assage is no longer considered a luxury. It’s about taking care of yourself.
That’s the biggest change in perception Cathy Stahlke has seen she became a massage therapist 23 years ago, and it’s the mantra of Balance Life Wellness, her Waconia business that marks its 10th anniversary this year. Balance Life is a group of wellness professionals offering massage therapy, yoga and pilates studio classes, acupuncture and reflexology. The focus is on providing relaxation, therapy and healthy alternatives to help individuals achieve balance and wellness in their lives. “Taking care of yourself should never be considered a luxury. There is only one you,” Stahlke said. “Traditional health care waits for signs or symptoms to occur and then reacts. We emphasize that it is easier to stay healthy than it is to get healthy.”
only for relaxation and stress relief; but also for recovery from neck and other pain from automobile accidents, repetitive stress and other injuries, treatment for concussions and more. Stahlke became a part-time massage therapist to help people, but massage also helped her deal with her own stresses working in the marketing and advertising field. As a migraine headache-sufferer, Stahlke says she experienced the benefits of massage therapy first-hand. Strongly interested in providing the same relief to others, and in making a career change, she began her education to become a certified massage therapist. After receiving her certification in 1995, Stahlke began her new career at a Mankato chiropractic office. Embracing the opportunity to work with clients and patients, she effectively began marketing the therapeutic massage offerings.
And she emphasizes that massage can offer significant benefits in terms of relieving stress, treating injuries – even helping cancer patients deal with the effects of chemotherapy. “We have recognized the healing power of touch for some time,” Stahlke said. “But now doctors are prescribing massage, which has given it a greater level of validity.”
After building up that aspect of the business to four therapists and finding success and repeat clients, Stahlke sought a greater challenge and the satisfaction of owning her own business. She also recognized the need and growing interest in natural and quality wellness products, as well as holistic alternatives and enhancements to traditional healthcare.
When she started doing massage therapy, the general perception was that massage was a luxury offered at clubs and expensive spas, a notion she dislikes immensely. “Makes massage seem elite and superficial,” she said. But now massage is applied widely not
In 1998, she parlayed her skills into Balance Life, LLC, in Mankato. Based on the theory of “stronger together,” Stahlke brought a group of experienced certified massage therapists under one roof, sharing expertise, and enabling the group as a whole to have a greater outreach than each could do individually. “I am not surprised by Cathy’s success,” said Marsha Murphy, one of WESTMETROSCENE.COM

Stahlke and her husband Gary eventually relocated to the Twin Cities area and she sold her business to a therapist who had worked with her for years. That business continues to operate in Mankato under a new name. While starting their family, Cathy worked part-time at a chiropractic office in the west metro, again implementing tissue therapy and therapeutic massage sessions prior to chiropractic care.

Realizing a need in the Waconia area for massage therapy services, and knowing the success of the business model she had used in Mankato, Stahlke made the decision to create and build a Balance Life in Waconia. In 2008, Balance Life opened its doors with three experienced therapists and massage therapy as a foundation of business. Gayle Guthland was one of the first people to walk through Balance Life’s door and has remained a loyal client ever since. “I do weekly studio classes, as well as, regular massage and acupuncture sessions, she said. “Balance Life has helped me recover from injuries and cancer treatments, and continues to help me maintain a healthy lifestyle. “ Balance Life added acupuncture and Chinese medicine to its menu of wellness services in January 2011. In August 2012, Balance Life expanded to its current 2,400 square-foot location at 138 South Olive St. And again, Stahlke’s marketing imprint was not only on the new service offerings but also on the facility design. The welcoming and soothing space offers a comfortable waiting area, warm and relaxing treatment rooms, and a large studio facility with weekly class offerings. Today the Balance Life team comprises 12 wellness practitioners and two front office staff, with plans to add another acupuncturist and one more massage therapist this year. “You are only as good as those around you, and I have surrounded myself with the best, Stahlke said. “Balance Life has success because of our incredible group of wellness practitioners. I am grateful to have this team. They are
educated, highly trained, with more than 75 years of combined experience. “I am so blessed to be a part of the Balance Life group, said Kim Heckmann, certified massage therapist. “I love working with Cathy. She is always encouraging me to learn and to grow in my profession,

The Balance Life team also is deeply vested in the community, Stahlke notes, volunteering at Relay for Life and other local charity and fundraising events. “The goal of Balance Life is to help our community be healthier and make a difference in the lives of the people around us, Stahlke said. “As a society, we pack as much in to one day that we possibly can and, let’s face it – people are stressed out. Educating and promoting self-care and healing is the business of Balance Life.

