Financial Aid Terms  Need-blind: Financial Need is not  Need Analysis: The process taken into consideration when whereby a student’s financial Admissions is reviewing a file needs are determined through examination of their financial  Examples of Need Blind documents. Institutions  Need-aware: Financial Need is taken into consideration when Admissions is reviewing a file  Full need: A student is unable to fund any portion of their studies

 Financial Aid Package: The total amount of scholarships, grants, work study opportunities and loans awarded to any individual student.


Types of Financial Aid

 Scholarships (merit scholarships, need-based scholarships, scholarships that you must apply for)  Merit Scholarship

 Available for US and non-US citizens

 Need-Based Scholarship

 Available for US and non-US citizens

 Scholarships with Separate Application  Available for US and non-US citizens

 Sports Scholarships (only Division 1 universities)

 Available for US and non-US citizens  Students must register with the NCAA to determine amateur status


Differences between FAFSA and CSS FAFSA 

Only for US citizens

Is free

Is for federal grants and aid

CSS  Is for both US Citizens and International students as well  Has a cost ($25 for the first profile sent, $16 per subsequent profiles sent; may obtain up to 8 waivers  Is for non-federal aid

Both calculate financial need based on different formulas
