PATRON: HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE OF WALES

NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 Celebrating 125 years of pedigree breeding! Dear Member I am sorry to announce the death of Mr Graham Roach, whose Prideaux herd is based at St Blazey, near Par in Cornwall. We send our sincere condolences to Graham’s family. It has been a very busy month for the Society, with some highlights that will surely be remembered for years to come, in particular the Herd Competition Winner’s Open Day at Great Lizzen, Cornwall, and our 125th Anniversary Dinner at Cirencester. All regional and club herd competitions have now been judged, and results are inside of those already made public. Congratulations to ALL participants – it is a valuable exercise to be able to benchmark your herd, and Also inside is the report of the Autumn Show & Sale, which was well attended and saw a generally good trade. When Council met in September they agreed a set of Show Rules which become applicable from 1st January 2017. They are printed inside, and please take note of these, especially if you are planning to exhibit cattle next year. We are very slowly continuing to build a list of members who are happy to receive the newsletter by e-mail, and if you would like to help us with postage costs please would you let us know – by telephone, e-mail, or by using the reply slip at the end of this newsletter. Thank you. With my best wishes, Caroline 1

CANCER RESEARCH RACE FOR LIFE The money is now all in and counted, and we are very pleased to have raised £737 for Cancer Research UK. Thank you to all those who were kind enough to sponsor us to take part in this valuable event.

AUTUMN SHOW & SALE Judge of the pedigree show was Mervyn Rowe, Tregondale, Menheniot whose male champion from a spread of bulls in four classes came from Robert Lee – Lumbylaw Horizon 15, an April 2014 born bull by Lumbylaw Halcyon 8, and out of Lumbylaw Snowdrop 125. Reserve male champion was North View Bond from Olly Brewin – a May 2014 born bull by Stretchford Hercules 2 and out of a home bred cow. Best bull judged on performance and inspection, and winning the Thornton Cup was Douglas Scott’s Grove Wellington 93 - by another Lumbylaw bull, Magnus 25, and out of second calver Grove Willowherb 81 – and in the top 1% of the breed for Breedplan Quality Beef Index. In the female section of the Show, the champion and reserve females, and also best pair, were from The Tully Partnership, Brixham, Devon – Z Waddeton Ann 157, a polled March 2014 born in-calf heifer by Z Eyton SAS Illya 1, and out of Waddeton Ann 69; and Waddeton Norman Countess 143, a June 2014 born incalf heifer and a grand-daughter of Z Eyton SAS Illya 1, and with Holcombe polled genetics on the dam’s side. The Ciba-Geigy Trophy was awarded to Mr R K Rundle whose Kestle herd won most combined points from the Society’s Spring and Autumn Sales. In the Sale ring, Mervyn Rowe’s first choice in bulls – Lumbylaw Horizon 15 – was also the highest priced, selling to Jane Archer, North Tuddenham, Norfolk for 6,800 gns. Next highest was for Richard & Shirley Harvey’s Z Sexton Senator 6, which sold to Andrew Watkins, Kentchurch, Herefordshire for 3,600 gns. Enterprise Avanti from David Irving, Thornhill, Dumfries, sold to Colin Edwards, Tavistock, Devon for 3,000 gns. Highest priced shown heifer was the female champion Z Waddeton Ann 157, which sold to Tom Earl, Lerryn, Cornwall for 2,400 gns. The same buyer also 2

bought heifers from the Welland Valley and Kestle herds. Next highest price was 2,300 gns for the reserve female champion Waddeton Norman Countess 143, which sold to Richard Linnell, Daventry, Northants. The same buyer also acquired Knowlhill Melise 57 from the Claridge family, Buckinghamshire for 1,900 gns. There followed the Reduction Sale of the Lumbylaw herd on behalf of Robert Lee comprising 32 cows with calves at foot, 5 cows without calves, and 6 in-calf heifers. The herd has recently been judged second out of 20 in the Society’s National Herd Competition, and the quality of these cattle was a reflection of this high performing herd which has used stock bulls from the Welland Valley, Sexton, Edmeston, Trewint, Waddeton and Enterprise herds during the past 25 years. This was an opportunity for pedigree breeders to acquire some well selected additions to their bloodlines; and for others to build numbers into new and existing herds. Top prices were for Lumbylaw Kay 63, a 2010-born cow by Welland Valley Hanbury 10, with bull calf, selling to Andrew McCammond, Templepatrick, Northern Ireland for 3,400 gns. Next highest was 3,150 gns for Lumbylaw Belle 25, a 2012-born cow with pedigree heifer calf, selling to Colin Edwards, Tavistock, Devon. Consignments topping at 3,100 gns were acquired by Tom Earl, Lerryn, Cornwall; at 2,700 gns by Tim Trudgeon, Helston, Cornwall; and at 2,450 gns by Jackamax Ltd, Truro, Cornwall. Commenting on the sale, auctioneer Mark Bromell from Kivells said that it had been “A selective bull trade, but with strong demand for the best; and a fantastic trade for the reduction sale.” THE SHOW BULLS Class 1 1st A R Lee nd 2 O Brewin rd 3 R K Rundle Class 2 1st O Brewin nd 2 W H D Scott rd 3 D L Irving Class 3 1st Mells Park Trust nd 2 The Tully Partnership rd 3 R K Rundle

