years ago, and it has steadily grown since, said event co-chair and Lioness Jean Myers. She estimated that the event brings in 150-200 people. “It amazes me because I did not think it would go along this long,” Myers said. The tour usually features six homes, sometimes seven, and this year it will include gardens at five Eden Prairie homes and one Edina home.

There have only been a few homes that have been on the tour more than one year, and usually those gardens get revamped before its second appearance on the tour, Myers said. “One thing we do like is variety,” Myers said. “We don’t want them all professionally done, that are so manicured –

Eden Prairie to try drain tile to alleviate groundwater problems BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Several drainage complaints from Eden Prairie residents have led the city to attempt a drain-tile pilot project to alleviate over saturation in some areas. Some private property, streets and trails have been damaged from a “perfect storm” of wet conditions, said Rod Rue, city engineer and interim director of public works. The combination of sump pump compliance (as part of the city’s residential sump pump inspections), a wet spring and poor water infiltration into some neighborhoods’ soil has created the overly wet problems, he said. Many of the problems have occurred in the northwest part of the city, Rue said, which has a high groundwater table and its heavier soil doesn’t allow for easy water infiltration. Add water from sump pumps, which are constantly running in some homes, and that can create weakened roadways and damaged lawns. Rue said, engineering and public works staff have been surveying areas in the city for problems, but he didn’t speak specifically to the extent of the drainage issues. “There are areas throughout town that have problems,” he said. Since there will be mill and overlay

work on Westridge Drive, in the central part of the city, the pilot project will begin there, Rue said. They can get the drain tile in before the street gets overlay work completed. The pilot project will involve the installation of drain tile behind the curbs to alleviate the drainage issues, Rue outlined in a memo. The drain tile will include catch basins where adjacent residents can hook on their sump pump lines. A connection point for buried sump pumps is also expected, according to Rue. The system will allow water to drain alongside of the road rather than below the roads, sidewalks and trails, which weakens those structures. “Some of our main roads have drain tiles in them, but some of these neighborhood streets didn’t have drain tile to begin with,” Rue said. City staff, with the help of residents, have identified other areas that could benefit from the pilot project, so if it’s successful, the system could be installed elsewhere, Rue said. Project financing is expected through the city’s utility wastewater fund. The city will go out for construction quotes for the project, and Rue expects the city council will be given a recommendation during its July 19 meeting. Info: edenprairie.org.

The federal government will provide some assistance to the 175 Tyco Electronics, now known as TE Connectivity, workers laid off from Eden Prairie and Shakopee locations, but a looming Minnesota state government shutdown would delay the aid. The U.S. Department of Labor announced Monday, June 27, that a $557,433 National Emergency Grant was awarded to help the dislocated workers find jobs, receive job training and other assistance. Those services will go through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. DEED applied for the grant on behalf of the workers, according to Larry Eisenstadt, a DEED employment and training coordinator. “It was the extent of the layoff that probably allowed us to get that grant … the depth of the layoff in Eden Prairie and Shakopee,” Eisenstadt said. Eisenstadt said the workers will also be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits from the U.S. Department of Labor, which also provides job-seeker and

employee training for those who lost production jobs that are sent outside the country. The TAA services provide job search assistance, career planning and education. However, with the 2011-2013 state budget left unsettled between Gov. Mark Dayton and the Legislature, only the state’s essential services were expected to continue after July 1 until the two parties reach an agreement. On Wednesday, June 29, Ramsey County Judge Kathleen Gearin determined what those essential services would be. Assistance to former Tyco job seekers was not one of them, Eisenstadt said, so the worker’s assistance will be delayed until a budget is settled. Some Tyco layoffs occurred in February 2010, but the bulk of the layoffs are expected between March and December, according to a Department of Labor statement. Tyco first announced it would acquire ADC Telecommunications in July 2010, and the sale was completed in December 2010. The Eden Prairie location is expected to close, and the remaining employees will work in Shakopee, which will have limited manufacturing operations. A majority of Tyco's manufacturing operations in Shakopee will relocate to Mexico and New Mexico, Tyco Communications Manager Mike Ratcliff said earlier this year.

House District 41A Rep. Keith Downey (R-Edina) will appear on “Republican Roundtable” in July. Downey will discuss the state budget proposal that was passed by the legislature and would have raised spending by 6 percent, but was vetoed by Gov. Mark Dayton.

