This squad makes the show go ’round.

The Outdoor Retailer team is eager to meet you at the show. As we build a future together, the team is available to answer questions, support your needs, network . . . or just say hi!

We Build Communities

“outdoors” (think: hiking boots and climbing hardware) keeps finding ways to broaden that definition. You will still find incredibly technical products that push the boundaries of performance here, but you will also see a new inclusiveness out in the aisles in everything from campsite espresso makers to sustainable urban rucksacks to delicious snacks. Those niche products contribute to an $887-billiondollar industry, a force in the American economy that speaks to the most American of pursuits: finding ourselves, our friends, our families out in the wilds of this country. This community also keeps speaking up, as any good community does. This show marks a new beginning, a new chance to continue to see just how business can thrive as a passion. We have become more diverse, making efforts to think beyond the usual stereotypes of who goes outdoors, seeing a community that accepts and accommodates all races, religions, genders, and viewpoints. Most of all, this community is finding its voice when it comes to the outdoors itself. We will keep working to prove that a community must stand up and advocate for the resources that all its members love and enjoy. Most importantly, we hope to grow this community, to prove that the best way to bring others in is to take them outside with us and share what we all keep so close to our hearts.

IT’S HARD TO HURRY through the aisles of the show. Most of us can’t get very far before we run into someone we know. And this year we welcome our friends from the ski and snowboard industries. Some of us have not stood side by side for nearly 30 years. There will be handshakes and hugs and often plans not just to get business done, but to get outside and ski or hike. This does not happen at other trade shows. Outdoor Retailer is a gathering of the tribe as much as it is a business venture. You feel the love here. That’s because the outdoor industry at heart is truly a community. This is how it’s different from other industries, and it’s the key to the innovation and spirit that make it so vibrant and successful. People come to the outdoor industry because they love it. And that passion translates into successful business because the desire to innovate and create product begins with the need to use that gear in the wild, with passion. Most importantly, the industry shares a deep love for the great wild places on this planet. It is committed to preserving and stewarding them. You won’t find other industries that advocate for the resource that supports them—not to make cash off it, but for its own sake. This community continues to grow and evolve. It has always been a collection of misfits and out-of-the-box thinkers, but what began more than 35 years ago as a collection of brands selling products that could easily be called THE DAILY | OUTDOOR RETAILER + SNOW SHOW

NEWS OIA UPDATE

Bringing Climate Accountability to the Fore

I’D LIKE TO BEGIN by saying thank you. In 2017, you engaged with OIA and the industry on an unprecedented level to achieve some of the industry’s most important and impactful actions ever. With the Outdoor Recreation Economy report, we continue to show that the outdoor industry deserves a seat at the big kids’ policy table. You amplified the message that public lands are the backbone of an $887 billion economic engine and that investments in and protection of public lands are fundamental to healthy communities and economies everywhere. Thank you for educating our elected officials and holding them accountable. Together we are a force for public lands. Through your support of the Outdoor Foundation and the Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge, we’re introducing young people to life and careers outdoors. In 2017, we funded youth engagement programs to the tune of $1.3 million. That translated to nearly 100,000 hours of activity for more than 40,000 individuals who might otherwise not have experienced the outdoors. Together we are a force for participation. In 2017, the outdoor industry was rightfully and repeatedly recognized as a leader in corporate and supply chain responsibility not only for what we’re doing well but, perhaps more importantly, for acknowledging there are things we could do better. Holding ourselves accountable—as individual brands via the adoption and use of the Higg Index and as a symbiotic network via the precompetitive

10

and collaborative OIA Sustainability Working Group—demonstrates that together we are a force for sustainable business innovation. In 2017, accountability underscored so much of what we achieved. In 2018, we’re bringing it to the fore. This past November, the Global Change Research Program released its fourth National Climate Assessment. It states, unequivocally, that climate change is real and humancaused. The outdoor industry is among the first to experience the impacts of climate change. Likewise, we play a role in contributing to it. If we are going to call our policymakers to task—and we will—we must first hold ourselves accountable. In 2018, we want you to commit on two fronts: climate advocacy and climate mitigation. We will be here with tools, resources, and support, starting by partnering with Snowsports Industries America and Protect our Winters for our Industry Breakfast on Day 1 of the show. Paul Hawken, noted author of the best-selling book Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, will talk about corporate reform on a macro level. Outdoor Industry Association will continue that conversation at a micro level throughout 2018 to help you engage your employees on climate initiatives and to take action through corporate advocacy. To begin, we’ve created this climate engagement menu (right). We recognize that our members are in different places and positions. We don’t expect you to do everything on this menu, but we do ask you to do something. To be clear, this isn’t a linear path. There’s no correct order of engagement actions. There is only a first step and a next step. Together We Are a Force,

