Linda’s Trophy

16

Dear Member I write this March newsletter at home, as the snow continues to accumulate outside, and it’s several degrees below zero. Hardly springtime yet, and I hope that you and your livestock are safe and warm. I am sorry to report the death of Mr Glen Bryant. Glen was a very loyal supporter of the breed, and of the Truro Club, and his kindness and generosity will be remembered by many. Our condolences to his widow Margaret and all his family. Your AGM booklet with abbreviated accounts is with this newsletter, and we hope to see many of you on 27th March. You will see that Council are putting forward a Special Resolution concerning the Accounts. It is no longer a legal requirement for a business of our size to have their accounts audited, so Council are taking the opportunity now to amend the Articles so that the Society has more flexibility and can choose whether or not to elect for an audit of the accounts which will continue to be professionally prepared. 1

If you are planning to come to the AGM (27th March) and would like to stay for Dinner please let us have your menu choices as soon as you can. There are a few hotel rooms still available but we shan’t be able to hold the reservation for much longer so do let us know if you would like to take one. Enclosed with this newsletter is an important letter from your Chairman Bob Bostelmann on behalf of Council and I would ask you to give it your due consideration. Other TB information is inside. Also enclosed is an important form requesting your express permission concerning our use of your contact details, under the new data protection legislation due to come into force in May. We are required to record this permission in order to publish your address in, for example, the Journal. Because of insufficient time to collect replies from the majority of members before the Journal goes to print, Council have agreed not to include the Members List this time – so if you use your Journal as a telephone directory, make sure you have a copy of last year’s to hand! May I encourage you to send in a nomination for Linda’s Trophy – there are plenty of worthy candidates, and it should only take a few minutes of your time. The newly appointed Council representatives to start office after the AGM are listed below. Please note, there remains a vacancy in Region 7 (the North), and another nomination form is enclosed. It really is important that the region is fully represented in the governance of the Society so I would encourage you to submit a nomination. Members elected by Council to the sub-committees are also below. We look forward to seeing you when spring finally arrives! My best wishes

Caroline

TB RESEARCH IN BEEF GENETICS You may be aware of some useful genetic research undertaken for the dairy sector into TB resistance, which resulted in a new genetic index being published to identify bloodlines that are more resistant to TB in dairy cattle. Funding has now been granted for similar research in the beef sector, and a two-year study has begun. Of course we cannot expect this to be the ‘silver bullet’, but it might well be another long-term tool in the fight to eradicate TB. 7

CONSULTATION ON BADGER CONTROL POLICY Defra is requesting views on proposals to introduce licensed badger control to prevent the spread of TB in the Low Risk Area, where disease is identified in the badger population to stop the disease spreading further. There are two questionnaires where you can make a response: https://consult.defra.gov.uk/bovine-tb/badger-control-in-low-risk-areaengland, and https://consult.defra.gov.uk/bovine-tb/bovine-tb/bovine-tbbadger-control-areas

BOVINE TB STRATEGY REVIEW Defra are running a review into their TB strategy which will last until September, and one of the things they will be considering is cattle vaccination as well as genetic resistance.

GRANT SCHEME OPPORTUNITIES There is an opportunity to apply for small capital grants under the RDPE Countryside Productivity Small Grant scheme. This provides funding for farmers to purchase equipment to improve the productivity of their farm and targets investment at specific pieces of agricultural equipment. In this grant round, the equipment includes badger proof feed troughs and badger proof lick holders. There is other equipment on the list of eligible items that may also be used for other purposes, including mobile and fixed cattle crush and other handling systems. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/countryside-productivity-scheme The deadline for applications is midday on 14th March.

AND FINALLY … Father John woke up on Sunday morning and realised, because it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, that he just had to play golf. So … he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and persuaded him to say Mass for him that day. As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father John headed out of town to a golf course about 40 miles away. This way he knew he wouldn’t accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on his first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church. At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, “You’re not going to let him get away with this, are you?” The Lord sighed, and said, “I guess not.” Just then, Father John hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. It was a 420 yard hole in one! St Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and said, “Why did you let him do that?” The Lord smiled and replied, “Who’s he going to tell?”