Republican Roundtable is produced by Senate District 63 Republicans and is hosted by Tim Erlander and Marc Sullivan. The show airs in Richfield, Edina, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Hopkins on cable channel 15 at 12:30 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30 p.m. Mondays. It airs in Bloomington on cable channel 16 at 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 5:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Uniform drive focuses on blue Cub Scout version BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS More than 5,000 children join Cub Scouts each year in the Northern Star Council, the division of the Boy Scouts that serves the Twin Cities and beyond. That means a lot of the familiar blueshirt uniforms are needed to clothe all those green scouts. But not every scout’s family can afford a uniform. Enter Brooklyn Park-based Pilgrim Cleaners and its fourth annual Scouting for Uniforms campaign. The campaign, which runs during the month of July, seeks to collect donated uniforms from the public for distribution to scouts in need. Throughout the month of July all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations will have bins to accept donations of used scouting uniforms. Pilgrim Cleaners will remove patches if necessary, clean the uniforms and pass them on to the Northern Star Council for distribution. Scouting uniforms of all sizes and from all eras are needed, but this year the special focus is on Cub Scout uniforms. Kent York of the Northern Star Council says this year’s drive is focusing on Cub Scout uniforms because Cub Scouts is the entry point into the scouting program, and the Northern Star Council doesn’t want

potential scouts not to join because they can’t afford a uniform. In addition, boys in the Cub Scout age group (first- through third-grade) tend to grow quickly and often need a different size uniform each year. That may be the reason why Cub Scout uniforms have run out most quickly during past distributions. Uniform donations are especially important during these tough economic times. York said that in 2009 an independent research group determined that about 5,000 youth in Boy Scouts in the Twin Cities received free and reduced lunch at school. That indicated a high level of need. Bonnie Engler is the President of Pilgrim Cleaners. “There is a need,” she said. “When we started exploring this, we realized there were a lot of kids who would like to join the Boy Scouts and weren’t.” Engler started the uniform drive four years ago after hearing about a similar program happening in another part of the country. The Scouting for Uniforms campaign has met with success. “It’s grown every year,” she said. The first year the drive collected 350 uniforms. The second year it collected 560 and last year it collected 564. This year the goal is to collect 750 uniforms.

“I think that’s a reachable goal,” Engler said. “We’re very fortunate here. We have a community that’s very willing and able to donate.” Engler said last year one Pilgrim Cleaners location had a man bring in a whole box of uniforms he had been saving. “I’m always overwhelmed to see how wonderfully and eagerly the community responds to these drives,” she said. Engler said people who don’t have used uniforms but still want to help can donate funds to the Northern Star Council to buy new uniforms. During July, uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave. 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. Governor, legislature get a big red “F” So let’s say you blow a fuse in your brain and you’re rushed to the hospital. When you get there, the doctor informs you he can’t operate today. He had a dispute with his wife over breakfast. When he arrived at the hospital, he had a dispute with chief of staff. There was no way to resolve the disputes so sorry, you have to die. That might be a bit overdramatizing what a state government shutdown is all about, but you get the idea. The Minnesota Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton refused to operate and we – all of us reading this who helped elect them and who pay their salaries – are the losers. If you have someone who refuses to do his or her job like the physician referenced above, the answer is simple. “You’re fired,” to quote Donald Trump. Unfortunately, we have to wait until the next election cycle

to “fire” any of our politicians. And voters have notoriously short memories. My best guess is this shutdown won’t even be a topic during the upcoming campaigns. Any elected official on either side of this issue who believes the people of Minnesota are going to buy either argument for failing to avoid a state shutdown may be wearing some hefty rosecolored glasses. Conservative, moderate or liberal, Minnesotans understand what it means to “do good work,” as Garrison Keillor is fond of saying. What happened July 1, 2011, does not represent “good work” on the part of any-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No demand for Birch Island Woods parking lot To the editor: As a long-term resident of Eden Prairie, I have a special interest in the proposal to insert a paved parking lot in the Birch Island woods. Having reviewed the plan, I find it questionable for several important reasons. First, I have not been able to identify any source that has established a need for this additional parking space. It appears that current parking space is sufficient, if one takes into account the adjoining parking at Eden Wood Center and road parking on Indian Chief and Birch Island roads. Until the need for more parking is clearly documented, there is

