Dear Member I am sorry to let you know that our member Lord Jim Prior from Suffolk has recently died, aged 89. Jim was a keen supporter of the breed and had built up a sizeable herd of pedigree South Devons registered under the prefix Brampton since his retirement from politics. Many of you will also have known South Hams breeder Reg Nicholls who, although not a member of the Society, supported Society Sales and regularly bought pedigree South Devon bulls. Tragically, Reg recently lost his life in a farm accident. Our sincere condolences to both families, and let us hope for better news to convey in the New Year. The office will be closed from Friday 23rd December until Tuesday 3rd January, and if any registrations are received during this time they will be date-stamped 30th December. 1

Council nomination papers are enclosed with this newsletter if there is a vacancy arising in your region. Every member has a right to nominate another member in his/her region to act as representative on Council, and please take a few minutes to give this some consideration. The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday 6th January. If there are more nominations than vacancies in a region, then an election will be called. A list of the new Show Rules is inside, and there are some slight amendments following this week’s Council meeting. The Rules are designed for ‘best practice’ by exhibitors at Shows, for the safety of spectators and participants alike, and to help the judge carry out his duties as easily as possible. If you are considering showing in 2017 please would you familiarise yourself with these Rules, and thank you for your understanding. May I ask you to equip yourselves with cameras over the next few weeks, especially if there is any snow – so that we may replenish our archive and have some new material for next year’s Christmas cards and the 2018 calendar. In any case, photographs are always welcomed (preferably in electronic format). Thank you for your Christmas cards and good wishes, and may we in turn wish you all a very happy Christmas, and a prosperous and peaceful New Year! Best wishes from Caroline, Liz and Elizabeth

PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 Following the loss of venue for our Performance Championships national event when the Livestock Event closed at the NEC, Council have decided to stage the Championships in 2017 within Beef Expo, the NBA’s annual technical beef show, which is to be held at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on Thursday 18th May. As in 2016 animals will be judged on a combination of inspection and Breedplan performance points; and there will be classes for heifers and bulls born in 2015 and 2016.

AUCTION OF PROMISES The Society’s popular bi-annual fund-raising event will next be held immediately following the Annual General Meeting at Exeter in April. This is always a fun event, with lots of different things to bid for – from short breaks at other members’ farms, to bottles of all sorts of wonderful drinks, hand-crafted weathervanes, sheepskin rugs, and plenty of other goodies. Please would you get thinking about what you might be able to offer to be sold at this auction, and let us know as soon as you can – let your imagination wonder! As well as bidding on the night, there will also be the opportunity to place bids by post once the catalogue is put together. In the past the Auction has raised as much as £5,000, which is tremendous; and this year the proceeds will be put towards the National Shows in 2017 and 2018 as agreed by Council. 6

CHeCS ACCREDITATION FOR TB The Cattle Health Certification Standards (CHeCS) body has recently launched a new herd accreditation for bovine TB, and more information is available from http://www.checs.co.uk/bovine-tb-herd-accreditation. In my capacity as chairman of the NBA pedigree committee and a member of the board, I have been involved in discussions prior to its launch, and a statement has recently been put together on behalf of the NBA board, as follows: “The National Beef Association has serious reservations which prevents the organisation from supporting the new CHeCS bTB Herd Accreditation standard. “The NBA considers the standard to be divisive and unfair, and another rod to penalise those herds which are persistently affected by the ravages of TB. “The voluntary scheme calls for ‘a proactive approach to controlling bTB’ with recognition of the efforts of those cattle farmers who join up, and it focusses heavily on extensive bio-security measures, additional testing, and quarantining of purchased cattle. “However, the best risk rating of ‘10’ is unachievable for the majority of cattle farmers, and any who have had a TB breakdown within the past year and who join up to this CHeCS system will be rated ‘0’ and therefore gain nothing. “For a herd to be TB ‘accredited’ would be a reality for very few in the High Risk and Edge Areas of England and Wales, and is therefore commercially and morally unfair at this time. “The NBA would welcome a wider discussion with CHeCS and the Health Scheme providers.” This statement has been backed by the SDHBS Council, but it is up to individual members to decide whether TB accreditation is of interest for their particular herd.

