THE THRILL OF
SPEED Staying fit today means doing more in less time with lighter style
Yet Smiley, an accomplished mountaineer, uphill-ski racer and all-around outdoor athlete, is actually doing, at a somewhat higher level, the same thing that is driving fitness- and outdoorminded people everywhere.
…featherweight packages are helping people to do more in less time. Whether it’s squeezing in a run between business meetings or scaling a nearby summit, fitnessfocused athletes are doing more in less time with lighter style. “For me, whether it’s running to cross-train or doing one of any number of other things in the mountains, it all has to do with taking a minimal amount of gear and doing it as fast as I can, because it’s fun,” she says. “I enjoy pushing myself to see what I’m capable of doing.” Part of what has moved this trend forward is innovation in lighter outdoor apparel and footwear that work more effectively. Active-wear and shoes that seamlessly blend bulletproof weather protection and game-changing breathability
GORE_advertorial.indd DAY0_GORE-TEX 2 PAGE 1 SPREAD_ORD_S_2017.indd 2
in featherweight packages are helping fuel people to do more in less time. Smiley’s kit includes gear made with highly breathable GORE-TEX® 3-Layer Active fabric for the mountains, or GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY fabric technology for running and cycling. A higherperforming, lighter-weight version of GORE-TEX® 3-Layer Active hits the market for Spring 2018. In the last couple of seasons, GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY has introduced runners, cyclists and travelers, who are all about the most compact gear, to the lightest, most breathable Gore fabric yet. In winter or any time when she might encounter adverse conditions, Smiley uses shoes made with GORE-TEX® linings, which are poised to take a technological leap forward in Fall 2017 with GORE® Invisible Fit technology, a new way to install a waterproof GORE-TEX® membrane in running shoes. The result is a superior fit and feel.
JANELLE SMILEY
THINK WHEN IT COMES TO “IRUNNING, THERE’S A CERTAIN FREEDOM TO GOING LIGHT AND FAST, AND IT’S INSPIRING. ”
“The gear today really helps because it’s truly built for these activities,” Smiley says “When you don’t have to think about the clothing or footwear you wear, that allows for more freedom.”

Weaving through the high country on a trail run that will land her atop four 10,000-foot-plus granite peaks in a single day, Janelle Smiley trains in a way that might not share much in common with the everyday athlete.

NEW GORE-TEX® ACTIVE 3-LAYER FABRIC INCREASES PERFORMANCE For Spring 2018, Gore Fabrics will release the next generation of GORE-TEX® Active, its most breathable 3-Layer fabric. New GORE-TEX® Active fabric significantly improves comfort and durability over the current version, reducing weight by 20 percent while maintaining the Gore standard for waterproofness and breathability. Designed for the intense aerobic demands of athletes and ideal for done-in-a-day activities, GORE-TEX® Active products MEN’S GORE® R3 offer a completely new combination of ® face fabrics, membrane construction, and GORE-TEX ACTIVE HOODED JACKET backer. The result is a fabric that delivers the waterproof and windproof performance of a hard shell with the next-to-skin comfort of a soft shell.
WOMEN’S GORE® C5 GORE-TEX® TRAIL JACKET
The GORE-TEX® Active collection of fabrics weigh between 65 and 130 g/m², with the 65-gram fabric being the lightest 3-Layer waterproof-breathable construction ever offered by Gore. The result is garment weights of potentially less than 200 grams and an incredibly small packed volume for a 3-layer jacket.
GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™ FABRIC IDEAL FOR RUNNERS, CYCLISTS, TRAVELERS Highly aerobic activities such as running and cycling have their own specific set of demands for functional apparel. Meeting these demands head-on is GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™, a technology that removes the need altogether for a face fabric. The result is the lightest and most breathable GORE-TEX® product to date. GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™ fabric is well suited to running and cycling because it is exceptionally breathable, will not absorb any water, has a small packed size, and is very light weight (garment weight of approximately 100 to 130 grams). It also works well for travel and everyday use. The inside of a GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™ garment is equipped with a functional backer textile for great next-to-skin comfort. This excellent balance of protection and comfort allows the wearer to leave the garment on—rain or shine. And, because the GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™ jacket construction will not absorb any water, a garment can simply be shaken to remove any water from the surface. Users then can easily pack their jacket away in a dry state.

GORE® INVISIBLE FIT TECHNOLOGY RUNNING SHOES WITH BETTER FIT, LESS WEIGHT

GORE_advertorial.indd DAY0_GORE-TEX 2 PAGE 2 SPREAD_ORD_S_2017.indd 3
When it comes to running footwear, the number one requirement for runners is how well the shoe fits. For Fall 2017, W.L. Gore & Associates will introduce GORE® Invisible Fit, a new way to build running footwear that results in waterproof, breathable shoes that fit and feel like nonprotective running shoes.
SAUCONY RIDE 10 GTX® RUNNING SHOES
TESTERS SAY, ‘I NEVER THOUGHT A PROTECTIVE SHOE COULD FEEL THIS GOOD.’ With GORE® Invisible Fit Technology, ® the GORE-TEX membrane is engineered to directly bond to a variety of athletic footwear uppers. By perfectly matching the GORE-TEX® membrane to the footwear upper material, wrinkles and folds are eliminated, reducing pressure points and resulting in a true to size forefoot area. Compared to traditional bootie construction, GORE® Invisible Fit also reduces a shoe’s weight by up to 18 percent. Reduced water pick-up and 50-percent faster dry-out times are also benefits of GORE® Invisible Fit. “We did our research to determine from runners first-hand that they want to get their miles in, despite even the harshest conditions. And the feedback we are getting from everyone who has used the product is incredible,” said Kirk Christensen, Global Product Specialist for the Outdoor Athlete for the Gore Fabrics Division.

