Snowbirds search for warmer climes when the snow flies

I

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lovely day and the snow is gently falling. Gazing out my window is like looking at a beautiful â&#x20AC;&#x153;winter wonderland.â&#x20AC;? How is it, then, that several of my friends have or will soon become STORY BY â&#x20AC;&#x153;snowbirdsâ&#x20AC;?? Of SUE course I know the DRESSEN answer to that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they PHOTOS SUBMITTED hate the winters here, as do I. But they have already taken steps to leave and I have not. I decide to start a quest. Where would I like to go and why?

My first stop is to see Kate Carlson at Travel Easy in Waconia. She explains the many options that are afforded snowbirds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; northerners who are 55 or older who move or travel south in the winter for a period of four weeks or longer.

Things to consider for this migration are housing options â&#x20AC;&#x201C; such as renting a condo, home, or RV space as opposed to buying a second home or condo or time share unit.

We all want to be in warmer places, but what would we like to do? Are we fairly active or are we more content to stay home and work in a garden or read a book? Would we like to be located near family members?

Are good medical facilities a concern? There are so many things to consider so I decided to check with my friends.

Peter and Sue have been retired for 16 years. They spent their first couple years in Florida when a friend of theirs suggested Gulf Shores or Orange Beach in Alabama.

These ocean-front properties are located on the Gulf of Mexico just west of Pensacola. The climate is a little cooler than

Florida and the real estate is not as expensive.

They decided to check it out and have been going back ever since. They opted to rent a highrise condo with three bedrooms and three baths and have rented the same unit for the last three years. They normally go down in November and stay through April. Peter is an avid golfer and plays at least twice a week.

There are so many Minnesota snowbirds in the area that every Tuesday is Minnesota Day bringing at least 250 to 300 people together for a day of activities in their community center.

Larry and Cathy have only been retired for two years, but they have been spending winters in Mexico for as long as I can remember. They love the slower pace in Mexico. They also love the beauty of the ocean and the beaches. Their idea of retirement is not to be busy, but to take walks, read books and take a â&#x20AC;&#x153;siestaâ&#x20AC;? every day. They have three condos that they can use back to back or break up into shorter visits during the winter.

Their condos are spacious, so they often have their families and friends join them.

Jim and Carol have also been retired for 12 years. Over the years, Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job took them from Minnesota to Wisconsin to California.

When they decided to retire they returned to Wisconsin.

Even though they enjoyed winter sports like snowmobiling and skiing, the winters soon proved to be too long and too cold for them. They missed their motorcycle trips, sailing, gardening and trap-shooting. They started searching for their ideal retirement home in Texas. This put

A second move in Texas put them on a golf course and closer to the Gulf.

In 2009, they sold the house in Texas and that winter they rented a small house in the Keys of Florida. In 2011, they purchased a home in Florida that was only a block from the water, with a slip for their boat. This location has perfect weather, is on the ocean and a golf course, and with their history they have friends everywhere!

Given all this information, I am still unsure as to where I would like to spend my winters. I know that I want to be warm. I know that I would not go anywhere until after the holidays and probably would like to return in April, but at this point that is all I know.

I think I will heed the advice of my travel agent and start sampling a couple places each winter and I think I will start this winter!

Few people would likely say they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enjoy traveling. Travel provides an opportunity to experience different cultures, visit idyllic locales and enjoy some rest and relaxation. But as much as people love to travel, finding more time to do so is not always so easy, even for those people with a sufficient amount of vacation days at their disposal. Oftentimes, finding more time to travel requires some extra and earlier planning.

Travel is a luxury that even busy men and women can enjoy if they employ certain strategies to create more time to get away.

RECONSIDER WHEN YOU TRAVEL. Building a trip around a long weekend is an easy way to find more time to travel. Consider the holidays that fall on a Monday, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. Plan a getaway for these long weekends and you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even need to use a vacation day. If you have the vacation time to burn, extend the trip one day by leaving on Friday or returning on Tuesday. By the time your trip ends, you will have enjoyed a three-day getaway without using any vacation time or a

four-day extended break during which you used just a single day of vacation time. Planning a week-long trip on a holiday week is another way to save a vacation day for later in the year.

>> EXTEND BUSINESS TRIPS. Business travelers who typically travel on Mondays and/ or return home on Fridays can extend those trips to include the weekend preceding or following the trip. This gives you a better chance to explore the city where conferences or client meetings are being held, as business

trips typically leave little time to get to a know a city or see its attractions.

Business travelers can plan family trips around their work trips, giving families a great and often cost-effective way to see various locales.

>> USE YOUR ALLOTTED VACATION TIME.