REGIONAL TB WORKSHOPS A series of regional workshops has been arranged by XL Vets Training Services to help understand bio-security measures, current control measures in England, and bTB epidemiology and transmission routes. They are to be held as follows:

ROBIN & SANDRA WESTON Robin & Sandra have posted an update on their charitable activities this year, and Robin’s third Tour de France, which can be found at http://www.samweston.co.uk/cycling-tour-de-france-prostate-uk I would encourage you to have a look, as it’s very inspiring and just shows what can be achieved at the sprightly age of 75 – well done, Robin!

SALES IN 2017 DNA Testing If you are planning to bring bulls to Society Sales in the Spring please allow plenty of time for registration and DNA testing, ideally 10 weeks in case of difficulties in obtaining results (in other words, now!) Health requirements TB – all cattle must be pre-movement tested within 60 days of the date of Sale, whether the holding is in a TB1 or TB4 region CHeCS – all vendors must be members of a CHeCS health scheme BVD – all cattle must either be from herds which are CHeCS accredited free of BVD, or tested negative for BVD antigen; and all cattle must be fully vaccinated at least one month prior to Sale date (for females this also means at least one month prior to service). It is quite possible that your veterinary practice can access regional funding via pharmaceutical companies to subsidise the cost of BVD testing, and it could be in your interests to pose the question. 9

Johnes – all cattle must be from herds at CHeCS risk level 1, 2 or 3 Spring Show & Sale Entries are now invited for the Spring Show & Sale, which will be held at Exeter on Wednesday 5th April. Please request entry forms from the office. Midland Club Sale The Midland Club will be holding their annual sale at Stratford upon Avon on Saturday 6th May. Autumn Show & Sale The Society’s Autumn Show & Sale will be held at Cirencester on Saturday 7th October.

SHOW RULES FOR EXHIBITORS Agreed by Council December 2016, and applicable from 1 January 2017 1

South Devon breeders must read and comply with the rules and regulations laid down by the individual Show Societies, both before entering and at the Show; and these must take priority over the requirements of the South Devon Herd Book Society (SDHBS) but if a subject is not mentioned the SDHBS rules will apply.

2

No ‘faking’ is allowed by most Show Societies. This means that there must be no tampering with their animals by any exhibitor to conceal defects, including deliberately hiding white hair.

3

All animals born after 1 January 2016 and all bulls over six months of age entered for the classes must wear bulldog clips in their noses (nose rings in bulls fulfil this requirement) when not stalled from the time of off-loading to the time of loading back on to cattle transport. This does not apply to calves at foot shown with their dams, but does apply to calves over six months of age entered for a calf class.

4

Exhibitors must not enter or bring to shows animals which have been bred by the person judging the South Devon classes at that Show. If an animal is then forwarded to the judge it shall remain unplaced. It would be unwise also to enter or bring an animal bred by the interbreed judge, although that is outside the SDHBS’ jurisdiction. 10

5

Exhibitors are expected to try to be reasonably smartly turned out, eg wearing a tie and having their white coat buttoned up, both during judging and in the Grand Parade.

6

The use of mobile phones for any purposes during the class judging is not permitted in the show ring.

7

Any non-compliance with these rules may be reported by other exhibitors to the stewards, who in turn must report the complaint to the Chief Cattle Steward. If after investigation the complaint is upheld, the animal may be disqualified.

8

The Judge’s decision is final.

AND FINALLY … DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN When women are depressed they either eat or go shopping. When men are depressed they invade another country. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. A dog is a man’s best friend. Now you know which sex is smarter. Only two things are necessary for a man to do to keep his wife happy. One is to let her think she is having her own way, and the other is to let her have it. Any married man should forget his mistakes – it’s no use two people remembering the same thing. It’s not true that men prefer foolish women. Rather they prefer women who can pretend to be foolish whenever necessary, which is the very core of intelligence.
