two members of the select WWII women’s group, the Women Airforce Service Pilots.

The VIPs will be available to meet the public at AirExpo 2011 and take part in daily symposiums, scheduled noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. each day at the expo.

And, on Saturday, July 16, they will be seated among the public for the “US Bank Evening with Eagles” dinner event at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest, which is expected to sell out before the weekend, Jasperson said.

Of course, picturing the aviators’ stories may be easier after seeing some of the aircrafts they flew.

Of the approximately 40 aircraft expected, a couple of highlights will include the Tuskegee Airmen’s plane, the P-51-C Mustang and the “Yankee Lady,” a B-17 Bomber from the Yankee Air Museum in Michigan. Guests can buy a ticket to ride in either plane during the show, said Event Director Greg Kaminski.

“That’s a pretty big deal,” he said.

Collegiate newspaper abandons print edition

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS As far as funerals go, there wasn’t much sadness.

The Normandale Community College newspaper, Lions’ Roar, published its last edition in April. The paper, which dates back more than four decades, was published once every three weeks, featuring many of the traditional articles and features common to collegiate newspapers. But like major daily and community weekly newspapers around the country, the leadership of Lions’ Roar has stopped the presses.

The student media, however, isn’t going away. Since 2004 the college’s newspaper staff has had an online presence in addition to its traditional newspaper. There were several reasons why it made sense to shift the focus to the online content and away from the print product, according to faculty advisor Mark Plenke.

“This is a generation of people wedded to their iPhones,” Plenke said.

Whether it be through a mobile device

or a traditional computer, the Lions’ Roar website garners more than 1,000 unique visitors per month, he said.

Conversely the newspaper staff is recycling a greater percentage of the 2,000 papers printed every three weeks, he explained.

With the shift to an online format the Lions’ Roar staff will function more like a daily newspaper staff, according to Plenke.

Without collegiate sports to cover each week and little opportunity to cover breaking news for its print product, Lions’ Roar has operated more like a magazine, Plenke explained. Students have compensated by exploring perspectives about what happens on campus, but the end of the print product will bring a change in emphasis. Instead of the website being secondary to the print product, it will now be the sole focus of staff writers, allowing a focus similar to that of a daily newspaper, he said.

It was a change that wasn’t possible without discontinuing the print product, he noted. Providing daily content

online in addition to articles for the print edition was more work than the Lions’ Roar staff could handle. “It’s twice as much work, or more,” he said.

Most agreed, “This is the right time to do this.”

Discontinuing the print edition was not an economic decision. Sure, students were picking up the newspaper with less frequency, but the Lions’ Roar staff has an advantage over its commercial counterparts, it is the beneficiary of student fees to fund its staffing and daily operations. Advertising sold within the paper was comparable to the cost of printing it, so the news gathering functions shouldn’t be affected by the loss of print advertising revenue, Plenke explained.

The challenges of overseeing a digital news staff will be similar, however, to the challenges of the past several years.

Plenke – a communications department instructor – has been the Lions’ Roar advisor since 2003. Unlike four-year campuses where newspaper staffs are comprised largely of journalism department students, the Lions’ Roar staff is com-

prised of students who may have taken communications classes at the college, but haven’t had the benefit of two or three years of rigorous journalism instruction. “These are students who have not made up their mind about what their careers are going to be, for the most part,” he said.

In addition to teaching students how to construct a news article rather than an essay, there’s an annual turnover rate of about 90 percent, sometimes as high as 75 percent between semesters, he said.

Some students do move on to a fouryear school and pursue a journalism degree as a result of their Normandale experience, Plenke noted.

The college will be introducing five new digital media courses next year, so the conversion of the paper goes handin-hand with that, Plenke explained.

As they think about media careers, “this will be a better training ground for students,” Plenke said.

“You sort of get the double good out of this,” Kaminski said, since people will be able to see many aircrafts both up close and in the air.

And, even the historic planes will be in good shape. “If you come out and look at them, most of them look like they’re brand new,” Kaminski said.

Eden Prairie wins prestigious Firecracker baseball tourney title

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many of the elite American Legion baseball programs in the country head to Rapid City, S.D., each summer to compete in its prestigious July 4 weekend tournament.

Eden Prairie was one of those, and is hoping the South Dakota tournament will again be a springboard to more success.

Last year, Eden Prairie was one of five Rapid City Firecracker Legion Baseball Tournament teams that went on to win state titles.

Eden Prairie qualified for the American Legion World Series last season by winning state and regional championships. EP ended up second in the World Series.

Eden Prairie demonstrated it is a national Legion power again by winning the Firecracker Legion tournament with a 7-1 record.

EP infielder Tony Skjefte was named Most Valuable Player of the June 29-July 4 tourney.

Eden Prairie defeated Missoula, Mont., 9-6 in the title game.

“The boys came out ready to play in the Rapid City tournament,” said Eden Prairie coach Scott Hackett. “We had only one bad game.

“Everybody contributed to our championship and the guys played well.”

Skjefte impressed his coach and tournament fans with his performance.

“Tony had a great tournament,” said Hackett. “He batted about .500 and drove in

15 runs while also hitting four home runs in eight games.”

Jordan Smith was the winning pitcher for Eden Prairie in the title game. He struck out nine and allowed three hits and three runs in six innings. Lance Thonvold pitched one inning of relief.

