EDINA Where Community Meets Excellence
Welcome to Edina! Life in Edina has been rated as excellent or good by 98 percent of our residents – a Twin Cities leading percentage for quality of life. Whether you are moving to Edina, have lived here for some time or are just visiting, we hope you reach a similar conclusion about the quality of life in our town. In Edina, newly arriving residents tell me they feel immediately welcomed by neighbors, both through traditional personal contact as well as through NextDoor, our electronic online message board system that is actively used in most of our neighborhoods. Our city offers rich life experiences in so many ways and through so many organizations where the level of commitment to the community is reflected in the significant amount of philanthropic giving of time and energy by hundreds of volunteers. Edina is all about kids and getting them the best start in life. Our excellent public school system, the only one in the state ranked in the top 100 nationally, is preparing students for bright futures, giving them
the confidence and skills to be able to work in the future at jobs that both exist now and have not yet been created. Our beautiful neighborhoods create a wonderful sense of place, our expansive and up-to-date park and recreational facilities and programs suit any interest and skill level, and our premier retail shopping and dining provide wonderful experiences for residents and visitors alike. Our hospitality organization, Explore Edina (exploreedina.com), is helping assure that residents and visitors alike are getting the most out of their experiences in our town. Commercial activity continues to flourish. We have become a city of medical excellence in our Southdale District and beyond, and a very strong level of investment continues in our single-family and multifamily neighborhoods as well. Whether you live in, work in or are just visiting Edina, I believe the Edina Community Guide will help enhance your experiences in our community. So come and visit, or come and stay. All of us in Edina welcome you with open arms to our very special place. Jim Hovland
Inside this guide Edina is well known for many things – its school system, shopping, health care options and overall quality of life. For more than 47,000 people, Edina is home and a resource. From its roots as a 19th century Irish and Scottish immigrant settlement, Edina has grown to be one of the most economically stable cities in the state. Its tax base trails only Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington, and ground continues to be broken on new developments. Edina continues to strengthen its Minnesota roots. The school system is setting plans for Next Generation learning, the business community and city leaders are actively attracting visitors through the Explore Edina bureau, and investments in city services continue to grow. Inside this guide to Edina, you will read about some of these initiatives and discover what makes the city successful. We will offer information about Edina’s award-winning schools, churches, shopping districts and nationally-acclaimed hospital. We will profile the police and fire departments, highlight the libraries, The Edina Historical Society and more. We hope this guide helps you learn more about what Edina has to offer.

EDINA Where Community Meets Excellence
Live, learn and work in Edina Edina’s vibrant community requires an active city that can provide an array of amenities and services to its residents. Edina’s award-winning schools, safe neighborhoods, top-notch parks, variety of shops, exceptional businesses and other regional attractions have drawn approximately 47,000 residents to the city, all making the first-ring suburb one of the premier cities in the state. With development on the rise, Edina now has the fourth largest tax base in the state, with over $11 billion, eclipsed only by Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington. About 95 percent of the 16-squaremile city is developed, largely as residential areas. Residents have come to expect a high level of public service from the city’s full-time Fire Department, nationally-recognized Police Department, and the Public Works Department, which maintains 230 miles of roadway. Though one of the Twin Cities’ oldest and most fully-developed communities, the city of Edina boasts more than 1,550 acres of open space and eight miles of scenic pathways for bicycling, walking and cross-country skiing. Amenities at the city’s parks include baseball, softball, football and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, outdoor
skating rinks, playground equipment and picnic shelters. The Park and Recreation Department also operates 10 special facilities providing year-round fun for residents of all ages: the Edina Aquatic Center, Art Center, Braemar Ice Arena, Braemar Golf Courses, Centennial Lakes Park, Edinborough Park, Arneson Acres Park and the Edina Senior Center. Incorporated in 1888 as a milling area on the banks of Minnehaha Creek, Edina is now home to a vibrant business community. Major employers include Jerry’s Enterprises, Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina Public Schools, Regis Salons, International Dairy Queen, BI Worldwide and Edina Realty. EDINA Where Community Meets Excellence
