Allen Derheim named 2016 Osseo Lions Roar Grand Marshal For the 2016 Osseo Lions Roar, the Osseo Lions Club has announced it has chosen Allen Derheim of Osseo to be the Grand Marshal this year. Some of the residents may know Derheim as “that guy that’s always riding his bike around town even in the dead of winter,� others may know him from going to just about any of the sporting events in Osseo, or the guy that plays piano at the United Methodist Church, or the great lover of the music programs at St. Vincent. Derheim grew up in Brooklyn Park with a

foster family and went to church and was confirmed in 1966 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He graduated from Osseo Senior High in 1970. He was proud to let the Osseo Lions know that his was the first graduating class to have their graduation ceremony on the football field, with the family all cheering for the graduates from the stands. He moved to Osseo some time in the late 60’s. He has lived here most of that time. He has never had his driver’s license, so just rides his bike everywhere. When riding across Central Avenue in

2006, he was struck by a car, and seriously injured. He now resides at the Osseo Gardens Assisted Living. Derheim has had his beloved bicycle stolen a couple of times. One time, the Osseo Lions remember hearing that the Osseo Police Department chipped in and got him a new bike when his was stolen. During the 2014-15 school year, Derheim was awarded the “Super Fan Award� by the Osseo Sports Department. The different teams gave him sports memorabilia and passes to all the games. They also invited

him to their banquets. He couldn’t be prouder. Derheim can be found at most of the home football and basketball games. He is a huge baseball fan. When the Osseo Lions were trying to find him to let him know he was chosen as the Grand Marshal, they heard a town league baseball game going on and knew just where to find him. The Osseo Lions Club thanks Derheim for being himself and for agreeing to be the Grand Marshal this year. Keep pedaling. Allen Derheim is this years Osseo Lions Roar Grand Marshal.

Message from Lions President Beckie Nesseth Just a little history about how the Lion’s Roar began and then grew to what it is today. In 1975, the city of Osseo turned 100 years old. And, considering the importance of a 100th anniversary, the mayor, the city council, and other citizens in the town decided it was important to have a big celebration to mark the occasion. They asked the Osseo Lions Club to give a hand in helping with the celebration. Since giving a helping hand to local communities is what the Lions are all about and do best, this was a perfect fit for the organization.

So, it was agreed. And, the event was a success. In fact, the weekend parade and festivities turned out so well, it was decided that the event would continue on as an annual tradition, and the Osseo Lions would take on the planning and organization starting the next year. And, so it began. This year is the 40th anniversary of the Osseo Lions Roar. And, with the help of the Osseo Lions Club, local sponsors, volunteers, community donations and the city of Osseo, the Roar seems to get bigger and better every year. And, every year the club tries to add new

things for everyone to see and do. One example of this was the Kids Corral with the petting zoo and the bounce houses, which were a huge success last year. “We also kept some of the old favorites like the bean bag tournament, Medallion hunt, and of course, the popular parade through town and down main street,� Lion President Beckie Nesseth said. “And, we can’t forget about the food and entertainment. Roast beef sandwiches, brats and the beer wagon is just the beginning.�

Osseo Lions also provides a way of becoming part of the community through many community events — Osseo Lions Roar Days, Annual Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast, Osseo Pie Baking Contest, Osseo Car Show Concessions, Christmas Decorations in Osseo, Lunch with Santa, Osseo Halloween Festival and many more. Tina Danelius named 2016 Lion of the Year The 2016 Lion of Year has been named. Osseo Lions Past President Sandy Danks said Tina Danelius was chosen for the Lion of the Year title from a group of Lions. “Her bubbly personality, her willingness to do anything asked of her, her organization and creativity have been a great addition to our club,� Danks said. “She has lots of ideas of ways to ‘serve’ our community and to help bring people in the town together.� She initiated the idea of the Pie Baking Contest that was a huge success, she and her partner in crime — Joan Columbus —have done a great job

Danelius was born in Aurora, to parents that later on in life became active members of the Coon Rapids Lions. She has two siblings that she is very close with and both live in the suburbs. “I’ve been married for 35 years (in October) to my best friend and lifelong husband Mike,� Danelius said. “We’ve lived in Osseo for the past 32 years and have been blessed with great neighbors. We have a daughter Sarah, who has just graduated from Drake University with a BS degree in Biology. Sarah will continue her education next fall in hopes to go into some type of medical career.� Danelius said her pas-

sion in life has always been to help people. “I enjoy hearing stories about people and their families and life’s journey,� she said. “My hobbies include gardening, fishing, photography and spending time with my family.� She and her husband were asked to join the Lions club and never realized how fun it would be helping the community and getting involved. Danelius has been a member for the past two years and she has had so much fun with the members of the club. “Some of the things that I played a big part in were decorating the hotel room for the 5M5 Winter Convention in 2015, cochairing the Kids Corral at the Lion’s Roar, coming up with something spec-

tacular for Mystery Night and I can’t forget the Osseo Pie Bake (co-chair with my husband Mike),� she said. She has also helped with other events such as the Steak Fry, Pancake Breakfast, Halloween Party, and decorating Main Street with Christmas lights and of course the Lions Roar. She said she will continue to play an active role as a Lion member and is looking forward to becoming Second Vice in September. “I am honored to be Osseo’s Lion of the Year; I think we have a great club that I can’t say enough about,� Danelius said. “I’m looking forward to this next year and can’t wait to serve our community.�

Music, parade, fun planned at the 40th Osseo Lions Roar This year’s 40th Annual Osseo Lions Roar festivities take place Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10. Most of the events of this year’s Lions Roar events take place along Third Street N.W., between Central Avenue and First Avenue N.W. unless otherwise noted. The winners of the Osseo Lions Roar Raffle will be announced at 8 p.m. on Sept. 10. Events include: food, parade, inflatable rides, music and more. FRIDAY, SEPT. 9 The Craft Fair and Arts in the Park and Sidewalk Sale will take place from noon to 5 p.m. along Central Avenue and in Boerboom Veterans Memorial Park across from Osseo City Hall.
