Welcome to WAGS 2018 Richard Wanless, Chairman of Policy Committee A warm welcome to you all to another WAGS GANG SHOW. After 46 years as stage director for WAGS it has been a very large part of my life and very difficult to walk away from. Now as chairman I seem to be more involved than ever and very much enjoying it. I would like to thank all the production team for their hard work and dedication throughout the year, also all the cast members for their commitment and enthusiasm during the rehearsals. Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the show.
Russ Smith, Producer Our cast have been busy learning routines and songs since October to put on another show full of song, dance and comedy. It is great to see the progress and confidence they gain every week. I’m sure you will agree with that. Finally, a personal thanks to Sara, Hannah, Neil, Holly, Sarah, Paul and Nigel, who have got me through another year. Message from County Commissioner Welcome to WAGS 2018. A recipe for Scouting. Take a group of young people, add some dedicated adults and mix well with a challenging and exciting programme and what do you get – Skills for Life! There are many exciting things happening around the County to help our young people grow and mature into responsible citizens. Gang Show is just one of them. This evening you will see some of the Gang front and centre and others appearing in the back row. For all of them it will have been a journey (sorry for the clichÊ), learning new skills, working as a team, having the confidence to step onto stage, making new friends, getting frustrated at times, but hopefully this week walking a little taller knowing that they have been part of a fantastic event. Of course, this does not happen without lots of support from a vast team behind the scenes – a huge thank you to them. I hope that you enjoy the show and have a fun evening. Best wishes, Nigel Hailey County Commissioner, Warwickshire Scouts.

30 Years of Life-Changing Devotion We are delighted to have been chosen as the WAGs charity for 2018, particularly because this year sees us proudly celebrating our 30th anniversary. Over the years the work that we have carried out has transformed the lives of thousands of adults and children with disabilities. In addition to our assistance dog partnerships, Dogs for Good has led the way in developing how dogs can help people with additional needs. In 2004, we introduced the first assistance dogs for children to the UK, the first dogs being trained to support children with physical disabilities and shortly afterwards we developed our service for children with autism. Most recently, we have worked in collaboration with Alzheimer Scotland to train dementia assistance dogs.
8
In order to help more people and recognising that not everyone is able to benefit from the help of a dog 24:7, the charity now trains activity and therapy dogs to work with specialist handlers in settings such as hospitals, schools and social care settings. Through this work, we support people with a wide range of conditions including learning disabilities, dementia, physical disabilities and autism. Dogs for Good also runs Family Dog workshops to provide advice and support to help families with a child with autism get the most out of their relationship with their pet dog. Dogs for Good (formerly Dogs for the Disabled) was the brainchild of Kenilworth resident and founder, Frances Hay, herself disabled and a lifelong animal lover and dog owner. She recognised that the strong bond she enjoyed with her own dogs helped in many ways to maintain her independence and also, that her dog was able to carry out small but vitally important tasks for her such as picking up dropped items and helping to steady her while walking and balance her getting up from a seated position.
We’re celebrating 30 years of making life changing differences for people with disabilities.
This realisation, knowledge and vision inspired Frances to start the charity in 1988, work began in earnest and one year later, a number of physically disabled adults were partnered with dogs. The impact of these partnerships was immediately clear – dogs can make a big difference to improving people’s lives and offer both practical and emotional support. Since then, we have created no less than 875 assistance dog partnerships, run many hundreds of family dog workshops, worked with schools and hospitals in the community and been involved in many special projects. Dogs for Good client, Ann, is partnered with assistance dog, Twickers and explains: “I’d loved my pet dogs in the past but the bond you get with these dogs is something else. Your self-worth is elevated because you have to care for another life; grooming, walking, feeding, rather than being the one that receives care. Having the dog doesn’t just give me confidence, it gives my husband and daughters confidence, too, because they know I’m not ever on my own. Before, I was just a lady in a wheelchair. Now, I’m Ann with the lovely, clever, amazing dog and my disability fades into the background.” Dogs for Good Chief Executive, Peter Gorbing says: “Looking ahead to the next 30 years, we intend to share our knowledge and experience with more people as well as providing services directly to those that desperately need it. We’ll use digital and online technologies to support the work and will continue to innovate, share best practice and collaborate with others.” We are always keen to welcome new recruits who are able to volunteer their time and energy to help create more life-changing partnerships and further the work we carry out. There are many ways to get involved from caring for a puppy or dog or joining a local supporters group. To find out more about the last 30 years of Dogs for Good, visit our website: www.dogsforgood.org Many thanks and best wishes, Tina Williams, Email: tina.williams@dogsforgood.org