no reason to move forward with this project. Second, the area in question is a carefully preserved wooded area bought by Eden Prairie taxpayers; a small, precious oasis of woods and wetland scenery and quiet. The woods are easily reached by a city and regional bike trails. Inserting a paved parking lot into such a scene would clearly violate the intent and spirit of this wooded preserve. Finally, since there is no demonstrated need, the funding proposed for this parking project could clearly be better spent on other needs in Eden Prairie. I urge the city council to rethink this matter. For more information on the Birch Island woods parking lot project, visit jeffstrate.com. Doug Lind Eden Prairie

one. They didn’t “get-er-done,” as Larry the Cable Guy would say. Perhaps Minnesota’s politicians need to take a page from the old NASA handbook. “Failure is not an option.” You remember those days, no doubt, when all of us had differences of opinions but compromised to accomplish the goal. But when it meant saving the lives of three astronauts, no one at NASA was willing to give up and shut down operations in Houston. The best face that can be put on the entire injustice is that cooler heads will prevail over the long holiday weekend and an agreement can be reached Tuesday. This is being written Friday morning to accommodate short holiday print deadlines here at the newspaper. What happens once the lights are turned back on is up to us as taxpayers and voters. If “crisis

management” is your preferred form of governance, then you should fold your hands over your chest and laugh heartily at everyone who was harmed in the process. If your sense of fair-play and propriety has been breached, the ball is now in your court. You can yawn and walk away … politics as usual … or you can stand up and let your thoughts be known. Whatever side of the political aisle you are on, the sad fact remains that the legislature and the governor were given a job to do and they failed to do it. The patient died. Most of us were prepared to live with whatever was decided, but to simply not decide is unacceptable. As a taxpayer and their employer, clearly the governor and legislature have earned a “fails to meet minimum expectations” rating.

CORRECTION In the June 30 article, “Eden Prairie doctor saves life at gym, spreads heart health tips,” the name of the doctor who saved the man’s life is Dr. Hengbing Wang. He performed CPR until the AED arrived. Once someone’s

pulse returns after CPR, no AED shock is needed. In this case, Hengbing performed CPR for three minutes until the AED arrived, which was used to bring the man’s pulse back. The SunCurrent regrets the error.

The four ways to deal with mean-spirited people BY TROY DOBBS • GUEST COLUMNIST Over the years I have run into my fair share of mean-spirited, conflict-loving people, and I am sure you have too. You may sleep beside one at night or work for one during the day. Mean-spirited, conflictloving people are virtually everywhere. So how do we deal with mean-spirited people? The Bible says to resist your instinct for revenge. Romans 12:17 says, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil.” This means you suspend the law of the payback. You forego trying to scheme and devise ways to get even. When people are rude or mean, try to crawl into their skin and see things from their perspective. Ask yourself, “Why are they acting this way?” Then take the high road; treat them the way you would like to be treated. Present an offer of peace. If your desire is to please God, He will bless you by letting you get along with some of your enemies. Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” With this approach, one of two things will happen. If they accept your offer of peace, you have won your friend. Proverbs 16:7 says, “When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him.” If they reject your offer, living at peace with that person is impossible, but there is still hope. A third way to deal with mean-spirited people is to just get out of God’s way, because God is trying to do something. Romans 12:19 says, “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written, it is mine to avenge. I will repay.” Leaving room for

God’s wrath means if you intervene, and try to exercise revenge, you’re getting in God’s way. So be patient, get out of God’s way, and let God do his work. However, we should still desire God’s best for people. Proverbs 24:17-18 says, “Do not gloat when your enemy falls. When he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice. If you do, the Lord will see and he’ll disapprove and he’ll turn his wrath away from him.” The fourth way to deal with mean-spirited people is to kill your enemies with kindness. Romans 12:21 says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Do the unexpected. If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink. They don’t expect that. Romans 12:20 says, “It’s like putting burning coals on their head.” You may be thinking, “Exactly, I want them to suffer!” But this verse means something entirely different; your unexpected kindness lets them burn with remorse. The goal for your relationships with mean people is not to burn them, but to bless them. Thus when you demonstrate kindness to somebody who showed anger toward you, they burn with shame. They may not show it outwardly. They may not say, “Well, I’m just burning with shame by your kindness,” but it does affect them in a positive way. Booker T. Washington, a great American gentleman, once said, “I will not allow any man to make me lower myself by hating him. The only way I can destroy my enemy is to make him my friend.” Dobbs is senior pastor at Grace Church in Eden Prairie.