A 2013 study from Oxford Economics found that American workers took an average of 16 days of vacation in 2013, which represented a roughly 20 percent decline from 2000, when workers took an average of 20.3 vacation days. The United States Travel Association discovered a similar pattern, finding that in 2013 workers used just 16 of their nearly 21 days of earned time off. Perhaps the easiest way working men and women can find more time to travel is to make use of all of the vacation days they earn as opposed to letting them fall by the wayside at the end of their companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; calendar years.

>> NEGOTIATE WITH YOUR EMPLOYER. Many employers have grown increasingly flexible as technology has made it easier for employees to work remotely. Workers who want to find more time to travel should not be afraid to negotiate more travel time with their employers, even offering to work remotely from whichever destination they plan to visit. This can be an especially effective way for parents to extend family vacations in the summer, as one parent can take the kids in the mornings and afternoons while the other works. Come nighttime, the whole family can still enjoy all the fun of a typical vacation.

“If you get that heart rate up for just ten or 15 minutes, you’ll have more energy to do your regular routine,” she said.

Whether or not you’ve gotten to the point where working out is comfortable, even in winter when the lakes are frozen and bike lanes are icy, you can exercise.

VanEyll works both as a personal trainer and group fitness coach at Shape It Up. She often tells her clients to consider a simple activity, like cleaning out a closet, a workout, as long as you don’t sit down in the middle.

Johnson suggested using a tabata timer. There are plenty of free smartphone applications with these interval timers. They are structured to encourage you to push yourself with one specific, high intensity exercise for 20 seconds, rest for 10 and repeat as many times as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like.

He said most use the music from your own library, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re guaranteed to like it.

Shoveling snow is another of her favorite workouts. Again, you kill two birds with one snowball; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have a usable driveway again and a healthier body. She said she likes to go for walks on the ice. You have to be more cautious when running in the winter, she explained, as black ice is something to watch for as you hit the pavement in the colder months.

outdoor sports to play in the winter. From skiing and snowboarding to ice-skating and snowshoeing, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something for every activity level. The Pedal Wild owner said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll choose playing hockey with his kids over anything.

GO TO A GYM Minnesota has been lauded as a biking state for years, but what do you do when the bike lanes are icy?

Johnson suggests you try biking indoors at his studio. He outfitted Pedal Wild with RealRyder bikes.

They are made to turn and move with you, working much better than a stationary bike. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working on balance, strength and cardio all in the same hour,â&#x20AC;? Johnson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your core, legs and arms are all engaged.â&#x20AC;?

Johnson said he and his team work to provide high-intensity, low-impact group personal training for their customers. Not only do they use the bikes, but also offer yoga and classes to work your core.

Both Johnson and VanEyll

offer TRX training, a suspension training system originating from the Navy SEALS training. These bright yellow straps hang from the ceiling and help you work out using your own body weight.

VanEyll and her team offer group fitness, both small group and personal training and nutrition classes.

The Shape It Up Fitness owner created a schedule to accommodate the needs of her busy customers, including classes that only last half an hour. These classes are specifically planned to fit before and after work, the earliest starts at 5:30 a.m.

Diet and exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle.

While even the busiest men and women can find ways to eat healthy, finding time to exercise can be more difficult. According to the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, regular physical activity can prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and stroke, which are the three leading causes of healthrelated death in the United States. In addition, men and women who are not physically active are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise helps people control their weight while promoting bone, muscle and joint health.

While the benefits of regular exercise are substantial, finding the time for daily exercise is not always so easy. The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ as they attempt to make more time in their days to exercise.

>> REEXAMINE YOUR FREE TIME.

Few adults, and especially those juggling families and careers, have an abundance of free time.

But reexamining the ways you are spending your free time may help you uncover some moments for daily exercise. The Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition notes that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 need at least

two and a half hours each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. While that may seem like a lot, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only slightly more than 20 minutes per day. It helps to supplement such aerobic activity with some strength-training activities at least two days per week. Try waking up 20 to 30 minutes earlier each day, using that time to hit the treadmill or

jog around the neighborhood. You likely wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be affected by waking up earlier, and you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to alter your existing schedule for the rest of the day, either. If mornings arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t your thing, make better use of your lunch hour, going for a jog or visiting your companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exercise facilities if that option is available to you.

>> WORK WHILE YOU EXERCISE. Technology has made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office even when you are nowhere near your desk. People who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to find time to exercise often cite the demands of their job as the primary reason behind their inactivity, but those same individuals can use the technology at their disposal, be it smartphones that allow them keep track of work emails or tablets that make it possible to connect remotely to office servers, to work while they exercise.

