Thanks to the home’s “piece en piece” construction, there’s so little movement in the logs, the crisp white kitchen cabinetry could be attached directly to the walls without having to take extra measures, like furring strips, to allow for settlement behind them.

ay the words “beach cottage” and chances are a log home isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. Some people believe a log cabin
is only suited for the mountains and that putting one along the shore and subjecting it to a daily assault of sea spray is the equivalent of log suicide. Well, the owners of this darling Vancouver Island log getaway and the staff of Summit Log & Timber Homes who designed and fabricated it, couldn’t disagree more. To them, log home living and beachfront living can go hand in hand. “As with any log home, you want to use a good wood preservative and ensure

In the efficient bathroom, black plumbing is as much a design feature as a practical necessity. Exposing the pipes negates the need for framed “wet walls” to conceal them, providing a larger space and emphasizing the logs. Gold mica slate in the shower adds a touch of natural elegance. 1
Inside and out, the home is coated with Timber Pro Coatings Canada “TR-16 Pine Cone” stain to enhance and protect the wood. 2
Deep overhangs shield both people and logs from inclement weather. The corner posts afforded by “piece en piece” construction eliminates interlocking cross corners and increases functionality when a porch is small. 3

The hammered-steel fireplace, which was crafted on site, holds a secret: The panel above firebox raises to reveal the room’s television. hen the owner of this timber frame home sought out an antidote to the busy-
ness of city life, it came in the form of a 2,797-square-foot barn-style home on a hill overlooking 30-plus acres of idyllic Nebraska farmland. The structure, made of rough-sawn pine with metal plate joinery, is based on Sand Creek Post & Beam’s “Great Plains Western” style, but as Cody Wortmann, the executive director of marketing, notes, “The design has been completely customized.” Every detail has been tailored to entertaining. Upstairs in the loft you’ll find enough bunkbeds to sleep a crowd.

All of the trusses in the great room are purely decorative. The log structure went up first, then the trusses followed. This can result in some cost savings for people who want this look. Confederation’s Rich Kinsman explains how: “If the frame is structural, the design may require you to have five trusses to support the weight, where if it’s decorative, you could get away with three and achieve the same effect.”

based 1867 Confederation Log & Timber Frame, they came with a dramatic waterfront lot and a deliberate plan in mind. They knew exactly where they wanted the house to go, the views they wanted to capture and which rooms needed to showcase those views. They also knew exactly where to start. The couple had seen Confederation’s “Green Woods” model and fell in love with the design, but according to company VP Rich Kinsman, they, like every other customer, tweaked it to make it their own. A few key changes were expanding the footprint slightly,

Custom countertops — copper on the island and concrete on the perimeter — set the stage for a rustic mix of materials, including a ceramic tile backsplash and a ceiling encased in white pine coated in a customblended Minwax stain. The 16-inch-onaverage western red cedar logs are peeled with a drawknife, giving them a subtle texture that serves as a counterpoint to the refined alder cabinets. BEST KITCHENS left Designed after the post-and-beam framework had been set, a 10-foot-long island is the centerpiece (and natural divider) of this Douglas fir timber frame kitchen. Together, the open-concept kitchen, dining area and great room occupy 1,200 square feet of the home’s 1,720-squarefoot main level, but the kitchen’s flow is at once streamlined and spacious. Generous alder cabinetry is strategically installed to afford amply sized windows on two sides. The lower cabinets are topped with quartz that’s nearly indistinguishable from granite but requires less upkeep. Legacy Post & Beam

right A mix of materials imbues this contemporary kitchen with character. A sleek Brazilian river rock countertop on the island and stainless-steel appliances lend a modern edge to the space, while a cozy combination of warm wood tones, from the hickory cabinets to the cedar barn door, keep it appropriately rustic for its mountain setting. Not just for looks, the kitchen boasts smart storage, too, like the small apothecarystyle drawers above the microwave station that provide a spot to stash spices. or years the owners of this Steamboat Springs, Colorado, retreat played and skied in the snowy vacation destination that thousands
of people flock to each season. But occasional visits just weren’t enough. The couple wanted a year-round hideaway to call their own, and, maybe one day, make their permanent address. That day has come, and the home they chose is a mountain-rustic beauty masterfully crafted by Canadian Timberframes, Ltd. “They saw a design on our website that they liked and had a pretty good vision of what kind of home they were interested in,” shares Jeff Bowes, Canadian Timberframes’ owner and president. “Also, I had worked with their builders for years, so with them on board, I knew this house would be something special.” The result of that collaboration is a 3,077-square-foot, three-level home constructed of Douglas fir timbers with an exterior gable truss. One of the items high on the clients’ must-have list was a garage to shield the cars from the freezing-cold winters, but their lot wasn’t huge, so Jeff’s

