New Geographies #10: Fallow Different authors The term fallow is borrowed from agriculture as a metaphor to critically examine the role of strategic dormancy in cycles of valorization and devalorization of the built and unbuilt environment. Rather than a strict binary of fecund or barren, however, New Geographies #10 conceives of fallowness as a rich and complex terrain to provoke a critical examination of the sites, strategies, scales, and imaginaries of the unused, the devalued, and the dormant, and explore modes of revalorization in all its forms: economic, ecological, social, cultural. Ultimately, it is hoped that this compilation will provide a foundation on which designers can build new lines of questioning regarding processes of urbanization that will illuminate new speculative horizons for the design disciplines, while also demarcating points for cross-disciplinary study of the built and unbuilt environments. Álvaro Siza Vieira: A Pool in the Sea In conversation with Kenneth Frampton Kenneth Frampton, Vincent Mentzel This book, includes a vast collection of descriptions, drawings and photographs by Vincent Mentzel about the project, as well as a writing by Siza Vieira himself and other texts. The book also includes an analysis of the bathers’ course by Pedro Vieira de Almeida, as well as testimonies of the architects Diogo Seixas Lopes, Manuel Aires Mateus, Michel Toussaint, Joao Manoel Gomes Da Silva, Luís Urbano, Diogo Seixas Lopes and Pedro Vieira de Almeida.
Vincent Mentzel has been a staff photographer for the major Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and is now one of the best-known Dutch photojournalists. As staff photographer he has played a crucial role in shaping the paper’s image. Kenneth Frampton is Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia GSAPP, where he has taught since 1972. He was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London and has worked as an architect and as an architectural historian and critic on important foreign assignments. Operative Mapping The Use of Maps as a Design Tool Roger Paez Operative Mapping investigates the use of maps as a design tool, providing insight with the potential to benefit education and practice in the design disciplines. Magdalena Haggärde, Gisle Løkken This book discusses approaches towards landscapes under pressure and transformation, and the importance of unprejudiced and experimental investigations to reveal its natural and cultural complexity. It aims to challenge internalized concepts about how landscapes are considered and investigated, to open for alternative research, and legitimize subjective, singular and experimental approaches as valid and appreciated as a foundation for an informed process. Mara Marcu, Mitchell McInturf The publication captures the work done at the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design while showcasing student work, faculty research, co-op stories, study abroad programs, and snapshots from the many events happening at our school. Echos is a platform for simultaneous conversations with shared ethos at UC SAID. Various constellations begin to surface and map our diverse milieu of academic and social interactions that revolve around the following five main themes: anxiety, praxis, trope, chreod, and utopia. Introduced by a series of analytical diagrams which are paired up with essays by lead figures in the discipline, the themes expand on the issues of theoretical anxiety, architectural discourse, practice, typology, self-made analogies, ad hoc morphologies inherent to research, flux and reflux similar to the natural cycle of compression and release generated by our co-op program, and the fictitious, the ideal. Mauro Baracco, Louise Wright Responding to the theme “freespace”, Repair at the Australian Pavilion, curated by Baracco+Wright Architects in collaboration with Linda Tegg, aims to expand the point of view from the object of architecture, to the way it operates in its context, advocating a role that catalyses or actively engages with the repair of the places it is a part of. Repair as an approach to architectural thinking is set to become a critical strategy of architectural culture. It is particularly relevant to Australian architects who work in one of the most diverse and ecologically sensitive landscapes in the world. Uniquely, our cities are interspersed and bordered by remnant vegetation and often connected to large natural systems as well as built over the traditional cultural landscapes of our First Nations peoples. They are also scenes of developing ecosystems at which humans are at the centre of.

Gran Mediterraneo Project Process Progress David Tajchman David Tajchman’s first book about a self-initiated architectural research for a White City-specific High-Rise: the Gran Mediterraneo. Gathering working documents, sketches and rare pictures in an object specifically designed by graphic designer and art director Sara Jassim. This book is an opportunity to share his references, background, research documents, notes, drawings and working (3d) models. The book was first an exhibition-catalogue, presented last September 2016 in Paris in the framework of a solo show entitled “Gran Mediterraneo - Project Process Progress”. David Tajchman is an award-winning architect working at all scales and in various disciplines. Wood Urbanism From the Molecular to the Territorial Daniel Ibañez, Jane Hutton, Kiel Moe From small-scale thermal properties to large-scale forestry, territorial, and carbon cycle issues, wood has latent propensities not well addressed in the current discourse on wood construction. Over 28 essays and 15 projects investigate the role of design to catalyze a public, as well as forums for that public to act upon. The rise of several divisive leaders within contemporary politics, has once again brought action to the foreground. As a new generation makes their voices heard, they are also grappling to find effective platforms for action through design. The notion of action simultaneously evokes a discussion on what we are acting for and value. This is particularly important to consider at a moment when the authoritative systems –governments and corporations– appear more divergent to the voices on the ground. At the same time, within an increasingly pluralistic society, what we collectively value is increasingly unclear, which presents a primary challenge on action. Geostories Another Architecture for the Environment Rania Ghosn, El Hadi Jazairy Geostories is a manifesto on the environmental imagination presented in architectural projects that engage the planetary scale with a commitment to drawing as medium. In 12 geographic fictions, the book invites critical and speculative engagements of humanity’s relations to Earth and technology. How do we make sense of the Earth at a moment in which it is presented in crisis? To live in an epoch that is shaped by extensive environmental transformations is to be confronted with risks and uncertainties at a planetary scale. Paradoxically, we remain little mobilized, in part because of our failures to comprehend the reach of a story that is both difficult to tell and hear. Geostories responds to the environmental crisis not only as a crisis of the physical environment but also as a crisis of the cultural environment. This book won a Graham Foundation Grant.