HERD COMPETITION WINNERS OPEN DAY Great Lizzen, Lansallos, Looe, Cornwall What a superb treat and privilege it was to visit Great Lizzen, and to see how the judges of this year’s Competition unreservedly found their winner here! Many times during the afternoon the usual buzz of chatter on the trailers quietened as we were all mesmerized by the quality of the cattle in front of us. John & Jenny Rowe together with daughter Kate and son Jonathan run a 500 acre farm which has been in the family since 1932. Their Raphael herd of pedigree South Devons was established 30 years ago and now comprises 80 suckler cows, spring-calved and housed during the winter. Apart from the purchase of new bulls, the herd is closed and all female replacements are homebred – which is one of its great strengths. The Open Day was held on a sunny afternoon at the end of September, and it attracted over 100 visitors to see just what it takes to win this most prestigious competition. Guests were certainly not disappointed – the cattle and the scenery were quite breath-taking, with views westwards to the Lizard Peninsula and eastwards to Start Point. 10

The first group of cows set the tone for the rest of the afternoon – a very strong bunch of deep-bodied beefy cows, wide and long, and with well grown spring-born calves running at foot. Next were the two-year old heifers, all with matching evenness, with good bone and conformation, and none showing any weakness. The winning heifer in the competition – Raphael Fossil 7 – came from within this bunch, and the comment was made that each of these females could have been contenders for the title The steers out on grass looked very close to being ready, although the majority are destined for the Christmas market. Well grown with plenty of fleshing and shape, the buyer of these animals will certainly have a high quality product to offer his customers. The first of the two current stock bulls, Grove Brutus 116, was placed second best bull in the competition, and, together with recently departed herd sire Kestle Leo 4, has really left a strong stamp in this herd. The second herd sire, Carzise Bentley 4, was a previous breed champion at the Royal Cornwall Show when shown as a yearling, and has proven to be an easy calving bull used on heifers as well as cows within the Raphael herd. A further group of cows with their calves gleamed in the autumn sunshine, and visitors were hugely impressed by the maternal strengths of these animals, obviously producing plentiful milk from the abundant grass. It is quite unusual for a first calving cow to be judged the best across all the herds, and therefore a fair mark of the standards of this herd to produce Raphael Diamond 7, a 2013-born young cow, who beat off competitors to be named Best Cow. Overlooking the sea were the groups of yearling heifers, in-calf heifers, and first calvers – all showing great breed characteristics and clear potential to continue the success of this herd in producing quality suckler replacements and finished beef. After a lavish Cornish tea, Chairman Mark Thomas congratulated the Rowes for their success, and led a round of applause at the end of the afternoon. The judges spoke of their travels and expressed their gratitude to all the entrants of the Competition for their hospitality during the 2,000 mile journey. This visit will be one to remember, and we offer our sincere congratulations and thanks to the Rowe family for putting on such a splendid afternoon. 11

SHOW RULES TO BE APPLICABLE FROM 1ST JANUARY 2017

These rules have been adopted by Council, and anyone who is considering showing or who is a Society judge is asked to make themselves aware. 1

South Devon breeders must read and comply with the rules and regulations laid down by the individual Show Societies, both before entering and at the Show; and these must take priority over the requirements of the South Devon Herd Book Society (SDHBS), but if a subject is not mentioned then the SDHBS rules will apply. 14

2 No ‘faking’ is allowed by most Show Societies. This means that there must be no tampering with their animals by any exhibitor to conceal defects, including deliberately hiding white hair. 3 All animals over six months of age entered for the classes must wear bulldog clips in their noses (nose rings in bulls fulfill this requirement) when not stalled from the time of offloading to the time of loading back on to cattle transport. This does not apply to calves at foot shown with their dams, but does apply to calves over six months of age entered for a calf class. 4 Exhibitors must not enter or bring to show animals which have been bred by the person judging the South Devon classes at that show. If an animal is then forwarded to the judge it shall remain unplaced. It would be unwise also to enter or bring an animal bred by the interbreed judge, although that is outside the SDHBS’ jurisdiction. 5 Exhibitors are expected to try to be reasonably smartly turned out, eg wearing a tie and having their white coat buttoned up, both during judging and in the Grand Parade. 6 The use of mobile phones for any purposes is not permitted in the show ring. 7 Any non-compliance with these rules may be reported by other exhibitors to the stewards, who in turn must report the complaint to the Chief Cattle Steward. If after investigation the complaint is upheld, the animal may be disqualified. 8 The Judge’s decision is final.

