2011 Annual Report

Dear Friends, We hear the stories each day. As countless mothers and fathers wake, they’re not asking themselves what they should wear today, how heavy their workload will be at the office or plant, or if there is time to get the car’s oil changed. For them, the burning question of the moment is “How will I feed my family today?” It’s a hard fact that more than one in seven Ohio households are facing a risk of hunger or are food insecure – an increase of 71,000 households over the prior year. Hunger is widespread, which requires our response to be equally widespread. And in 2011, as in years past, it was. Our goal was nothing short of creating a better, more inclusive community, a place where those facing hunger, the young and old, families and individuals, could find relief; a place where those who stand beside us, donors and volunteers alike, can do their good work. A place for everyone. But securing a place for everyone means keeping our strong network in place. Together, in 2011, we did just that by increasing distribution to 19.4 million pounds and providing 14.9 million meals to families in need—made possible in part by a remarkable growth in local donations and an overwhelming amount of financial support that positioned the Foodbank to distribute more food than ever before. In addition, we created innovative ways, like our Feeding Kids Initiative, to help meet our community’s emergency food needs. Also, we rolled out new tools to engage and educate the public like our award-winning Hungry Kate animated video. By all measures, 2011 was a successful year. Looking ahead, 2012 is off to a great start as we were recently named the 2012 “Food Bank of the Year” by Feeding America. Of course, our true success is always the fact that throughout our eight-county region we provide a place for everyone to find hope; people who might otherwise have felt they had no place to go. Being that place, that open door at the pantry, that place at the shelter’s table: That’s what we’re here for, to Feed People and Fight Hunger. That’s true success. Sincerely,

But who is everyone? Hunger does not affect just the unemployed poor but also the working poor: your neighbor, your brother, your co-worker. In fact, many of the people our programs served in 2011 were seeking emergency food assistance for the first time, bringing many new faces into food lines: people knocked back by a sudden layoff; people struggling with fixed incomes; mothers agonizing over which bills to pay; kids possibly going to bed with no dinner. We stepped up our efforts to make sure there was a place for all of them, a place for comfort, food and above all, hope. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re proud to have been a bright spot in their storiesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;stories that a few of them have offered to share in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report.

A place for LUCAS “When we get home, can I have peanut butter?” This is what 4-year-old Lucas asked his mom after visiting a food pantry in Akron for the first time. Lucas was happy his mom was taking a day off work and spending it with him. But their time together would not be fun and games; instead, they would spend the day waiting for food to share with Lucas’s three brothers. This extra nourishment will help Lucas and his brothers grow, develop and learn just like their peers.

Feeding Kids Initiative Giving Ohio’s kids a nutrition boost When you hear the words “power packs” you might think of superheroes or space-age gadgets that help people fly. In 2011, however, for hundreds of Northeast Ohio children, “power packs” meant something much more basic and low tech; it meant food. With more than 25 percent of Ohio’s children experiencing food insecurity, the Foodbank team went into action to create and launch a response that addressed this critical need. The result was our Feeding Kids Initiative. The goal of the initiative, to alleviate childhood hunger by providing children with regular access to safe and nutritious food, meant expanding the Foodbank’s menu options for children and piloting a new product line: Kids Power Packs. Partnerships with donors enabled the Foodbank to provide critical resources necessary to launch the Kids Power Pack program. The packs contained a variety of kid-friendly items like cereal or canned fruit that follow the nutritional guidelines of the USDA and were sent home with children, primarily through schools, to ensure they had access to nutritious food over the weekend. More menu options means a place for everyone, kids included.

A place for Karla & Anthony Hunger doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just break down physical strength, it breaks down families. Karla and Anthony, unable to make rent, were evicted and staying at homeless shelters. Each day, they brought their kids to Refuge of Hope in Canton for a warm meal. Through access to regular food and help from the shelter, this family felt a sense of certainty during a time of much uncertainty.

To be able to report that in 2011 the Foodbank increased distribution to 19.4 million pounds and provided 14.9 million meals to families in need is a great story. But within that story, and behind those outstanding numbers, are two very important chapters: a big rise in local donor activity and an increase in direct distribution.