OUTDOOR RETAILER
Into the Future I HAVE BEEN with Outdoor Retailer for more than 14 years and the show director for three of the 35 years it has served the industry. I tell you this because I am writing these words more than a month before you will read them—and those days in between will be the most transformative in the show’s long history. By the time this comes out, everyone will know which city Outdoor Retailer will call home this winter and beyond. It’s been a busy year for Outdoor Retailer. In May we announced the acquisition of the SIA Snow Show and our plan to produce it in January as a combined Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show. That merger presented its own set of complex logistics, which we are still in the thick of finalizing. In January we announced the change to a three-show format to better match the buying and production cycles of the industry. We also released the January, June, and November dates. Barely a month later, we received the clear message from you that public lands issues made Utah an unacceptable venue moving forward. It was too late to change locations for Summer Market, but we
35 YEARS STRONG
listened to the community and began our search for Outdoor Retailer’s new home. This meant that we had committed to relocating, combining the two national shows into one in January, producing Summer Market, and creating a new November show all in a blindingly fast
timeline. No wonder people were confused, but we didn’t have a home yet and so had no news to announce. We looked at many cities, staying focused on critical dates, affordability, accessibility, and alignment with our industry’s ethos. It’s been a long process, but that’s the cost of getting it right.
From our humble beginnings in a meeting room in Las Vegas to today’s Outdoor Retailer, we welcome you to join us in a milestone year.
Marisa Nicholson Vice President and Show Director of Outdoor Retailer
Many iconic brands were born on the show floor, and it has always been a place where retailers flourish. The outdoor industry’s staying power during those many decades has allowed it to embrace a challenging, changing world. Outdoor Retailer is more than a trade show; it’s a destination where we come together to exchange ideas, innovate, ignite passions, support causes, learn and grow, and to share our love for the outdoor experience. Here’s the list of 93 brands that began it all: 3M / Thinsulate Achilles Alpineaire Food (Katadyn Food) Antelope Camping Equipment Aspen Canvas Co. Bag Makers Bellwether Bemm Enterprises, Inc. Black Ice Blue Hole Canoe Blue Puma Outdoor Equipment Blue Water, Ltd. Buck Knives Buretta Industries Bushwalker Mfg. California Rivers Camel Manufacturing Camplite Foods Camp Ways Carlisle Paddles Cascade Outfitter Chinook Sport Clement USA / Moise Cadorette, Inc.
4
We worked with Outdoor Industry Association and the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance to vet locations in the hope that where we ended up would provide the most benefit for the entire outdoor community. I am optimistic here in June that before you pick up this magazine, we will have announced a multiyear show date calendar and a location. We are home when we are together. We are bound to one another by place, choice, and our love of the outdoors. That is our strength. After 35 years—and five cities—the same bonds that drew a disparate industry together all those years ago in Las Vegas (then Reno, Long Beach, Anaheim, and Salt Lake) remain the cornerstones of the show today. Though Salt Lake is the only show location I’ve known, I’m excited to usher Outdoor Retailer and the industry into the future with a new venue, new relationships, and a new commitment to a future together. Welcome home. Wherever that becomes.

NEWS Q&A
5 Questions for…
Marisa Nicholson
VP of the Outdoor Group, Emerald Expositions
Marisa Nicholson literally runs the show. And now more than ever, Outdoor Retailer really is the show of the industry: Starting next year, the SIA Snow Show and Outdoor Retailer Winter Market will be one and the same. We caught up with Nicholson to find out how Outdoor Retailer will change over the next year. 1. WHAT WILL THE NEW OUTDOOR RETAILER + SNOW SHOW LOOK LIKE? WHY DID YOU WANT TO MERGE THE TWO SHOWS? a We did it because that’s what the industry wanted. Trade shows produce efficiencies and maximize opportunities for retailers and exhibitors. We’ve created an epicenter for winter and outdoor that every retailer and brand can benefit from. More people, more ideas, and more products will sell the outdoor lifestyle to a wider audience. An exciting show floor coupled with a huge emphasis on education and networking will help everyone
10
take advantage of the more potent sphere of influence that will be there.
2. HOW WILL THE NEW MERGED SHOW BE GOOD FOR THE INDUSTRY? a It’s all about efficiency. Retailers can now browse the entire family of winter sports products and curate store-defining collections. What sets it apart from any other B2B opportunity is that it brings everyone together: retailers, brand principals, reps, athletes, media, influencers, trend forecasters, and advocacy groups. Simply put, we are stronger together.
4. WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT FOR SUMMER MARKET? a There is so much to say about Summer Market! First, we’re celebrating our 35th Anniversary, and for us that means honoring all the incredible things the industry has accomplished in the last 35 years—the iconic companies, the retail powerhouses, the athletes and adventures, the fundamental awareness about being outdoors, and the integral role of advocacy in our success and our future. This year has already shown us how important that is—from the Alt National Park [social media] movement to our industry’s own March for Public Lands on Day 2, the drive to “protect what you love” in the outdoors is so inspiring. We’ll have a new Public Lands Action Center in the South Lobby so that all attendees can learn not only why advocacy is important, but what they can do back at home. As for the Outdoor Retailer “tried and true,” Venture Out is back again. We are bringing the RANGER Station back and that will be a hub for education, trends, and merchandising. Jeanine Pesce’s “Radical By Design” awards will highlight the best products from Venture Out in a mini pop-up shop environment, so you can see how to merchandise all the new products.
We’re launching our paddle education area, which will have a full lineup of retail and paddle-focused education as well as Casey and Ryan Higginbotham talking about their 2016 2,200-mile prone paddle from Alaska to the US-Mexico border. And finally, although it’s first in our schedule, The Demo Experience is all new. We’re going back to Jordanelle State Park— the location that paddlers love the most—which has great running and mountain bike trails, too. There will be clinics on water and on land to get your staff attuned to the products, techniques, and ideas that drive summer sales.
5. WHAT ARE YOUR BEST MEMORIES FROM THE SALT LAKE CITY YEARS? a Salt Lake City has been the home for Outdoor Retailer since I started in 2003. I’m going to miss the late night dinners at Spencer’s, where we show up and beg them to squeeze a few more people into our reservation. Or dashing across the street to grab a quick sandwich from Toasters but ending up seeing so many of our customers and having great conversations that I’m late for my meetings. Or staying at the Monaco where I run past the lobby during happy hour and think one of these days I’m going to make time to stay for one of these . . . maybe this summer. It will be bittersweet to leave Salt Lake City but I believe there is so much opportunity in change. We’re going to change our timing so that the show becomes the launch pad for product introduction. We’re going to co-locate with the Grassroots Connect event to provide a more efficient buying opportunity that will give retailers up to 5 days back in their stores. We’re going to choose a location that the industry will be excited to call home. And while we make all these changes, we are going to keep listening to the industry. We are going to continue to evolve just like our customers. We’ve been the industry’s home for 35 years and we’re looking forward to the next 35 years.

3. TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE NOVEMBER TRADE SHOW, AND HOW THAT FITS IN WITH THE NEW LINEUP. HOW WILL THE NOVEMBER SHOW AND THE JANUARY SHOW BE DIFFERENT? a When the first November show launches in 2018, it will be the preview event for categories like apparel that favor earlier deadlines. We are positioning Outdoor Retailer at the beginning of each buying cycle so that retailers can come, see the full lines from all brands, understand the marketing, meet with brand principals, and then go back to their stores, monitor sellthrough, and order at their rep shows. The January Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show will do the same for later deadline categories, like hardgoods.

NEWS OIA UPDATE
We’re Moving…Together
Our trade show is leaving Utah. Our hearts and our collective efforts will not. Let’s use this week to show our commitment to public lands here and across the country.
12
1. Come to Outdoor Foundation’s Outsiders Ball on July 25. You know it. You love it. The unofficial launch of Summer Market, this party-for-apurpose will be our biggest yet. The funds raised will go to the Outdoor Foundation’s mission of getting kids outside, including through several projects in Utah. Great food, great beer, and a chance to connect with industry leaders around our common cause to inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and stewards.
Ultimately, it’s important to understand that Outdoor Retailer and Outdoor Industry Association decided to leave Utah not only to stand by our values but, equally important, to stand by our members. 2. Come to the Industry Breakfast on Day 1 of the show. There, Sally Jewell will explain why, under her leadership, the Interior Department recommended designating Bears Ears National Monument. Two of our industry’s most inspiring professional athletes, Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold, will talk about how and why public lands grow America’s imagination and innovation. And one of our great local leaders, Montana Governor Steve Bullock, will explain how important state-level advocacy can be. We’ll also release the state data from our Recreation Economy Report to demonstrate the impact of our industry. (Can’t make it to the breakfast? BrandLive will webcast the entire event as it happens. Visit outdoorindustry.org/OR for more information.) 3. Join us for the This Land Is Your Land March on Day 2. We’ll gather at 4:30 p.m. on at the South Plaza of the Salt Palace and walk to the Utah State Capitol grounds to demonstrate our industry’s unity and commitment to public lands. 4. Come check out the Public Lands Action Center on the trade show floor. There, you’ll be able to get involved and take immediate action to let policymakers know why they should support public lands. 5. Check out our online Advocacy Center. Visit outdoorindustry.org /advocacy to learn about outdoor recreation’s incredible national- and state-level economic impact, read about issues affecting your state, and sign up to stay up to date on the latest recreation and trade policy alerts that
affect outdoor recreation business where you live and work. 6. Visit The North Face Advocacy Salon Speaker Series, which will take place in the brand’s booth. Athletes and organizations including Cedar Wright and the National Park Service have been invited to give 30-minute presentations. Education and action is critical for protecting our outdoor playgrounds. Learn from public lands experts, advocates, and athletes about what’s at stake and what you can do to make a difference. 7. Attend the following OIA lunches each day of the show from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Marriott at City Creek. Day 1: Thrive Outside. OIA releases The Outdoor Recreation Economy 50 State Reports. Day 2: Living Your Brand. Industry leaders talk about building brand ethos into everything they do. Day 3: Designing for Repair. Rainy Pass Repair tells manufacturers how to design products for durability and to allow for repairs that will extend their lives. I look forward to seeing you in July and continuing the industrywide conversation about outdoor recreation policy, participation, and sustainable business. FOR TWO DECADES, Salt Lake City has been our industry’s twice-a-year, home-away-from-home business trip and family reunion all rolled into one. The decision to move Outdoor Retailer to a new city is a testament to our industry. While we are businesses—some publicly traded and some private—that operate with profit-and-loss statements, we are also a strong community with deep values. The decision to move wasn’t easy or fast: It was a thoughtful, values-based decision that culminated with a bang this year. Our community is strong and we will continue to convene and make a big impact both in our new location and across the U.S. I have absolute confidence in that. So much has led to the decision to find a new home. It was last July at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, in fact, when we all celebrated #ElPrezatElCap: President Barack Obama’s iconic trip to Yosemite. There, he recognized the size of the outdoor recreation economy and committed to protecting the public lands on which our economy is built. And true to his word, as he left office, Obama designated several national monuments, including Utah’s Bears Ears, on the recommendation of then-Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell. Almost immediately, the Utah congressional delegation began to push back. And after President Donald Trump won the election in November, the
emboldened monument opponents turned up the heat on the incoming administration. The Utah legislature passed resolutions asking for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monuments to be rescinded, and our industry reacted by signaling that unless we could make progress in changing the minds of Utah’s elected officials, the show would move. Ultimately, it’s important to understand that Outdoor Retailer and Outdoor Industry Association decided to leave Utah not only to stand by our values but, equally important, to stand by our members. We had a groundswell of members say they wouldn’t come to this show or any future shows in Utah, and we had many members who committed to coming to this show—in an act of solidarity with their fellow businesses—but would likely not come if the show stayed past 2017. Moving the show was necessary to maintain a unified industry gathering and a healthy trade show. It’s also important to note that we have made every effort to depart with grace and gratitude while showing our pride and our convictions for what matters. At this Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, we’ll be highlighting the collaborations that make our industry unique, and I hope you’ll engage in the many opportunities to support public lands. How can you make your last Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake a meaningful one?

