IIC PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS WINTER 2013

ADULT CLASSES IN WRITING, DANCE/FITNESS, VISUAL ARTS Beginnings, Middles and Ends Writing Workshop Class 1: Monday mornings, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon (Theater at ACS, second floor rehearsal room) Class 2: Monday evenings, 6:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m. (Theater at ACS, atrium) Instructor: Amalia Melis Dates: Jan. 28; Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25 Cost: 120 euros (13.5-hour program) Minimum enrollment: 6 (in each class) Maximum enrollment: 12 (in each class)

Using writing prompts/photos/poems/ stories we will find new ways of taking apart the short story structure to rebuild it in our own way; lear n about captivating beginnings ( opening scene, second scene, revising), solid middles that keeps stories flowing (staying on track, develop character, POV, setting), satisfying ends (delivering the promise, last paragraph, scene, sentence). We will also analyze published short stories in class. For those who want to strengthen their fiction writing skills. Amalia Melis has over 25 years experience as a hard news/ feature writer, corporate communications & speech writer, editor, ghostwriter, press person (U.S. & Greece). Published work has appeared in : Ms. Magazine, Elle Magazine, The Melbourne Age Newspaper, Leaders Magazine, Hunterdon County Democrat Newspaper, National Public Television ( N.Y.), Palm B e a ch Po s t N e w s p a p e r, T h e A RT Magazine, VIMA & Eleftherotypia ( Greek Newspapers), among others. She has published interviews with two Pulitzer Prize winning authors Michael Cunningham and Frank McCourt. She is creator and organizer of the Aegean Arts Circle Writing Workshops in Andros.

When avoiding the blank page, she makes assemblage sculptures out of found objects. She participated in “Creativity in a Time of Chaos” group art exhibit in Athens, Greece (Nov.-Dec. 2012) and in “Two Sides” S.W.A.N. group art exhibit, Berlin, Expressing the Essence: Germany(2010). Zumba Dance and Fitness Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. (Theater at ACS, second floor rehearsal room). Instructor: Nicolette Frangou Dates: Participants must enroll for a minimum of 6 classes this six-week registration period (Jan. 21 - March 1 ) Cost: 6 classes (once aweek) 60 euros 12 classes: (twice/week) 100 euros 18 classes: (three times/week) 140 euros Minimum enrollment: 6 Maximum enrollment: 15

Learn techniques of artistic abstraction by creating your own artwork with the guidance of Jeff Bear, experienced artist and art teacher. In three weekly two hour sessions you will learn how the artist can alter and express reality by making an abstract work of art.
