If you have yet to discover the beauty of Waconia and its people, you are in for a treat. This is the place where more than 150 years ago the first settlers knew they had found a place they could call home. The lake, the rich, fertile soils and abundance of wooded forests made this the perfect place for a community. Today, it has become a bustling community where history has welcomed modern day growth. Located in the heart of Carver County, the city of 10,250 continues on a balanced and deliberate growth pattern that has enabled it to meet the needs of its current residents, while always searching for new ways to greet tomorrow’s neighbors. Although the past four years have seen a slow down in growth, mirroring the economic times in which we live, this is a community that has managed to keep its identity while moving forward with an eye toward change. The current population of the city is 10,260, which is more include Fronterra, Windmill Creek, Oakpointe, and Waterford, than double what it was 10 years ago. Dakota Rail Trail open Carver County celebrated its 100th birthday at the 1955 County Fair. An estimated 20,000 people watched the centennial parade in Waconia.

Outdoor recreational opportunities have always been plentiful for Waconia residents, but now there is another option for citizens desiring a scenic place to exercise or just enjoy a beautiful day. The Dakota Rail Trail is now open from St. Bonifacius to Mayer, skirting the north shore of Lake Waconia. One of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most scenic trails, the Dakota Rail Trail, which is paved, has been a popular option for runners, walkers, bikers and inline skaters in southwestern Hennepin County since it was constructed along a 13-mile stretch of the old Dakota Rail bed in 2009. The original trail runs from Wayzata to St. Bonifacius, offering spectacular views as it stretches along the northern and western shores of Lake Minnetonka and weaves through the lakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s various inlets. The trail was recently extended to Mayer with 7

a grand opening on May 21, 2011. The trail is currently 20 miles from Wayzata to Mayer. The new portion of the trail offers even more stunning views, this time from the northern shore of Lake Waconia. This is the first summer that the trail has been open for use in Carver County. The most elaborate work took place place at highways 7 and 92, near St. Bonifacius, where bridges were constructed over both roads to provide safe passage for walkers and bikers. There is plenty of parking for trail users at the city administration building on Kennedy Memorial Drive, just a block north of Highway 7 in St. Bonifacius or at the trailhead in Mayer, just off Highway 25. A map of the trail is posted at both ends, as well as every two miles along the path. The next phase of the trail will extend from Mayer to the west edge of Carver County.

Nickle Dickle celebrates 50 The 50th Annual Nickle Dickle Day celebration will be bigger and better than ever on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011. Held the second Saturday after Labor Day, this annual community celebration brings an estimated 20,000 people to Waconia for a day of old fashioned fun. Its origins are rooted in the deep commitment of the business community to make Waconia a family-friendly destination. In 1961 two business owners, Ralph Molnau and Art Laufenberger, attended a State Chamber of Commerce meeting and were inspired to try something new. They were looking for a way to bring people into town to shop and learned of an event strategy that was working for other towns. The idea they wanted to pursue was sidewalk sales. They returned to Waconia with a great event idea, but knew that the event should have

a catchy name. Some of the names suggested were Crazy Days, Water Days and Harvest Days. After much discussion, merchants began to focus on the sale of five cent objects. Art Laufenberger came up with Nickle Dickle Day. In the early years retailers put all the goods they wanted to sell on tables in front of their shops. As an added event, John Scheuble, who started Waconia Farm Supply, created the Crop Shows. Each business had a vegetable contest in front of their shop and each shop had a winner. The VFW used to sell 5-cent sloppy joe’s, with people lining the streets to get theirs. Pillow fluffing is still available there. Many people remember the greased pig contest, bingo and the ever popular ping pong ball drop from a helicopter. That event ended when too many people were climbing on roof 11

tops to find the lucky ping pong ball. A new event was added in the mid 1980s, the Antique and Collector Car and Truck show. Also added were food and craft vendors in City Square Park. In the early 1990s, St. Joe’s added a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and Community Education added fun runs. Along with all of that fun, you’ll see live music, duck races, over 130 craft booths, 14 food vendors, the library book sale, and a mechanical bull. To help celebrate 50 years in 2011, the day will culminate with a street dance. Then of course there is that staple to Nickle Dickle...shopping. This remains the biggest selling day for retailers in downtown Waconia – most featuring specials all day long. Ice arena opens a new era There will be an estimated 400 media representatives from a wide area in Waconia next May for the Governor’s Fishing Opener.

