CASE STUDY:

Partnerships to drive legacy‌

The Principles: The following principles have been identified to help sport and recreation boards achieve good governance:

1 2 3 4

Integrity: Acting as Guardians of the Sport, Recreation, Activity or Area The Board must look to uphold the highest standards of integrity not only in what it does but in the wider environment of its sports, recreation activity or area.

Defining and Evaluating the Role of the Board The Board needs to understand and evaluate the role it plays and the way it can contribute to the organisation.

Delivery of Vision, Mission and Purpose The Board should set the high level strategy and vision of the organisation and ensure that it is followed without becoming involved in the operational delivery.

Objectivity: Balanced, Inclusive and Skilled Board The Board should be made up of individuals with the right balance of skills and experience to meet the needs of the organisation. Included in this is a need for independent expertise and for representation of the diversity of the sport and the community it serves.

Standards, Systems and Controls The Board needs to be conscious of the standards it operate to, and its role in exercising appropriate and effective control over the organisation.

Accountability and Transparency

The Board needs to be open and accountable to its membership and participants and its actions should stand up to scrutiny when reasonably questioned.

Understanding and Engaging with the Sporting Landscape The Board need to be aware of the international and domestic sporting worlds and position its organisation appropriately.

Chief Executives Report:

Growing participation and strengthening partnerships…

I am delighted to report on a strong first full year of activity as an independent community interest company. We have made excellent progress against our targets while also securing new and exciting strands of work.

The key priorities for 2011/12 were to ensure high quality delivery of our existing contracts while also seeking new opportunities to increase participation. The core team has worked tirelessly to deliver for our local, regional and national partners. Of particular success was the delivery of the Sportivate programme, Active Dorset have regularly been amongst the highest performing CSPs nationally and continue to be seen as an example of best practice. Also following an external audit of our governance and procedures we received a comprehensive evaluation which gave our funders assurance that the organisation is managed appropriately, this was an excellent achievement for a new company.

Success in expanding our services included becoming a qualified provider under the NHS and securing a contract to deliver the Dimensions programme in Dorset County. This programme works with overweight young people and their families, trying to help them lead more healthy and active lifestyles. We also agreed to deliver a Live Site Sport Arena for LOCOG during the

Olympic Games in Weymouth.

Headline achievements include: ●

Successful delivery of the Sportivate programme working with local partners to enable nearly 2000??? Teenagers and young adults aged 14 -25 to take part I almost 500?? Local sports projects.

Supported the drive to reinvigorate competitive school sport including local delivery of the School Games legacy programme, planning for the delivery of a successful County Festival in the summer of 2012.

Inspired almost 300?? Volunteers to sign up as Sport Makers and pledge 10 hours of their time to make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues.

Coordinated Playground to Podium programme which assists young disabled people to participate and progress into local clubs and along NGB talent pathways

Recruited over 100 coaches and provided 500 CPD courses as part of the local coaching network, iCoach.

Helped secure over £2 million of inward investment into our County for sport and physical activity.

Supported the delivery of Team Dorset Challenge in partnership with Dorset PCT, helping 8000 people find activity and challenge themselves to do more.
