DORSET HORN & POLL DORSET SHEEP BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION Dec 2014

With the AGM moving around the country – it was the turn of the Cornish breeders to put on this year’s event. After lots of careful planning it proved a great success for all concerned. With the morning’s meeting finished, breeders moved onto local machinery manufacturers, Teagle. This family owned business put on a fantastic show for us all. providing guided tours around their factory to see how different machines are put together before either being sold in the UK or exported. We would like to thank Tom Teagle and his team for all their hospitality.

Thomas Wright being presented with his trophy for being overall winner of the 2014 Flock competition by judges, Matthew & Adam Care

Our next stop was to this year’s flock competition judges, Matthew & Adam Care, to see their Burhos flock. We started with the stud rams. A mix of new purchases and existing stud rams underlined how much

consideration went into their breeding decisions and how these rams would work on particular female lines within their flock. We went on to see some very uniform and well grown ewe lambs – most of which were in lamb – and then onto their flock ewes, which had just started lambing. Thank you to the Care’s for all their time and fantastic refreshments. Our day ended back at the hotel with the evening dinner. The highlight was no doubt, our guest speaker, Mr Russell Steer, and the raffle which raised £943.40. for local charities. After a Sunday morning walk to blow away the cobwebs for many of us, it was back for a cooked breakfast before travelling on to the French’s to their Wilsey flock. The number of people who attended this second day was testament to the quality of sheep we expected to see.

Thomas & Carly Wright with President, Doreen Price & Chairman, Rob Hole We were not disappointed! Strong flock ewes were backed up by powerful youngsters and impressive stock rams. Lunch was a BBQ laid on by Les, Heather and their family. We all appreciated how much work had gone into the day and the weekend and are grateful to them for putting on the event – it was a great success which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. I would like to finish by thanking everyone for their support and help over the last 2 years and taking this opportunity to wish Ben Lamb every success for his term. Robert Hole 1

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2014 It was in Aberystwyth over dinner that I really realised that we were being asked to come up with some ideas for the 2014 AGM and so began 12 months of thinking and planning. We decided to find a Hotel in Newquay large enough to accommodate the majority of people attending so that the group would not be fragmented and when Aimee answered the telephone and said ‘Yes we would be interested tell me more’ I knew we had found our base and thanks must go to the Kilbirnie for all the help they gave. Because of the length of Cornwall it wouldn’t have done either the Burhos or Wilsey flock justice to visit both in same day and so we were very grateful to Teagles the machinery company at Blackwater in agreeing to a visit. After a pasty lunch we split into groups and they showed us the whole process from the sheet metal going in to Straw choppers, Dung Spreaders, Concrete mixers etc going out. Sincere thanks go to Tom Teagle, The Teagle family and Directors for the very warm welcome they gave us and being Cornish were very proud to be able to take you to a successful Cornish Company. It was then on to The Care family to view The Burhos Flock who had won the Best large flock in the 2013 flock competition. On arrival we were shown a very even and fit bunch of Ewe lambs and their splendid Stock Rams. Matthew & Adam’s knowledge of Pedigrees and explanation of why they bought each ram for corrective mating was outstanding and a credit to them both. They were under added pressure as lambing had started a few days prior to our visit but the ewes looked a picture and very comfortable in their new shed. The visit ended with a cream tea served by Mrs Care and her helpers It was very generous of Francis Fooks and the Fooks Family in giving a ewe lamb as a raffle prize and because of this the raffle raised £943.40 which is being split between the Cornwall Air Ambulance and a Charity of Teagles Choice. I was sitting beside Sophie Hole who was desperate for her ticket to be drawn first and she was not alone, but the lucky recipient was Helen Cole (Week Flock). We have 4

known Helen for many years and she is very passionate about her sheep and is a regular consignee at May Fair. Other prizes included a voucher from the Northern Ireland Club and a voucher from Kivells & Husseys Auctioneers. Many thanks go to everyone who contributed Raffle prizes. Other thanks need to go to Russell Steer for his entertaining life history, BOCM Pauls for their very generous sponsorship for the weekend, Dairy Crest for supplying a beautiful piece of cheese, the Jones family at Pipers Pool for welcoming the Welsh contingent and a few others onto their Farm to see Dorsets in a commercial flock and last but by no means least Marg who had to put up with my continual bombardment of emails and for co-ordinating the weekend. The following morning we were amazed by the number of people who came to Higher Scarsick to view the Wilsey Flock. It was brilliant. When we took on the organising of the 2014 AGM we really wanted it to be pay back time for all good times we have had at past AGM’s and visits we have had with the Society over the years. Les French with the Wilsey Flock

We have made some good friends and wanted to show Cornwall at its best and provide some good Cornish Hospitality. We are very lucky in having a lovely family and good neighbours and friends to do this but what none of us could do anything about was the weather which stayed good for all of the weekend. If you have not been to the AGM before please make next year your first. It gives you the opportunity to meet your President and Council members on a social basis as well as seeing the versatility of the Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset Sheep on farms throughout the United Kingdom. We are already looking forward to the 2015 AGM. Heather & Les French With very many thanks to Heather and Les for writing this article and also to them and the Care family and all their families and helpers for putting on such a fantastic weekend for the AGM in Cornwall. 5