There was a time when playing hockey in Waconia meant lacing up the skates and climbing into a parka and pulling on a wool cap. Not so anymore. For the last three years residents of Waconia have enjoyed and used the community’s new ice arena. It’s not a only available for community use, but it’s the home arena for Waconia High School hockey and the Waconia Hockey Association (WHA). The city and WHA are largely responsible for making this facility a reality for the community. The arena features a single sheet of ice, seating capacity for 650 people, a heated viewing area and a large mezzanine viewing area. The building is attached to a warming house which serves an outdoor skating arena. There are open skate times scheduled throughout the summer, as well as adult open hockey and lessons for both figure skaters and hockey 13

skaters. The arena does shut down between midMay and mid-July for routine maintenance. During that time frame the city inspects the building for any issues, such as cracks in the floor under the rink or mechanical issues with any of the building’s cooling or heating equipment. Skating classes are offered at a number of levels, from beginner to basic skills to specialty classes. For a party or more personal recreational use, the arena is available for rent. Fire protection and service This year is the 50th anniversary of Nickle Dickle Day in Waconia. It was started by retailers and is run by the chamber of commerce.

The volunteer firefighters of the Waconia Fire Department have been protecting the people and property of this area for 128 years. The department has built its reputation on hard work and a commitment to updated training. It relies heavily on the City of Waconia for its financial support, which allows major equipment purchases. It also works extensively with area townships that contract for services. Eventually the city will be looking at a possible relocation of the fire building, perhaps to an area that can accommodate a larger facility, but also make it more centrally located to the areas the department serves. The department also provides volunteer support at numerous community functions throughout the year, including Nickle Dickle 15

Day, the triathlon and band festival, as well as the County Fair. On Memorial Day the fire department also participates in a parade, where veterans from the area are honored for their service to country. On Sept. 11 it hosts a remembrance service at City Square Park, to reflect on the losses of our country during a terrorist strike on Sept. 11, 2001. There are 37 members of the volunteer department. Officers include Chief Randy Sorensen, Assistant Chief Mark Morse, Engine Captain Jeff Borg, Hose Captain Brandon Kolesar, Ladder Captain Justin Sorensen, Safety Captain Brian Roy, Training Captain Aaron Sorensen, Lt. Safari Island a paradise Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, when he was an attorney, helped the city and school create an agreement to build and operate Safari Island.

In the boom year’s of tourism, Waconia was referred to as Paradise of the Northwest. Today, that paradise can still be found in many areas of the city, including the community center known as Safari Island. The centerpiece of Waconia’s parks and recreation department, it offers a large aquatics center, complete with two separate pools, fitness center, four court gymnasium, meeting rooms, large play area for children and elevated running track around the courts. For the competitive swimmer, the eight lane Olympic-size pool is a dream come true. It’s 12 feet at its deepest point, offers a pair of diving boards, as well as a ramped entry off the west lane for folks in wheelchairs or people who simply want to walk into the water. Next to the competitive pool is the leisure pool. It features a two-story water slide, roughly 157 feet in total length. Play fountains and a zerodepth entry make this an ideal pool for families and small children. A whirlpool in the northeast 17

corner completes the experience. Locker facilities are provided for all people and are located right next to the pool area. For runners and walkers, an elevated track, about 200 meters in length, can be found overlooking four basketball courts. The four-court gymnasium makes this the largest gymnasium space in the community. Just outside the running area, a fitness area comes complete with treadmills, stationary bikes, weight machines, dumbbells and other equipment. This area overlooks the swimming pools. The center also features meeting rooms and the community’s largest and currently its only indoor play structure for kids. It features slides, climbing tubes, ladders, balls and nets. Adult recreation classes are also offered. The facility is located at the west end of Community Drive, and is connected to Clearwater Middle School. Recreation for a lifetime There is an abundance of recreation for you to enjoy in the Waconia area.