This helps me to get more out of my workouts and the ability to perform better. Therapeutic massage has become a regular part of my wellness routine. For the future, Stahlke notes that massage as hospital based complementary care continues to grow. “We are coming into the best years for it, she said. “For illness, injury, postsurgical treatment and infant delivery, complementary care decreases pain and anxiety and increases the healing process. Never underestimate the healing power of touch!

or those interested in horses, hounds, and the experience of a traditional fox hunt, the Long Lake Hounds may be worth checking out. The Long Lake Hounds is a “drag” hunt. This means that prior to the hunt, a fox scent is dragged on horseback to create the scent that will be pursued by the hounds later that day. Hounds and horses then work together in pursuit of the “fox” to create a thrilling and traditional fox hunt experience. The Long Lake Hounds are led by Joint Masters of the Long Lake Hunt Jeanne Ahrenholz and Nancy Bizzano. They also have a huntsman, Kristin Olson, and a kennelman, Rich Ader. The group also has a clubhouse and kennels for its pack of 20 hounds located in Buffalo, Minnesota. They have been going strong since 1959, as Minnesota’s only hunt. “The masters of the hunt, they’re like CEOs of the hunt. They just kind of make sure that everything happens,” Ahrenholz explains.

“We plan the schedule. We make sure that the kennels are running smoothly and the hounds are being taken care of. We have two employees, a huntsman and a kennelman and we manage them; and I’ll tell you what, we do everything. I mean, I’m out there several times a week walking the hounds. We take care of the trails. We make sure all of the landowner relations are good because we hunt on over 200 landowners’ places. And we help plan the social activities. We have a hunt ball, and several hunt breakfasts, and we have the blessing of the hounds in the fall. Ahrenholz adds that while the masters of the hunt put in a lot of time and effort, they wouldn’t be able to keep the club going without their fellow riders. “Our members also work hard to support the hunt. Riders are in good hands with their
and they encourage riders of all levels to come out for the experience and to learn alongside them. “The only way to learn is to come out and ride with us and just kind of gradually learn what to do, what not to do, how to enjoy yourself. It’s just a slow learning process, but I think we’re very welcoming. Ahrenholz and Bizzano both agree that the greatest draw of the Long Lake Hounds is the connection they offer to animals. “I love that it’s a great activity to do with my horse, and I love the friendships that I’ve made, says Ahrenholz. “It’s a great physical activity for them and their horses. They will develop a real love for horses, hounds and the countryside, and they will have family wherever they go in the world. Wherever there are fox hunts. While Ahrenholz is more focused on the horses, Bizzano’s heart belongs to the hounds. When asked about her favorite part of the hunt, the joint master knew what her response would be. “The hounds. Love the hounds. Love

Part of Bizzano and Ahrenholz’s duties as joint masters of the hunt is to take care of the hounds. They go out several times a week to personally walk the hounds, but there is also a kennelman charged with the care of the hounds. Another reason that people join the hunt is because they enjoy experiencing the traditions that go along with it, such as the traditional outfits, the signals blown on the huntsman’s horn, and the hunt ball, an annual black tie event. However, the Long Lake Hounds website states, “While there is a standard dress code, we understand that those who are new to the sport will not have the appropriate clothing. We ask that you turnout as you would for a show—dark jacket, tan or beige breeches, white shirt or turtleneck, gloves, ATSM approved helmet, and boots. It is not necessary for a new rider to purchase new clothing to try this sport.” The fact that the Long Lake Hounds