estled among 800 acres of Pennsylvania countryside sits a 6,300-squarefoot log-and-timber
hybrid with a look so timeless, it could have been there since the mid-1700s. But smart modifications and up-to-date amenities hint at a more modern story. Based on the “Prestwick” plan by StoneMill Log & Timber homes, this country retreat has been meticulously customized to maximize scenic views and fit in with the region’s history. “This design has been specifically catered to the lay of their land — from the architecture of the area to the view that they are trying to take advantage of,” explains Mathew Sterchi, StoneMill’s vice president of sales and marketing. From the start, the owners’ priorities were clear: stay true to the local vernacular and capitalize on the lakefront location. “Every architectural design feature is rooted in those.” The owners worked with StoneMill to create a layout that was just right; they closed in a porch to create a windowed dining room and nixed a loft in favor of a vaulted ceiling over the kitchen. Even the home office, presciently added long before 2020, boasts some of the best views and a snug fireplace.

The cabin passed through several hands before Ekiah Pickett stumbled upon it a few years ago. The Picketts had been looking for a lodge on a large piece of land to transform into an “experiential” vacation retreat. As Ekiah puts it, a place that “really screams Vermont.” “I had driven by this property a million times. I was driving by with my daughter one day, and I saw a for sale sign out. left Boasting the modern farmhouse features that today’s homeowners crave, this compact master bathroom is anything but short on style. A solid pine floor serves as the base for the crisp white shiplap and industrial feel of the shower’s tile work. Thanks to the home’s remote location, the shower was able to be outfitted with an oversized, clear-paned window that affords bathers with a sweeping southern view. To cap it off, a sliding barn door encloses the throne room. Photo courtesy of Legacy Post & Beam

Pebble tile on the shower floor echoes the Sunday River which flows right outside the back door, while the spruce and pine overhead brings in textures of the wooded landscape outside. right With 25 fenced-in wooded acres, privacy isn’t an issue in this first-floor master bath. The window above the slipper soaking tub measures a whopping 6 feet in length. Underfoot, tongueand-groove pine boards with quarterinch spacing lend a barn-like authenticity, as do the walls. Both are treated with Eco Wood — a nontoxic wood preservative that instantly ages wood as it seals it. Exposed Edison-bulb light fixtures are the cherry on top of this rustic bathroom sundae. An unexpected offer on his existing house led a log and timber home pro to design a bigger, better timber frame home for his growing family.
r
ich Kinsman knows his way around timber-framed homes. Not only is he the vice president of 1867 Confedera-
tion Log & Timber Frame, it’s the family business. But Rich knows this particular house a little better than all the others he’s helped to bring to fruition over the years — this one’s his. Rich didn’t exactly plan on building the 3,077-square-foot home crafted of white pine. But when he, his wife and their growing family got an unsolicited offer on the log home they built several years ago, they saw an opportunity to try something new. “We had a fellow ask us if our house was for sale. It was the middle of winter, my wife was six months pregnant and we had no where to go, but the offer was good enough for us to say, ‘Let’s pack our bags,’ so we sold,” Rich says with a laugh. “We really loved the layout of our log house. This house is very similar but on a grander scale.”

In order to meet Rich Kinsman’s design goal to have the great room and kitchen on one side of the house and the kids’ bedrooms on the other, the front entry was offset to the far left of the facade. It’s unconventional approach that gives the home distinctive curb appeal. “Why conform?” Rich asks. 1
The stone fireplace was positioned on the end of the house, but it keeps the energyefficient home warm. “The back room uses the furnace because the heat from fireplace won’t reach that far, but we have yet to use it in the great room or the upstairs. The fireplace warms it all,” Rich says. The home’s elegant white pine timber trusses frame the hearth. 2
According to Rich, the master bathroom’s open shower didn’t take long to get used to. “It feels like you’re showering outside,” he says — a feeling further enhanced by the largeformat sandstone tile and rain showerhead. 3

bump-out comprised of windows. This choice lets in a ton of natural light, but it also removes the stairs from the flow, boosting the home’s livable square footage and spacious design. “With how open timber homes are, one decision dominoes into the next,” Rich says. “From the stain of your beams to your flooring choice, you have to give it all a lot of thought. But we are so fortunate — we don’t need anything else.” LOG & TIMBER HOME LIVING THE BEST HOMES OF 2021

