Course 1

SAT PREP ACADEMY

A program for students in grades 10 – 11 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) FACULTY: Ms. Matina Katsiyianni and Ms. Sarah Contomichalos

Ø Ten intensive daily sessions, led by experienced teachers Ø Classes meet for three hours between 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Ø Two classes per session: Mathematics /Critical Reading and Writing (Students enroll in both classes.)

Ø Maximum class size: 7-8 students Ø Classes will focus on specific test taking strategies, test taking practice and content Ø

review and reinforcement.

Participants will be expected to complete an additional 1 hour of on-line work each day.

Minimum of 6 students required for course to run. Maximum number of students who can be enrolled: 16.

Courses for ACS Athens high school credit Course 2

HEALTHY CHOICES/HEALTHY LIVING A program for students entering grades 10-12 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Students will be expected to engage in daily on-line learning activities and complete a major project in addition to attending all classes.

Faculty: Ms. Anna Basil

This discussion-rich, project-based course offers an intensive study of the important health and nutrition topics necessary for all high school students to know, so that they can make informed choices to promote physical, mental and emotional health. The student will study such topics as self-esteem, stress management, abuse, First Aid techniques-CPR, nutrition and exercise, human sexuality, sex and family planning, substance abuse, and STD’s. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits and satisfy the ACS Athens graduation requirement for Health.

COST: 400 euros Minimum enrollment: 5 students. Maximum enrollment: 15 students.

Course 3

IMPROVISE/MOVE/DANCE

Contact improvisation and partnering based on ballroom dances A program for students entering grades 10-12 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Students will be expected to complete daily research/practice outside of class.

Faculty: Ms. Tatiana Myrkou

Contact Improvisation is a partnering dance form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and most quintessentially - following a shared point of contact. Students will explore contact and weight-sharing improvisation. The culminating product of this program will be a duet (minimum of two minutes) including both of these concepts. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in the Arts towards fulfillment of the ACS Athens graduation requirement.

COST: 400 euros Minimum enrollment: 6 students. Maximum enrollment: 16 students.

Course 4

AUDIO/VIDEO PRODUCTION LAB A program for students entering grades 9-12 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Students should expect to complete an additional hour per day of on-line/individual work outside of class.

Get the skills to make a short video documentary and a short audio/radio piece with this intensive practical course. Designed for beginners, this course offers the technical and creative foundations for such productions. 2 groups (1 audio, 1 video) will be formed to work on the production stage of the program.

Skills that will be explored: Concept development Storytelling Writing for radio and TV Conducting Interviews and collect audio/video footage Use of camera, sound and video recording and editing equipment and software Collaborative shooting, recording and editing of video and audio.

Software used: Adobe Audition Pro iMovie Final Cut Pro GarageBand Prerequisite: Computer literacy recommended. Students are encouraged to supply their own digital video camera or audio recording equipment. Otherwise students will have shared access to ACS Athens equipment. Also, please provide your own portable USB drive so you can save your project and take it home. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in Technology towards fulfillment of the ACS Athens graduation requirement.

INVITATION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE USING JAVA An introductory programming class for students entering grades 10-12 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Students should expect to complete up to one hour of on-line/individual work per day of class.

What is Computer Science? What are its applications in other disciplines, and its impact in society?

Get introduced to computer science and programming through real-life applications. You do not have to have any prior knowledge of programming to be successful in this course, which has been designed as a step-by-step introduction to the art of problem solving using the computer -- and the Java language. Labs provide opportunities to experiment with the concepts presented in class and problems that arise in real life. Students will develop an understanding of programs like the ones we run on our computers, on the web and on our smart phones (I-phones, android phones, I-pads).

Productivity tools, digital design, games and graphics all are the result of careful and inspired programming.

