Music and Art Festival comes to Fridley ‘49er Days BY ELIZABETH SIAS SUN FOCUS NEWSPAPERS

B

ack for the 40th year, the annual Fridley ‘49er Days has something for everyone. This year’s event takes place June 26-29 at the Medtronic

Rice Creek Campus, at 7000 Central Ave. NE. New this year is the Music and Art Festival from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, June 28. Organizer Margo Numedahl, program supervisor with the Fridley Parks and Recreation Department, said the festival will feature a

variety of performances. The Minnesota Sinfonia approached the city about performing at ‘49er Days, so organizers decided to turn it into a new event. “We thought it would be really good timing to fit in with ‘49er Day events,” Numedahl said. “We don’t have a lot of orchestra performances in Fridley.” Along with the orchestra, the Music and Art Festival will include performances by ’nMotion Dance Center, Fridley Community Theatre and Sounds of Blackness. The Minnesota Sinfonia will play a piece titled “The Nightingale,” Numedahl said. Kids from Fridley schools — mostly Hayes and Stevenson elementary schools — have been creating sets, props and costumes to prepare. Some of the students will act and narrate. “It’s a really good opportunity for families to be able to see this orchestra performance,” she said. The festival coincides with games and rides at the carnival, as well as Kids Day activities that run from 1-4 p.m., including a juggler and magician. Touch-A-Truck is also back, allowing kids to interact with a fire truck, train and other police vehicles. Home Depot will bring supplies for children to build a new toy. “I’m looking forward to this new event to see how everything comes together,” Nume-

(File photo by Elizabeth Sias) dahl said. “I’m really looking forward to ‘The Nightingale’ performance. I know the kids have been really excited about it, so I’m excited to see how it all comes together.” Sue Johnson with the Parks and Recreation Department has been involved in organizing the annual event for the last 28 years, she said. With ‘49er Days president Tom Bourque out of commission this year, Johnson has taken on the role of acting president. Kicking off the festival is the ‘49er Days Parade at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, rain or shine. Many of the Fridley ‘49er Days events new in 2013 are

making a comeback this year. “It all went off really well so we’re repeating a lot of it,” Johnson said. The second annual Fridley High School all-school reunion will be 6-11 p.m. June 28. Complete with more than a dozen rides, games and plenty of food, the carnival is returning; 5-11 p.m. June 27, noon to 11 p.m. June 28 and noon to 5 p.m. June 29. The car show is also coming back 1-5 p.m. Sunday, June 29. Johnson said this will also be the second year running the Fridley Idol Contest, which is 1-5 p.m. Sunday, June 29.

The pie-baking contest will also be back, featuring a $1,000 grand prize from Financial One Credit Union. There are three categories — fruit, cream and creative — with a maximum of 15 entries per category. Each category winner receives $100. Contestants can register ci.fridley.mn.us/49er-days/49er-daysmain. The street dance 7-11 p.m. Friday night will feature The Whitesidewalls, an old favorite. “They were good and there’s a lot of people in town excited to see them back, Johnson said. Saturday’s street dance will feature Fridley High School alum Chris Brooks. Overall, Johnson is looking forward to the entire Fridley ‘49er Days festival. “I think the Fridley Music and Art Festival is going to be a good attraction this year, she said. “Saturday is going to be a busy, very hopping day. Contact Elizabeth Sias at elizabeth. sias@ecm-inc.com

Pete and Linda Borman are parade grand marshals Bormans organized the parade for 16 years BY ELIZABETH SIAS SUN FOCUS NEWSPAPERS

T

he ever-popular Fridley ‘49er Days Parade kicks off the weekend of festivities this year. Sponsored and organized by the Fridley Lions Club, the parade will be held Thursday, June 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. rain or shine. It will begin at Fridley High School at 6000 W. Moore Lake Drive, head west on 61st Avenue, then north on 7th Street, east on Mississippi Street, south on Able Street, and back to the high school. The review stand is typically set up on Mississippi Street near Hayes Elementary School. The parade planning committee chose past parade organizers Pete and Linda Borman as this year’s grand marshals. The Bormans co-chaired the parade committee for 16 years before handing

much their retirement year, Kostick said. “We figured there was no one better for all the work they’ve done over the years to be the grand marshals.