To the outdoor industry, protecting our nation’s public lands is our business! These vital lands are the very foundation of our massive outdoor recreation economy which employs over 7.6 million Americans and generates over $887 billion in consumer spending. Hear keynote speaker Secretary Sally Jewell rally the industry to use our political power to fight for public lands. Governor Steve Bullock will show us how outdoor recreation drives Montana’s economy. Also in the house are The North Face climbing athletes Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold. With humor and humility, they will share their adventures and bring to life why they advocate strongly for public lands.

GEARTRENDS GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT.
OUTDOOR CHIC Lifestyle apparel caters to outdoor enthusiasts who want to look the part—even when they’re not on the trail. BY COURTNEY HOLDEN

The trail is calling
With millennials looking for do-it-all pieces, lifestyle apparel continues to offer an elevated aesthetic that’s ready for a spur-of-the-moment outdoor romp. Look for heat-releasing features like micro holes and breathable fabrics in summer-specific garments, as well as dry-in-a-flash and wicking capabilities. “People want apparel that transitions easily from work or daily life into those quick ‘sessions’ and then back in time for social hour with friends,” says Larissa Rubin, a designer with Ibex. That fashion/function duality also shows up in lifestyle footwear, notes Janice Pilkington, sales associate at Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City, California. “We get a lot of people who come in and want a shoe that they could potentially run in, do some hiking in, and wear around town because it looks good.” And even if apparel isn’t built for the trail, “things that have the outdoorsy vibe” are most popular with customers, says Carly Beck, sales associate at The Bear Mountain in College Station, Texas. People want to look the role of the outdoor enthusiast, even when they’re crushing spreadsheets rather than trail.

Comfort continues to be a key feature in the category. “The brush feel of the clothing and fabrics has been huge for us,” says Cory McCall, co-owner of Outdoor 76 in Franklin, North Carolina. “If the hand isn’t right, it’s not going to sell as well.” This season, fashion-forward lifestyle brands report an evolution of the women’s athleisure apparel into swingy, fluid fabrics and looser fits. Bodyhugging silhouettes aren’t quite out of the picture, but wider-leg pants, bell sleeves, and asymmetrical styles will take center stage. These oversized options play into the macro trend of women’s wear adopting a more tomboyish, even genderless, look. The hoodie, which you’re sure to see everywhere at Summer Market in both men’s and women’s options, is a prime example. Patrick Anderson, men’s product line manager for OluKai, adds that this mentality extends to the workplace. “Traditional, hard-soled leather dress shoes are becoming dinosaurs as professionals trade them for the more comfortable, cushioned, and fleetfooted feel of a sneaker.”

1. Made out of Tweedster, a four-way stretch-woven that designer Kate Larramendy affectionately calls a “grandpahipster mashup,” Toad&Co’s Jasper Shirtjac ($139) is a must-have multiuse summer outer layer ready for the mountains or Main Street. Stretchy, sturdy, water repellant, and bluesign-approved … What more could a guy want? 2. Casual and breezy, the Sunnyside II Tunic Tank from Mountain Khakis ($75) carries a bit of bohemian appeal with its flared shape and relaxed fit. Embroidery detailing at the neck and hem add a girlish touch to this comfy top.

With built-in stretch for ease of movement, this quick-drying hybrid offers wicking properties and a mesh pocket lining, making it suitable for watersports of all kinds.

4. Decorative stitching and pleating are hot this season, and Stonewear’s Open Road Jacket ($112) is a prime example with its vintageinspired chevron yoke on the chest and upper back. A wide waistband and cuffs round out the lightweight, ready-to-move package (it’s made with the brand’s new stretch-woven material). 5. Full-grain nubuck leather gives Forsake’s new Range series ($140-$160) for men and women an elevated, streetsavvy style, but technical features like all-weather protection, a Vibram outsole, and XS Trek high-traction rubber make them a great option for a jaunt on the trail.

Now with Insect Shield protection, active cooling with xylitol, and UPF 50+ sun protection, ExOfficio’s updated men’s Bugs Away Sol Cool Hoody ($95) and women’s Bugs Away Sol Cool Kaliani Hoody ($90) help to beat the heat, the sun, and the bugs. Tuck valuables away in the hidden, zippered security pockets, located on the righthand sideseam in the men’s version and in the kangaroo pocket on the women’s version. 7. Pointelle detailing throughout the body of Krimson Klover’s Harbor Knit Hoodie ($108) gives this traditionally tomboyish style some feminine flair. But this piece isn’t flirt without function. Knit viscose and spandex construction equip it with stretch, breathability, and comfort.