How the Gang Show started in the words of Ralph Reader, CBE, MBE, 1903-1982 My tale really begins on the day I met the Holborn Rovers, and -almost before I knew it- became one of them. It was for these boys that I wrote all the sketches and songs for a single concert. It was the first time I’d ever attempted such a thing. Not that I was ever very happy about that word “concert”. You see, my life had been spent in the professional theatre, first as an actor and producer on New York’s famous Broadway, and then in London. Indeed, when the plans for the first “Gang Show” were being laid, I was rehearsing a new show at the Palace Theatre. No, I was determined, once we were committed, that any entertainment we would put on with the Holborn Rovers and their friends would be a real production: no trekcart displays or drilling or any of the routine items which seemed always to be included in my Scout “concert”. Well, after that show, Admiral Philpotts, who was then the County Commissioner for London, stopped me outside the lift at Scout Headquarters and told me how much he’d enjoyed the Holborn Rovers show. Then he said, “Reader, we’ve a wonderful camp-site at Downe, and we’re very anxious to build a swimming-pool there. Can you help us raise the money?” I’d missed that lift two or three times, and as I badly wanted my lunch in the restaurant four floors up I said, “Yes, sir, sure I’ll do it.” I made a dive for the lift, but before I got out of it again 1 wondered what I’d let myself in for. I lunched with Fred Hurll and another pal “Tinny” Fellowes, and before that meal was over we’d planned the programme for a bigscale revue, and, what’s more, had decided that the best place to put it on was the Scala Theatre, which lies between Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, London. I knew that 1 wanted a hundred-and-fifty boys and men in the company and that, to satisfy my pride in the Movement - and my own self-respect - it would have to be well up to West End standards! Our first rehearsal was held on May 25th, 1932, my birthday. And I may say that one of the happiest thoughts I still have about this period of my life is that a number of my friends of those days - the true pioneers - are still actively concerned with the show, among them Fred Hurll, now Chief Executive Commissioner of the Scout Association, Jimmy Cregeen, who, with his two sons, Ken and David, is still a tower of strength, and Jack Beet, whose middle name is “Rover” and whose life has been spent in the 4th Harrow. One night during rehearsals word was brought to me that the title of the show had to be decided that evening so that posters could be got ready for the initial announcements to the public. We had just broken for cofFee. Then 1 told one of the boys to call the cast back to continue rehearsals. As they all crowded back into the room I said to the youngster, “Are they all back?” He looked at me and in a Cockney voice said, “Aye, aye, Skip; the gang’s all here.” I stood rooted to the spot. “The gang’s all here!” “THE GANG’S ALL HERE!’ That’s it! That was the title we had been looking for. We were a Gang and the Gang was all here. Yes sir, I thought, that’s IT.

Girlguiding Warwickshire Girlguiding Warwickshire’s seven and half thousand members experience a diverse range of opportunities, we equip and empower girls with skills that give them confidence, the confidence to find their voice, their place and to stand up for themselves. We offer a safe, welcoming girl-only space for girls and young women to try new things, help other people and discover their passions and talents. All while having fun with a group of ready-made friends! We’re dedicated to girls leading the way - they choose activities, challenges and events that inspire them, and our volunteers support them to make it happen. Because girls shape and lead everything we do, we know that we’re offering the best opportunities and experiences for girls today. We’re always updating and adapting our programme and resources so that they’re relevant to girls today. For example, girls told us they wanted to talk about mental health, so we created Think Resilient a resource delivered by our specially-trained Peer Educators to help build girls’ resilience and wellbeing.

SO, WHAT’S GOING ON? Whether a Beaver on their first scout trip or a seasoned Explorer, Get In 2018 has something for everyone. Centred around six activity zones (Active, Air, Earth, Fire, Space and Water) we’ve got lots of exciting daytime activities that are coming to Get In. How about a spot of Tomahawk Throwing in the Active zone? Or learning some Bushcraft skills in the Fire zone? If you’re feeling energetic you can bounce around on the inflatables in the Air zone - but don’t jump too high or you might find yourself floating in the Space zone! And that’s not all, for the first time at Get In we’ve got a super seventh zone - Saturday night entertainment! Whether you want to boogie on down at the disco, chill out in the quiet zone, or munch on popcorn in the cinema, there will be something for all - even the leaders!
Can you help us? Get In 2018 is a real group effort with the Event Team currently made up of around 40 volunteers from across the county. They’re working hard to organise everything for May next year, but they’re going to need help! Whether you’re a parent with some free time or a leader looking for something to do whilst your group are on the activities, everyone will be valuble!