Swimming The only public beach on Lake Waconia is the 105-acre Lake Waconia Regional Park, located on the south shore of Lake Waconia near the Lake Waconia Event Center. It is accessed from Hwy. 5 via Paradise Lane. It is part of the Carver County park system which includes Baylor Park west of New Germany and Minnewashta Park between Victoria and Chanhassen. The park also includes a picnic shelter available for rent, bathrooms, playground, volleyball court, picnic tables and grills and sledding hill. Safari Island, Waconia’s community center, also offers indoor swimming opportunities with an Olympic-sized lap and diving pool. In addition, there is a zero grade pool with a two story waterslide and water playground for young children and a whirlpool hot tub for relaxation.

Fishing Lake Waconia provides some of the best fishing in the metro. Bass, walleye, northern pike, sunfish, crappies and many other types of fish can be hooked in Waconia. In 2012 it will host the Governor’s Fishing Opener. A fishing pier is located at Cedar Point Park, near the tennis courts off Lake Street. Other fishing “holes” located nearby include Parley Lake with a public access on its southwest shore, Reitz Lake with an access on the northwest shore, Pierson’s Lake with an access on its west central shore and Hydes Lake with a public access on its northeast shore. While Burandt’s Lake is actually connected to Lake Waconia by a series of streams and swamps, nearly all of its lake shore is privately owned and has no public access.

Golf & Bowling The closest course is Island View Golf Course. It is an 18-hole, 72 par

course that overlooks Lake Waconia. It has a full service club house with carts and driving range. The number is 952442-6116. Timber Creek Golf Course is located on County Road 15 near Watertown. A festival of marching The original marching band logo was designed in 1975 by Waconia cymbal player Ginny Steinhagen. She played bass clarinet in the concert band.

For the 13th year in a row, Waconia will host one of the premier summer marching band events, the Annual Lake Waconia Band Festival. It will be held June 18 on Main Street in Waconia, starting at 6 p.m. The featured band at the event will be your own Waconia High School Marching Band. It has been one of the leading marching machines of the state for more than three decades. Big Black has captured more than 228 grand champion or first place awards in the last 36 years and has marched in dozens of national festivals. More than one dozen different groups will march this year. Some of the top schools that will march this year include Park Center, Litchfield, Waconia, Mankato Area 77 Lancers, Owatonna and the Waconia Drumline, which will kick of the 2011 festival with a variety of cadences to energize the crowd. The local band practices on the streets of 21

Waconia nearly every morning during the early days of summer, into July. The bands will perform for a crowd that will likely exceed 7,000, lining Main Street for the afternoon. Units will start at the corner of Orange and Main, march west on Main to Walnut. From there they will head south on Walnut where they will finish up at the fairgrounds. Judging will be done in the downtown section of Waconia at the intersection of Main and Vine streets. This area is usually the first to fill with spectators. Most spectators use blankets and folding chairs to â&#x20AC;&#x153;markâ&#x20AC;? their spots the night before to ensure good seating along the parade route. The entire event usually last 2 1/2 to 3 hours. City Square Park is also a good gathering spot and most bands will perform there as well. The festival features only marching bands, with the exception of the Waconia High School Drumline. Go Big Black!

Fair celebrating 100th One hundred years ago the Yellowstone Trail was created for automobile traffic from Massachusetts to Washington, passing through Waconia.