Local Food Donors Taking care of our own In 2011, facing a decrease in donations from national food donors, we redoubled our focus on growing local donor participation and giving. Local donors, our longtime single greatest source of supply, responded in the community with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;not on my watchâ&#x20AC;? attitude. Through a ramped-up food cultivation strategy that focused on the retail market and a donor recognition program, local product donations ended 2011 over the prior year at 6.2 million pounds. This includes 763,000 incremental pounds that were procured locally due to a 30 percent growth in local donors in the past two years. These numbers boldly exemplify the spirit of concern and caring that defines Northeast Ohio and enables us to create a place for everyone.

A place for Kathy “I don’t know what I would do if I had a full refrigerator,” said Kathy. As it is for many Ohioans, walking into the kitchen to a full refrigerator seems like a distant memory. Instead of going to her own kitchen for food, circumstances forced her to a direct food distribution at Total Living Center in Canton for assistance. When Kathy was struggling, the Foodbank was there with a helping hand.

Direct Distributions Record-Breaking Results While we are constantly seeking innovative ways to address hunger and food insecurity, we recognize that the foundation of our work is to efficiently and effectively distribute food to our most vulnerable neighbors. In 2011, our direct distribution activity reached new heights as more people sought emergency assistance. At direct distribution sites throughout our region, the Foodbank delivers a truckload of emergency food at least once a month where clients have gathered. Turnout continues to grow as families straining to make ends meet take their place in line for hunger relief. In 2011 we met that growth head-on with the addition of two new sites. As a result, a total of 41,425 clients were served at seven different direct distribution locations in the Foodbank’s eight-county service area. This work, funded by local foundations and our annual Harvest for Hunger campaign contributions, resulted in 1.3 million pounds going straight from the Foodbank into the hands of clients. In one instance, nearly 30,500 pounds of apples, cabbage, broccoli, onions, cottage cheese and other items were handed out in a single day, reaching more than 2,100 clients. This record-breaking direct distribution level was the cornerstone of the growth in Medina County and has proven to impact targeted areas in Portage and Wayne counties. Further, it’s a cornerstone of our work to build a place for everyone. 11

A place for Hungry Kate Kate is an ordinary girl who goes to an ordinary school and is part of an ordinary family. As in many other families, Kate’s dad lost his job, so they now struggle to simply put food on the table. During troubled times, the Foodbank and its agencies were there to support Kate’s family in meeting their most basic need of food. Meet Kate at HungryKate.org.

Hungry Kate A video star is born Many Ohioans simply do not realize that hunger affects people in our own community. The Foodbank expanded efforts to raise awareness of this important issue and rolled out a new campaign, called Hungry Kate. Kate is the adorable animated child star of last year’s Hungry Kate video. The reality is you may very well know someone like her. Because while Kate is a fictional character, she represents a very real problem: childhood hunger. Kate is like any one of 95,000 Akron-Canton area kids who face hunger daily. Her voice speaks for these children who have little opportunity of their own to speak out about the persistent hunger they face. Overall, this multi-channel campaign gently, but with great impact, put the plight of struggling families like Kate’s in the spotlight and championed the importance of the work the Foodbank does every day to ensure there’s a place for everyone. A place for Mary In addition to food, a warm heart and a vibrant smile are what Mary offers the many vulnerable individuals who come seeking assistance from the pantry at Arlington Memorial Baptist Church in Akron. Mary has volunteered at the pantry for six years and managed the program the last four years. Mary shared that her time at the pantry has been very gratifying, saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Knowing that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m helping someone means so much, when it could easily be me on the other side needing a hand.â&#x20AC;?

Volunteers Our theme this year, a place for everyone, speaks to a much wider audience than those who receive food assistance; it also speaks to our countless generous donors and the many volunteers who tirelessly donate their time and positive energy to keep our network strong. Their service empowers the Foodbank and enables our agencies to be a safety net for so many hungry northeast Ohioans. In 2011, a record-breaking 3,470 volunteers donated more than 30,000 hours of service while supporting our mission to Feed People and Fight Hunger. The number of volunteers who came through our doors more than doubled the number who served in 2010. The help volunteers supply is real, tangible and relied on by more than 57,000 different people who benefit daily from the food we provide.