AHDB PROJECT MANAGING REPLACEMENT HEIFERS A farm walk was recently held at Arncliffe Farms, Ingleby Cross, Northallerton, Yorkshire by kind invitation of Sir John and Lady Venetia Bell and son Jack, to reveal some of the findings of the AHDB project into calving heifers at two years of age. This has proved to be a successful management change for the Bells, and the proof is in seeing both the heifers and their progeny – uniform bunches of cattle with growthy calves. It was another opportunity to show what a strong commercial performer the South Devon breed is; and also to demonstrate the impressive docility of the 15 cattle to visitors.

Led by Venetia’s sister Viv Perry from the University of Nottingham, the project has involved monitoring daily liveweight gain (DLWG), alongside recording birthweights and weaning weights. The fundamental key to success is that heifers are served at 65% of their mature cow weight, or 450 kg, and they tend to come from the earlier born spring calves and to get in calf easily. To achieve the 65% of mature weight at 15 months the heifers need to hit 1 kg DLWG. They run with a ‘0’ myostatin bull selected for easy calving EBVs, for seven weeks after 1st June, and the heifers continue to be kept separate as a batch. Once housed in the autumn, first and second-calving heifers are fed grass silage, then good quality straw with molassed protein liquid feed on top alongside good-quality hay. A body condition score of 2.5 to 3 is maintained, with a target of 85% of mature weight by second breeding. Calves weigh a little less than those born to cows, at around 40 kg. They are creep-fed six to eight weeks prior to housing. The results are a tighter calving pattern, an increased herd size of 20%, improved gross margins, improved fertility, efficient feed conversion, and less need for shed space.

NATIONAL SHOW 2017 The arrangements for next year’s National Show which is to be held at the Royal Cornwall are now underway, and the Working Group (Caroline, Margaret Eustice, Philip Laity, Adrian Rundle, and Mark Thomas) have met twice to outline the broad plans, and to draw up a list of potential sponsors. More information will be published in future newsletters, but please note the dates of the show in your diary now – Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th June. We hope to have up to 140 cattle entered, which will be a new record for the National Show, and what a spectacle it will make!

STEAK CHALLENGE You may have read in a recent edition of the Daily Telegraph a report on the ‘World Steak Challenge’ which took place in London with nine judges tasting 16

steaks from 13 breeds, from 17 countries. Gold-winning steaks included one from Wales – a South Devon crossbred, fed on grass for 12 months, finished on grass and maize silage with forage roots. Aged 27 months and dry aged, then vacuum packed. The steak was entered by Jessica Edwards and had been prepared by Two Sisters. To quote the Telegraph report: “More than just aesthetics, grass fed animals are reckoned to be more sustainable than their cornfed, indoor reared equivalents, and the meat is higher in healthy omega 3 fatty acids.” Good publicity!

SOUTH DEVON INFUSION Interesting news from John & Sue Harvey in Australia, where Wagyu beef is setting a trend in some quarters: “Torr Down Marvel 3, a 10-year old homozygous polled bull, bred and owned by John & Sue Harvey of Trentham, Victoria, has been sold to two prominent Red Wagyu breeders. Selected primarily for his polling genetics, he will also offer the attributes of faster growth, excellent carcase specifications especially eye muscle, together with his outstanding docility and the breed’s renowned maternal traits. Red Wagyu originated from the Japanese island of Akaushi. Numerous samples of DNA collected from Torr Down polled animals leads to the conclusion that, quote “South Devons contributed to the formation of the breed Akaushi” now known as Red Wagyu in Australia. In type there is a definite similarity between the two breeds, both marbling well when finished on grass at 2 to 2 ½ years of age; unlike the Black Wagyu which require grain feeding for 300-400 days. The Red Wagyu breed is popular in South America where red cattle are preferred. The new owners of Marvel hope to send semen collected from him to their Red Wagyu contacts over there. Torr Down Marvel 3 goes in for semen collection for the second time in his life, having had semen collected in 2013 primarily for the UK, New Zealand and home markets.” 17

125TH CELEBRATIONS It was a lovely evening held at the Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel last week, which was attended by 109 members and guests. We enjoyed an excellent roast beef dinner, followed by a few words from your Breed Secretary; then an interesting insight into the Society’s first President who David Thomas met as a boy; and one or two stories told by our Chairman which were far better than anything you read in the ‘And Finally’ bit of the newsletter! We were also shown a DVD of the 125th celebrations at the Royal Cornwall Show earlier this year, which featured a pageant of South Devons and their development over several decades as portrayed by a cast of costumed South Devon breeders, plaits and all! It was a great pleasure to be able to announce the imminent publication of the first volume of Colin Pearse’s book which will be a collection of South Devon archive material, and a ‘taster’ was provided to those present who were given a copy of the book cover. Please let us know if you are interested in purchasing a copy (although we do not yet know the exact cost), and you will then be one of the first to receive one.

AND FINALLY … “If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all the money to the church, would that get me to Heaven?” the minister asked his Sunday School class. “NO!” the children all answered. He tried again, “if I cleaned the church every day, mowed the grass, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?” Again the answer was “NO!” “Well then,” he went on, “if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my wife, would that get me into Heaven?” Once more, “NO!” “Well,” he continued, “then how can I get into Heaven?” A five-year old boy shouted out “You’ve got to be dead!”