Bloomington man who claimed kidnapping faces misdemeanor BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS It took a SWAT team to arrest an Eden Prairie man suspected of kidnapping in April, but it’s the Bloomington man who made the claim that is facing criminal prosecution. The suspect, a 47-year-old Bloomington man, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime. Bloomington Police were dispatched to the defendant’s residence in the early morning hours of April 21, in response to a reported assault involving a gun, according to the criminal complaint. The defendant told police that he answered his door at approximately 2 a.m., thinking it was his neighbor. Instead the man at the door was his exboyfriend, with whom he had recently

ended a long-term relationship, and had an order for protection against, the complaint said. The defendant said his ex-boyfriend forced him to leave his Bloomington residence by vehicle, but he escaped in Minneapolis by biting his ex-boyfriend and running from the vehicle to a nearby gas station and calling 911. His alleged captor was a 47-year-old Eden Prairie man. Bloomington police contacted Eden Prairie police at approximately 3:40 a.m. Police went to the man’s Eden Prairie residence, but he refused to come out of his home. The Eden Prairie SWAT team formed a perimeter around the house and a negotiator was called to the scene. After a standoff, the KIDNAP: TO NEXT PAGE

Kidnap FROM PREVIOUS PAGE negotiator was able to talk the suspect out of his home without incident, and he was taken into custody about 9:45 a.m. The Eden Prairie man was transported to Bloomington and booked on suspicion of kidnapping and assault, but released later that day without being charged. He told police a very different story about the events that transpired prior to his arrest, according to

the complaint. The Eden Prairie man said that he had been at the defendant’s apartment building during the evening of April 21, looking for another friend. He instead encountered the defendant and his female neighbor, the complaint said. The trio went to a liquor store for liquor and cigarettes, returned to the apartment building and went to the woman’s apartment to drink and play cards. The defendant then asked the Eden Prairie man to drive him to Brooklyn Park, which he did, according to the complaint.

Upon returning to Bloomington the men stopped at a Walgreens. The Eden Prairie man went into the store alone. During that time a Bloomington police officer pulled into the parking lot. Upon returning to the car, the Eden Prairie man, who had been drinking, asked the defendant to drive, the complaint noted. The defendant drove the vehicle, but headed to Minneapolis rather than his Bloomington apartment. The Eden Prairie man told the defendant to stop the vehicle and get out at a gas station, which he did, the complaint said. An investigator determined through

surveillance video from the apartment building and the Walgreens that the Eden Prairie man’s story was true, according to the complaint. Further investigation determined that the woman was told by the defendant to lie about the three of them being together. An order for protection had never been served upon the Eden Prairie man, the complaint noted. If convicted the man faces up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $3,000.

Gardens FROM PAGE 1A we do want some of that, but we want some that are done by the homeowner and there’s a lot of character to it,” Myers said. A new stop this year will be the Brumback family garden, located in their backyard on Candlewood Parkway. “It’s nice to participate in a community event, especially for a good group like them,” Clare Brumback said. She and her husband John Brumback had made stops at previous garden tours, and last year a neighbor’s garden was one of them. The proverbial seed was planted, and the Brumback family signed up for the tour this year. They started the now show-worthy garden in 1998, approximately six years after they moved in, they said. “There was nothing here when we got here,” Clare Brumback said. Well, garden-wise there was nothing. The backyard actually had a lot of playground equipment. It also had a triangle shape to it, they said. John and Clare Brumback have created an at-home getaway, a porch and garden where they can relax at the end of the week. Their home will be one of six in the Eden Prairie Lioness Club’s 11th Annual Garden Tour, scheduled July 17. (Photo by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers)