Thick Around the Middle

Alpine ski retailers across the country, located in both mountain towns and urban settings, are experiencing a renaissance of the all-mountain mid-fat ski (90 to 100mm at the waist). These daily drivers have become the bread and butter for consumers and retailers. “It’s been consistent,” notes Bryan Heil of Christy Sports in Boulder, Colorado. “Three to four years ago people were said to be going narrower—a rebound from super-fat skis—but most skis purchased these days have waists around 100mm,” Heil says.

1. The Atomic Vantage 107 Ti ($900) is built on a thin wood core with titanal laminates, which provides a lightweight setup that’s strong and stable in hard snow. A beveled surface near the tip of the ski and along the base allows for easy flotation in powder and the ability to change turn shapes in mixed conditions.

3. Chamonix, France-based Black Crows Skis is steadily gaining recognition in the U.S. The flagship model, the Corvus ($850), gets a transformation for 2018. The 107mm-waisted powder ski changes to a reverse camber with titanal plates and a stiff flex underfoot that’s forgiving in the tip and tail.

2. Blizzard adds the Sheeva 9 (148-172cm, $600), a women’s version of the new Rustler 9, to its expanding freeride line. At 92mm underfoot, the Sheeva 9 uses less rocker and more camber than other Rustler models for stability in shallower snow. A titanal laminate provides underfoot stiffness for great carving, but torsional rigidity tapers toward the tip and tail—providing an easy entry and exit to turns.

4. Elan’s top-selling ski in North America, the Ripstick, gets a carbon makeover. For 2018/19 Elan offers Black Edition skis in select models—the Ripstick ($900), Amphibio, and women’s Delight. Carbon wraps around the wood core of the versatile 96mm-waisted ski and covers the top sheet for an external finish, providing a lightweight and less abrasive ride than typical carbon constructions.

One ski to rule all snow? Not so fast. Customers are increasingly looking for specialty skis to meet the conditions where they live. Ski shops in New England say customers are opting for slalom skis and front-side carvers—narrower-waisted skis that excel on groomers— to complement their daily driver when conditions are firm. Meanwhile, Western shops note strong sales in fat powder boards to complement the all-mountain skis their customers already have. “Some people are hesitant to have two pairs of skis,” says Michael Strachan of Cole Sport in Park City, Utah, “But those who are moving here are buying multiple skis: an 80mm- to 90mm-waisted daily driver and a fat powder ski.”

Compatibility Test

Ski bindings add flexibility to fit with a growing number of hybrid ski boots.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12

T

HE CONTINUED POPULARITY of alpine touring boots, and skiers seeking the resort boundary have raised questions about which boot soles safely pair with which bindings. “There’s still significant confusion in the marketplace over boot compatibility of Multi-Norm Certified (MNC) bindings,” says Alex Meilleur of Evo in Seattle, Washington. So while MNC bindings are trending toward accommodating boot innovations, brands are starting to disseminate stronger language to educate consumers and retailers.

Salomon’s Shift MNC ($650) binding answers the calls of many go-hard skiers who earn their turns. It transforms the toe from classic alpine to classic tech-pins with the shift of a lever—allowing the skier to climb with lightweight ease, then snap into a traditional alpine clamp for the descent. “Pins are for climbing, not charging,” explains Chris McKearin, Salomon’s alpine commercial manger. “But with the S/Lab SHIFT MNC, you get the best of both worlds.”