Edina offers award-winning schools Edina continues to be recognized nationally for the education it offers students, and the district continually pursues best practices as it looks toward the future. This is evident through its Next Generation planning, which focuses on a well-rounded approach to educating students while enriching their lives. The Next Generation planning also includes revamping learning spaces, with almost every school in the district being remodeled through a $125 million referendum, including an expansion and transition of the 9th grade class to the high school. Edina Public Schools was named one of the 2015 “Best High Schools” in America, ranked first in the state and 71st nationally by Newsweek. It was also named a Gold Medalist for high performance for state assessments and college readiness by U.S. News & World Report. The district’s six elementary schools, two middle schools and high school offer a variety of learning choices for students of all abilities. The six elementary schools – Concord, Cornelia, Countryside, Creek Valley, Highlands and Normandale – also include neighborhood schools, a French immersion program and multi-age Continuous Progress learning programs. Middle school students at South View and Valley 6 | Edina Community Guide 2017
View may also choose enriched or accelerated course selections. Unique options include Project Lead the Way, which offers hands-on pre-engineering courses for middle and high school students. For motivated middle-schoolers, there is also the AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination) program that prepares students in the academic middle for college-prep classes in high school. At Edina High School, students can choose from a host of electives and Advanced Placement courses. About two-thirds of Edina High School students enroll in AP courses each year. They also stay involved outside of class, with 1,100 high school students participating in clubs throughout the year. The district also has top-notch athletics. More than 1,300 students participate on at least one team. Sports Illustrated Magazine ranked Edina’s athletic program the eighth “Best High School Athletic Program in the Nation” in 2005. Edina students have won 143 state championships, more than any of the other 500 members of the Minnesota State High School League. A range of activities at Centennial Lakes With 24 acres of ponds, green space, walking paths, manicured putting greens, croquet and lawn bowling course and an amphitheater, Edina’s Centennial Lakes Park is a gem. These facilities host a range of activities: A farmer’s market, fishing, paddle boating, music, storytelling and dance lessons are some of the opportunities. Centennial Lakes Park also made a splash as being one of the premier Pokemon Go app locations in the metro area. In its eighth year, the farmers’ market will be open 3-7 p.m. Thursdays, June 15 to Sept. 28. Dozens of vendors will sell a variety of items: fruits and vegetables, honey, chocolates, fresh flowers and more. Centennial Lakes is home to several special events and is a regular spot for many. The Edina Model Yacht Club hosts radio-controlled boat races, and the bent grass putting course attracts regular visitors. The park’s 18 putting greens range from 57 to 125 feet in length and provide more than a traditional mini-golf experience. The manicured greens are surrounded by obstacles, such as ponds, planter beds and sand traps. The course is par 51 and takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes to complete. Centennial Lakes also has championship-caliber bent grass croquet and lawn bowling courts. They
can be rented by the hour, with all equipment and written instructions included in the court fee. Music is prevalent throughout the summer months. From June through August, free concerts are planned on a regular basis. Noontime children’s concerts and performances are every Tuesday and Thursday. Movies in the Park play Thursday evenings at sunset. Other musical and cultural performances in the 1,000-seat lakeside Maetzold Amphitheater can be found on the Centennial Lakes Park website. There are activities in the fall and winter as well, including the 2017 Fall into the Arts Festival, held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9-10. In the winter months, the park’s pond turns into one of the Twin Cities’ finest outdoor skating venues. Inside the Hughes Pavilion, guests can relax by one of three fireplaces while sipping a cup of hot chocolate from the concessions stand. Figure and hockey skates for children and adults are available for rent. Hours vary by season. Info: CentennialLakesPark.com Centennial Lakes Park 7499 France Ave. S., Edina 952-833-9580

EDINA Where Community Meets Excellence
Chamber connects businesses to city The Edina Chamber of Commerce is a vital resource for not only its 400 members, but to community members who want to grow personally and professionally. The Chamber is actively involved with many initiatives for both its members and the city at large, shown through its work on a new Edina visitor’s bureau and Life Reimagined services tailored to Edina residents who are facing a change in their life’s direction. It has embraced its nonprofit values since it formed in 1971. The new Explore Edina visitor’s bureau showcases the city’s range of shopping, activities and events and helps coordinate trips for out-of-town visitors. These new endeavors supplement traditional chamber attractions. The Taste of Edina, one of the Chamber’s most popular events of the year, takes place at the Westin Edina Galleria. The annual evening of food and wine tasting gives restaurant members the opportunity to showcase their businesses to the Edina community. This year’s Taste event is Thursday, May 11. The Chamber’s Annual Meeting in May includes the naming of the Teacher of the Year and recognition for others in the community, including the