forging a new future Simple design rules the day in this Tennessee log home.
i
n the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountain range near Moss, Tennessee, a lovely log structure is more than a home — it’s a testament to one woman’s strength
and a goal realized. The owner and her husband had been
dreaming and scheming to own a log home for decades. As they moved from dreams to plans, they enlisted the help of Honest Abe Log Homes and lead designer, Mike Hix, who met with the couple on numerous occasions to customize the home’s design, which was based on the company’s Westfield stock plan. “The basic footprint is exactly the same as the Westfield, which has a simple floor plan” shares Mike. “Sometimes buyers take a stock plan and gut the whole thing to the shell, but the changes they made were minor. The biggest were making it larger and more symmetrical.”

Maple cabinets were custom designed and handcrafted by a local cabinetmaker and topped with granite. The structural 4-by8-inch Douglas fir beams were left exposed to take full advantage of the character of the wood. The owner mixed vintage pieces and accents with family antiques and modern appliances for an eclectic look.

Bursting with curb appeal, the long, low profile and wraparound porches are two aspects of this home that resonate with people. And though the 8-foot-deep porches cry out to be enjoyed from a rocking chair with a tall glass of sweet tea in hand, they also protect the logs from excessive rain and sun exposure. 1
The master suite features exposed ceiling beams, natural-finish square log walls and new hardwood floors distressed and stained to appear aged. 2
Spanning a portion of the home’s rear is a 10-by-24-inch screened porch with a cathedral ceiling and wide-plank decking. The comfortable outdoor space connects to the covered porches that surround the house on the other three sides. 3

Timberhaven Log & Timber Homes When the property on which you plan to build your dream log home comes with a few dilapidated outbuildings, the natural thing to do is refurbish and enjoy them! Such was the case with this adorable she-shed. Located just a stone’s throw from the owners’ log cabin, the shed’s original siding and windows were in such bad condition they had to be replaced, but the interior timbers and metal roof were salvaged and restored to their former glory. Now the roughly 400-square-foot mini-barn is her quiet retreat, filled with antiques and treasured heirlooms. Photos by Allen Mowery, Courtesy of Timberhaven Log & Timber Homes

An uncommon timber frame company. 2015 Family Living at State College
A home should adapt, age, and grow with its inhabitants. We find designing structures that work this way is both a challenging and an exhilarating process. Who designs our homes? We believe in the value of the custom architectural process. Whether we work with your chosen architect, or our own architectural staff, we collaborate to incorporate the nuances of timber framing in your project. Each of our clients has a different lifestyle and vision — a custom design improves the home’s relationship to you, the site, and the budget. What kind of wood do we use? Our favorite, and what we’re known for, is reclaimed timber salvaged from old industrial or agrarian structures. We also offer freshly harvested species from well-managed forests. Who will raise the timber frame and install the enclosure? The same craftsmen that cut your frame will raise and generally install the enclosure system for your project. Our experience adds to the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of building your home. Does a timber frame cost more? We think you should budget up to 20% more than a conventionally built home; however the lifetime costs of an efficiently built timber home are usually less. We also find total costs can be comparable to high quality custom homes. Many of our homes require less square footage, allowing more of the budget to be used for quality and insulation. Questions? You’ve built a movement. Over the past four years, the Fine Homebuilding and Green Building Advisor community has stood up in support of trade education and has championed those who aspire to design, build, and remodel the best homes possible. Over 70 students from across America have received a coveted Keep Craft Alive scholarship through your generosity and support. You, along with our partners in the construction industry, have invested nearly $200,000 in their future and in the future of home building. Every dollar donated to Keep Craft Alive goes directly to supporting our scholarship fund with SkillsUSA, a U.S. organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students enrolled in trade, technical, and skilled service programs. Together, let’s continue to encourage those with the passion for building to follow their dreams and continue to honor the men and women who keep the spirit of craft alive in design offices and on job sites across North America. As a community, let’s fuel the opportunity for the next generation of tradesmen and women.

Legacy Much of our lives are spent trying to leave a legacy for those who come behind us. For many, it is a legacy of workplace accomplishments, money in the bank, or maybe just setting some hard-to-reach records. But the real legacy is made within our homes, with our family. A place where the warm glow isn’t just the lights that are on, but from the thousands of memories that are being made. A timber frame home provides a warm environment for your legacy to be made.