Ryan Maenke had two hits and four RBI in the title game. Adam Bray had three hits. Anthony King-Foreman supplied two RBI and Skjefte drove in one run.

Eden Prairie’s offense clicked in the tournament. EP beat Coon Rapids 15-4 in the opener June 29.

Big week coming up in Minnesota golf State amateur, open championships to be held days apart

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The biggest week of the Minnesota golf season begins Monday, July 18, when the state’s top amateurs tee it up in White Bear Lake.

The Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship runs through Wednesday, July 20, at White Bear Yacht Club. On Friday, July 22, the Minnesota State Open, which brings together the

state’s best professionals and amateurs, starts at Rush Creek in Maple Grove.

Among players expected to compete in the MGA Amateur is Donald Constable, a former Minnetonka High School and University of Minnesota player who finished second in last year’s tournament at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton.

Tom Hoge, who won the MGA Amateur the last two years, will not be back to defend his title because he turned professional this spring.

Ryan Peterson of Eagan, who recently completed his college golf eligibility at Colorado State, finished third in last year’s tournament. Peterson won the

MGA Players’ Championship, a matchplay event, last month in Brainerd.

Former Wayzata High School and current University of Northern Iowa player Kyle Beversdorf also will be in the MGA Amateur. Beversdorf qualified for the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and reached the matchplay stage of the tournament.

The oldest player in the field might be Edina’s Richard Blooston, who made it into the tournament through a June 22 qualifier at Meadowbrook Golf Course.

Blooston first played in the MGA Amateur in 1963.

The field of 156 will try to figure out the nuances of White Bear Yacht Club,

designed in the early 20th century by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross. While some might consider it short by today’s standards at 6,471 yards, undulating fairways, blind shots and tricky greens are several features that could confound players.

MGA tournament director Doug Hoffmann said he anticipates some under-par scores but still expects the course to challenge players who routinely hit 300-yard drives.

Bloomington will be the focal point of slowpitch softball enthusiasts July 14-17.

The 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Tournament will be bigger and better than ever, according to director Jeff Barnes. The Bloomington native has either played in or managed the mid-summer softball extravaganza for much of its history.

This edition of the Firemen’s tourney has attracted 160 men’s, women’s and co-rec teams from all over the state and country. More than 20,000 fans, players and tournament volunteers are expected to attend the four-day event headquartered at Valley View Park.

“Our tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the state and the Upper Midwest,” said Barnes, who has directed the event since 1976.

“There is a 300-team tournament headquartered in Bismarck, N.D. “But that tournament is spread out on fields over a regional area instead of being located like we are in one city – Bloomington.

Our tournament is a summer reunion for players and spectators. We have fans that actually fly in to the Twin Cities to attend our event each year.”

The 160-team field includes Class A through Class D slowpitch softball teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada as well as squads from across the Twin Cities metro area and outstate Minnesota.

Many teams represent Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Richfield, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Burnsville,

Rosemount, Apple Valley and Lakeville.

Two all-star charity games kick off the Firemen’s tournament Thursday, July 14, at Valley View Park in Bloomington.

The opening all-star matchup pits the Bloomington Police against the Bloomington Firefighters at 6:30 p.m. on Red Haddox Field.

The Bloomington Police won last year’s allstar game.

A game featuring over-30 and under-30 allstar teams follows at 7:30 p.m. Last summer, the under-30 all-stars were victorious.

There will be a homerun derby open to all comers from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Valley View.

Double-elimination tournament competition begins at 6 p.m. Friday at Valley View and Dred Scott Fields in Bloomington. Action continues at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 16. Saturday’s final games start at 9:15 p.m.

All action Sunday, July 17, takes place at Valley View beginning at 8 a.m. Championship games are 3, 4 and 6 p.m.

There will be six tournament brackets – men’s Upper (32 teams), men’s Tier II (40 teams), men’s Tier III (36 teams), women’s Tier II (12 teams), women’s Tier III (16 teams) and co-rec (24 teams).

“Many teams use our tournament to prepare for post-season state and national competition,” said Barnes. “We work hard to maintain competitive balance in each of our brackets.

“We have a good mixture of experienced and young teams. And many of those younger squads want to get into our competitive upper brackets.”

All proceeds from the Firemen’s tournament are donated to youth organizations that provide volunteer assistance during the fourday event.

A number of players who have been on the PGA Tour or Champions Tour also have won the Minnesota State Open, including Tom Lehman, John Harris, Mike Morley, Joel Goldstrand, Ty Armstrong and Jon Chaffee.

Harris, who continues to compete on the Champions Tour, has entered

the state open. Shorewood resident Mario Tiziani, who has competed on the PGA Tour, also is in the tournament.

Edinburgh USA head professional Don Berry is a two-time Minnesota State Open champion. He is scheduled to play this year, as is Edinburgh USA’s director of instruction, Adam Gulli.

Also in the tournament is Bloomington native Jim Sorenson, who won the 1985 U.S. Public Links and the 1986 Minnesota State Open.

Sorenson isn’t playing many tournaments these days but is still a prominent figure in the game. If you see a television infomercial for a golf training device, chances are it was made by a company Sorenson founded – Momentus Golf in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Position Overview: Lead, direct, and manage the department personnel who are dedicated to Digi-Key systems and building maintenance. Evaluate, develop, implement and oversee all functions and procedures related to systems and building maintenance.
