Peter Murphy Director Vienna International School

To All 2014 Student-‐Athletes,

We are proud to welcome you to the Vienna International School for this event. These games are an opportunity for you to display your athletic skills, but perhaps more importantly; they are an opportunity for you to display your sportsmanship and international understanding. We know that we can look forward to terrific displays of fair play and excellence from all student-‐athletes. None of this would be possible without the enormous amount of behind-‐the-‐scenes support from a dedicated group of staff from the Vienna International School community who have made this event possible. Be sure to thank your coaches who have dedicated their time and expertise to make you all better student-‐athletes. We hope you have a special experience here and above all, enjoy the sport and the competition. Good luck to all of you!

TOURNAMENT ORGANIZATION (as per SCIS handbook) Please refer to SCIS handbook for the general information regarding the tournament (pgs. 28, 37). A reminder that a maximum of 10 players (including managers) are allowed per school. SCORES AND RECORDING: We have an official’s table that will keep all the scores from the referees. All scores will be posted directly after each match on the main score posting area in the gym. OFFICIALS: Austrian National Officials will be calling the games and following FIVB rules. The head referee is Rudolf Genner and he will give a short speech at the coaches meeting. GAME SCHEDULE: We will follow the format on page 28 in the SCIS Handbook for a 6 team round robin tournament. Tiebreaker rules are described on page 37 of SCIS Handbook. BALLS: The balls that will be used are MIKASA. We will provide 10 warm up balls in each gymnasium – 5 balls for each team warming up. CHANGING ROOMS: Each room is sign posted for the respective teams, we only have 3 changing rooms with 2 teams in each area, there are showers in each changing room for the students, I ask that after the days play they shower at school before housing pick up. VALUABLES: All bags and valuables can be stored in the gym. FOOTWEAR: Indoor gym shoes only are allowed into the gym floor area. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE: A nurse will be available at all times during the tournament. SPORTSMANSHIP: The philosophy of both VIS and the SCIS organization is the promotion of “Team Spirit” and “Fairplay” above all else, as educators and coaches, we must make sure this is adhered to in all aspects of the way we play. Referees have been clearly instructed to support this. As tournament director I will fully support the referees and their decision making and we will not accept un-‐sportsman like behaviour from any player or coach. I thank you in advance for your team spirit shown on this matter! SCIS Varsity Boys Volleyball Championship 2014, Vienna RESPECT, MOTIVATION, ATTITUDE, DETERMINATION

ELIGIBILITY FOR COMPETITION – SCIS 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

All competitors must be full time students at the school they represent. Competitors may only represent their schools in one sport discipline in any given season. When SCIS offers tournaments at both High School and middle school the following shall apply: Varsity & Junior Varsity athletes must be members of the High School, and must be currently attending Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 without exception and with a maximum age of 18 on the 1st September in the academic year of participation. Exceptionally talented MS students who are 13 or older on September 1 at the beginning of the school year may be given permission by the school AD to participate in Varsity SCIS tournaments. The names of this athlete/s must be forwarded to the SCIS chairman at the beginning of each season (by the end of September, November and March) and the named athlete/s cannot play in the MS SCIS tournament in the same sport that season. Middle School athletes must be members of the Middle School and must be currently attending Grades 6, 7 or 8 without exception. When SCIS offers tournaments at High School only the following shall apply: Varsity & Junior Varsity athletes must be members of the High School, and must be currently attending Grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 without exception and with a maximum age of 18 on the 1st September in the academic year of participation. OR have a minimum age of 13 on the1st September in the academic year of participation.

Further Clarification: Varsity is the School’s 1st Team; Junior Varsity is the School’s 2nd Team however: SCIS encourages each member school to recognize their JV program as developmental in nature. Schools are encouraged to limit participation to students in grade 9 through 10. However SCIS recognizes the diverse nature of its member schools with regards to size and ability. Individual athletic directors may make decisions based on the best interest of their students/school’s participation and success of the SCIS events. For example; participation of Eleven grade students (and rarely twelve grade) on Junior Varsity teams may occur based on similarities of skill, social and physical development factors and to enable a school to field a team. Players who have represented a school in a particular sport and in the same season at Varsity level are ineligible at any other level in the same sporting season. A school may enter a declared Junior Varsity team in a Varsity Tournament to enhance the tournament organization (e.g. the 8th team when only 7 Varsity teams have registered). This is only permissible if and only when the same school has a Varsity team competing in the said Tournament. A school’ s eligibility to be declared a Varsity or Junior Varsity School is determined by the collective membership based on the size of school and maturity of the Athletic Program. A student is not permitted to represent a school in more than one SCIS sport in any given season