>> REDUCE YOUR SEDENTARY TIME. A

2008 study from Australian researchers found that people who regularly break up their sedentary time, including the hours they sit behind their desk at the office, with movement had healthier waist circumferences, body mass indexes and triglycerides than those who did not. While hourly breaks to walk around the office might not seem like exercise, such breaks can benefit your long-term health.

>> GET CREATIVE. Many people associ-

ate daily exercise with private gyms, and while gyms can serve as excellent motivators and great places to get fullbody workouts, time involved in driving to and from the gym can make it difficult to commit to gym memberships.

But you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need a gym membership to live a healthy lifestyle. When possible, take the stairs instead of an elevator and park farther away from your office door so you get a small cardiovascular workout on your way into and out of the office. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, walk or bike around your neighborhood.

Such simple gestures may seem insignificant, but the more creative ways you find to exercise each day, the more beneficial such efforts become.

COLLINS A drink akin to a sour which is served in a tall glass with soda water or seltzer water.

The Barrel Gin Old Fashioned is a simple, classic cocktail meant to accentuate the smoothness of J. Carver Barrel Gin. The gin takes on the flavor of the white oak barrels it’s aged in, which are previously used to age rye whiskey. EGGNOG A traditional holiday drink containing a combination of eggs beaten with cream or milk, sugar, and a liquor such as brandy, rum, or bourbon.

FLIP The Frisco starts with the striking blast of rye whiskey but quickly tempers down to the rich sweetness of turbinado. TASTES OF THE SEASON Restaurant goes the extra mile (literally) to keep menu items locally-sourced

W

hen owner Stephanie Bolles says she serves locally-sourced food at Dakota Junction restaurant in Mound, she means it.

In fact, you might see her biking down the Dakota STORY AND Rail Trail to visit her PHOTOS BY neighbors at Three THERESA Rivers Park District’s MALLOY Gale Woods Farm, just a mile down the road.

Bolles will pick the vegetables and bike them back to the small trail-side restaurant, and voilà, fresh vegetables are on your plate.

“Everybody loves it,” she said.

“They’re excited when I say we’ve just picked this today.”

Bolles will literally go the extra mile to Big Stone Mini Golf Course and pick fresh tomatoes from Bruce Stillman’s garden, when it is in season.

Another supplier is Minnetonka Orchards in nearby Minnetrista, which is a six-minute drive (or 22-minute bike ride).

Bolles said the idea of the locally-sourced food started when she moved to town and walked

the Dakota Trail with her baby to Gale Woods Farm.

“I was impressed with the food they had there,” she said.

“And I love their concept of how they were growing things, and how passionate they are about it.”

She joined the farm’s CSA – or community sustainable agriculture – program, where she could go once a month and pick vegetables.

“We enjoyed getting stuff from there we had never tried before and just taking the green stuff and experimenting with it,” she said.

The wheels started turning about how to get more people to know about the delicious food right in their backyard.

When the restaurant opened in November 2013, former Mound Mayor Mark Hanus said ribbon cuttings were not something that happened often in the city.

Two years later, the restaurant is thriving and is doubling its numbers, according to Bolles.

An order counter greets guests as they walk in, with a chef preparing food just feet away. On a board is the handwritten menu Bolles and her two chefs have worked out based on seasonal ingredients.

Walking to the dining area, you pass a sign that is a rendering of text from the 1917 U.S. Department of Agriculture. Almost a century later, this is happening in places like Dakota Junction as the farm-to-table business continues to bloom.

Of course every ingredient is not locally sourced, but Bolles said she is mindful of what is in season and uses all organic ingredients.

Bolles said Gale Woods staff will often call to relay what ingredients are available, and she will brainstorm with the chefs.

Bolles had regulars who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to give their suggestions, which again adds to that community feel.

1 onion, thinly sliced

Arrange onion slices in bottom of one slow cooker stoneware, overlapping as necessary. Cut brisket in half and place on top of onions. Sprinkle with chipotle pepper, garlic, cumin, and salt. Pour tomato juice over top.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer beef and onions to a tray. Pour liquid into a deep bowl. Using two forks, shred beef. Return beef and onions to the stoneware. Skim fat from liquid and pour over beef mixture. Sprinkle with cilantro. Turn to warm for serving.

To serve, spoon beef mixture and salsa into center of each warm tortilla, then fold tortilla over filling.

TIP: Chipotle peppers are smoked jalapeno peppers and are often found canned in adobo sauce.

Use one for this recipe, then freeze the rest in an airtight container for up to 6 months. For even more convenience, separate the peppers and place in a single layer on a tray, topped with a little adobo sauce; freeze until firm, then transfer each pepper to a sealable freezer bag. You can then use just the amount you need for each recipe.