Programming is actually both a science and an art. It requires mathematical knowledge as well as a good mind for structuring and presenting information, as well as good knowledge of a new language, a computer language like Java, C++, Visual Basic, Python, and lots of others. It also requires the skills to use a program that will allow you to transcribe your ideas and goals into that language and convert it to an error-free set of instructions that the computer understands. The end result is a computer-understandable transcription of the thoughts, design and grand plan of a human or group of humans, for the benefit of other humans! If done correctly, programming is also beautiful in its design, efficient, fast, responsive and enchanting in its outcome: you only have to take a look at your favorite computer game! The course will be a blend of theory and hands-on practice on a development platform. Since Java is universal, students can use their favorite computers and operating systems (Windows, MacOS or LINUX) to develop platform-independent programs that will actually do useful stuff. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in Technology towards fulfillment of the ACS graduation requirement.

“RE-THINK ATHENS!” A program for students entering grades 8-12 A CAS opportunity for IB Diploma candidates June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Faculty: Dr. Tonia Firigou

An exciting summer field study experience, in which students will have the opportunity to become reacquainted with Pericles’ city through history, culture and civilization. This course will explore what culture is and how culture affects our lives; and what museums, monuments and other historical places represent in every day life. We will spend lots of time downtown, visiting different neighborhoods, cultural sites and monuments, to develop a historical and social picture of the city.

We will give much thought and practice to the idea of how we can “re-think Athens” and make it a better place to live. Athens is a great European city and a vibrant metropolis with a deep historical heritage that we can all get to know better. If we know our city and its history well, and if we have a positive attitude about it, we will truly be ready to “rethink Athens;” and as a group, to develop and present innovative proposals for transforming our city – to improve the quality of life of all of its citizens. Students’ proposals/presentations for rethinking and reinventing Athens will be displayed in an exhibition in the Theater at ACS in the fall. Successful completion of this course will earn IB Diploma students CAS credit in the areas of creativity, action or service.

Course 7

WRITING IN ACTION A journey through the writing process for students entering grades 7-8 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Faculty: Ms. Amalia Zavacopoulou and Ms. Stavi Dimas Writing is a process of thinking and learning. We write to discover what we think and have to say, to make meaning of our experience and to communicate our thinking and our discoveries to others. Writing in Action is a two-week writing workshop that combines exploring historical artifacts with the writing process. Athens’ museums and historical sites are filled with wonders. Students will visit a selected museum in Athens and engage with artifacts directly in a hands-on setting with a museum specialist. They will observe, measure, sketch and take notes on an artifact of their choice. They will talk, ask questions, speculate and wonder. They will solicit others’ observations and questions. They’ll pose and discard hypotheses. And all of this experience, in addition to their personal observation and supplementary research will act as preparation for writing a formal essay on an artifact by which they have become fascinated. In the writing workshop, students will be guided through the steps of the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, peer critiquing, revising and editing, to produce a finished final draft of a well-crafted essay. They will leave the course having made discoveries about one of the city’s treasures. They will see more clearly that the writing process is a process of thinking and learning. And they will feel more confident about their ability to express themselves in a well-written essay.

Course 8

MATH EXPLORERS An adventure in mathematical creativity, problem-solving, game playing, puzzle-solving and logical thinking for students entering grades 7-8 June 19 – July 3, 2013 (10:00 – 1:00 daily) WEEKDAYS ONLY; NO CLASS on June 24 (Whit Monday holiday) Faculty: Dr. Evelin Toumpakari

Thinking is a joyful pursuit. This is a course for students who want to build on their skills in and passion for mathematics. In addition to learning mathematical skills that will be useful for further math study, students in this course will have fun facing intriguing questions, conundrums and conjectures that lead to imaginative and creative thinking. Students will experience the joy of being creative, discovering puzzle-solving techniques, sharpening their abilities to devise logical arguments, and developing a greater appreciation for various kinds of mathematics. Students in the course will visit ancient monuments, approach works of art in museums and explore nature with a mathematical eye and frame of mind. They will play games and play with ideas, solve puzzles, build things and work individually and in groups to solve challenging problems. They will not only produce original solutions to problems, but will also clearly explain their thinking. The course will be driven by student participation, presentations, discussions and lots of laughter. It will be a lively, modernday “Pythagorean Brotherhood and Sisterhood.”