DAVID MATTHEWS MEMORIAL TROPHY AND BURSARY – THE CORNELLA CUP You may, or may not, be aware that three years ago Mrs Liz Matthews gave a trophy to the Society in memory of her late husband, David. It was decided that this trophy should be awarded on an annual basis at the AGM to the most enterprising young breeder. David was renowned for helping young breeders and they were very dear to his heart. Together with this she gave an extremely generous cheque for £1,000, £100 of which to be given every year for ten years to the winner to help towards their expenses in attending the AGM. Nominations are now invited from all members for 2015. Nominees will be required to forward a CV together with their sheep experiences and achievements to date.to the President If you would like to nominate somebody please send your nomination, to the Breed Secretary by the July Council meeting to be held on Wednesday, 1st July, 2015. The winner will be chosen by our President. The winner will be informed well before the AGM and their cheque for £100 sent to them in advance so they have the funds. However, the trophy will still be presented at the AGM together with a replica glass tumbler to keep.

AVERAGES SOAR AT 25TH NORTHERN IRELAND AUTUMN DORSET SHEEP SALE. The average sale price across all the sections at last week's Dorset sheep sale - 25th Annual Autumn event, took a big jump as demand out stripped supply and it was the Riverview flock, belonging to Trevor and Sharron Knox from Armoy, Ballymoney who truly had a night to remember. Their outstanding pen of in lamb ewe lambs produced the Show Champion, and the top priced lot in the ewe lamb section with two Riverview entries. The judge Mr Samuel Caldwell from Rasharkin, awarded the top award to a very eye catching ewe lamb, a daughter of the English bred Blackhill sire from the renowned flock of J.B. Dufosee, Warminster, Wiltshire. This Danske bank sponsored, Autumn show Champion was later snapped up in the sale ring for 440gns by Colin, Woodside, Ballynure, Ballyclare. Claiming top price in the ewe lamb section and second highest overall of the evening was another Riverview ewe lamb again from the Knox's pen who sold for 460gns to Laura Weir, a Ballymena Veterinarian Surgeon who added this one, the second prize ewe lamb to her Lisnafillan flock at Gracehill. Laura Weir's Lisnafillan flock was winners in the shearling ewe section and was also responsible for the evening's top sale price of 470gns, selling to G. Farrell, Drumquin,Omagh. This heavy in lamb ewe by the flocks Granagh No1 sire was first prize shearling and comes from Laura's prize winning Lisnafillan flock. The Riverview offering was back in the price listing with a 420gns sale to Alan and Fiona Cathcart, Enniskillen. William and Colin Johnston 's Islandview flock at Glenavy, Crumlin, produced a strong consignment of ewe lambs, again all scanned in lamb, and were well rewarded selling one at 360gns to Robert Burns, Magheramourne, Larne, and another at 340gns to Ken Thompson, Drumquin, Omagh. Ken Thompson purchased another ewe lamb at 340gns also, this time coming from the Knox's Riverview offering, with her triplet sister also making above the 300gns mark. Martin Campbell from Carnlough also broke through the 300 gns mark on a couple of occasions and recorded a high of 320gns for his third prize winner. The ewe lamb section levelled at £244 on average, up £47 per head on the year. The shearling ewe and older section did not have as large of turnout as the ewe lamb section but still fared very well at auction, with a big demand for in lamb ewes from the buyers around the ring, being led by Laura Weir's first prize winner. The Johnston's Islandview flock offering from Glenavy, were again a strong contender in the prices with their best selling at 350gns to Cameron Carson, Mainevalley, Ballymena, with others selling at 300gns to Colin Davidson, Congo, Dungannon, and 270gns to Paul Butler, Rathkenny, Ballymena. The shearling ewe section averaged £298 up £75 on the equivalent sale last year.

7

The senior ewes were topped at 330gns for the first prizewinners from the Johnston's flock and sold to Declan McGee, Cabra, Dungannon. The section average sale price came in at £242 per head. Angus Fleming from Ballymoney, brought out two strong ram lambs which were placed first and second and were winners of the Danske bank awards for the Reserve overall and Best Opposite sex to the Champion. They later sold for 420gns to Winston Harkness, Moneymore for the Reserve Champion, and 340gns to Tom O'Kane, Crebilly Farms Ltd, Ballymena, Trevor and Sharron Knox, Armoy, rounded off an excellent evening, selling a shearling ram at 360gns to Mr G. Heggarty, Omagh. This year's Autumn sale section of ram lambs recorded an average price of £399 per head. The N.I. Dorset Sheep Breeders Club are delighted with the roaring success of this their 25th Annual sale and would like to thank their sponsors Danske Bank, for their generous and continued sponsorship of this event and a special word of thanks to Peter Whiteside from Danske Bank for his attendance at the Ballymena Salesyard to present the prizes. This October also witnessed a milestone in the N.I. Dorset Clubs history with the Dorset sheep sales in Northern Ireland being held continuously for 40 years with J.A. McClelland (Auctioneers) Ltd, initially in the Market Square, Ballyclare and latterly in the Ballymena Mart but throughout this time the breed Auctioneer remains the same Mr Tom Symington. Tom's dedication to the Dorset breed throughout the forty years was marked by a special presentation of an engraved glass plaque by Club Chairman, Trevor Knox and Club Secretary, William Carson.