General Theory of Urbanization 1867 Ildefons Cerdà First translation into English on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the publication of the General Theory of Urbanization by Ildefons Cerdà, an essential work on urban development. In 1867 Ildefons Cerdà published his “Teoria general de la urbanització.” In this text, the “science of building cities”, understood as a phenomenon, became a new discipline with a broad economic, social and cultural impact on the life of the people of the city. XPositions: Pavilion Dialogues Yichen Lu, Kenneth Namkung In May 2015, Studio Link-Arc completed its most prominent work to date, the China Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015. The project was China’s first freestanding Expo Pavilion outside of its own borders. The design and construction of the project raised a number of issues relevant to current architectural discourse: temporality and the legacy of Expos; nationality and representation; instant place-making and iconicity; and the relationship between parametric design and craft. XPositions is not conceived as a monograph that focuses on one project. Fernanda Canales A case study that analyzes the relationship between ideas and houses, this book focuses on 100 years of housing projects in Mexico. The geographic, social, and economic diversity of Mexico constitute a prime example of the challenges inherent to meeting individual needs in an increasingly crowded world. The drawings and essays comprise new ways of looking at theories and buildings in order to redefine the connection between housing and the city. This research is centered in drawings of 70 housing projects, creating a common language highlighting different attempts at reinventing the house not as isolated battles but as part of a strategy for reimagining how we want to live. This book showcases the pivotal voices that have shaped major cities through housing projects and explores how policies and ideas transform into built form, and how in turn buildings shape societies. These processes have come to define our contemporary understanding of the nature of becoming, which stands in contrast to established notions of architectural design and authorship. The design research of Roland Snooks is a speculation on the relationship between emergent processes of formation and architectural design intention, and explores the strange specificity of an architecture that is drawn out of this interaction. This research operates within a larger architectural and cultural concern for complex systems and their role in algorithmic design processes. The original methodological territory carved out from this larger milieu is the articulation of a design process in which architectural intention is embedded within emergent processes. Ideas, Images, and Projects from the Spanish Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale
Iñaqui Carnicero, Carlos Quintáns Eiras The book displays the work of seven photographers and fifty five projects of architecture, presenting the problem through the unfinished constructions strewn across different points of Spain´s geography, as well as five critic essays and eleven interviews with prestigious professors from the international academia. The dictionary definition of “unfinished” presents the following synonyms: unadorned, crude, formless, imperfect, raw, rough, under construction, unfashioned, unperfected, unpolished, unrefined. All of these adjectives conjure in the imagination of designers a new type of architectural intervention that perceives the existing built environment as a constraint upon which we can leave an important but impermanent mark. In this way, architects become a link in the chain of a structure’s life. Through the concept of the “unfinished,” we may understand the desirability of a perpetual state of evolution of the architectures that define our societies. The architecture of the unfinished leaves open a door to the unexpected, and to ideas and interventions of the future .

Imminent Commons: The Expanded City Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Jeffrey S. Anderson As the second book of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017, it presents contemporary urbanism thoughts on nine imminent commons, which engage collective ecological and technological resources relevant to all cities and even extra-urban territories. Recent years have seen greatly increased political opposition between urban and rural areas, bordering on crisis. In order to avoid further aggravating this urban/rural polarization, we need to cultivate a discourse on urbanism that focuses on the interdependencies between cities and the greater ecologies. The way we think about cities needs to expand significantly to incorporate their effects on global natural cycles, how they metabolize resources from rural areas, and their impact on both local and regional economies.
Alejandro Zaera Polo is an architect and founder of London and New York-based AZPML. He is the former dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University and a prolific theorist. Architecture and Waste A (Re)planned Obsolescence Hanif Kara, Leire Asensio-Villoria, Andreas Georgoulias Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Through comparing the well-established waste-to-energy industries in Sweden with less established engagements in the northeast of the United States, opportunities and lessons are revealed. This book presents a refreshed, design-led approach to waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, reflecting work done at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Architects have a role to play in integrating waste-to-energy plants physically and programmatically within their urban or suburban contexts, as well as potentially lessening the generally negative perception of energy recovery plants. This book considers the material basis of building as a key impetus of both urbanization and the energetics of urban life. The otherwise externalized material geographies and thermodynamics of building’s material basis reveal much about the dynamics and efficacy of how we build. It plots the material history and geography for one plot of land in Manhattan—the parcel of land under the Empire State Building—over the past two hundred years.
Through rich illustrations, it tracks all the building materials that have passed through this parcel or remain in its geographic and ecological dynamics: spatially (in terms of their geographic material footprints and industrial processes) and quantitatively (in terms of embodied energy, embodied carbon, and energy flow). In successive chapters, the book articulates the empire and states that are inherent to building, but remain unconsidered— abstract and unknown—by architects. Public Catalyst Manuel Bailo Demonstrates the existence of public space catalysts, as well as the need for their presence for an expectant or indifferent place to be activated. This work – which understands that the city, now and always, has had and must have public spaces of intensity – proposes urban catalysts as agents that are capable of activating a place that was previously indifferent. The comparative work of historical and recent cases, developed by research and drawings, has allowed us to discover that the vivid public spaces of identity and reference have been formed due to the urban effect caused by these agents that we call “catalysts”. Transitional Spaces for the 21st-Century City

