INVITATION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE USING JAVA An introductory programming class for students entering grades 9-12 June 29 – July 10, 2015 (Weekdays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Students should expect to complete up to one hour of on-line/individual work per day of class.
Faculty: Mr. Constantinos Papageorgiou What is Computer Science? What are its applications in other disciplines, and its impact in society? Get introduced to computer science and programming through real-life applications. You do not have to have any prior knowledge of programming to be successful in this course, which has been designed as a step-by-step introduction to the art of problem solving using the computer -- and the Java language. Labs provide opportunities to experiment with the concepts presented in class and problems that arise in real life. Students will develop an understanding of programs like the ones we run on our computers, on the web and on our smart phones (I-phones, android phones, I-pads). Productivity tools, digital design, games and graphics all are the result of careful and inspired programming. Programming is actually both a science and an art. It requires mathematical knowledge as well as a good mind for structuring and presenting information, as well as good knowledge of a new language, a computer language like Java, C++, Visual Basic, Python, and lots of others. It also requires the skills to use a program that will allow you to transcribe your ideas and goals into that language and convert it to an error-free set of instructions that the computer understands. The end result is a computer-understandable transcription of the thoughts, design and grand plan of a human or group of humans, for the benefit of other humans! If done correctly, programming is also beautiful in its design, efficient, fast, responsive and enchanting in its outcome: you only have to take a look at your favorite computer game! The course will be a blend of theory and hands-on practice using BlueJ as an integrated development environment (IDE) for the Java programming language, The classes will focus on developing programs to support the learning and teaching of object-oriented programming using Java and to develop computational thinking. Since Java is universal, students can use their favorite computers and operating systems (Windows, MacOS or LINUX) to develop platform-independent programs that will actually do useful stuff. Successful completion of this course will earn students .5 credits in Technology, towards fulfillment of the ACS Athens graduation requirement. COST: 450 euros Minimum enrollment: 5 students. Maximum enrollment: 15 students

CREATE AND DEVELOP YOUR PORTFOLIO: SUMMER ART SEMINARS An intensive studio class for students entering grades 10-12 June 29 – July 10, 2015 (Weekdays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Students should expect to complete additional individual work throughout the duration of the class.
Faculty: Ms. Farida El Gazzar The summer seminars will run for 10 days, 3 hours per seminar. In each seminar, student-artists will be challenged to exercise and strengthen their drawing and creative visual skills and to develop ideas, while also practicing the use of a wide range of materials and media. Classes will take place both indoors and outdoors, at selected locations -- city spaces, museums, parks. Students will practice observational and free style drawing and create graphic and fine art. In the outdoor sessions, students will record and draw nature and the urban landscape as studies for compositions. They will practice painting and linear drawing, learning how to record detail from different distances, as well as architectural drawing, recording architectural forms and structures in the city. The seminars will offer an introduction to the theory and the principles of design; a general view of the field of applied arts (from aesthetic, technical and expressive viewpoints); combinations and compositions using a variety of materials and applications for the development of students’ aesthetic sense and creativity. 1. Life Drawing Sessions 1-2 (three hours each) 2. Composition Drawing and Photography Sessions 3-5 (three hours) 3. Linear Drawing Sessions 6-7 (three hours) 4.