Business Person of the Year. The 2017 Annual Meeting is Wednesday, May 24. Other annual events include the Chamber’s golf tournament Monday, Aug. 7, at Braemar Golf Course. The Great Gatsby, the largest annual social function for the Chamber, is held in February. The Chamber also has regular gatherings throughout the year. The general membership meeting is held monthly and features informational and inspirational speakers. The At Your Business Break meetings bring members to a local business for an open house and coffee break. The group W.I.S.E. (Women Inspiring Success in Edina) is a monthly meeting for women professionals to network within the Edina business community. Edina Emerging Leaders for young professionals under 40 is one of the Chamber’s strongest networking groups. For more informal networking, After Hours Social is held three times each year. A golfer’s paradise awaits in Edina Edina is home to private golf courses, but Braemar Golf Course provides all residents a chance to practice and play, be it championship-level golfers or those new to the game. Braemar facilities even have golfers covered during the winter and poor weather with the Braemar Golf Dome. As with many of the storied institutions in Edina, Braemar Golf Course is also experiencing an upgrade. Construction began in late 2016 for a new regulation 18-hole course on the site of the existing 27-hole Braemar Golf Course. The old course will be transformed into a 6,941-yard golf course that not only will serve Edina golfers, but also its residents. The new layout frees up almost 10 acres for more than a mile of walking trails, five miles of ski trails, bocce ball, and recreational opportunities, including disc golf, fling golf, picnics, sledding and more. Located on 500 acres of rolling hills and scenic lakes surrounded by oak tree-lined ridges, Braemar maintains a pristine, secluded setting mere minutes from the city center. The city focuses on ensuring golfers have a place to play without putting too much burden on taxpayers. Golfers at the private Edina Country Club can play 18 holes on a course that was updated by Minnesota native Tom Lehman, a former No. 1-ranked player who regularly competes on the PGA and Champions
tours, and his design partner Chris Brands. The return to a more classic design includes doubling the number of bunkers, as well as adding more variety and challenge to the par-72 course. The 18-hole private course at Interlachen Country Club in Edina is also considered one of the finest in Minnesota and the nation. The par-73 course includes 14 bodies of water and is lined by more than 2,500 trees. Interlachen has also hosted a number of national golfing events. Info: BraemarGolf.com. Edina Art Fair: A half-century tradition The Edina Art Fair, the second largest in the state, kicks off the Minnesota art fair season as the year’s first official art fair. The 51st annual Edina Art Fair begins Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 4, at 50th Street and France Avenue. This year’s event will feature approximately 300 fine artists and crafters from around the state, the U.S. and Canada. Works on display and for sale will include paintings, watercolors, photography, engravings, wood carvings, jewelry, glasswork and more. In recent years, a total of 150,000 visitors were expected to attend. Not only has the fair received local and statewide notoriety, but it has received national accolades. It has been ranked the 48th best art fair in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine and ranked 69th in the top 100 fine art fairs for 2011 by the Art Fair Source Book. The 2017 Edina Art Fair Featured Artist is Julie Dwyre-Zuckerman. She paints bold contemporary
abstract landscapes in oil and acrylic. Beyond artistry, the art fair includes musical and on-stage entertainment for adults and children. Some of the entertainment for grown-ups includes fashion shows, cooking demonstrations, floral arranging and spa techniques. Children have a slate of entertainment options as well, from Children’s Art Projects to the Kids Art Zone, which has music and interactive entertainment throughout the fair’s open hours. A free shuttle will run from Southdale Center to the Edina Art Fair, making a continuous loop beginning one hour before it opens and running one hour after the Art Fair closes. A bike corral will be located in the US Bank parking lot off of West 50th Street. Edina Art Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 5-6, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 7. For children from birth to age 5, and their parents, the center provides parenting classes, preschool classes with licensed teachers, a school readiness program and child care. As children reach school age, community education provides an opportunity for all-day kindergarten. The K Plus program, offered at all six elementary schools, provides a full-day experience in the classroom with the regular kindergarten teacher for continuity. For grades K-9, there are three programs that help keep students engaged before and after school, on non-school days and during summer break. Those programs are Edina KIDS Club, WISE Guys and SURGE, and each serves a separate set of grades. KIDS Club provides a safe environment for K-3 students to engage beyond the classroom. KIDS Club also has summer programs.