PRETTY LITTLE LAYERS Technical apparel cuts weight while adding style. BY COURTNEY HOLDEN
Game of ounces
We all know one of them: the guy who whittles his toothbrush in half to save weight, the gal who drops an extra $7 to upgrade her camping spoon to titanium. They’re gram weenies, or “people who are so obsessed with keeping everything as light as possible that everything counts,” says Jim Tafuto, sales associate at Ragged Mountain Equipment in Intervale, New Hampshire. Thanks to these obsessive, er, particular, outdoor enthusiasts, performance apparel is following the trend usually seen in hardgoods. Keep an eye out for featherweight windwear, insulation layers, and shells.
Technically suave
Brands continue to inject body-mapping and active insulation technology into their garments, often with the help of the latest version of Gore-Tex Active— now with enhanced comfort, durability, and a 20 percent weight reduction. In many cases though, that function is hidden beneath a fashionable exterior. “Consumers want to wear their performance apparel to the climbing gym, yoga studio, group fitness class, and anywhere in between,” says Joanna Tomasino, Mammut softgoods category manager. Retailers report that interest in UPF-rated apparel is also high, especially among watersports enthusiasts who spend a lot of time under the sun.

The shell features the Gore-Tex Active 2.0 membrane touted for its balance of weather protection, venting capabilities, and light construction. Men’s (pictured) and women’s versions available.
“Super, super-compressible . . . it’s one of those features that’s almost expected nowadays,” says Austin Gibney, sales associate with Pikes Peak Outfitters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a result, more and more brands are offering über-lightweight jackets that pack up into themselves. These jackets are so small and unobtrusive that The North Face-sponsored ultrarunner Rob Krar notes, “you have no excuses not to bring one.”

Gone are the days of weighty, full-leather trekking boots with burly steel shanks. Thanks updates in footwear tech, brands can offer the same stability in a much lighter package. “In the outdoor realm, we’re seeing that saturation of the ultralight, ultracushion running shoe category,” says Kevin Ganey, manager of Mountain Supply in Bend, Oregon. He calls it a “crosspollination” of shedding grams “without sacrificing sturdiness or grip.” The main reason: A lighter shoe often means a more comfortable shoe. That’s why you’ll also see an emphasis on comfort cropping up in new shockabsorbing midsole foams, footbeds with built-in arch support, and flexible outsoles. Several brands—Khombu, Vaude, adidas Outdoor, and Mammut among them—are opting for knit uppers made with everything from polyester mesh to recycled ocean plastic. This woven technique reduces
the amount of reinforcements, seams, and overlays needed to hold the shoe together (thereby decreasing overall weight), while also improving comfort with natural stretch.
Stick to it
Solid traction matters. It can save you from a lifethreatening fall, broken bones, or just looking like a doofus, points out Shannon Dunfey, social media director and sales associate at Great Glen Outfitters in Gorham, New Hampshire, whose customers look for grippy soles “so they don’t eat it in the mud.” This season, outsoles feature a host of tractionenhancing rubbers and lug patterns to keep outdoor enthusiasts on their feet. Among others, look for Aquagrip from KEEN, Gripex Tri-Traction from Mammut, and the Vibram Contact Grip Outsole with MegaGrip Compound on select models from Vasque. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Made out of reclaimed and recycled ocean plastic and combined with a breathable, nonslip sole, the Terrex CC Voyager Parley ($120) from adidas Outdoor is ideal for water sports like SUP, rafting,

The Brewer 2.0 ($100) from Astral is a prime example of yet another footwear trend: trailready shoes that fit in around town. A sticky G Rubber outsole provides traction on a variety of surfaces, while holes along the midsole, vamp, and tongue drain water and ventilate.

The so-called pinnacle user—a big-tripping, big-spending outdoors aspirant—is on the way out as the guiding force behind gear development. So who’s in? You—and however you define what’s best in the outdoors. “There was a time 10-plus years ago, where, if you weren’t hardcore, you weren’t in the club,” says Jay Getzel, president of Mountainsmith. “The industry has been helping welcome the outside person to the outdoors.” Brands and retailers are looking for new opportunity in the gap between the elite and everyone else. “There seems to be a growing distinction between backpacking and camping,” says Emma Hunter, buyer at Backcountry.com. “One is heavily weight-conscious and one is heavily comfort-focused.” Hunter notes that the emphasis on technology, durability, and functionality in shelters remain paramount, but “there’s more of a consumer acceptance for what’s right for their pursuit. In years past it felt like customers were always gravitating towards ‘pinnacle,’ operating in that aspirational space, whereas now they seem to be more practical in their decision-making.”

Is it a hammock, a tent, or a bug shelter? The answer is

yes. With a setup time as fast as seven seconds (with some practice), the Flying Tent ($399) goes up quickly to get you out of the weather and into relaxation mode. Unlike many hammocks, no trees are no problem: Thanks to a poled setup, the 4-pound shelter stands on its own when there are no suitable anchors around, making it a quiver-of-one for three-season use. (Note: Flying Tent exhibits with Tree Pod.)
3. ENO’s new ENOLink ($30) makes hammocking even more enjoyable for two. The ENOLink lets you set up two hammocks using only two anchor points. Aluminum alloy spreader bars let the hammocks hang adjacent to each other, keeping your companion close at hand, but not too close. 4. There are those for whom chasing the summit isn’t an aspiration so much
as a weekend plan. This shelter is for them. NEMO Equipment’s Chogori 3P ($850) mountaineering tent sets up faster and weighs less than most tents in its rarified class. Most of the ounce savings comes from the lightweight, silicone-coated fabric—the treatment makes it twice as strong as commonly used polyester—and an integrated fly. Cool feature: Zip two Chogoris together to establish
a big, bomber basecamp anywhere your dreams take you. 5. Want comfort? Look up. Kelty’s six-person Sequoia ($350) has enough headroom for campers up to 6 feet, 6 inches to stand inside. Two steel poles make for a quick setup and a big, D-shape door allows easy exits. Interior touches include pockets for lights and gear. It also comes in a fourperson version for $250.

