The Cayman Island’s Government has unveiled a five-phase reopening plan for Cayman’s borders which will allow for less restricted movement in and out of the Island to select locations on chartered repatriation and some commercial flights. While transition through the phases remains dependent on the local and international COVID-19 climate, the plan put forward target dates for a return of tourism and general easing of restrictions. Despite the projected border reopening schedule, it remains unclear when the Government will open the borders to commercial travel. Similarly, countries around the world are all responding to the pandemic with their own travel and border restrictions and may restrict travel, both inbound and/or outbound, without any advance notice. Repatriation flights are regularly announced by the CI Government. Cayman Airways, our national carrier, has also confirmed flights to Miami, Jamaica and Honduras for repatriation purposes. British Airways also provides airbridge flights to and from Cayman and the UK. The hope is that eventually the destinations that were once easily accessible from Cayman’s Owen Robert’s International Airport, such as Cuba and New York, will once again become part of the Island’s flight schedule.
However, until then, locals and residents have been taking advantage of the incredible holiday destination right on their doorsteps.