WISE Guys is suited for grades 4 and 5, and beyond its programming, offers lounge areas, game rooms and the Homework Zone. SURGE is intended for grades 6-9, with food, music, foosball, table tennis, computers and more. In Youth Development, programs for children in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 offer a variety of options – from digital comic book design and guitar, to ballet and tennis camp – before and after school and during the summer. The Learning Exchange, a program coordinated with surrounding cities, includes a wide variety of customized classes for adults with disabilities. To serve teachers, the Curricular Resources and Programs area provides curriculum enrichment opportunities. The Business/Education Partnership promotes the exchange of resources between business and education for mutual benefit. And, the Edina Resource Center connects people to community services and resources. The community utilizes the various resources available to them, and more than 100 community members volunteer their time to support the system. Volunteers also serve on various Edina Community Education Services advisory councils to ensure programs run smoothly and reflect and serve the entire community. Edina Historical Society traces roots The Edina Historical Society works hard to ensure that the city’s roots, going back to 1888, are retained while offering interesting programs to keep residents engaged. Along that line, property and genealogy are two reoccurring inquiries from residents. The center relies on dedicated volunteers. Residents are inquisitive about what their neighborhood used to look like and how their street earned its name. Residents who want to see their home as its former self are in luck. The museum holds assessor records for the city of Edina, including a photo of each house taken in 1959, as well as information on building updates and sales over the years. Homes built after 1959 typically have a photo on file from the year they were built. Copies of the photos are available for purchase. In 2016, the Edina Historical Society Museum premiered a new exhibit that celebrated the 60th anniversary of Southdale Center by exploring the mall’s storied history, including artifacts and original blueprints. The museum also stores maps and aerial photos to give residents a snapshot of development over the years. A set of 1937 aerial photos predate much of the city’s suburban development, showing mostly farmland where houses now stand. The museum also stocks old phone directories, which can be a good resource for house historians. Some neighborhoods have more information 20 | Edina Community Guide 2017
available than others. The historic Country Club District had its own monthly newspaper, The Crier, for about a decade in the 1930s. The paper, which featured homes of the month and society information, is archived at the museum. The Edina Historical Society also operates the Edina Historical Center at Frank Tupa Park, home to the Minnehaha Grange Hall and Cahill School. The oneroom schoolhouse, built in 1864, is the oldest standing building in Edina. The Grange was built in 1879 as a meeting place for area farmers. The building also served as Edina Village Hall from its incorporation in 1888 to 1942, with many important events taking place inside, including the decision to name Edina. Grange Hall was moved in 1970 to Frank Tupa Park, where it is used in conjunction with Cahill School for historical-themed field trips, birthday parties and special events. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays and by appointment. Liquor operations boost city revenues The individual contributions made by Edina’s municipal liquor stores add up to something much larger. The city of Edina operates three liquor stores that in 2014 provided $1 million to those funds that support city activities and facilities. Specifically, the revenue has benefited the Edina Art Center, Braemer Ice Arena, Edinborough Park and neighborhood parks. The revenue has helped offset taxes, saving residents as much as 4 percent on their property taxes. Under new direction by Liquor Manager Josh Furbish, the city is pursing a delivery model, as well as specials and other local events to give standout customer service. Those stores feature a wide product selection, offering more than 2,000 varieties of wine, 350 brands of beer and 500 brands of liquor. Craft beer lovers and wine experts will find the latest releases and vintage bottles. High levels of customer service provided by helpful, knowledgeable staff members, wine tastings and other benefits make picking the best beer, wine or spirit easier. Edina Liquor Store staff are on-hand to assist in party planning, holiday purchases or creative con-
coctions for a weekend dinner. The liquor stores also partner with local organizations for events throughout the year. Similar to other city departments, Edina Liquor has a blog that contains many entertaining and meal ideas. Frequent blog posts include food-beverage pairings, recipes and beverage descriptions to provide help to people as well. Liquor store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Liquor stores will be open Sunday once Sunday liquor laws go into effect in July. The Southdale Store hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Safety departments are here to protect Edina residents look to their public leaders for a safe community. Police Chief Dave Nelson oversees a department of 73 people, two K-9 units and one animal control officer. Among them are 46 police officers, including the 34 men and women in the patrol division. The patrol division protects Edina’s 16 square miles 24 hours a day. Each year the officers respond to thousands of calls for service ranging from suspicious noises to death investigations. The 25,000-square-foot police station at Edina City Hall also features a state-of-the-art 911 communications center. The city’s nine full-time and two parttime dispatchers and their supervisor work around the clock at the Edina Communications Center to help keep residents safe. They also provide dispatch services for the cities of Golden Valley and Richfield. In Edina, firefighters do more than put out flames. Fire Chief Tom Schmitz oversees a fire department of 31 career firefighter/paramedics and 11 paid oncall firefighters. The Edina Fire Department boasts one of the fastest response times for medical calls in the metro area – four minutes and 19 seconds from call to door. In 2013, firefighters responded to more than 4,600 calls for service, about 80 percent of which were for emergency medical services. The fire department also includes a special operations team trained in technical and structural collapse
rescues. The team is a regional asset for other departments in the area. Each year, Edina crews respond to up to 40 mutual aid calls. When possible, Edina firefighters prefer to stop fires before they start. Fire Marshal Jeff Siems leads the department’s fire prevention division, which includes two inspectors, a public educator and fire prevention clerk. Every year, this division of the fire department conducts nearly 70 safety presentations, reaching about 2,500 children in Edina preschools, child care centers and elementary classrooms. In addition, the department enforces the state fire code by regularly inspecting the city’s commercial buildings and multi-family housing units, checking for working fire alarms, sprinkler systems and more. Individual home inspections for fire safety are completed by request.