he ukulele—one of the happiest instruments known to man—made its home in Watertown in the spring of 2016 thanks to one resident, LeeAnn Olson. After stumbling upon a ukulele group in Two Harbors, Olson thought it would be a great way to get a group of people together in her own town. So, upon her return to Watertown, she spoke with friends and other community members about forming a local ukulele group. Met with much enthusiasm, the Watertown Ukulele Group was born. “It’s just fun and relaxing to get together and play and have a great time,” said Olson, founder of the group. “It’s a real bright spot.” Members of the group take turns hosting practices, which usually involve a bottle of wine and a treat to share. The practices last about an hour and a half during which time the group plays all different kinds of music. Folk songs are among the most common choices for the group. However, they do dabble in other kinds of music, playing songs such as “Home on the Range,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Moonshadow.” Typically, members will just bring in any music they’d like to try playing with the group. According to Olson, there’s a real variety amid the group in terms of different genres they can play and perform. “We did the [Crow River Radio Hour] last year and we played ‘Swinging on a Star.’ That was a fun one!” Olson said. The Crow River Radio Hour is a community event featuring local musical talent and a fictional radio show that focuses on life in Watertown. Melody Soderberg, a member of the
Watertown Ukulele Group who participated in the show, said the Crow River Radio Hour was a fun challenge because the group had a collective end-goal in sight. “Our focus was all together. We were working toward a goal and that’s where I think we really came together, she explained. A number of people joined the group over the years with a wide range of abilities. Most of the members had never played an instrument before, although they have had a few guitarists and singers join. “The ukulele is so easy to play, said Soderberg. “The first practice I went to, I had never picked one up, but by the time it was over, I was playing songs with the group. That was only like an hour later. It really is an instrument that you can just pick up and play. The Watertown Ukulele Group prides itself on welcoming anyone stating that new members can join with little
to no musical experience. Whenever a new member joins who has no knowledge of how to play the ukulele, seasoned members of the group take time at the beginning of practice to teach them a few cords. Then, they ease the new member into playing simpler, less complicated songs. Once the new member feels comfortable enough, the group will choose a song or two that’s a bit more challenging. “It’s actually pretty simple to learn enough to feel like you can actually play something, Olson said. On the surface, it may seem strange to have a group dedicated to the ukulele in central Minnesota, of all places, because it often drums up images of beaches basking beneath a warm, summer sun. However, with seasonal depression running rampant during the winter months, it seems the uku-

With previous members moving away or having to leave the group for various reasons, Olson and Soderberg worry they’ll have to disband. “It’s just been a few of us that have been getting together because we enjoy it so much, Olson said. “It’s kind of hard. They hope to find at least 5 or 6 new members to join the group. With that many people consistently showing up at practices, the group could rehearse some songs and accept opportunities to play publicly that have been presented to them by the community.
“[Then] if we have a consistent day for rehearsals, people can work them into their calendar just like anything else,â€? Soderberg said. “They’re not kidding when they said ‘the more the merrier’ because we really [do] have a good time the larger the group.â€? Olson and Soderberg will continue playing even if the group is forced to disband. Their love of the instrument and simply getting together with like-minded people to play music is what keeps them going through this struggle. “I think that’s the endgame‌to just have someone that you can play with,â€? Soderberg said. “LeeAnn and I will always play together‌I will never disband.â€? Anyone interested in joining the Watertown Ukulele Group, can contact LeeAnn Olson at 952955-1907 or check out the group’s Facebook page. Their practices tend to vary depending on time and place. Olson and Soderberg encourage anyone to stop by and have a listen—even if they’re not entirely sure this group is for them. The bright melody of the ukulele will surely sweep potential members away.

right here, Coleman said. This burger features a half pound patty made from 100 percent ground chuck, smothered in cheddar, with crumbled bleu cheese as well as bacon. The Ox Yoke Inn isn’t the only establishment that pays homage to the famed Luce Line Railway that once crossed the region. Follow the Luce Line Trail farther west and you come across another restaurant that celebrates that heritage. The Luce Line Lodge in downtown Watertown offers several burgers that reflect the area. From the German burger featuring sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing to the Box Car featuring Pepper Jack cheese, jalapeùos and sour cream.

burger. A name that the burger has well earned. “It’s going to make you feel like a train wreck after you eat it, Paine laughed. “Because it’s so much. It’s very, very filling. The mountain of a burger features two 1/3 pound patties smothered in Swiss and American cheese, topped with mushrooms, bacon and onions. For those who are iron-stomached enough to attempt to conquer the Train Wreck, it may take a bit more to match what one Waconia eatery offers. Hopper’s Bar and Grill, located in downtown Wa-
conia, prides itself on its Belt Buster Burger. And what would a big burger be if there wasn’t a big

challenge to go along with it. “We wanted to make a double burger that was big,” said Paul Mackenthun, owner. “And it kind of sprawled into a challenge.” For those who find one Belt Buster, with two half-pound patties and cheese topped with bacon, not enough, then they are invited to take the Belt Buster Challenge.
Two win, the customer has to eat two Beltbusters, along with the fries, in under an hour without getting up from the seat. If a person can pull it off, they will get the meal for free. “It’s two pounds of hamburger, it’s about a pound of bacon, eight slices of cheese on a bun—so it’s a lot,” Mackenthun laughed. “We’ve had a number of success stories, but we’ve had a lot more failures.” “We’ve had people quit with literally 10 French fries left on the plate and they say ‘I just can’t do it, I’m done,’” Mackenthun laughed. These are only a few of the many options that scatter the dining landscape through the West Metro. While burgers may seem simple, inventive local eateries have proved they are anything but.