7

5. To revamp its Pandora Collection, Line worked with influential female skiers like Hadley Hammer to improve performance across a wide range of snow conditions. The TGR athlete and big-mountain charger names versatility as the most important aspect of the Pandora 104 ($750). “You’re never skiing the same conditions all day and season long,” she says. “The Pandora 104 can handle it all.” 6. For 2018/19, Head is expanding its Kore line—a lightweight karuba wood construction that’s laminated with carbon and graphene

14

composites for rigidity—into the Kore 99 ($800). Available in lengths ranging from 162 to 189cm, it provides alpine charging characteristics, like strong and stable edge hold, in a nimble package. 7. The Hero Elite Plus Ti ($TBD) from Rossignol is designed for those who love bending a ski deep into an arc. At 78mm underfoot, the profile and flex of the ski optimize control through the turn, a feature Rossignol calls Line Control Technology. The tech is intended to eliminate counter-flexing for maximum stability and optimized trajectory through the turn.

Marker’s Grip Walk soles—with ribbed threads of rubber and integrated pads for binding release safety—now accommodate more boots from Dalbello, Fischer, K2, and Nordica, providing power transmission and safe release functions. “We see a future where many more skiers will be able to enjoy the benefits of easier walkability in their ski boots, so we’re offering more models than ever with GripWalk soles pre-installed,” says Geoff Curtis, VP of USA marketing at Marker, Volkl, and Dalbello.

Michael Strachan of Cole Sport in Park City, Utah, says the Look Pivots have been consistently checking out at the register: “Even the customer who doesn’t need the higher DIN is getting on the Pivot.” For 2018/19 the new Look Dual ($TBD) will be compatible with all alpine boots, Marker Grip Walk (see below), and Salomon’s Walk to Ride systems.

MORE OF THE MOUNTAIN

Customers improve their days by improving their gear’s versatility. BY CAROLYN WEBBER

Stranger Shapes

Forget what you know about a traditional snowboard design. “It seems like every board company is experimenting with some shapes that are a little more unusual,” says Bill Linkenheimer, the general manager of Will’s Ski and Snowboard Shop, which has five locations in Pennsylvania. Some are shorter, some are asymmetrical, some are twists on the swallowtail style, and some are tapered to take the burn out of powder turns, but they are all being taken up by riders looking for a second, specialty board.

Out of the Park

Park-specific boards have been popular for years, just not always in the park. Customers love their characteristics across the resort and brands are catching on. “People want a board that will carve very well and is stable, but is really loose and playful without sacrificing edge hold,” says Jake Nelson, hardgoods supervisor of Christy Sports in Sandy, Utah. The result is a board that’s got the chops for the world beyond the terrain park. Say goodbye to twinshaped, flexible boards that only thrive on boxes and rails; say hello to go-anywhere versatility.

The Sweet Spot

The world isn’t black and white. Or, in the world of snowboarders, it’s not camber or rocker. Hybrid boards are everywhere, but Garret Thilpgen, manager of Erik’s Bike Board Ski in Minneapolis, Minnesota, said that the technology only improves each year: “It’s gotten better and better. It’s rocker at the ends and camber in the middle.” Riders want to float on a rocker through powder while maintaining grip and stability with camber for a true allmountain board.

3

THE DAILY | OUTDOOR RETAILER + SNOW SHOW

Day0_16_18_GT-Snowboards_Prep-cl-ml.indd 16

2. The perfect recipe for success: Rossignol’s AmpTek AutoTurn rocker profile has a little bit of camber with a lot of rocker for stability under the feet and playfulness while

riding powder. The Sawblade ($350), the company’s newest design, has this and a little more—a serrated edge that grips the snow when carving. 3. Pushing boundaries on the camber and rocker, RIDE’s MTNPIG ($580) has a rocker at the nose and camber all the way to the rear to help keep control on packed snow. Plus, vibration-dampening Carbon Slimewalls (shock-absorbing sidewalls of the board) and carbon stringers extend under the bindings to increase contact points.

PHOTOS BY COURTESY

1. Choose your spirit animal and the board will choose you. The Quiver Series ($430-$600) by Nitro has seven different boards that look as unique as the animals printed on them. From squatty swallowtails for surfing powder to asymmetrical twins that slice through air on spins, these specialty boards are letting riders push boundaries.

