Course 1

HEALTHY CHOICES/HEALTHY LIVING A i²Flex course for students entering grades 10-12 June 22 - July 5 (7 on-line lessons, and 3 face-to-face class meetings on June 22, June 27 and July 5, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Faculty: Ms. Lambrini Rontogiannis This project-based course offers an intensive study of the important health and nutrition topics necessary for all high school students to know, so that they can make informed choices to promote physical, mental and emotional health. The student will study such topics as mental health: self-esteem and stress management, nutrition and exercise, sex and human sexuality, substance abuse, and STD’s. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits and satisfy the ACS Athens graduation requirement for Health. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits and satisfy the ACS Athens graduation requirement for Health.

COST: 450 EUROS Minimum enrollment: 5 students. Maximum enrollment: 15 students.

Course 2

CREATE AND DEVELOP YOUR PORTFOLIO: SUMMER ART SEMINARS An intensive studio class for students entering grades 9-12 June 22 – July 5, 2015 (Weekdays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Students should expect to complete additional individual work throughout the duration of the class.

Faculty: Ms. Farida El Gazzar The summer seminars will run for 10 days, 3 hours per seminar. In each seminar, student-artists will develop and strengthen their drawing and creative visual skills. They will be encouraged to practice and experiment with the use of a wide range of materials and media. Classes will take place both indoors and outdoors, at selected locations -- city spaces, museums, parks. Students will practice observational and free style drawing to acquire a sense of space and proportion. In the outdoor sessions, students will record and draw the natural and the urban landscape as studies for compositions. They will practice painting and linear drawing, learning how to record detail from different distances, as well as architectural drawing, recording structures and forms in the city. In the indoor sessions, students will learn to draw still life compositions, using observational and measuring skills, as well as applying gradation of color and greyscale tones. The seminars will offer an introduction to the theory and the principles of design; a general view of the field of applied arts (from aesthetic, technical and expressive viewpoints); combinations and compositions using a variety of materials and applications for the development of students’ aesthetic sense and creativity. Students will have created a new body of work showing a diverse selection of subject and use of medium, while enriching their art portfolio. 1. Still Life Drawing Sessions 1-2 (three hours) 2. Compositional Drawing Sessions 3-5 (three hours) 3. Linear Drawing Sessions 6-7 (three hours) 4. Architectural Drawing Sessions 8-9 (three hours) 5. Portfolio Preparation Session 10 (three hours) Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in Arts, towards fulfillment of the ACS Athens graduation requirement.

COST: 450 euros Minimum enrollment: 5 students. Maximum enrollment: 10 students

Course 3

Introduction to Robotics This university-level course teaches students the fundamentals of creating and programming a robot to interact with its environment and perform basic tasks involving motion, sensor data and decision-making. Introduction to Robotics tightly combines instruction in theory with practical application. After a review of relevant topics in linear algebra and geometry in the context of robotics, students are introduced to mechanical engineering concepts such as motor control, timing sequences and sensor systems, and are taught essential programming skills. Both the engineering concepts and programming skills are then applied to the task of building and programming a robot. Students develop their project in the framework of the engineering design process—from the analysis of requirements and initial design to implementation and testing. The course concludes with the students’ presentation of their team’s robot.

Course Objectives Introduction to Robotics aims to

Expose students to the history of robotics and current developments in the field;

Strengthen students’ grasp of the mathematics and physics involved in the design, construction and control of robots, with a focus on linear algebra and geometry;

Introduce students to fundamental concepts of electrical and mechanical engineering that will help them better understand the design and development challenges in robotics;

Help students develop and deepen their grasp of programming concepts and their programming skills;

Give students hands-on practice in building and programming an actual robot;

Engage students in an engineering design task that sharpens their analytical, planning, presentation and teamwork skills;

Provide a challenging, highly engaging and personally rewarding learning experience.

Course Hours and Structure The course is designed to be completed in 10 3-hour class sessions. At least one-third of the total course hours are devoted to the hands-on, supervised team project.

Content Introduction An overview of the history of robotics and current developments in the field. Mathematics and Physics for Robotics Topics in linear algebra and geometry. Review of the physics of torque, friction, forces and dynamics. The Engineering Design Process Understand the design process: initial mechanical and application requirements analysis, basic mechanical design, implementation, and performance measurements. Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Challenges Major control issues and automatic control theory; energy consumption; collection, analysis and exploitation of sensor data. Introduction to Robotics Programming Basic concepts of programming; introduction to the programming environment, tools and basic commands of robotics platforms. Programming Concepts and Skills Program structure and flow; variables, decision and control structures (if-statements, loops, etc.). Application of programming concepts in robotics platforms.

The Project Students work in teams to design, build and program a special-purpose robot to a specific task. Project Presentations Each team presents their project to the class.

Project Director

Introduction to Robotics is led by Dr. George Bravos, Director of Information Technology and Engineering programs at Hellenic American University. Dr. Bravos earned his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the National Technical University of Athens and his Ph.D. from the University of Piraeus. Before coming to the University, he was an adjunct lecturer and researcher at the Harokopion University of Athens. Dr. Bravos’ current research involves designing, developing and validating services and algorithms based on cooperative wireless networks and energyaware systems. COST: 400 EUROS Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in TECHNOLOGY, towards fulfillment of the ACS Athens graduation requirement.

To enroll in courses 1-3: Contact Ms. Marietta Garbis, garbism@acs.gr or 210-6393-200, ext. 302. Students may sign up in person with Ms. Garbis in the Theater/IIC Office in the Theater at ACS lobby.