Go to any frontcountry campground these days, and you’ll see hammocks decorating the trees like tinsel. Get ready for the backcountry version of that, too. Hammocks offer a novel way to sleep, and nothing says comfort like swaying gently between two trees during siesta. Hunter of Backcountry.com says, “core customers such as fishermen/outdoorsmen, seem to be discovering hammocks as an option, and approaching camping differently.” She adds that big gains in market share are now stabilizing into steady growth. And while hammocks are still something of a novelty, everyone seems to be trying them, from the core wilderness camper to those who want to laze around local parks.

conscious backpackers out there. That’s who Mountain Hardwear is targeting with its new Ghost Whisperer ($580$610), which uses 900-fill down and 10-denier nylon to unseat Western Mountaineering’s UltraLite as the lightest traditional 20-degree bag on the market (by half an ounce). The regular 20°F Ghost Whisperer weighs a mere 1 pound, 12.5 ounces.

Space Cowboy 45 ($140-160), a synthetic-fill bag that works alone or as part of a system. By itself, it handles summer, but paired with Therm-a-Rest’s Corus 35 Quilt, it’s three-season ready. The result is versatile warmth. “The last thing you want to do is compromise your sleep system when you’re miles from nowhere,” says Jim Giblin, category manager for Therm-a-Rest. “The layering system is the best option for miles of hiking when the temperature can dramatically fluctuate.”
5. The Jazz Luxury ($350) from NEMO has the same dimensions as a queen-size bed. But the comfort doesn’t stop at size. With an insulated blanket fold that mimics the turned-down edge of comforters in home bedding, quilted mattress top, removable sheet, and twoway zips for the top quilt, it combines the best attributes from the brand’s line of twoperson bags. Tipping the scale at 8 pounds, it’s most definitely not for the trail. But for campers who don’t stray far from the car, it’s a sleep-tight breakthrough.
PHOTOS BY COURTESY TK
The comfort focus also speaks to a larger trend of shifting priorities among consumers. While there will always be a place in the market for dialed, lightweight bags, aspiration is tending toward the attainable—and brands are recognizing the need to aim innovation at the middle of the pack, rather than the elite user. “Our customers are realizing that they don’t need the lightest, most expensive gear that will get shredded in a year or two,” says John Ingerson of Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden, Colorado. “That gear is often uncomfortable, as well. Why not have comfortable, durable, well-designed products that make camping more enjoyable?”

1. Seeking to boost its eco cred and reach customers who care, Sierra Designs is discontinuing PFCs across its 2018 bag line. “PFCs have been shown to be extremely persistent chemicals both in the environment and in human tissue, and have been shown to cause health issues in several studies,” says Suzanne Hermann, spokeswoman for Sierra Designs. The new Nitro mummy bag 0°F ($370) uses 800-fill DriDown with a 15-denier shell and liner, and weighs 2 pounds, 8 ounces.
Last year saw more brands debut two-person bags than ever before, a response to demand from a new generation of outdoorsfolk who favor like-home comfort. Chris Reynolds, NEMO Equipment’s Product Line Manager, explains, “camping, including car camping, glamping, and overnight tailgating, has seen an increase in popularity. People are spending more time with family and friends on weekend camping trips where weight isn’t much of a concern.” NEMO has seen an approximately 20-percent increase in yearover-year volume in the double sleeping bag market, Reynolds says. Josh Stephen, hardgoods buyer at the Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington, Vermont, confirms they’ve also seen an uptick in the sales of double sleeping bags, in addition to the pads that go along with them.

TAKE A LOAD OFF
Comfort supreme
Backpacks continue to address fit and weight, allowing for more comfortable travel. BY ERME CATINO
What’s the easiest way to make a pack better? Make it more comfortable. That’s what Jon Ingerson of Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden, Colorado says his customers are looking to first. “Comfort, durability, features, and how a company stands behind its products seem to be the main drivers,” he says. For spring 2018, brands continue to move the needle on comfort by incorporating better ventilation and suspension.
Lighter loads
Updated fabrics such as Dyneema and 330 Lite Plus Cordura are allowing companies to shave ounces from their offerings. Erik Hamerschlag, Osprey’s senior product line manager, notes: “It’s challenging, but we’re always trying to improve the [carry] efficiency. A well-designed pack can be lighter and more durable, or it can embody useful new features without gaining weight.”

The Lumina 60 ($270) is a women’s thru-hiker pack that brings together highperformance fibers with durable outer fabrics. 3. Mystery Ranch’s Terraframe 80 ($450) is an expeditionsize pack with comfort and durability to match. Taking cues from the company’s military

Ortovox’s new SwisswoolTec-Knit Back System combines wool and foam at key points of body contact, designed to absorb and disperse moisture better than a traditional foam and mesh backpanel. “Closed-cell foam backpanels

The 38-liter Greenland Top Large ($150), made with Fjällräven’s G-1000 waxed fabric, is equally at home in the backcountry and city,
thanks to its top-loading design with four easy-access pockets on the outside and a laptop sleeve. 6. With 30 packs debuting at Summer Market, Deuter will claim perhaps the largest rollout of new products. Among them is the new hydration-compatible Speed Lite ($60-130) line. With its Delrin U-frame and 3D foam, they’re versatile enough to use for hiking, mountaineering, trekking, and skiing.

LEARNING THE ROPES

New climbing gear aims to get more newbies on the rocks and into the gyms. BY RYAN WICHELNS
The great indoors

The increasing popularity of climbing gyms isn’t a new story, but gym-specific gear is finally starting to catch up to the particular demands of the indoor setting—and the climbers who are flocking there in ever-larger numbers. “Gyms attract newer climbers, so simplified equipment that includes more safety features makes the experience safer and more userfriendly,” says Bo Beck, manager at The Desert Rat, a climbing gym in St. George, Utah. Look for new, easier-to-use assisted-braking belay devices that add another layer of protection and durability for the beginner (like Edelweiss’s new Kinetic). Heavier pieces (like Black Diamond’s new, 92-gram belay device, the ATC Pilot), are also more comfortable and ergonomic for heavy gym mileage.

