What’s new at Whiz Bang Days this year? Softball returns, runners and walkers flock to Lakeview Terrace, and Fairchild is the parade’s grand marshal BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS Robbinsdale residents have celebrated Whiz Bang Days for decades, but festival organizers are still finding new wrinkles to add to the Birdtown tradition, scheduled July 7-10 this year. Treasurer Candy Norton said the biggest difference this year is a wooden bat softball tournament scheduled Sunday at Spanjers Park, located behind Robbinsdale City Hall. The Robbinsdale Fire Department displayed one of its massive fire engines during the 2015 Whiz “We’ve talked about reBang Days parade. This year’s celebration is July 7-10. (Sun Post staff photo by Joe Bowen) incorporating softball for

years, said Whiz Bang President Andy Holtz. The festival used to have a softball tournament, but renovations to the fields at Lakeview Terrace Park a few years ago made it impractical. Also new this year is a large Saturday beer and brat party at Wicked Wort, a brewery that opened on West Broadway in January, and the “Tour de Vail, an annual fundraising walk and run for Vail Place, an agency that helps adults with mental illnesses assimilate back into society. Holtz and Norton said

they anticipate that the tour will bring more people to downtown Robbinsdale, and a large portion of the festival’s events are scheduled on West Broadway or in Lakeview Terrace Park. “We’re just trying to get a couple ... locations where there’s events where people can stick around and walk to them all day long, Holtz said. Norton said Whiz Bang organizers have also tripled the number of food trucks this year, and the tour - which also takes 2016 - TO NEXT PAGE

The Lodge pulls out all the stops Karaoke contest, beer bust among Whiz Bang offerings at West Broadway bar and grill BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS

Beers and brats at Robbinsdale’s newest - and only - brewery Wicked Wort to host party Saturday BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS One of the newest members of Robbinsdale’s emerging “foodie” scene is set to host a party during the city’s long-standing summertime festival. Wicked Wort, a brewery that opened last January on West Broadway, will host a beer and brat party at noon on Saturday, July 9, under a tent in the brewery’s parking lot. There, staff will serve some of the brewery’s “retired” beers for $4. “They’re beers that people loved, so we saved them specifically for Whiz Bang,” said Manager Amanda Carlyle. The brewery proper will serve its standard 10 beers. At 1 p.m., the first of three bands is scheduled to perform. Just the Two of Us is, as the name suggests, a duo that plays a variety of music. After them will be Matthew Inkala

& The Hostages, and after that will be Big Night Out, who are scheduled to hit the stage around 8 p.m. and leave whenever the last few attendees start to head home around 1 a.m., Carlyle said. “It’s going to be a crazy night,” she said with a laugh. A “beer and brat” party, however, would not be complete without the bratwursts, and Wicked Wort’s event will include specials from Hackenmueller’s Meat Market, which is Robbinsdale’s oldest continually-running business. More food will be provided by Momma Donato’s pizza and Golden Valley’s Valley Pastries. The brewery proper will include its regular fare, like small pizzas and free popcorn, Carlyle added. Carlyle said brewery staff got the idea to host a party during WORT - TO PAGE 8

Staff at the Lodge in Robbinsdale have planned a series of parties and other fun events for this year’s Whiz Bang Days. “We do it for the community involvement and to keep the festival going,” said owner Kathy McMenoman. On Thursday, staff will host the finals of an ongoing karaoke contest that will be judged by members of Pop Rocks, the main act during the next day’s block party. The karaoke contest winner will be able to perform with the band the following night. On Friday, staff there have planned a block party that will take place in the parking lot behind the bar. The party is for all ages and will include kids’ games and the musical stylings of Pop Rocks, which bills itself as “a high energy live music show that plays the biggest dance party hits made to fill the floor.”