Pete Borman said he was pleasantly surprised when he found out he and Linda had been chosen. “It’s kind of an honor being the grand marshal, he said. He said he joined the Lions 20 years ago, and his neighbor at the time was the parade chairman. Borman helped for a couple years before his neighbor handed the parade planning off to him. “Sixteen years later, my wife Linda and I have been co-chairs basically running the parade, he said. Why did he keep coming back to plan the parade year after year? “Punishment, Borman joked, laughing. The Fridley Lions Club has been sponsoring and organizing the parade since it started 40 years ago, Borman said. It was an annual project he enjoyed. “It was hectic for the week ahead of time getting everything all lined up, but once the parade started, it was done. Nobody knew if the lineup was out of order or anything, he said.

Planning it got easier every year, but after nearly two decades, he and Linda decided it was time to move on. This year, he’s taken on more of a consulting role. “Linda and I had it pretty organized on Excel spreadsheets, Borman said. “Jim (Kostick) has taken it one step further. I’m very pleased with how he’s taken it over. He seems even more organized. Jim is very detail-oriented. Borman has been in the parade only once before — back around 2000-2001 when he was president of the Fridley Lions Club. This year, he and Linda will ride in a 1970s Chevrolet Caprice convertible — the same one that’s been used for the grand marshal every year. Borman said he’s looking forward to being able to relax at the parade this year. “I’m looking forward to just showing up, he said. “I can’t remember the last time that I actually went around the whole route of the parade and watched the whole parade. This year there are about 100 units

Longtime Lions Club supporter is this year’s Jamboree grand marshal BY KASSIE PETERMANN SUN FOCUS NEWSPAPERS

T

he 2014 Jamboree Parade Grand Marshal is Wanda Bierch. Bierch and her husband, Dick, owned the neighborhood bar Dick’s Place at 40th Avenue and 7th Street in Columbia Heights for about 27 years, until 1995. “The bar over the years became the hub of Columbia Heights, said Roger Gillespie, a Lions Club member. Gillespie nominated Bierch to serve as this year’s grand marshal. “She’s helped our Lions Club tremendously over the years, Gillespie said of Bierch. Dick’s Place sponsored several teams over the years, including men’s and women’s softball, baseball, basketball, broomball and bowling teams.

Jamboree features two new events

Grand marshal Continued from page 9 ed Halloween parties, New Year’s Eve parties and potlucks throughout the years. For approximately 20 years, Bierch helped run the Jamboree parade by handling all of the correspondence. She and Dick, a Lions Club member, worked on many projects, such as the Sweetheart Dance, pancake breakfasts and raffles. Bierch also helped make the float for the parade each year. “It was a lot of fun, she recalled. Because Bierch worked, she never saw the Jamboree parade in person and always watched it later on cable. “It will be fun to actually be in a parade and see it. ... It’s fun to give back to Heights because we had really nice customers and a lot of fun in Heights, she said. She’s looking forward to being in the parade and seeing everyone again from Columbia Heights, Bierch said, adding that her four children and four grandchildren will be watching this year’s parade. Bierch speaks highly of the Lions Club, which she said does a lot of good work in the community.

Tasty Pizza Medallion Hunt a hit with families BY KASSIE PETERMANN SUN FOCUS NEWSPAPERS

T

asty Pizza has a long history of hosting the medallion hunt during the Jamboree festival. Owner Todd Estrem said Tasty Pizza began sponsoring the hunt in the 1970s. In the late 1980s, the Columbia Heights Lions Club took over the hunt, and after a few years, Tasty Pizza began sponsoring it again. Starting Wednesday, June 25, clues will be posted twice daily at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Tasty Pizza, 875 45th Ave. NE. Clues will be posted on Tasty Pizza’s Facebook page one half hour after they’re posted at the restaurant. Estrem said the medallion hunt draws a mix of people, including lots of families and some individuals. There are people who search for the medallion each year. He recalled that the medallion was stuck to the drain in a water fountain at Huset Park about three years ago, which

was funny because people had been looking at it all the time, but didn’t know it was there. The prize started at $500, and for about the last 10 years, the prize has been $1,000. “It’s fun to see the families out there enjoying themselves,â€? Estrem said, adding, “A lot of families enjoy it because it gives them a chance to get together, and some people even come into town for it and work together as a group.â€? The rules for the medallion hunt include: • No Tasty Pizza employees or their family members can play. • No clues or information will be given out over the phone. • No digging or climbing. • Search public land only and adhere to posted rules and hours. • Bring the medallion to Tasty Pizza immediately after finding it for verification.
