Dear Member If you have any outstanding registrations please would you endeavor to get them to us before the end of this month. Thank you. Enclosed with this newsletter are Council election forms for all regions except South & South East (region 4). I would encourage you all to exercise your membership right to nominate a member within your region who you would like to represent you on the Society’s Council. The deadline for replies is Friday 4th January. The last Council meeting of this calendar year was held earlier this week, and there are some policy decisions from that meeting that are brought to your attention inside this newsletter. Also enclosed with this newsletter is a form asking for your response, about the future of the Autumn Show & Sale. Any decisions will be based on feedback from the membership so please do let us have these forms back by Monday 7th January. 1

Results are included from the Cornish Winter Fair, the Cornwall Pedigree Calf Show, and the East of England Winter Stock Festival. Well done to all exhibitors at shows these past few weeks, including Stewart Ward who achieved £4.20/kg at the Truro Primestock market. Congratulations also to organic beef producers Tim and Jo Budden from Higher Hacknell Farm, Burrington, North Devon for taking the Produce of the Year Award at the Cornish Mutual sponsored South West Farmer Awards. We will shortly begin work on compilation of the Herd Book containing registrations for 2017. If you would like to reserve a copy please let us know. Work will start in earnest on the Journal in the New Year, and if you would like to advertise but have not received a personal letter from the office please do let us know. There will be a members list in this edition – but only for those members who have returned a signed Data Protection form giving us permission to publish. Most members have returned their forms, but there still remain about 160 who have not – are you one of those? There will be an Auction of Promises at the AGM which will be held in Exeter on Tuesday 26th March. Please get your ‘thinking caps’ on to reflect on how you might wish to help. Thank you for all your support this past year from all of us here in the office. We will all be taking annual leave between Christmas and the New Year, so the office will be closed from close of play on Friday 21st until Wednesday 2nd. May we wish you a very happy Christmas, and a peaceful New Year – let’s hope 2019 is better for all of us! Caroline, Liz & Elizabeth

COUNCIL MATTERS HEALTH RULES AT SALES Council reviewed the intended amendment to rules for Johnes status and agreed not to enact the ‘risk level one only’ requirement from 2020, having taken further professional advice in the matter. Therefore the current ruling for Johnes will continue to apply for cattle coming to Society Sales: All animals must be from herds that are Johnes risk level one, two, or three only.

PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES From January 2019 (or as soon thereafter as we can make the necessary changes in the office) pedigrees will be printed on smaller sized certificates – A5 instead of A4. This will help to reduce our postage costs. As a further cost reduction, if you are happy not to receive printed pedigree certificates, then please let us know.

DNA CERTIFICATES DNA typing of registered bulls (polling, myostatin, sire verification) is already printed on the pedigree certificate. It has been decided that the additional information relating to ‘beef profile’ does not carry sufficient relevance at the moment to warrant separate certification and will therefore not be printed unless members specifically request it. The results of DNA typing of animals other than registered bulls (eg myostatin of females) will be notified to members by e-mail when we receive them from the laboratory and DNA certificates will not be printed unless members specifically request them.

POLLING RULES From 1st January 2019 all animals that are tested heterozygous (HP) or homozygous (PP) polled will carry the Z prefix. The X prefix will no longer be applied from that date. Sale animals will no longer be inspected for scurring; and purchasers will be advised in the sale catalogue that they should satisfy themselves of the 3

absence or presence of scurs prior to purchasing. Sale animals bearing the Z prefix (ie DNA tested as HP or PP for polling) will be eligible to enter polled South Devon classes at sales and shows.

TYPE CLASSIFICATION Type classification has been trialled for over one year now, and a review of the parameters for classifying will be carried out in June/July 2019 by representatives from the Breed Improvement, Executive, and Judges Advisers committees. Classification visits will be suspended until that time to ensure consistency.

COMPUTER SKILLS TRAINING, WALES Welsh farmers are being offered free computer training as part of a government-funded skills development programme. Classes will be pitched according to the level of experience. Farmers with little or no IT experience will receive two-hour sessions over six weeks; while those with greater experience will be able to receive help with topics such as banking, tax and VAT services. More information can be found on the Farming Connect website on the Skills and Mentoring page.

BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME (BPS), WALES Farmers in Wales have been granted an additional year before the phasing out of BPS payments. The announcement was made at the Welsh Winter Fair that phasing out payments would be postponed until 2021.

EDGE AREA BADGER VACCINATION SCHEME Defra is calling for new applications to the Badger Edge Vaccination Scheme (BEVS 2), which provides grant funding to contribute to the cost of vaccinating badgers against TB in the Edge Area of England, on a cost-sharing basis. Relevant documents, including how to apply and run a scheme, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/search?q=bevs+2. Full applications must be submitted by 25th January 2019 with a view to projects starting in February or March 2019.

SUCKLER BEEF SCHEME, SCOTLAND Farmers in Scotland are urged to apply to the Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme before its deadline on 31st December. Support is available for calves provided that they are at least 75% beef bred, born on a Scottish holding and kept there for 30 days. Animals born on or after 2nd December this year will not be eligible until next year’s scheme. There is no limit to the number of claims that can be made to the scheme and the rate given per animal will be determined by the total number of eligible animals claimed. (In 2017 applicants received £99.49 per animal on the mainland, and £144.22 per animal on the islands.)

AND FINALLY … The wedding ceremony came to the point where the Minister asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child. She stood up and started walking slowly towards the priest. The congregation was aghast as the penny dropped. The bridegroom’s jaw dropped as he stared disbelievingly at the approaching young woman and child. Chaos ensued. The bride threw the bouquet in the air, slapped the groom in the face and burst out crying. Then the groom’s mother fainted. The best men started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation. The Minister asked the woman, “Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?” There was absolute silence in the church. The woman replied, “We can’t hear at the back.”