LUNKY GEAR makes for a clunky ride. Companies are

experimenting with materials like polyurethrane to tick off pounds and create softer rides when leaning into turns, says Kurt Bratsberg, salesperson at Corbett’s Ski and Snowboard in Oakville, Ontario. We’re also seeing bindings get more streamlined, says Nichole McKittrick, manager of Gull Ski and Snowboard in Missoula, Montana. Instead of thick padding on the straps and back, we’re seeing more shock-absorbing foam around the base plate.

No need to sacrifice comfort for high tech. Head’s NX FIVE ($259) has an Adjustable Density Strap to change the rigidity and feel, while shock-absorbing, dampening gel pads treat your feet during long days.

You’ll never get lost in the crowds with NOW’s brightly colored Brigade bindings ($249). The Skate Tech (skateboardinspired) system transfers energy into the board so feet don’t get fatigued.

4

5

4. Looking for a board that feels both directional and twin? Enter the Mind Expander ($549) from Jones Snowboards. The unique women’s board has a blunted, squared-off nose, but also a full-size tail. Inspired by the surf rocker profile, riders will feel like they are crushing waves on the slopes with this industry-shaking design.

18

5. K2’s Manifest ($530) is the best of both worlds. The directional combination camber baseline has a camber profile in the middle and more rocker on the nose than the tail. The result? It floats well in powder, but the carbon glass layup helps riders carve into the hardpack.

A raised heel has never felt so good. The Phantom Carver from Nitro ($320) has four millimeters of rise under the heel to give power when riding heel side and comfort and control on toe side.

Winter camping gear is expensive, especially considering it’s only really useful for a small percentage of the year. Customers would rather own one product (or set of products) that can be used yearround, says Stacey Poulson, marketing director at Nugget Alaskan Outfitter in Juneau, Alaska. “Any convenience people can find when they buy outdoor gear that saves them money, they’ll go for that.” The solution? Sleeping systems, rather than individual products. Whether bag-and-pad combos, or layers of bags that clip together, systems help keep costs down while opening up more of the year.

2

Home Base

Growing summer crowds, inspiring athletes, and social media are making winter camping more popular than ever, says Jill Yotz, online retailer Mountain Gear’s hardgoods planner. But rather than jumping headfirst into traverses, loops, or lightweight freezefests, beginners are opting for the relative luxury of the basecamp model, where they explore all day then return to a central area at night, thus avoiding the gear schlep. The result is a greater emphasis on comfort and warmth rather than weight. “I haven’t seen sales on double sleeping bags let up just because it’s winter,” Yotz says.

2. The Questar 0° ($300-$350) is the colder-weather cousin of Therm-a-Rest’s popular 20° bag, stuffed with 650-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down. A reflective coating on seams traps body heat without adding weight or bulk, and an ergonomic toebox quickly warms cold feet. Loops on the top allow users to layer and customize with the brand’s other quilts and tech blankets for versatility.

3. The Klymit Insulated V Ultralite SL ($120) is the winter-ready version of the brand’s popular V Ultralite SL. The pad has an R-value of 4.4 for winter warmth and features whisper-quiet synthetic insulation, all in a lightweight package (15.9 ounces). The pad is made with a 20-denier ripstop polyester fabric and uses Klymit’s body-mapping and V-chamber design for weightefficient warmth. 4. The North Face’s reissued Northstar tents (available in 4and 6-person configurations) live up to the legacy of the originals as comfortable and stable expedition tents. The Northstar 6 ($699) is tall enough to stand in and has 96.4 square feet of floor space to create a livable and stable geodesic dome that can stand up to gusty winds and snow. A large vestibule for gear storage and dry entry and ample venting make the Northstar 6 an ideal shelter for far-flung basecamps.

1. The weakness of most sleeping bags is the underside: When fills are compressed by body weight, they lose their loft and insulation. PrimaLoft’s new answer to this old problem involves mingling its Gold Insulation with dense aerogel. The resulting material, called Cross Core (available in L.L.Bean’s Ultralight Aero Sleeping Bag for fall ‘18), maintains its insulating properties while compressed, adding warmth to the bottom of the bag without big costs in weight or bulk.