But, that triangular boundary has been rounded off by the well-manicured garden space that lines and fills the property line. It offers a lot of shade, too. The garden features a lot of personal touches – heirlooms and hand-me-downs from friends and family, Clare Brumback said, from dog lilies from family living near the Mississippi River, to lilies from the north shore of Lake Superior and an upcoming request for hostas from a neighbor’s garden. They have plum and apple trees, and geraniums their children Jack and Julia named. The purple flowers were coined “Jack Mani Superb and red were tagged, “Madam Julia. “It’s a garden for fun. We’re not professional landscapers, Clare Brumback said. “It’s just a fun place for us to be with our family. Tickets to see the Brumback garden and the others on the tour are $10. They are available at Kowalski’s Market, 16500 W. 78th St., Eden Prairie. Tickets are also available at the homes featured on the tour. Some of the things on the website include stories and columns, pages of anxiety information, tips, an anxiety disorder quiz and there is even a “Fast Help” page to help people while they’re experiencing a panic attack. Like the disclaimer at the bottom of the website, Tibebu said the site does not offer medical advice, treatment or diagnose conditions. The site is for people and teens who are looking for a place to share their experiences, anonymously if they wish, and get support. Now 21 years old and a junior at St. Thomas with a entrepreneurship major, Tibebu is a little busy, running the nonprofit, overseeing college peers who work as interns, taking college courses and sometimes speaking at schools and different groups. developing a new software program, is training for the Twin Cities Marathon and works for Rocket 55 here and there as a freelancer. And, there’s this 5k-event coming up in July. That has taken some planning. She, with some help from interns, has been planning the inaugural “OutRun Anxiety Event,” a 5k run or walk in Eden Prairie to raise funds and awareness about teen anxiety. The event has been scheduled 9 a.m., Sunday, July 17, at Purgatory Creek Park, 13001 Technology Drive. “She has a really intense amount of empathy for someone her age,” Ayres said. After going through a painful time with her own anxiety, she took it upon herself to start a nonprofit, learn new skills and put in work to help others. “To me, I think shows a lot of maturity for someone her age,” Ayres said. Tibebu said her anxiety came on suddenly, while in middle school. “I can remember the day that the onset of the anxiety disorder was triggered,” she said. “I’m not sure of course what needed to happen to lead up to that. But I remember one stormy night, of course.” She was in seventh grade, and up to that point never had anxiety problems. During what became a stormy night, she decided to clean the entire house and then cook dinner for her parents. By 7 or 8 p.m., she had everything set up. The food was just about ready; the candles were lit, but her mom hadn’t come home, yet. When it hit 10 p.m., she asked her dad, “Hey, where’s mom?” Maybe it was the way her father responded, the face he made when he said, “’Solome, I don’t know,’” she said. She went upstairs to her room, feeling so warm she had to take her sweater off. Then, she got the chills and had to put it back on. That was the onset of her panic attack. Shortly after it began, she heard her mother walk in the door, asking if anyone was home, exclaiming how clean the house was and how bad she felt for dinner being ready and cold. That was the beginning of anxiety problems that she ultimately learned to cope with, manage and draw from while she diligently helps others. Such diligence has been recognized. She has received awards, and she’s been named a semifinalist in the student category of the Minnesota Cup, the largest business competition in the state. That recognition is for a different startup of hers, a website software program that she hopes will be useful in counseling offices and in private-practice therapy. Winning the grand prize in the student category, $10,000, would help go a long way toward meeting that goal.

EP 6-year-old records hole-in-one Pranay Singh also wins Pepsi Little People Golf Championship age group title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Recording a hole in one is a lifetime dream that most golfers never realize. However, Eden Prairie golfer Pranay Singh managed to achieve his ace while still young, very young. Singh, a 6-year-old, shot his first hole in one on the 90-yard seventh hole at Waters Edge Golf Course June 16 in Shakopee. Singh just completed kindergarten but has already earned impressive golf honors in a sport he is passionate about. Singh competed against 6- and 7-yearolds at the Pepsi Little People Championships June 21-22 in Quincy, Ill. Competition took place on a par-33 course. Singh finished first out of 30 competitors in the Boys 2B Division. He shot a 5under-par 61 with rounds of 30 and 31. Singh concluded the tournament in style, chipping in a birdie from 15 yards on the final hole. He won his division by four strokes. Last year, Singh placed 21st in the same tournament. Former competitors in the Pepsi Little People Championships include 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. “Pranay wants to golf every day,” said his father, Vivek Kumar. “I come home

