MORE THAN A MEAL 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear friends, The work of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank remains critical to the lives of people who are struggling with food insecurity. More than 234,000 people in our region experience hunger each year, and many of them do not qualify for public assistance, and have nowhere to turn, but the food pantries, hot meal sites and shelters you support through the Foodbank. One of the things that has made the Foodbank successful in meeting community needs over the years is the collaborative culture that is at the heart of all we do. This is an organization that was simply founded on the belief that we can do more when we work together. In 2015, after months of focus groups and planning sessions, we adopted a new strategic plan, Foodbank 2020. The central goal of this plan is to, for the first time, commit to providing enough meals to meet the needs of everyone in our region struggling with hunger. We hope you’ll take a minute to revisit the past year with us in this annual report and read more about our strategic plan at Foodbank2020.org. I want to close by telling you how grateful we are for your support, and how valued you are. The Foodbank is an institution of compassion for the hungry, sick, and struggling—fueled by you, your time and your financial support.

A NEW PLAN Foodbank 2020, the Foodbank’s multi-tiered strategic plan, aims to provide access to enough food for everyone struggling with hunger in its 8-county service area. Guided by a new vision and mission, this plan will foster deeper collaboration and create meaningful, lasting impact. Foodbank
2020 is a result of a
community working to empower real change for families and neighbors in need. For more information, we invite you to visit Foodbank2020.org.
MEET ESTELLA Estella spent her life living comfortably, working and raising her children and her grandchildren. After retirement and with her husband’s passing, Estella found herself living on fixed income, taking care of her growing grandchildren. “My husband passed away a year ago,” said Estella. “But I’m not alone; I’ve had my grandkids since they were little. My granddaughter is now in college getting her degree and my grandson is about to graduate high school.” Estella has visited a hunger-relief program of the Foodbank a few times. When describing what the fresh food means to her family, she smiles broadly in appreciation.
“I love the food, but even more, I love the people,” Estella said. “They make you feel so good!” MANY HANDS One in seven individuals in our area will face food insecurity this year. Here at the Foodbank, we are helping to improve the lives of those in our community facing hunger, but we can’t do it alone. In 2015, the Foodbank hosted 9,000
volunteers who donated more than 53,000 hours to hunger-relief efforts in our community! That’s the equivalent of 25 full-time employees!
OUR MISSION The mission of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is to lead a collaborative network that empowers people to experience healthy and hunger-free lives. We distribute food to feed people and we advocate, engage and convene our community in the fight to end hunger.
OUR VISION The vision of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is a thriving community free of hunger.
HEALTHY FOOD The Foodbank believes in the importance of
nutrition and that sharing and distributing healthy foods
knowledge about
is a key factor in reducing hunger. The Foodbank collaborates with its partner hunger-relief programs by providing nutrition
education opportunities
like cooking demonstrations utilizing healthy foods that we distribute, and by providing resources like brochures and recipe cards highlighting nutritional benefits. Because of this emphasis, in 2015, your Foodbank distributed 7.7 million pounds of nourishing, fresh produce!
THANK YOU
for supporting the important work of the Foodbank, for believing in its cause and for helping to provide more than a meal to our neighbors in need.
