Dear Member I am sorry to report the death of Mr Peter Harvey, former owner of the Pamflete herd, Holbeton, South Devon who passed away in January. More recently we have also sadly lost two other members – Mr Tom Baker, the Gawney herd, Lutterworth, Leicestershire; and just this last weekend, Mr David Bowley, the Ridgemere herd, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. Our sincere condolences to all the families. On a much happier note I am delighted to tell you that entries for the National Show at the Royal Bath & West have closed at a total of 113! This will make a huge spectacle, and do please come and support the exhibitors if you can. More details are inside, and please would you let us have your bookings for the barbecue and awards dinner if you are planning to come. We have just returned from the Midland Club Sale at Stratford, and it was a very buoyant occasion with a total clearance of animals, and a top price of 6,400 guineas. Not all buyers were successful, however, and it is a good sign of the continuing appetite across the country for good quality cattle. The pre-sale supper was a happy social occasion, with excellent South Devon beef and great company. We are now at the start of the Show season, and so far there is generally an very good level of entries for the first major shows. They are an important shop window for the breed, as well as being the more direct opportunity to advertise herds. If you are new to showing and would like to dip your toe in the water, please let either the office or your regional committee know. From time to time show preparation days are held within regions, and members are very welcome to glean tips from more experienced showing breeders. As important are the technical events held around the country, and the NBA’s Beef Expo at York is the first on the calendar. There will be a good South Devon emphasis, with crossbred and pedigree cattle on the Society stand, and also featuring as exhibits in other parts of the Expo, so please come and support your breed if you can on Thursday 21st May at York Livestock Market. The Livestock Event at the NEC is also not far away, and entries are still open for a few more weeks – details inside. Thankfully by the time of the next newsletter the election will be over – but I thought you might like the ‘and finally’ on this particular occasion! With my best wishes, Caroline 2

RURAL FUEL REBATE SCHEME It is possible that you, or someone you know, might be able to take advantage of a Fuel Rebate Scheme that is being rolled out to 17 areas in Scotland and England from 31st May. SOUTH DEVON GENOMIC PREDICTOR A continuing plea for help! Thank you to those who have already let me know what your semen flask contains. We have so far identified 52 AI sires that will contribute to the ‘base population’ needed. This is a good start, but only about 10% of the target figure, so please would you let us know if you have any semen in a flask. We only need one straw per bull to be able to capture the DNA. AI bulls are of particular interest because they are likely to have the highest accuracy figures through their wider use. The next step will be to look at records of stock bulls that can be tested using the new ‘low density’ chip test (GGP-LD). It is important that we do not miss anything before it might go off the farm, and Liz and I will be starting to work on this shortly. As you are aware, any bulls being registered as pedigree are all tested against this chip test, but their levels of recording accuracy will not be sufficiently high yet to be able to add them to the base population. In time, and especially if they are used more widely, they will contribute valuable data. Your help to capture the DNA of older bulls is crucial to speed up the process of building the South Devon genomic predictor. Thank you!

NATIONAL YOUNG SHOW STARS THREE COUNTIES SHOWGROUND, MALVERN This new event attracted more than 20 teams to take part in demonstrating, over the course of two days, their skills in show preparation and presentation, and the teams were sponsored by most of the major beef breeds. The South Devon team comprised Lucy Gould (Mells Park), Connor and Fin Whitehead (Telford), with two heifers loaned by Richard Hartshorn. Richard also provided the transport and other ‘back-up’ support. The stand they put up looked very professional, with a clear message to promote South Devons; and their preparation of the cattle was excellent. In the show ring Lucy and Connor paraded and presented the heifers very well; and Fin answered questions from the commentator very competently. All in all it was a great event to encourage youngsters, and the team were a full credit to the breed, the Society and to themselves. Well done!

AND FINALLY … (thanks to the RASE newsletter for this one)

While stitching a cut on the hand of a 75 year old farmer, the doctor struck up a conversation with him. Eventually the topic got around to politicians and their role as our leaders. The old farmer said, “Well, as I see it, most politicians are post tortoises.’ Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post tortoise was. The farmer said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise.” 15

The farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain, ‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself; he doesn’t belong up there; he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there; he’s elevated beyond his ability to function; and you just wonder what kind of idiot put him up there to begin with!’