GEAR TRENDS BASELAYERS

THE WARM AND FUZZIES

Baselayers combine fabrics for improved performance and comfort. BY M.T. ELLIOTT

Skinny Skivvies

Increasingly, customers are relying on active insulation midlayers to stay warm, and only ask that bases wick moisture and don’t itch. “Our lightweight and midweight baselayers are doing well,” says Rebecca Brooks, manager and buyer at Whittaker Mountaineering in Ashford, Washington. “Expedition weight came to a grinding halt in the past year. Customers are moving toward the lighter-weight baselayer so they’re not committed to it for insulation all day.”

Under Construction

Brands are experimenting with new yarns, fabrics, and manufacturing techniques to increase the softness of next-to-skin layers. Patagonia fluffed up its baselayers with air, while Ortovox incorporated soft beechwood into its wool yarns to boost comfort. Seams also continue to disappear, with fused constructions weaving together different weights or types of thread and 3-D knitting techniques creating shape without producing much scrap material. ALL PRICES ARE MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE (MSRP).

1. Ortovox’s women’s 210 Merino Supersoft Zip Neck ($120) combines a merino wool yarn with soft beechwood fibers for an extra-soft feel against the skin. 2. The women’s Fuseknit Comfort Wrap ($60) from Craft seamlessly integrates thicker windproof front panels with lighter mesh in the lower torso and arms for body-mapped breathability in the abdomen, underarms, and forearms.

3. Patagonia’s men’s Capilene Air Hoody ($149) baselayers are 3-D knit, reducing the number of seams and boosting comfort. The merino wool and recycled polyester mix fabrics are “air blasted” to add loft and texture to the individual threads. 4. The North Face’s men’s Respirator Pant ($99) is a boot top-length baselayer with gridded stretch fleece to wick away mositure, a DWR treatment to repel light precip, and a zip pocket on the thigh for storage.

GEAR TRENDS INSULATION

1. Helly Hansen’s LifaLoft Hybrid Insulator Jacket ($185) is an evolution of its popular Lifa baselayer that uses PrimaLoft Black active insulation for extra warmth. According to Helly Hansen, LifaLoft insulation is naturally hydrophobic and traps more air than polyester.

This fall’s insulating layers take sustainability, urban style, and adventure versatility a step further. BY KASSONDRA CLOOS

Eco Chic

Recycled fibers continue to be a major selling point, and brands this season are going even further to make an impact. Take DownTek, which has eliminated the use of greenhouse gas perfluorocarbons (PFCs) from its hydrophobic down. When sustainable ingredients like wool insulation and recycled polys are comparable in price to pieces made with virgin synthetics, that’s definitely what customers are interested in, says Dax Willard, owner of Willard’s Sport Shop in Tahoe City, California.

Next-Level Hybrids

“A lot of companies are taking their best pieces and merging them together,” says Hilary Wilkes, general manager of North Carolina’s Highland Hiker. This season’s hybrids turn old classics into new pieces with exclusive insulation, puffy torsos, and stretchy sleeves or mesh backs. Hybrids make for versatile pieces at home, on the trail, and on the road. ALL PRICES ARE MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE (MSRP).

2. Patagonia’s Silent Down Jacket for women ($249) is stretchy for everyday comfort. Seventy-percent-recycled polyester taffeta and 700-fill duck and goose down reclaimed from other products keep this jacket green. 3. Channeled fleece provides warmth without the bulk in Icebreaker’s MerinoLOFTinsulated Descender Hybrid ($270)—which is part wool puffy in the core and part brushed merino blend in the sleeves. 4. Picture Organic Clothing’s women’s Chloe Jacket ($160) features PrimaLoft Silver Eco insulation, an outer shell made from 100-percent-recycled polyester, and is treated with PFC-free DWR. The puffy is also reversible, with a bold solid on one side and bright print on the other, so you get double the style in just one piece.

Tightening the Feedback Loop

EVENTS & EDUCATION public demands products manufactured without toxic materials, using fair labor practices, and which can be recycled or discarded responsibly. And industry leaders are demanding the same of themselves. While the threats of 20 years ago were primarily competitive in nature, many companies are now realizing the futility of tackling such massive challenges alone. The industry can only achieve the next level of positive impact when it is unified around common goals, adopts common approaches, and takes collective action—even when that means working closely with competitors. In James Schaffer’s presentation, and in the panel discussion to follow, the essential elements of successful collective action will be explored, along with the role of OIA as an effective platform for collaboration.

