In 2006, when arriving in Chicago... Michael Wolf took the elevated train into the city at dusk and was struck by the transparency of its architecture. After having worked in Asia for many years, Wolf saw Chicago as providing the opportunity to continue his [photo graphic] study of city life in a radically different context. Shooting from public rooftops over the course of several months, Wolf ado pted a similar visual approach to [that of] his architectural work in Hong Kong. However, the transparency and monumental size of Chicago’s buildings give a very different result: the city is far less dense than Hong Kong, thereby creating a greater sense of depth to the images, while the transparency of its glass skyscrapers causes the life within them to seep out. During the editing process for the series, Wolf became fascinated by the glimpses of people’s lives visible through the windows of the buildings that he had photographed. He painstakingly scoured every inch of these cityscapes to find human details to pair with his architectural images, blowing these details up into highly pixilated large-scale tableaux. By juxtaposing the photo graphic equivalents of a microscope and a telescope, he provides an underlying tension: shot during the early days of the global financial crisis, the monumental size and sleekness of the buildings contrast with the fear and fragility on the pixilated faces of its occupants.

NOWNESS has been our approach since it was launched in 2013, in order to present the dreams and goals of the Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Ar­ chitecture to the world. NOWNESS FILES is a printed me­ dium that announces the college’s directions, and its prin­cipal aims. “Rethinking Metropolis” is the theme that the school has operated under, since the inaugural publi­ cation of NOWNESS. Traversing the digital and physical landscapes; questioning the architectural discipline; crit­ ically thinking and debating; model making and the act of drawing. These activities are dualities, which only partially comprise the foundation of today’s architectural edu­ cation. Today’s students are also young-architects from all over the world; they take a stance, collaborate crossculturally, and engage with metropolises through time. Fast-paced and highly connected, today’s architectural discipline, and education, functions in symbiosis with tech­ nology that as little as twenty-five years ago, was practi­ cally non-existent. How must we approach this myriad web of complex technologies–to both shape and mitigate the metropolis–considering that it is largely through uncon­ scious acts that we experience our urban realms? Invisible forces will shape the world’s metropolises in the coming decades, but how will architects respond and interact with these shape-shifting powers, which will also drive rapid change? If the technology used to adapt and study our metropolises is a largely recent phenomenon, then it is technology still in its infancy; architects thus have the in­ tellectual capacity and proper skill set to allow them to exert influence on production methods through which they create, for critical thinking, for research, for making. Such dualities of today will blur in our future.

Welcoming students, facul­ ty, and staff; but also guests and visitors; and curious passersby who just want to know what’s going on... a home for friends from all over the world... The address for architecture...

GLOBAL NETWORK

Today, architecture is practiced within a global context. Ideas, images, techniques, and individuals flow throughout the world, more rapidly than ever before. This global market demands a global understanding, with knowledge and perspectives broad enough to be able to discuss different cultures and clients, but grounded enough to be expressed in the vernacular. The College of Architecture provides students with an ample vocabulary that encompasses how architecture engages our world. We are committed to preparing students with the fundamental skills and knowledge to succeed in the global design community. We have a core belief that the college must be a leading participant in the global design community, and that all of us–faculty, students, staff, and guests–should seek to constantly pursue exchanges that make connections from Chicago, out to the world, and back again. These connections are active, two-way exchanges based in immersion, fieldwork, debate, and collaboration–the productive aspiration to create collective and ongoing projects, globally. Its expression takes the form of a relationship where guests–speakers, teachers, students, and exhibitions–come to us; and we go out to the world by way of travel, teaching exchanges, study abroad, publications, and exhibitions of our own. The college is our institute’s forum where the world comes to push the architectural dialogue forward, and where that dialogue is, simultaneously, transmitted and relayed to the world.
