Media Release: 24th May 2013

HSE Removes Final Barrier to Biomethane Injection Class Exemption for Oxygen Content to <1% CNG Services (CSL) is pleased with today's decision from the HSE to issue a class exemption to GS(M)R to allow network conveyance of gas with an oxygen content <= 1% (molar) at pressures up to 38 barg. This was the key remaining barrier to biomethane to grid projects in the UK. CSL MD John Baldwin said, "We appreciate the efforts of the HSE and the gas distribution companies, Wales and West Utilities in particular, in achieving this which is great news for the UK biomethane industry." The issue was one of the main topics of discussion at UK Biomethane Day 2013, and we know this will be welcome news to many who attended.

CSL would like to thank everyone who attended, exhibited and presented at UK Biomethane Day 2013 and making the day such a success. Co-hosted by CSL and the Renewable Energy Association, UK Biomethane Day aimed to bring everyone involved in the sector together to network and learn from industry experts about current projects within the UK. From the feedback received from many of the 215 attendees, it seems UKBD2013 has done just that! 100% would recommend UK Biomethane Day to someone else 98% would attend UK Biomethane Day again 100% felt they left the event more informed about the industry than when they arrived 94% felt UK Biomethane Day was significantly better than other, similar events The event started with the welcome of participants by the Chief Executive of Renewable Energy Association (REA). This followed by a general overview of the biomethane market from CNG Services Ltd John Baldwin.

The focus then moved to current UK biomethane injection to grid projects, with presentations from key people involved in those due to be completed in 2013-14:     

Rainbarrow Farm, the UK’s first commercial BtG project Minworth Stockport Vale Green Doncaster

Media Release: 24th May 2013 Finally, there was an explanation of the Green Gas Certification Scheme; a not-for-profit scheme that tracks commercial transactions of biomethane through the supply chain, and a European projects update, including BIOMASTER, Biomethane Regions and Green Gas Grids.

There were a large number of exhibitors covering all corners of the sector, including:       

Gas Grid Owners Gas quality monitoring and CV measurement instrumentation producers Clean-up and upgrading of biogas to biomethane Equipment suppliers Professional bodies Gas shippers EU Projects (e.g. BIOMASTER)

“As a relative newcomer to biomethane technology, I found the event highly detailed yet understandable and endlessly enjoyable.” Nick Gurney, NORSE “An excellent event bringing together the brightest and best from the industry.” Ian Roe, BIOMASTER “A wonderfully illuminating day with good breadth and begging a return next year!” Geoff Cooper-Smith, United Utilities “An informative event which had got me quickly up to speed with the very positive developments in the sector and an appreciation of the key issues still to be addressed.” Simon Griew, IGEM

UK Biomethane Day was set up as part of the Intelligent Energy Europe ‘GreenGasGrids’ project, which aims to support the biomethane market to help ‘starter’ countries establish the technology and thereby increase the European biomethane production. As part of this, a report on UK Biomethane Day 2013 has been produced, and can be viewed here: http://cngservices.co.uk/assets/Articles-and-Reports/GreenGasGrids-Report-on-UK-Biomethane-Day-2013.pdf
