SUPPORTS HELPS ANSWERS RECOMMENDS

JUNE 2018

Have a wonderful summer! Dear ACS Athens Community, dear Friends, As we have reached the end of the school year, we would like to thank you once again for all your support and wish you a happy and relaxing summer! We would also like to congratulate the ACS Athens graduating class of 2018 and wish them every success in their future plans! For all of us on the PTO Board it has been an enriching experience and a privilege to serve our school during this academic year and we hope you feel we did a good job. We also hope some of you will consider joining the PTO Board for the next academic year. It might not be an easy job but it is without a doubt a worthwhile, rewarding experience! We are one, thank you!

LETTER TO A PARENT:

The power of a hug Many times I think of the biggest blessings that we have as human beings. All the things that make our lives better, sweeter, brighter and worth living. Among them there is only one that we all can have, all can share, costs nothing but at the same time is the most valuable… It is a hug! The most powerful thing that we have! Did you know that a hug: • Strengthens our immune system • Makes us more patient • Is perfect treatment for stress and anxiety • Builds self esteem, especially in children • Releases dopamine, which is a source of good feelings and motivation • Helps us get through painful or stressful situations • Releases oxytocin, which is a hormone that f ills us with happiness • Conveys many emotions without saying a word • Balances the nervous system • Is a strong display of love and support

So when you feel that you are not strong enough, or good enough, or smart, tender, kind enough, a loving parent or partner, just give your child and your loved ones a hug. They are going to get the message that you love and support them with all your heart! The great American psychologist and family therapist Virginia Satir said, that we need 4 hugs a day for survival, 8 hugs a day for maintenance and 12 hugs a day for growth… The healing process of every soul begins with a touch and embrace. It’s just that simple.

I wish you all a great summer, full of happy memories - and many hugs!!! Best wishes, Rania

THEMES FROM THE PAST MONTHS

The Salvation Army Drive

Literacy Festival - May

Thank you for your contributions during our Salvation Army drive. We are presenting you their “Thank you” letter, which was sent to us as a token of their gratitude. May we always be able to help people in need and may there be less and less people who need our help.

The 3rd annual ACS Athens Literacy Festival ran across school with students of all levels reading their own stories or poetry at different venues on campus. The PTO collaborated with the Elementary School to organise some aspects of the Festival.

K-12 VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION-May In May, samples of the beautiful art work of students from all grades was exhibited at our school’s Theater Lobby. Congratulations to all students, as well as their art teachers for their efforts and wonderful work throughout the year. Also, special congratulations to the ACS Athens IB 2 Art class students, whose Visual Arts exhibition in March was stunning!

THEMES FROM THE PAST MONTHS

Color of peace event- April In collaboration with the “White card campaign” and under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, ACS Athens hosted a memorable school wide event on April 20th. The “Color of Peace” event was dedicated to promoting peace through sport, while honoring those who have lost their home because of war. Many inspiring speeches were heard during the event, while everyone sang “Imagine” and other beautiful songs performed by the Middle school band, before lifting their white cards up to the sky.

ACS at the Athens Science Festival 2018-April On April 25th, all fourth grade students participated in the “Athens Science Festival 2018” at the Technopolis City with their Green City project. It was the first time ACS Athens took part in this science festival, but more importantly, our fourth grade students were the only elementary school students presenting amongst a group of much older students. Bravo!

Athletic Competitions Congratulations to all our ACS Athens athletes for their effort, hard work, every participation in athletic competitions representing our school and of course every win! Congratulations also to all coaches and all parents supporting them and standing by them! Go ACS Athens!

HEALTHY & YUMMY

What is the most hurtful thing your children have ever said to you? “I hate you” or “you embarrassed me”.

This month we present:

What is the funniest thing you remember your children saying? Nick - when he was 2 years old, when

asked who his best friend was, answered: Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle. Lizzie - everything that comes out of her mouth. Abi - “no, no, no it’s got a good beat” explaining a song she learned in preschool or “we were just laying out on the beach”, explaining why she and her friend dumped the whole sand station onto the floor.

Our best kid friendly snack recipes

What are your children’s favorite sports or hobbies? Swimming, baseball, American Football and volleyball.

How do you get your children to eat vegetables?

Put them on their plate. I got lucky, all my kids love fruits and veggies.

How did you choose your children’s names?

Mark Nicholas: Mark for his dad, Nicholas a good strong Greek name. Elizabeth Riley: Elizabeth - she just looked like one and Riley is my mom’s maiden name. Abi Rebecca: Nick named her and I got outvoted; Rebecca is my middle name and my mom’s first name.

What is the best thing you enjoy about being a parent? Watching them develop their talents, trying new things, and overcoming challenges. I love watching them laugh and enjoying each other’s company.

What’s the hardest thing about being a parent?

Watching them struggle, always worrying if we are doing enough, or too much. Hoping I didn’t mess them up.

Please complete the sentence anyway you like “Being a parent means…” Showing up! Saying “you’re sorry.” Trying to teach through example.

A big THANK YOU to Gefsinus, our cafeteria company, for their generous provision of coffee and tea at our PTO General Meetings! #5
