AUTUMN 2018 NEWSLETTER Fantastic Result at National Young Stars ! A big congratulations to our National Young Stars teams. The Dairy Teams had to battle it out in areas of stock judging, public speaking, marketing, clipping and presentation, ring craft and overall team work skills over two days. In a very tight and competitive competition we are pleased to report that 1st place went to our Shorthorn team called “Roan Rangers” comprising of Hannah Morgan, Bob Crank & Florence Mannerings, winning a trip to The European Show, Libramont. The Shorthorn team “Red Revolution” Anna Crank, David Madeley & Naomi Bandd took a respectable 3rd place. Well done to all the competitors who all did a fabulous job at showing the breed, one outside commentator stating “Such a professional approach from the teams. Balmoral Show Interbreed Supreme Champion Ballytrain Bloom 30 from James Lambe & family Ballytrain Bloom 30 is a home-bred EX91-rated senior cow which calved her fourth in January and is currently yielding 45kg per day, with a projected yield of 10,500kg. Paraded by Georgia Kerr one of 100 Dairy Shorthorns run by James Lambe, Ballytrain Bloom 30 has done well at Tullamore Show, standing champion last year as well as reserve the year before. “She's just world class and the most outstanding Shorthorn I've ever seen, but you really need to see her on the move to appreciate her," said interbreed judge, Lisa Window-Walker, who runs the 90-cow Hunnington Ayrshire herd. "The main thing is she's stylish but she's also full of quality and dairy character, with a great openness of rib and rear udder attachment."
BCMS—Removal of sho (Shorthorn) breed code The Society has recently been in contact with BCMS after it came to our attention that the SHO (Shorthorn) code had been removed from their database. It seems that a new committee called FAnGR have made this decision without consulting the breed societies. The response from BCMS was:Good afternoon Ros As discussed the decision to remove the catch-all Shorthorn breed code was made following consideration by the Farm Animal Genetic Resources Committee (FAnGR) who provide advice to Defra and the devolved administrations on all issues relating to farm animal genetic resources. Farmers registering shorthorn cattle need to do so using an available breed code that best matches the primary intended purpose of the animal in question. Farmers concerned about the removal of the Shorthorn breed code should contact FAnGR. Paperless Registration update As from January 2019 you will need to provide us with an email address to receive your pedigree certificates via email along with the invoice at the end of the month, rather than receiving posted certificates. The new procedure will reduce the registration fee by £2 /€2 per registration. For those who we do not have an email address your certificates and invoice will continue to be posted and the fees remain the same. If you wish to go paperless please advise Claire of your email address. The registrations can continue to be submitted in the same way however if you wish to be set up to be able to do them online via the website please contact Claire at the office. If you do require a hard copy of a particular certificate to be printed this can be requested from Claire for a fee of £2/€2 & vat per certificate. Please call if you have any questions.
Transfers Please advise us of any new animals into your herd, your records will be updated and a new certificate will be emailed or a paper copy for £2 per animal.
AGM & Judging Day A big thank you for a fabulous day held at the Cotonhall Herd on behalf of R kite and his family along with Judge Paul Harrison. The AGM & Judging day were a great success with many breeders attending. Next years venue will also include the Young Members Weekend with lots of activities to take part in. The hosts will be Mr & Mrs Norbury of the Broadlane Herd in June 2019, exact date to be confirmed. Venue: Broad Lane Farm, Sproston Holmes Chapel, Crewe, Cheshire, CW4 7LT. 2019 World Shorthorn Conference - Intinerary
“Meating the Future” The Australian Shorthorn Family invites you to the 2019 World Conference & Tour The Pre-Conference tour starts Monday 23rd September 2019 with 3 nights in Adelaide, during this time you will view Bayview Stud, Bundaleer Stud & Carlton Stud. While in SA the home of some of Australia’s best wine, you will visit one of the oldest & best wineries, Yalumba (Est 1849) From here you will travel to Mt Gambier via Belmore Stud. You will be spending 2 nights in Mt Gambier visiting Shepherd’s Noola Stud & the famous Blue Lakes at Mt Gambier. The tour will then proceed to Ballarat Victoria, visiting the Eloora Stud & Rockgrove Stud. Following this will be the Royal Melbourne Show, with the Shorthorn judging taking place Sunday September 29th 2019. 2 dairy herds in the Gippsland district will be visited, followed by a visit to the world-famous Phillip Island Penguin Parade. From Melbourne we travel to Griffith (NSW) viewing a restored heritage wool shed at the Tataila Stud near Echuca on the Murray River. Near Griffith we will visit a JBS feedlot where the Thousand Guineas Shorthorns are fed. We then travel to Wagga Wagga via Spry’s Stud where the 2 day conference (3rd & 4th October 2019) will be held at the Charles Sturt University. With ‘Meating the Future’ as our theme, Excellent speakers & lively (we hope) discussions & a visit to the University Veterinary School being organised. Following Wagga Wagga the post conference tour will feature The Shorthorn Youth Expo being held in Dubbo which includes their annual Heifer Show. Other Studs are then visited on the way to Sydney via Coonabarabran & Tamworth. The tour will conclude with a Sydney Harbour cruise & final dinner on Thursday 10th October 2019. A further post conference tour will follow in Tasmania for 4 nights. A more detailed itinerary will follow soon.