This is one of the grand daddies of Minnesota fairs: The Carver County Fair. This year's fun, scheduled for Aug. 10-14, will mark the 100th anniversary of the fair. The fairgrounds is located on the western side of Waconia, near the water tower, just off Third Street West. There will be plenty of fun activities at the fair. The popular midway, which features several kids' rides and adult rides will be a hot spot. There will also be many buildings on the grounds that house 4-H projects, judging contests, and displays from different organizations and businesses. Those business displays are among some of the favorites at the fair, with many giveaways and drawings for prizes. The 4-H projects are judged first at county fairs all around the state. Winners continue to the Minnesota State Fair for more competition. Carver County area residents are able to experience some of the fine work and efforts of youth first hand at the Carver County Fair. 23

And donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to sample some of the great food. The Carver County Fair has dozens of food vendors set up on the south grounds which offer an assortment of tempting goodies and international foods that can only be found at a fair. In celebration of its 100th birthday, the fair will also be hosting a massive parade through downtown Waconia on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. It will start at City Square Park and finish at the fairgrounds. Some of the most popular attractions at past fairs have been pedal pull competitions for kids, pig and duck races and live music. And it wouldn't be a fair without the dozens of entries in cooking, horticulture and photography. You can find some of the best cookies, some of the largest pumpkins, best sweet corn and stunning photography at fair competitions. Ice fishing a real Blizzard In 2011 the AllDay Blizzard Blitz received plenty of volunteer assistance from students who wanted to donate time for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

If fishing and football are two of your biggest interests, then it’s tough to beat the All Day Blizzard Blitz that will be coming to Lake Waconia this winter for the second year in a row. The event — an ice fishing contest — benefits the Starkey Hearing Foundation along with the All Day Foundation, which is the charitable organization of Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson was on hand last January for the first-ever event; both he and his All Day Foundation are expected to be involved once again in 2012. Last year’s first-ever event — held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January — was a tremendous success. In addition to Peterson, numerous Vikings players were on hand, including— Ben Leber, Jim Kleinsasser and Steve Hutchinson — who participated in the contest. Avid ice fisherman and Vikings fans alike from all over the area came out in large numbers, with more than 1,000 people participating in the contest. The event 25

raised nearly $70,000 — most of it from sponsorships — for the Starkey Foundation, which helps children around the world who need hearing assistance, and the All Day Foundation, which helps children with varying needs. Much of the money raised was targeted for a trip to Uganda to outfit roughly 3,000 children with hearing aids. The 2012 event is set to once again be held on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16. Organizers plan to continue building on last year’s event, which featured prizes, food and DNR activities for kids. Two local cooperating sponsors played a huge role in the success of the event. Lola’s Lakehouse helped host the event at its restaurant, while In Towne Marina was the major player in helping set up, prepare the ice, run the contest and work with vendors. Fireworks light up sky In 1920 Waconia challenged Chaska for the county seat, but a county-wide vote, 2,372 to 1,989, kept the courthouse in Chaska.

Waconia features one of the most brilliant fireworks shows on the Fourth of July, and the credit for that can go in large part to the Waconia Chamber of Commerce and its volunteers who actually make it happen. An estimated 10,000-15,000 people will come to Waconia from several neighboring communities and counties. They will line the shores of Lake Waconia as fireworks are fired off in dramatic fashion over the lake from Coney Island. Viewed by boat or shore, the display is the grand finale to a day of celebration. Waconia has a long tradition of providing a fireworks show on the Fourth of July, making it one of the few communities in the metro that does so over a lake. The fireworks are free to watch for the public, but the Waconia Chamber of Commerce does the fund-raising throughout the year to make it all possible. It raises money by sponsoring Nickle Dickle Day in September, and through generous 29

donations from businesses, service groups and private individuals within the Waconia area. Because the fireworks are dependent on contributions every year in order to be possible, the chamber gladly accepts any amount that area residents would like to offer to help in the effort. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to make a donation to the chamber for this event, call 952-442-5812. The chamber office is located at 209 South Vine, in the City Hall Building. A core group of people from the community have taken pyro-technical classes in shooting off the fireworks. Many of them have been making the fireworks show possible for years. They are not paid for their services, but they give up their own holiday to make the day special for the people of the area. Fireworks will be shot off from Coney Island, providing great visibility from the regional park to downtown. Boaters can also watch from the lake. The show kicks off at dusk.