Lighten (the f@!%) Up

Trend + Design Center (Booth 1014-LL) Taking our passions and professions seriously but taking ourselves a lot less seriously . . . as people, as brands. We’re handcuffed to budgets, shareholders, and society’s ever-changing standards as though we’re under constant scrutiny (because we are). Taking risks and exposing vulnerabilities are often desired but rarely acted upon in today’s corpo-

rate landscape, creating a vanilla horizon of blah and a dusty trail of uninspired. Are we not the industry built by dirtbags, non-conformists, and fringe anti-corporate hippies? Our industry could use an enema. There is freedom in irreverence. Speaker: Jen Taylor, Brand Manager & Director of Creative Development at Mountain Khakis 2:30-3:30 PM

Jim Baird & History Channel’s “Alone”: How Wilderness Travel Taught Him Survival

The Camp (Booth 56117-UL) After surviving on northern Vancouver Island for 75 days for History Channel’s self-shot survival reality series ‘Alone’, Jim Baird, along with his brother Ted, outlasted six other teams to come home with a cash prize of $500,000. With a background in remote wilderness travel, Jim Baird was unsure how their skills would translate in a purely survival situation. While on the show, Jim completed an 8-day backpacking trek, and built a canoe and paddles using only a tarp and knife. They survived on everything from fish, to wild mushrooms, to whatever they could scrape off the bottom of a rock. When it was all said and done, they credit their multiweek wilderness travel adventures for teaching them the most important survival skill of all, and it’s not something you can learn on YouTube. In this presentation, Jim Baird will speak about his journey on ‘Alone’, and will share the survival lessons he learned along the way. He will also shed light on his journey in the outdoor industry as a full-time adventurer, content creator, and influencer for more than three years. 11 AM–12 PM

NOON – 1:30 PM

THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF COLLECTIVE ACTION — THE CASE FOR WORKING WITH YOUR COMPETITORS

SPONSORED BY

PRESENTERS: PANEL WITH OUTDOOR BRAND LEADERS, AND MODERATED BY AMY ROBERTS, OUTDOOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION AND JAMES SCHAFFER, SCHAFFER&COMBS LOCATION: LE MÉRIDIEN HOTEL – GROVE BALLROOM Driven by consumer demand, regulation, or simply the innate desire to protect the environment, outdoor industry leaders today must operate at a higher standard than ever before. The public increasingly demands fair labor products manufactured without toxic materials that can be discarded and recycled responsibly. While the threats of 20 years ago were primarily competitive in nature, many companies now realize the futility of tackling massive challenges alone. The outdoor industry can only achieve the next level of positive impact, in terms of sustainability or outdoor engagement or policy, when it is unified around common goals, adopts common approaches and takes collective action, even when that means working closely with competitors. In this presentation, the panel will discuss the essential elements of successful collective action, along with the role of OIA as an effective platform for collaboration.

AND HERE’S TO 35 MORE

Congrats to our friends at Concept III for achieving yet another milestone—35 years of success. Over the past four decades, the outdoor industry has changed, and you were there through it all, helping it evolve for the better. Always working with integrity, it’s no surprise you’ve been a trusted partner for performance textile manufacturers and specialty ingredient developers like us for all of these years. Thank you for all you’ve done to shape our industry and to push the limits of fabric-based innovations ever further. Here’s to you, and here’s to many more years of success.

From your friends and partners at

FIRST AT IT. STILL AT IT. 20 YEARS OF ECO-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE

RECYCLED

RUBBER

We keep 300,000 metric tons of rubber out of landfills every year—recycling it into every OrthoLite® insole. We’ve been doing it since we made our very first product, and we’ve done it for the billions we’ve made ever since. The only thing as good as OrthoLite® is OrthoLite®.

GEAR BEHIND THE COVER

Flying the Flag

A special thanks to all the brands that sent gear for our cover shoot. BY THE DAILY STAFF

W

E WANTED TO CELEBRATE the show’s new home, and we wanted to do it in style. But we knew we were asking for a lot when we asked brands not only to send in gear, but to send it in four specific colors. As usual, the industry showed its ability to rally behind a cool idea, and that effort translated into this cover. A big thanks to these brands for their help.