1. Designed for kids 65 pounds or lighter, the Petzl Ouistiti ($60) harness is easy to put on and fit, but kids won’t be able to manipulate the buckles on their own, so it’s safe, too. The perforated foam structure and the front tie-in point favor comfort while the rear attachment point adds another way to secure a youngster. 2. Black Diamond’s Momentum [$50] has been a staple allaround climbing harness for

the circumference combined with stronger, heavier stuff on top) makes the helmet light and compact. Reinforced sides, front, and rear mean the helmet protects more of your head, a necessity for use across different disciplines.
3. Durable and versatile, the Petzl Boreo helmet ($65) is a multisport machine, designed for climbing, mountaineering, caving, via ferrata, and canyoneering. Its hybrid construction (more durable but lighter foam around
4. The Edelweiss Kinetic ($TBD) is an assisted-braking belay device designed for both lead and top rope climbing. It features an aluminum body with stainless steel cams (shaped to ensure strong, responsive
braking when needed), axis points, and rivets. 5. Designed for kids, the Vertige Junior helmet from Edelweiss ($TBD) features a tough plastic outer shell with a protective foam layer. This brain bucket features 10 large vents and an adjustable inner liner designed to cradle smaller craniums. Also nice: The liner can be removed and washed, a welcome touch for fleet helmets at kids’ adventure camps or parks.
6. While a lot of climbing shoes may have a bent toward gym users, La Sportiva claims their new Geckogym ($110) is the first designed specifically for indoor use. The Frixion XF 2.0 outsole won’t mark up indoor surfaces and is easier (and thus less expensive) to resole because the toe rubber separates from the heel at the arch. Also cool: When the shoe gets stinky, just throw it into the washing machine with your jeans and t-shirts.

Retailers report that the average age of new climbers continues to get younger and younger—something many attribute to the newfound popularity of gyms—so manufacturers are catering more to the kid crowd. “I’ve seen a tremendous growth with kids learning to climb,” Beck says. “Adults who learned 10 to 15 years ago now want to involve their children.” What’s normally a pretty small selection will see a big boost this season. “Petzl has been making full-body kid harnesses long before the popularity boom that climbing is currently experiencing,” says Ben Eaton, marketing manager at Petzl.“With more and more families getting into the sport and involving their toddlers, this generates a need for more variety in climbing gear for all ages.”

Boards and boats blend durability and versatility. BY TYLER VANDERMOLEN

It took a while for the tech behind inflatable SUPs to catch up with demand for easily transportable paddleboards, but that day has undeniably arrived. Bladders with higher thread counts, better seams, and lighter materials have improved the quality of inflatables to the point where class leaders now approach epoxy boards in performance and durability—all at a much lower price than their molded counterparts. “I’ve been living and breathing this stuff for a decade now,” says Mike Mudd, founder of SUP retailer Stand on Liquid in Bend, Oregon. “The development in inflatables in recent years is just huge. They perform so much better now, and people are buying in.”
Armor all
Paddling with the current often means bumping into rocks and unseen obstacles, and from SUPs to kayaks, consumers want lighter-weight products that can handle the abuse. “We figured out real quick that a non-durable board makes little sense, especially in the Colorado paddling environment,” says John Poppleton, owner of Denver’s Surf ’SUP. “The trick is to build durable products that still have sophisticated shaping for responsive performance.” Advances in vacuum-molded carbon and thermoformed polycarbonate PVC construction are driving the segment toward boards that can do both.
Cast a line
The expanding market share of stand-up paddleboarding has spread to fishing, and a new generation of boards will meet the needs of anglers who want to stand. These SUPs put a premium on stability, load capacity, and attachment points. “Because of our location, fishing SUPs are the single most popular boards we sell,” says Joe Butler, owner of Black Creek Outfitters in Jacksonville, Florida.
1. The Jimmy Styks Puffer inflatable SUP ($699) is constructed with dual layer fusion, which promises greater durability and rigidity. This 11-foot, 6-inch board is 31 inches wide, but rolls up for easy portability. It comes with everything you need to get out on the water: an adjustable carbon fiber travel paddle, safety leash, board bag, pump, repair kit, and removable Click ‘N Go touring fin.

2. Oru Kayak’s revised Bay ST ($1,599) is a playful, stable 12foot vessel that’s nimble enough to maneuver through some tricky situations. Plus, there’s plenty of room to lash gear for day trips or short camping excursions. Oru’s patented origami-inspired design allows you to transform your boat to a compact box in just a few minutes (with a bit of practice), solving storage-space problems that often come with SUPs.
3. Don’t worry about bouncing it off the dock, rocks, or other underwater obstacles in the pursuit of fish. With its thermoformed construction, the CROSS Fish ($1,500) from BIC Sport will keep right on cruising. “The BIC boards are the ones we rent most often because they’re just so tough,” Butler says. The CROSS Fish has a 350-pound capacity and a keeled nose for added stability, and it keeps your
fishing gear secured with 12 attachment points and three integrated tracks. 4. Chaco’s all-new Z/Canyon 2 ($120) turns the brand’s classic, all-purpose sandal into a technical water shoe. A 3D-molded TPU heel holster keeps your foot secure in water or on land, and a runninginspired kinetic rebound plate in the Cloud 2.0 midsole makes this pair of sandals cushier than
ever. Available for both men and women. 5. Paddle to the picnic with lunch and a friend on Red Paddle Co.’s Voyager Tandem ($1,900). This 15-foot inflatable SUP has room on board for two paddling adults and their cooler. For a family outing, remove cargo points in the center of the paddleboard to make room for your little one (or your dog).

