The Gold Cup and how to enter. These Competitions were inaugurated in 1926, largely through the efforts of the President of the Dairy Shorthorn Association for that year, the late Mr JL Shirley: the necessary funds being subscribed by a number of firms and individuals in response to a personal appeal by Mr Shirley who was himself a generous contributor. The Council, therefore, directed that the trophies should be known as the “1926” Gold Challenge Cups. The Gold Cup is awarded annually to the Overall Winner of the Competition. So do you have any cows which meet the criteria for entry into the Annual Gold Cup Competition; To qualify a Cow must have: - produced an average of 6000 kg milk with a minimum total of 7% Fat and Protein combined average. - with a minimum average of 3.2% Protein over 3 lactations. - had 4 calvings, 3 of which are complete lactations (305 days or less) and must be within a period of 3 years and 4 calendar months, as printed on Cow Lactation Certificates from NMR or other Official Milk Recording Company. - the date of the last calf born must be in the year of the Gold Cup being held. The competition runs one year behind so for 2015 the date of the last calf must be born before 31st December 2014. Any entries where the calf is born after this date will be submitted for the next Competition if they meet the above criteria. - the closure date for entry is the end of May each year and the Winners are announced at the National Show in Cheshire in June. If the animal meets the criteria they will receive a Dipolma Certificate and Star on their pedigree. The Star Brood Cows list is displayed in the journal each year. If you wish to enter please complete the Gold Cup Diploma Entry Form which can be downloaded from the website or call the office and return it accompanied by the milking lactation records and a cheque for £5 & VAT, for each animal.

Do you have an idea for an invention that would change your life? Studio Lambert, an award-winning TV production company founded by Stephen Lambert, creator of Secret Millionaire and Undercover Boss are working on an exciting and innovative new series called Big Life Fix with a major broadcaster. In the programme, a team of expert engineers and designers would like to create bespoke inventions to transform your lives for the better. They would like members of the Shorthorn society to get involved. They would like to speak to members who think they could benefit from their help. Whether it’s a cutting-edge innovation that will help a busy family save time or an original invention that would help out with the running of your farm in some way. If you are interested in being considered for the programme, or if you would like some more information, please get in touch with the production team on: biglifefix@studiolambert.com or give the friendly team a call on 020 3040 6809. At this stage it would be a non-broadcast filming, with a view to producing a full series in the near future.

Herd Books

Shows 2014

If anyone is missing any old herd books then see below as Trisha Joseph on 07789 037176 or email: trishatwigs@yahoo.co.uk has a good selection which she would like to go to a good home. Amongst the books are:

This year we saw the new UK Dairy Day show take place in September at Telford. This show was a great success with a good number of cattle entries and good prize money. The stall was well supported too by its members. The feedback received from those who attended the show was that it was a very well organised event. Also a very successful show was the Royal Welsh show which was a shared event with the Beef Society.

"The Shorthorn Society's Grading Register" Vol 30 (1947), 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40 (1057) and "Coates herd book (new series)" Vol 94 (1948), 95, 96, 97, 99, 100, 103 (1957). Old registers and stud books from the 1940's and 50's.

Searchable Database A new option has been added to the on line searchable database. On the animal search page under sort order the option to sort by classification descending has been added so searching a particular herd eg Greaves with that option chosen will return all the animals in that herd with the highest classified at the top. The classification column has also been

added to the results page which is returned from a search of a particular bulls progeny but at the moment this column does not have a sort facility. We will update it with a sort facility in due course.
