SUN THISWEEK DAKOTA COUNTY TRIBUNE

One can get their fill of holiday cheer close to home this season, as each of the cities in the Sun Thisweek and Dakota County Tribune coverage area have several events to get people in the Christmas mood. Santa and reindeer sightings will abound in the coming weeks, along with theater and music productions that can warm the heart of even a Grinch or a Scrooge. The newspaper’s reporters have covered many of the annual events in the cities of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville and Rosemount over the years. Each year brings old and new faces to each of the events, some of which hearken back to days gone by of scenes set in such movies as “It’s a Wonderful Life or “The Christmas Story. The events encourage people to get out and make memories of their own with family, friends and neighbors. Some are for spectators, but many of the best events require participation by attendees, whether it’s singing a song or making a craft. The following pages offer a large list of events in each of the six cities. Though this is not comprehensive, the newspaper has attempted to bring together as many events as possible, so folks can have them in one source. Further updates to the list will be made online at hometownsource.com/ search/?k=holidays 2017 where other content related to the holidays also will be posted. One can always check out the calendar at SunThisweek.com, too. Following is a recap of some of the most prominent events in each of the six cities.

Sing for joy A great treat during the Holiday Lighting Ceremony in Burnsville’s Heart of the City 6-6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, is the music provided by the city’s young people. On the slate this year are Burnsville High School Freestyle Singers and the Sioux Trail Elementary Choir. The other centerpiece of the event is the massive amount of lights that illuminate the downtown area. More than 200,000 mini lights, 230 streetlight

The Holz Farm Old Fashioned Holiday in Eagan features a chance to make s’mores. snowflakes and a 30-foot-tall tree will be turned on after the countdown.

Variety pack Holiday on Main in downtown Lakeville 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. is a favorite event for many because it offers a wide range of activities in a quaint setting. People can take horse-drawn rides around the downtown area, see some live reindeer, listen to music, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, and make a craft. The event takes many volunteers to plan and work at all for the benefit of bringing smiles to local residents. The event is also a chance for people to check out the wide range of retailers in the downtown area who have plenty of gift-giving ideas in stock.

1940s relived A trip back in time is what the Holz Farm Old Fashioned Holiday offers 123:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. The Friends of the Farm expend a lot of time and energy to plan and work at this event that includes a chance to see the working farm turned into a 1940s scene. See EVENTS, 8

EVENTS, from 2 There will be plenty of animals to see along with music and Santa inside the historic farm house. Keep an eye on the weather as people will want to dress to fend of the cool temperatures.

Turn of the century For those who want to turn the clock back a little bit more, there’s the Village Holidays at Dakota City Heritage Village in Farmington. The event, which is held 1-8 p.m. Dec. 2-3 and 9-10, weather permitting, offers up Christmas Traditions of 1900 this year. Visiting the village in the winter is a transporting experience as there will be music, food and demonstrations to let people know of Christmas was celebrated in those days.

This one is going to rock

other local groups has staged Christmas at the Steeple Center since the city-owned venue opened in the former St. Joseph Church. “A Rock and Roll Christmas is the theme of this variety show at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, when the music of Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Brenda Lee and more will be revived.

Breakfast with Santa Nearly every local community does a Breakfast with Santa event, and Apple Valley does it in style. Children and parents can dine, play games, make crafts and meet the man with the bag Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Apple Valley Community Center.