While Whiz Bangers rock out in the parking lot, others can attend a dance party inside the bar from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and enjoy the music of 2 Force Funk, a DJ duo from Robbinsdale. There is a $5 cover charge for the block party. Attending the dance party is free, however. On Saturday, The Lodge will have bingo for people 18 years and older, and will host a Robbinsdale baseball beer bust 5-8 p.m. while showing an ultimate fighting card that features Minnesota wrestling legend Brock Lesnar. “Brock is back!” McMenoman joked. On Sunday, staff from the business will have a float in the traditional parade down West Broadway that will include a variety of hit music played by The MTVs. Whiz Bang Ambassadors: representing Robbinsdale throughout the region BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS Whiz Bang Ambassadors represent Robbinsdale throughout the region as they head to festivals, community events and outreach efforts in their trademark sashes and tiaras. They are regulars at Birdtown traditions like the annual Christmas Tree lighting celebration outside city hall, and this year’s Miss Robbinsdale, Lois Cassell, will participate in the Minneapolis Aquatennial. Each ambassador will receive a scholarship that helps cover educa-

tional materials, tuition and more at the conclusion of their reign. Amounts vary based on donations the program receives and the age of the ambassador. Some scholarships have been as high as $1,500. The ambassador program itself is divided into two segments: “ambassadors and “junior ambassadors. Ambassadors must be 15 to 22-years old, legal residents of the United States, unmarried, not represented another city in a similar capacity within the past six years and live within the borders of Robbinsdale

Area Schools or have a parent or guardian who works or volunteers for a business in the school district. Ambassadors are judged on their communications skills, personality, manners, patients, maturity, poise, dependability, punctuality, community involvement and volunteering, a written application and more. Junior ambassadors must be entering Kindergarten, first- or secondgrade for the upcoming school year, a legal permanent resident, never have represented a city in a similar capacity and meet other criteria.

The program is open to applicants of any gender, as well. Candidates are paired with a Robbinsdale business who offers to sponsor the candidate. Kurtz herself was a Jr. Queen for Robbindale in 1777-1978. She has two sons who served as ambassadors in 2009-2010 and 2012-2013. A bawdy history behind a Robbinsdale tradition BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS

Dave Luth watches the bocce ball come out of his hand during the Whiz Bang Days tournament at Nonna Rosa during last year’s festival. (Sun Post intern photo by Brian Mozey)

Almost all the events at Whiz Bang Days are family friendly, but the story behind the festival’s peculiar name is anything but that. “Whiz Bang Days was inspired by Capt. Billy’s Whiz Bang, a turn-of-the-century magazine whose name is an onomatopoetic take on the sound World War I mortar rounds made while flying towards their target (“whizzzzzz!) and once they strike the ground (“bang!). The magazine was a product of Fawcett Pub-

lications - which was based in Robbinsdale and billed itself as “an explosion of pedigreed bunk. Each issue was chock full of bawdy poems, innuendo-laden drawings and racy jokes. A classic: Capt. Billy’s Whiz Bang jokingly described an “AWOL soldier as “after women or liquor instead of the more serious and typical “absent without leave. “Captain Billy was the nickname given to Wilford Hamilton Fawcett, the founder of Fawcett Publications, a veteran of the SpanishAmerican war and, later, a police reporter for the

Minneapolis Journal. Fawcett distributed his magazine for free to soldiers, and the general public could grab it from any number of Twin Cities locations. Fawcett’s owners intended for their lighthearted magazine to lift the moods of trenchfighting World War I soldiers, who were often all too familiar with the “whiz and “bang of incoming mortar fire. Editions were routinely dedicated to American and Canadian fighting forces, and the magazine gained some national profile in the ‘20s. The Captain himself would write about vaca-

tions he took across the country and made sure to let readers know about his celebrity friends, who included boxing legend Jack Dempsey. He is also responsible for the creation of the Breezy Point Resort in Greater Minnesota, and his personal log mansion from the same time period is festooned with animal hides and boasts 10 bedrooms, a bar and a massive rock fireplace. Fawcett’s publishing house also produced comic books, a series of how-to books, and Mechanix Illustrated, a home improvement magazine that continued on as Home Mechanix

and later Today’s Homeowner. Capt. Billy’s Whiz Bang was published for years after the war that inspired its publisher and its moniker had ended. In the ‘40s, as Robbinsdale searched for a name for its nascent summer festival, and World War II called soldiers to war once again, the “Whiz Bang moniker was suggested and stuck. Nearly 70 years later, that decision has allowed Captain Billy and his rowdy magazine to live on, if only for a few days each summer. Contact Joe Bowen at joe.bowen@ecm-inc.com