Nature at your doorstep In 1855 the Minnesota Legislature organized Carver County with a population of 352. Waconia was founded two years later.

Nature’s beauty is on full display at Carver Park Reserve. If you enjoy meandering walkways that take you through wooded forests, open prairie, along the shores of small lakes and over rolling hills, Carver Park Reserve will offer you this and more. Located just six miles east of Waconia on County Road 11 the massive 3,500 acre nature reserve also offers bike paths (gravel and paved), picnic areas, restroom facilities and more. At the heart of Carver Park Reserve is Lowry Nature Center, which yearly attracts groups of adults and school children as well as families for weekday and weekend programs. Programs focus on the park reserve’s abundant natural resources and range from fall migration waterfowl watches at Fred E. King Waterfowl Sanctuary with its viewing blind, to the springtime ritual of maple syrup making, to star gazing in the summer. The park’s deer population roams freely and may be viewed from the nature center. 33

Many park users have also noted that deer can often be seen slipping through a thicket of trees or standing motionless as bikers and walkers stroll through the reserve.

Regional park with beach Coney Island Hotel opened on the island in 1866. It was a popular destination for vacationers from Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Lake Waconia Regional Park offers 105 acres of terrain that presents a refined, yet rustic feel alongside beautiful Lake Waconia. It is located just east of Waconia on Paradise Lane, next to the Lake Waconia Event Center.. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for a place to have a family reunion, graduation party or company picnic this might be the perfect location. The picnic shelter, located on the south side of the park, on a hill overlooking the lake, is available for rental throughout the summer and is located close to the playground, restrooms, beach and open park area. The shelter is near a sand volleyball court, grills, electrical outlets, and water faucet along with seating for up to 80 people. Still more picnic tables can be utilized outside of the shelter. Annual parking permits are available that allow patrons access to this park and the other 35

regional parks in the county, including Minnewashta and Baylor. If you live in Waconia and plan to walk to the park, you can gain access without any entrance fee to the park. Old Beach Lane, on the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s west side, makes a direct connection with the city off Main Street South. The park offers the only public swimming beach on the lake and lifeguards are on duty during specified hours in the summer. See park posting for specific times. In the winter, the park is transformed to a wonderland, especially the large sledding hill on the south side of the property. Known as Mt. Waconia, At 80-feet in height, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest hill in Waconia. The park area is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. or sunset, whichever is later. Library a true resource A severe tornado and thunderstorm ripped through Waconia in 1904. Four area residents were killed as a result of the devastation.

The Waconia Library exists today because of the efforts and organization of civic-minded women who cooperated with churches, schools and other civic groups in the 1930s. These words are found in the typed announcement for “The Day of a Book,” an event held on Jan. 26, 1935: “…the outstanding characteristic of Waconia is its own completeness. We do things for ourselves and require little aid from outside sources. And so continuing this tradition, we are going to build a library book by book from your house and mine.” With a collection of over 40,000 books, the Waconia Library is providing the community with access to valuable resources. The Waconia Public Library, located at 217 Vine St., is a part of the Carver County library system, which was established in 1975. The Waconia Library itself began serving the community in 1935. Since then, it has continued to 36

be a growing asset to the community, as well as a dynamic resource that is responsive to the progress of technology. The library is keeping up with the online revolution in many ways. eAudiobooks are now available for patrons to download through www.netlibrary.org. These audio books can be checked out online and downloaded to a personal computer and then be transferred to a portable device. Some of the portable devices include the iPhone, iPod Classic, iPod Mini, iPod Nano, and the iTouch. The library also offers computer and software classes, summer reading programs, author talks, book clubs, book sales and story times. Triathletes converge on city Louise Butke was Waconia’s first female mayor from 1936-38. She chose not to seek a second term, but almost won by write-in votes.