The prevalence of soy products in recipes and ready-made foods has skyrocketed in recent years. Soy-based milk products and others that substitute soy with more traditional ingredients are no longer relegated to the outskirts of the neighborhood grocery store. While soy is being consumed in greater numbers than in decades past, some people are still unaware of the various health benefits and advantages to including soy in their diets.

Soyfoods provide a number of nutritional benefits for people of all ages.

Promise of fish

When the water freezes over, Lake Waconia, Lake Minnetonka and other lakes around the state will be dotted with ice houses as fishermen ready themselves for winter.

But, ice fishing is about more than just adapting fishing to the cold weather. For many, it’s evolved into a recreational and entertainment experience in their ice houses.

“It’s relaxing in the house. You can play cards, watch the game. It’s a lot of fun,” said Jimmy STORY BY Mase of Waconia’s In Towne Marina.

“You can’t do that in a boat.”

Sometimes, ice fishing isn’t even the point. Don Iverson, owner of Metro Lakes Marina & Rentals LLC in Mound, said one group brings multiple TVs, closes up the ice holes and turns it into a college-football-watching house on ice.

Fishing or not, the atmosphere out on the ice is a big attraction.

“A lot of it is a party,” Iverson said.

“I see it with my buddies on Facebook,” Mase said. “They can’t wait to get out on the ice.”

Locals aren’t the only ones to enjoy ice fishing.

According to Iverson, out-of-state visitors also are drawn to the winter activity.

“They’re just amazed that they can walk on the ice and even more amazed that they can drive on the ice,” Iverson said.

THE ICE For those who don’t have an ice house, or are new to ice fishing, local marinas offer fish house rentals. The structures are pre-heated, drilled, and ready to go.

In Towne Marina, a family-owned business serving Waconia for more than 34 years, has plenty of options for patrons. The rentals can seat up to six people, and can come with amenities like carpeting, lighting and even a card table.

“We make sure you don’t have to worry about a thing,” Mase said. “All you need to bring is your rod, license, and some bait.”

For Lake Minnetonka, Metro Lakes Marina & Rentals is one marina that offers various rentals for anglers headed out on the ice.

As far as ice houses, “You can kind of name it, we can put it in,” Iverson said.

He said ice house rental packages range from two-person novice setups to 80-person corporate event arrangements.

And for those who are looking to head out on their own, Mase said it’s still a good idea to check in with a bait shop or marina.

“We highly suggest to talk to any bait shop to find out ice conditions,” Mase said. “It can change quickly.”

Iverson echoed Mase’s suggestion.

“I’m out there every single day,” he added.

“I know what the ice conditions are and where the fish are.”

Mase said that while people at a bait shop may know a lot about the lake, they are like weathermen. They try to get it right, but that doesn’t always happen.

In addition to knowledge about the ice conditions, the staff at In Towne Marina are familiar with the hot spots of the lake. Whether it is Pillsbury Reef, Wagener’s Bay, or Waconia Bay, they know where the fish should be biting.

Mase said Lake Waconia is a great place for crappies and sunfish, but there are fish of all sizes in the lake.

“There was a good run here in the summer of good walleye activity,” Mase said. “We expect that to continue.”

On Lake Minnetonka, the top draw is the walleye, according to Iverson.

To catch one, timing is key.

“The times are dawn and dusk,” Iverson said.

Anglers on Lake Minnetonka are also on the lookout for panfish, crappies and sunnies, as well as northern.

Ultimately, when it comes to ice fishing, if anglers are having a good time and staying safe, they’re doing it right, even if they don’t catch anything.

INBOX Inbox is Googleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempt to make email more efficient and if your email inbox is basically a giant to-do list, then this is for you. Of course, the app is designed for Gmail, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only useful for those with Gmail accounts they moderately to heavily use. A big selling point is the userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to snooze emails to reappear at a later time and schedule reminders with just a few taps. Bundling of emails relating to trips, promotions and purchases is another way Inbox can help simplify the never-ending flood of emails.

ANY.DO Mobile to desktop syncing is a strong point for this app that allows you to set reminders for various tasks and to-doâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. On mobile, simply hold and drag items between the collapsible categories of â&#x20AC;&#x153;today,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;tomorrow,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;upcomingâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;someday.â&#x20AC;? WUNDERLIST Also a to-do list app, Wunderlist excels at making tasks sharable and interactive by allowing users to leave timestamped comments and easily collaborate on lists together. Microsoft, current owner of the app, released a new version of the app for Windows 10 in 2015. This version allows users to even dictate tasks to Cortana, Microsoftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice assistant. Popular lists can be pinned to a tile in the start menu. Beyond the free app, the pro version allows unlimited assigning of to-dos, up from the 25 allowed per list on the free version as well as other features, at the price of $4.99/month.