Lluís Ortega This book develops an alternative and inclusive approach -based on the hypothesis that the impact of digitalization on architectural culture is similar to the effects of the linguistic turn in philosophy- and steers clear of exclusive dichotomous approaches, without the foundational reconsideration of the discipline or its ontological conservation. Most studies on the digital phenomenon carried out in the context of the discipline are focused on the more technical aspects, with expert discourses based on the standpoint of the optimization of existing processes. Given the general tendency toward creating experts and encapsulating knowledge, this text is meant to be based on a transversal vision, which can help non-specialist readers to understand certain complex phenomena.

Rosetta S. Elkin Tiny Taxonomy offers a visually engaging collection of images and texts drawn from a series of contemporary garden installations, which highlight the role of individual plants in landscape architecture. Tiny Taxonomy showcases species that are in cultivation or in profusion, but rarely purposefully planted. A grouping of plants is categorized by common traits derived from an evolution towards feature miniaturization, generating another form of classification. Due to the diminutive size of their features, these plants are often over-looked and therefore tend to be under specified. It seems that as the world around us gains complexity and intricacy, our biological world is tending towards monotony. Tiny Taxonomy considers smallness a design opportunity, offering innumerable microcosmic considerations of the leaf form, flower structure, and physical habitat of individual plants. Rosetta S. (Un)Precedented Pyongyang Dongwoo Yim An urban research on how Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, was reconstructed from the Korean War based on the idea of socialist urbanism and how those socialist urban spaces will transform when it adopts the new market-economy system. After the three years of Korean War in the 1950s, Pyongyang was completely demolished. Although the current morphology may not be exactly same as the original master plan, many urban spaces and infrastructures remain as evidences of socialist urban planning. And interestingly enough, these are urban elements that have major conflict with the idea of market-oriented economy, and at the moment, the morphology of the city is already changing. Then, the question is, will Pyongyang become one of post-socialist cities, having them as precedents to the city, or will it have its own development path that is unprecedented?
Dongwoo is a faculty member of Rhode Island School of Design. His research interest focuses on integral urbanism and architectural typologies that catalyze urban transformation in various urban scales. From 1995-2001 Betsky was Curator of Architecture, Design and Digital Projects at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is the current dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

Beyond Patronage: Reconsidering Models of Practice Joyce Hwang, Martha Bohm, Gabrielle Printz This book explores contemporary architectural practices and design agendas that are being shaped or enabled by new forms of ‘patronage.’ Essays, projects, and interviews will examine emerging forms of sponsorship, new forms of connectivity –technological or social– that produce innovative modes of collaboration, and strategies for cultivating relationships that allow us to rethink typical hierarchies between those in power and those in service. One could argue that the profession of architecture has traditionally been characterized by patronage. Throughout the twentieth century, private clients have enabled architects to develop and realize their most significant work. Landscape Tunings An Urban Park at the Danube Silvia Benedito, Alexander Häusler Landscape Tunings foregrounds design as mediator between the community and the riverbanks through its civic, ecologic and micro-climatic affordances. The book unpacks the design process (bottom-up) and the design strategies (tactical) of the “Danube Park / Danube-Loop” project in Ingolstadt an der Donau. Flowing through 10 countries, the Danube is one of the most international rivers in the world. For the Spring 2018 issue, NESS warms up with a selection of the nine installations that rocked 2017 and further browses through the work of Eleni Petaloti & Leonidas Trampoukis, whose sibling practices shift from one scale to another with subtle sophistication. Next, NESS headed to Detroit and dedicates a 38-page survey to draw a portrait of the city through their own curious and questioning lenses. In the Dossier section, “Between Cozy History and Homey Technics”, architects, critics, and thinkers were asked to provocatively discuss the intellectual and pragmatic set of tools. Finally, NESS sat down with two acclaimed architecture offices: French Bruther and New York-based SO-IL.

The first section includes enticing visual documentation on HSS’s projects (Balloon Landing Park, Housing for the Fishermen, Daily Mosque, Town Hall & Park, Float Pavilion, Watermelon Landscape, and Courtowers) complemented by critical remarks by Nader Tehrani and Sarkis. In the Dialogues section issues an interview to Sarkis by editors, Florencia Rodriguez and José Mayoral, a conversation between Angelo Bucci and Sarkis, and a discussion between Stan Allen, Kenneth Frampton, and Sarkis.