If you have a love of swimming, running and biking, you may want to participate in the Lake Waconia Triathlon, held Sunday, June 26 in Waconia. You’ll see more swimmers, bikers and runners in one area of Waconia than ever before. The local terrain will again challenge hundreds of athletes in the 22nd year of the event. This year’s will again be one of the biggest ever with more than 500 participants. This annual event combines running, biking and swimming to test those who compete. It is one of the longest running triathlons in the state. Each participant competes at their own speed. Race officials have said the idea is to have “fun” while striving to reach the finish. The swimming portion is approximately 1/2 mile in distance. Competitors leave the county beach site and swim to a buoy that is located 1/4 mile out. They swim around the buoy and back 37

to shore. From there, swimmers make a quick transition to their bikes which are located in a huge pen near the beach. Bikers head through downtown Waconia on Old Beach Ln., heading west to Highway 25. For a detailed route of the bike portion, go to www.lakewaconiatriathlon.net. The athletes bike a total of 20 miles. Many spectators have said the bike portion is their favorite, simply because many of the bikes are so high-tech. Finally, the athletes are off on a four-mile run which takes them again through the streets of Waconia and back to the beach. The event is organized by Lake Waconia Triathlon, Inc, a non-profit group under the direction of Tom and Jean Konrardy and Marv and Shelly Denzer. Proceeds benefit area organizations and events, such as the fireworks show and Lake Waconia Association.

Community ed. a resource Waconia nearly landed the 2010 Governor’s Fishing Opener, but was edged by Grand Rapids. In 2009 it was held in White Bear Lake.

If it’s learning and fun you seek, look no further than community education. It continues to promote the journey of lifelong learning through summer offerings in adult enrichment classes, adult trips and tours, youth enrichment classes, youth recreation, and youth trips. With an estimated 18,000 participants using community education every year, it’s clear that everyone from age 0 to 100 can find something of interest. These kinds of events have been cultivating a community of lifelong health and education in Waconia and neighboring communities since 1979. Adult enrichment classes include courses in developing personal rhythm or pet control, as well as CPR and defensive driving, allowing the older community to delve into something they may not usually have time for. Youth enrichment classes range from courses in karate to summer camps geared toward 39

speaking Spanish or creating music. Other opportunities for the community’s youth include Homeward Bound Theatre Company and babysitter’s training. The youth recreation opportunities give the younger community a number of sports camps to attend. Some of the sports offered this summer include basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, cheerleading, softball, tennis, golf, rugby, baseball, lacrosse, and even a youth triathlon. More than 2,000 kids have participated in these sports camps. Courses in early childhood family are also available, designed for families with children between the ages of 0 and 5. The nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backbone In 1918 there were 19 creameries in Carver County that were producing 8,000 pounds of butter per day or 2.9 million pounds for the year.

Although urban growth continues throughout Carver County, agriculture remains an active member of the local economy. And there is a good reason for that. The county historically ranks 10th in the state with the number of dairy cows, 13,000, and is also 10th in dairy production. There are more than 190 dairy farms in the county. And among those dairy farms are some of the most productive in the entire state. With its rolling hills and lush, green grass, early settlers quickly discovered cows thrived on land such as this. There may not be a higher concentration of dairy farms anywhere in the world. Just as the crops from area farms have helped feed the world, so too have the dairy products that come from this area. Just to the south of Waconia is the home of Bongardsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Creameries, known throughout the state for high quality dairy products. Dairy farm or crop farm, Minnesota is looking 47

to recognize family farms through out the state. Families who have owned their farms for 100 years or more are encouraged to apply for the Minnesota State Fair's 2011 Century Farm program. The Century Farm program recognizes family farms according to three qualifications. The farm must be: 1) at least 100 years old according to authentic land records; 2) in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years (continuous residence on the farm is not required); and 3) at least 50 acres in size. A commemorative certificate signed by the president of the State Fair, the president of the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation and the Governor will be awarded to qualifying families, along with an outdoor sign signifying Century Farm recognition. Information on all Century Farm families will be available at the Minnesota Farm Bureau exhibit during the 2011 Minnesota State Fair. A golf course to satisfy Island View Golf Course near Waconia opened to the public as a nine-hole course in 1960. It expanded to 18 holes in 1974.