Invoices
In order to make your 2019 membership payment easier please can we ask that you set up a standing order, if you haven't already done so. You can call the office to obtain a form to complete and return to us. This will then be sent to your bank ready to start in 2019. Memberships must be paid in order to be able to register your cattle.
Hopefully everyone will have seen the new monthly style invoices, with all the payment methods are detailed.

If you are unhappy with your details being shared please email or contact the office and we will update your records.
Please note: on the Payment Terms, it states that a 2% monthly charge may be incurred if payment is not received within 30 days of the date of the invoice. For those of you who have a large invoice to pay you may wish to pay in instalments, if so please call the office to discuss.

Diplomas & The Gold Cup To qualify for the Gold Cup Competition and a Diploma a Cow must have produced an average of 6000 kg with a minimum total of 7% Fat and Protein combined average and a minimum average of 3.2% Protein over 3 lactations. The Competition will be judged on the highest total weight of fat & Protein over 3 lactations (305 days or less) within a period of 3 years and 4 calendar months, as printed on Cow Lactation Certificates from NMR or other Official Milk Recording Company. If the animal meets the criteria they will receive a Diploma Certificate and a Star on their pedigree. The “Star Brood Cows” list is displayed in the journal each year. To enter please find the entry form on the Website along with the criteria which the cow must meet or call the office for a printed copy. The forms must be sent to the office accompanied by the milking lactation records. The fee is £5 + VAT(£6) per animal. These competitions were inaugurated in 1926, largely through the efforts of the President of the Dairy Shorthorn Association for that year, the late Mr J L Shirley: the necessary funds being subscribed by a number of firms and individuals in response to a personal appeal by Mr Shirley who was himself a generous contributor. The Council, therefore, directed that the trophies should be known as the “1926” Gold Challenge Cups. The closure date for entries is the end of May 2019. The Gold Cup will be awarded annually to the Overall Winner of the Competition at the National Show.

Selection Criteria for SSUK Genetics Please see below the bull selection criteria which all bulls that are chosen by SSUK have to meet, if you think you have a bull which is suitable then please email the details to Claire ready for the next SSUK meeting in November. SSUK was established to provide top class Dairy Shorthorn genetics for use in the dairy herd. The Directors meet 3 times a year to consider any prospective young bulls which may be suitable for semen collection. The minimum selection criteria are that the dam has to be classified VG or EX and have at least one production index of 110 or greater. The bull will also inspected by the Directors to ensure he is of suitable conformation. Other factors such as butterfat and protein percentage, genetic indexes of parents, and pedigree are all considered before a bull is accepted for collection by SSUK. The stringent selection process has proved to be an extremely reliable measure of a young bull’s expected genetic potential.
Sexed Semen We are currently in the process of obtaining Sexed semen from a Australian bull Glenbrook Queens Prince. If this is something you would be interested purchasing please can you inform the office so we can place your name on our provisional orders list as the demand for sexed semen is high.