He is eager for the challenge of competing in Division I. “I’m really excited to be able to play for the Gophers,” said Skjefte. “I have followed Gopher baseball closely growing up and attended many of their games. “I know I will have to keep improving my skills. But I am looking forward to the opportunity of being a Gopher.” Eden Prairie head baseball coach Mike Halloran knows what it takes to be successful in college baseball. After graduating from Edina High School, Halloran went on

I caddy for him in most tournaments, but it is a big challenge for me to give him the proper club

to become the Gophers’ starting catcher and earned All-Big Ten Conference honors. “Second base is probably Tony’s best college position,” said Halloran. “But we needed him to play short this past season and he did a great job. “Tony didn’t get many good pitches to hit this season because of his past batting efforts. But he was still one of our best hitters and one of the best all-around players in the state during the last three seasons. “Tony stepped right in as a sophomore starter and batted third for us. He played great since and is a game changer,” added the Eagle coach.

All-star experience Halloran had one last opportunity to coach Skjefte. He was one of the Metro West coaches in the Minnesota Lions AllStar Baseball Tournament June 24-25 at Chanhassen High School.

because his shot distances are changing every month.” Singh, who will be a first-grader at Eden Lake Elementary this fall, enjoys golf but has one phase of the game he likes more than others. “Putting is OK but driving the ball is what I enjoy most, ” he said. Singh is already beating his father and brother Parichay, a 13-year-old. He is encouraging his mother, Richa Singh, to play golf and is eager to offer golf tips, according to his father. Pranay has a busy golf schedule planned this summer. He will play in the San Diego Junior Masters tournament July 7-8 and the Junior World Championships in the 6-and-under age group July 12-14 in San Diego. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson played in the Junior World Championships growing up. Singh finished 21st in his age group a year ago in that tournament. Singh plans to also participate in the U.S. Kids World Championships Aug. 4-6 in Pinehurst, N.C. Singh plays regularly at Waters Edge, a par-30 executive course located at Stonebrooke Golf Club. “Pranay has been playing golf since he started walking, “ said his father. “He would hit plastic balls in the basement all day. “By age 2, he was making good contact with the ball and I started taking him to the driving range when he was 3.” His passions outside golf include chess, basketball and, of course, video games.

The Metro West squad won the title with a 5-4 victory over Metro East in the championship game. Metro West defeated North 3-2 and lost 5-2 to South in the other two tourney games. Skjefte was joined by former Eagle teammates Lance Thonvold, Adam Bray and Tyler Ruemmele in the all-star series. “Playing in the all-star tournament was one of my best high school experiences,” said Skjefte. “I had a chance to meet and play against the best high school players from around the state. “I played in all three tournament games. I was used in the outfield one game before playing the final two games at second. I hit the ball all over the field but those balls couldn’t seem to find a hole.” Skjefte has been pummeling the ball as a member of the Eden Prairie American Legion baseball team this summer. EP grad Schmit earns college baseball honors Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie has earned individual recognition as a member of the Des Moines Area Community College baseball team. Schmit, a freshman shortstop, was named National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Defensive Player of the Year. He had a .976 fielding percentage and just four errors in 2011. Schmit, an Eden Prairie High School graduate, finished the season with 106 assists and 55 putouts and participated in 23 double plays. At the plate, Schmit batted .347 with 51 hits, including 12 doubles, one triple and one home run. He drove in 25 runs and stole seven bases. Schmit was also one of the NJCAA Division II Rawlings Gold Glove winners. Schmit was an all-conference and All-State shortstop at Eden Prairie during his high school career. Legion Tournament over the July 4 weekend. Skjefte had three hits and four RBI during Eden Prairie’s 15-4 first-round victory over Coon Rapids June 29. He added two hits in a 15-8 loss to Boulder (Colo.) later that day. The Eden Prairie slugger had three more hits and two RBI during a 13-5 thirdround victory over Colchester (Vt.) June 30. (Final tournament results and highlights were not available as this issue went to press.) Skjefte has also displayed his strength on the wrestling mat. He wrestled at 145 pounds for the Eagles during a senior season that was cut short by a shoulder injury. But he was a sixth-place state finisher twice in his four-year wrestling career. Skjefte doesn’t plan to give wrestling a shot in college. He will be busy trying to land a starting position on the Gopher baseball team.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