Built in 1959, Island View Golf Club is an 18hole semi-private course that covers 145 acres just east of Waconia. The 6,552-yard, par-72 course is situated on County Road 30, just off the shores of Lake Waconia. Its fairways are lined with mature trees, while it’s rolling hills and manicured greens offer a scenic round of challenging golf from start to finish. The course, which opened to the public as a nine-hole course in July of 1960, expanded to 18 holes in 1974. The clubhouse, which has undergone several renovations over the years, expanded to its current size in 1983, and now offers a pro shop — which is stocked with the latest equipment and apparel — as well as men’s and women’s locker facilities, casual dining, banquet and reception areas and a bar and lounge area. The course is open to the public for both golfing and dining. Island View Golf Club also offers a full length driving range, as well as chipping and putting 53

practice areas. The club is a semi-private course with both full and associate memberships available. Island View hosts several men’s and women’s leagues, and also offers a junior golf program for kids in fifth through 11th grades. Non-Members may make tee times up to three days in advance by calling the pro shop at 952442-6116, Extension 2. More information about the course can be found at www.islandviewgolfclub.com. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy several other courses near Waconia, including Timber Creek Golf Course, which is located five miles west of Mound on County Road 15, near Watertown, and Deer Run Golf Course, which is located on County Road 11 just outside Victoria. Both courses are 18 holes and offer a clubhouse, carts and a driving range. River’s Edge Golf Course is a nine-hole course located near Watertown on County Road 27.

Beauty at the Arboretum A ring of chicken thieves working in Carver County was arrested in 1935. That was welcome news to farmers who were wondering where the chickens were going.

One of the world’s greatest research centers, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, is located just down the road. It is situated just nine miles east of Waconia on Highway 5. It features more than 1,000 acres of magnificent gardens, model landscapes, and natural areas-from woodlands and wetlands to prairie-with extensive collections of northern-hardy plants. Tour the Arboretum on 12.5 miles of garden paths and hiking trails. Walk the close gardens and bike, walk or drive Three-Mile Drive to see more gardens and collections. The mission is to provide a community and national resource for horticultural and environmental information, research and public education; to develop and evaluate plants and horticultural practices for cold climates; and to inspire and delight all visitors with quality plants in welldesigned and maintained displays, collections, 57

model landscapes, and conservation areas. A 45,000 square-foot Visitor Center serves as the formal entry point to the Arboretum’s 1,040 acres of display gardens, extensive northernhardy plant collections, and diverse natural landscapes. The Visitor Center enhances service to members and guests through its McQuinn Great Hall, which creates an exceptional space for exhibits and receptions, as well as a restaurant, gift store, and display gallery. Other key features include: •A 375-seat auditorium and two classrooms with a teaching garden that offer expanded meeting space for classes, seminars, and conferences; •An enclosed skyway that links the Visitor Center to the Snyder Building, allowing the two buildings to function together. •The Snyder Building is still home to the Andersen Horticultural Library. •Miles of walking trails.

Tracking our local heritage The first church in Waconia was St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church which was organized in 1857 by Rev. Father Bruno Riss.

Tracing a family’s history can be a time consuming, but fascinating past time. The facts and stories are an invaluable treasure to pass on to future generations. To consider preserving the history of an entire city might seem an insurmountable task. But, that is the mission the Waconia Heritage Association (WHA) has set out to complete. The group has already published Waconia: Paradise of the Northwest The Lake and its Island, released in 1986. Now, the WHA is working on a second book with a working title - Waconia: Paradise of the Northwest, The Town and its People. The first book focused on Lake Waconia and Coney Island. The second book will focus on the town of Waconia and its people. Both books cover the first 150 years of Waconia’s history from 1857 to 2007. Community members are writing most of the essays in the second book and the association sorts, edits and verifies facts within the essays 59

with the help of the Carver County Historical Society. The City of Waconia has donated office space to the group in city hall and will store all submitted essays in the full format of their submission. With no firm deadline for publication of the second book the group has been encouraged by its oldest member Will Yetzer, who in his mid 90s, has informed the board that he would like to see a published copy of the second book. The WHA has also put together a historic walking tour of the city of Waconia. The brochure is available at city hall and features 22 historic stops within 1.7 mile walk in downtown Waconia. Since its inception in 1983, the Waconia Heritage Association’s purpose was to “discover and memorialize the heritage and history of the area.” The Waconia Heritage Association can be reached by calling Nancy Anderson at 952-9553493.

