Stavros S. Niarchos was born in Athens, Greece on July 3, 1909 to parents Spyros Niarchos and Eugenia Coumandaros.
•
Following high school, he studied law at the University of Athens.
Stavros Niarchos served in the Greek Navy in World War II, and was awarded such honors as the Order of the Phoenix and the Royal Order of King George I? For many years, he owned the largest private shipping fleet in the world?
He began work in the family grain business in 1929, which included importing wheat from Argentina.

The first six freighters bought by the Narchos family were purchased during the Great Depression.

His first vessel was seized in World War II, and when it was destroyed, the insurance money was used to expand the Niarchos fleet, and primarily oil tankers were bought.

In 1956, he built and began to operate the Hellenic Shipyard, or “Skaramanga Yard”, which was later put under state control. The Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation was established upon his death in April of 1996.
