Dear Member I am very sorry to report the death of Mr Phil Eustice, the Trevowah herd, Newquay, Cornwall following a farm accident. Phil will be remembered by many South Devon breeders, especially from the Royal Cornwall Show where he has enjoyed significant show successes, including winning Breed Champion in 2013 with Hopton Maximus 2, and then going on to take Supreme Interbreed Champion which is a rare achievement indeed. Our most sincere condolences to wife Sally and son Tim, and to all the family. The Spring Show & Sale was an encouraging boost, I am delighted to say, with good results for most vendors. What was particularly pleasing was the general improvement in quality of cattle presented, which duly brought along the buyers. We had a headline price of 9,600 guineas, just short of the breed record for a polled bull, and congratulations go to Roden Livestock (Connor & Finn Whitehead, and Richard Hartshorn) for bringing out this Male and Polled Champion who was also the best on performance and inspection. Show results and prices are inside. The Annual General Meeting the night before was well attended, and was a happy occasion with some positive matters raised by members to take forward by Council. Award winners are listed in the newsletter. One lovely part of the AGM proceedings was the recognition of Liz’s 30 years with the Society this year; and she was presented with a painting in thanks for her loyalty and service. Our new Society President is Mr Mark Thomas, Treguddick, Launceston, Cornwall, and he and Jenny are looking forward to a busy year travelling around the country meeting members at shows and other events. We wish them a very enjoyable time, and congratulate Mark on reaching this pinnacle within the Society. The Midland Club Sale catalogue is in the process of being put together now, and the sale will be held at Rugby Market, Stoneleigh on Saturday 28th April. Thank you to all those members who have already returned forms to allow us to continue to publish their details in our publications, in compliance with new data protection legislation, and we enclose another copy for completion and return as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Apologies for any duplication – it is easier for us at the moment to send a copy to everyone! 2

April looks to be a particularly busy month in the office, but please bear with us and we are still here to help. Statements are enclosed as appropriate, and we would be grateful if you would settle any overdue accounts as soon as possible to avoid any unnecessary chasing. My best wishes, Caroline

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting was held at the Devon Hotel the evening prior to the Sale, and once again was well attended. Bob Bostelmann chaired the meeting and he began by welcoming Philip Wolfgang from Michelmores, the Society’s Solicitor. The 2017 accounts were adopted, and Wortham Jaques re-appointed as Society Accountants for 2018. The Council Resolution to amend Article 57 was unanimously adopted; which means that Council reserve the right to call for an audit of accounts if and when they so choose rather than it be an annual requirement. The presentation of the Herd Competition and Society Awards were made by retiring President Lionel Pascoe, as follows: The Wakeham Memorial Perpetual Challenge Cup to the overall winners of the Herd Competition, Julian & Sara White The Cecil Harvey Shield for the best herd of cows, Julian & Sara White The Tregerrick Perpetual Trophy for the best stock bull, Bill & Suzanne Haraper The Society Cup for the best young stock, Julian & Sara White The Angus Loggie Memorial Trophy to the member gaining the most points in the Herd Competition, but not having won the Competition nor received this trophy previously, Lionel Pascoe The Irving Enterprise Trophy for the highest placed herd with 20 cows or fewer, Lionel Pascoe The Bill Major Trophy for the best three cows sired by the same bull, George & Ann Dart The Edmeston Hilda Cup for the best cow, Douglas Scott 3

The HSBC Trophy for the best herd judged on inspection and performance, George & Ann Dart The Cilgwrrwg Trophy for the best homebred polled animal, Richard Hartshorn The Erme Cup for the best heifer under two years old, Julian & Sara White The Coronation Trophy for the most points at shows in 2017, Richard Hartshorn The Bull of the Year for the most bull points at shows in 2017, Bill & Suzanne Harper The President’s Cup for Junior Bull of the Year, Mells Park Trust The Female of the Year for the most female points at shows in 2017, Richard Hartshorn Ian Rounsevell then made the presentation of Linda’s Trophy to the member nominated to have made a significant contribution to Breed Promotion during 2017, which was judged by Ian, the President, and the Secretary. They had come to the unanimous decision that the award be made to Richard Hartshorn who is recognized for his exceptional amount of work to raise the breed profile both nationally and within the Wales & West Midlands region. Mark Thomas was proposed and seconded as the new President by Richard Harvey and Ann Brooks; and he received the Badge and Picture from Lionel Pascoe. Lionel thanked the Society for the privilege of being its President for 2017 and said how much he and Jane had enjoyed it. He wished Mark and Jenny as much pleasure during the coming year as Mark carries out his presidential duties. A number of Members Suggestions were received, and they will be now be considered by Council and committees, and the Chairmen thanked those members for their contributions. Before closing the meeting, Bob said he had a very special presentation to make to Liz, who in May marks her 30 years with the Society. I don’t believe there are many who can say they had been in the same employment for that length of time but Liz still enjoys the variety of work that the Society brings, and more so, the many members who give us so much pleasure and support! (It would not be truthful of me, though, to say that there are never any moments when we are a little exasperated – but they are few and far between, thankfully). Bob said that Liz had initially been taken on for a month’s trial, and that he was pleased to be able 4

now to confirm her appointment! Well done, Liz, from all of us. The AGM Dinner was, as usual at this venue, very enjoyable and well served. The evening was rounded off by the Secret Raffle which was conducted by John Wakeham with his usual flair, and ‘adjudicated’ by Bob Bostelmann. One draw from the Club account was drawn, and won by Henry Webber from the Skreens herd, Chelmsford, Essex.

SPRING SHOW & SALE There was strong demand for South Devons at the recent Spring Show & Sale held at Exeter Livestock Market, with some keen bidding for the best bulls that saw the top price exceed £10,000. A good selection of 32 bulls and 13 breeding females were forward, with about 90% of the cattle finding new homes, mainly in the South West. We are most grateful to Mark Bromell and the team at Kivells for doing their utmost to ensure the success of the Sale. Four bulls were rejected at inspection: two for locomotion, one with a deformed foot, and one for testicles. Generally the inspector commented on a better run of bulls than last Spring.

AND FINALLY … After his return from Rome, Will couldn’t find his luggage in the airport baggage area. He went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that his bags hadn’t shown up on the carousel. She smiled and told him not to worry because they were trained professionals and he was in good hands. Then she asked Will, “Has your plane arrived yet?” THE STORY OF EVERYBODY This is the story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody could do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