Music by the Lake a treat O.D. Sell of Mayer created the County Historical Society in 1940. It was located in Mayer until the mid1940s when it moved to Waconia.

Elite musical performances and world premiers are the stuff of Hollywood and New York, but thanks to a group of music lovers in Waconia, it is also the stuff of Music By The Lake at Faith Lutheran Church. From the humble beginnings of single performance by a local, classical pianist, in January of 2005, the idea that concerts like this should happen, on a regular basis, in Waconia came to fruition. Soon a board of directors including: Liz Hegle, Doug Scholla, Rolly Leuzinger Ross Hanson, Keith Sjodin and Charley Streiff came together to seek out elite musicians to perform for Music By The Lake. Music By The Lake has become an annual concert series that includes three performances and it only contracts the finest musicians. Diversity is important to the series; it features various genre from classical and choral to blue65

grass and big band. One prerequisite all the groups must have is the ability to relate to the audience. Music By The Lake has even hosted a world premier of a piece of music by the choral group Cantus. The piece, which is based on a letter from Pfc. Jesse A. Givens of Springfield, Mo., who served in Iraq, features a letter to his wife, stepson and unborn child. It was to be read only in the event of his death. Pfc. Givens was killed May 1, 2003. Pfc. Givensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; widow Melissa was present at the premier in Waconia on April 6, 2008. Reaching higher at Crown The Paradise Nite Club in Waconia burned down in 1971. It was later rebuilt and was more recently known as the Lakeside Ballroom.

For over 90 years Crown College has been a part of Minnesota’s culture of higher education and, since 1970, has been a part of the Waconia community. This private college of 1,500 local and international students is located on County Road 92 on 215 acres of property and offers a number of degrees for both traditional and nontraditional students. Unlike most institutions of higher education, Crown’s campus is compromised of only one building that accommodates classes, administration, faculty and staff, sporting events and other school functions. This single building was formerly a Jesuit monastery surrounded by other buildings that serve as residence halls. The on-campus housing at Crown accommodates a variety of students, including those with families. The academic program for nontraditional students, formerly known as the Crown Adult 67

Program (CAP), is now the Adult and Graduate Studies program (AGS). AGS offers associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees for adults who have already taken on the responsibilities of a full-time job, family, or both. Historical Society nearby To help commemorate the nation's bicentennial in 1976, the Waconia Bicentennial Commission was organized. It organized local events.

History has always been important to the people of this community. Life in Carver County is a magnificent journey. Since its formation in 1940, the Carver County Historical Society has been dedicated to sharing and preserving knowledge of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and exhibiting this magnificent journey. Located at the corner of Cherry and First Street, the museum is most recognizable by its architecture, a two-story building with a siloshaped glass entry, symbolic of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich agricultural heritage. There is also a retired World War II tank on the west side of the front lawn. This tank is indicative of one of the collections housed by the society, a massive military display of artifacts collected by local military historian and collector Dan Steinhagen. The Carver County Historical Society features five local history galleries and a gallery honoring veterans. The local history galleries are primarily thematic and tell the story of our county's her69

itage. The objects on display are used to help tell these stories. Exhibits or parts of exhibits change regularly. Scavenger hunts are available for children of all ages who are visiting the museum. Galleries for you to view: Choosing Carver County This gallery highlights the history of immigration to Carver County. Toolin' Around Carver County Hammers, axes, planes and other tools are the focus of this exhibit. Snapshots of Carver County History This gallery examines various aspects of Carver County's past including natural history, agriculture and industry and recreation.