SHADES OF STYLE

Performance eyewear gets a makeover. 2
BY ERME CATINO
Rounding the edges Square and wrap frames are moving aside as fashion begins to play a larger role in summer eyewear. Lauren Anderson, accessories buyer at evo.com, says she’s seeing “smaller, rounded frames replacing some of the Wayfarer [styles], with more active sunglasses getting a face lift to look like their lifestyle counterparts.” However, all isn’t lost for those committed to the classic wrap frame, a utility style that shields peripheral glare and wind. Anderson notes that this year she can’t keep certain wrap frames in stock. Jay Vasquez, eyewear buyer at Backcountry.com adds, “The big trend that will continue into future seasons is fashionfocused styles with sport features, like lightweight frames with sticky rubber ear and nose pads.”

2. The Anacapa ($199) from Kaenon has a classic wrap style with a polarized and mirrored lens. Thanks to a curved shape, and large size that maximizes protection, the Anacapa is designed for year-round outdoor performance, from the trail to the skin track to the river. At Summer Market, Kaenon will also debut four new colored, mirrored, and polarized lenses to accompany its seven new frame styles.
3. Costa’s partnership with OCEARCH, a world scientific leader in tracking great white and tiger sharks, is the impetus for its new collection of frames—Costa will donate a portion of sales to the nonprofit. The Half Moon’s ($249) bio-resin frame has a green- or blue-mirrored lens that’s 99.9-percent polarized— blocking shortwave blue light and reducing dull yellow light for better visibility on water.
4. The Vettron ($65-70) from Optic Nerve features the new SinglePivot Hinge System. It allows the user to swap between the two lenses that come with each pair by disengaging the gate that connects the lens and arms of the frame. The distinctive, color-blocked look fits right in around town, yet the curved frame has a sporty fit and an integrated rubber bridge, eliminating slip during sweaty activities.
5. Not everyone is into the Jackie Kennedy look and, for some people, oversized frames can seemingly swallow the face. This season Tifosi Optics takes its best-selling Veloce frame and delivers it in a smaller package. The Vero ($70-80), suited for smaller faces, is designed with a lightweight and flexible Grilamid TR-90 frame with a scratch- and shatterproof polycarbonate lens.

1. Popticals makes performance shades that pack down to practically nothing, thanks to the FL2 Micro-Rail System. The frames separate at the bridge, then lenses slip into a compact spooning position. The temples fold down, too. The Popair ($189-$239) takes the traditional aviator design and tweaks it for outdoor performance—available in six frame colors and six lens options.
Invigorated lenses
Lens technologies that accentuate colors, such as Smith’s ChromaPop and Oakley’s Prizm, have been popular. Vasquez explains that in addition to the throwback frames with round designs and double bridges, “flash lenses (colored mirrored lenses) are big—I think this is a play off the fishing industry.” Vasquez says that while ocean-oriented brands have had mirrored lenses for years, he has noticed more fashion-focused brands incorporate them, too. “The consumer is becoming comfortable with more color pop,” he says.

Backcountry power approaches rechargeable integration.

Just as our mobile devices operate on exclusively rechargeable systems, so too will our outdoor tech. Alkaline batteries are falling out of favor as consumers grow more trusting of rechargeable lithium-ions. “Most of our clientele is looking primarily at being able to recharge once they have run their system down,” says Jason Layh of Tahoe’s Alpenglow Sports.
Share the love
As consumers move away from alkaline batteries, they also more toward more USB compatibility. This feature now allows power to be stored and shared between devices, so you can do more with fewer devices and you’ll have less to haul along with you. “More than ever, people want the ability to charge up their essential devices via USB,” says Goal Zero General Manager Bill Harmon. “We’re also keeping tabs on how USB-C [smaller, more efficient USB connectors that allow for the transport of both data and energy] will be incorporated into popular outdoor products.”

This 100-lumen lantern features BioLite’s signature sundial and a 360-degree kickstand, which help you position the panel to optimize charge efficiency. It runs up to 24 hours on a single charge. Party time? There’s a color mode for festive lighting.

2. Ultralight at just a smidge over an ounce, the Petzl Bindi ($60) delivers up to 200 lumens in a package that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Its battery charges via a USB cable to keep it juiced up and ready for wherever the trails take you. The minimalist headband dispenses with thick elastic bands, offering instead a thinner cord that adjusts quickly, like a sunglasses strap.
3. The Radiant 200 Collapsible Lantern + Flashlight ($30) from Nite Ize packs a lot of light into a little space. Use the carbiner clip to hitch it high for a 200-lumen lantern (there’s an additional down-facing light for hanging over a table), or slide it closed for handheld light. 4. Van-dwellers, RVers, and road warriors: You know that sometimes solar panels are not
an option. For those times when you just can’t afford to run out of juice on the road, Goal Zero’s new Yeti Hybrid ($TBD) system is the answer. It combines the time-tested Yeti 1400 Lithium Power Station (1425 watt-hour capacity), which can power virtually any device, with the Yeti Fuel, a mini-generator that can refill the power station several times on 1.5 gallons of unleaded.
5. For those who want a headlamp with an alkaline battery backup, UCO Gear debuts its Vapor+ ($50). The neoprene strap promises a comfortable ride, and illumination up to 300 lumens means you’ll see what’s ahead. Charge its on-board lithiumion battery via a micro-USB, but tuck a few AAAs in your pack when you’re off the grid for a while.

Solar continues to increase its share of the portable power market as technical innovations have improved to the point where 5- and 10-watt panels can power a smartphone or GPS just about indefinitely. “We are all seeing consumer participation in solar double and triple year after year,” said BioLite CEO and founder Jonathan Cedar. “We’ve got clear evidence that folks are becoming more and more comfortable relying on it.”

COOK SMARTER, EAT BETTER
Buyers demand a better cooking experience and easier transport. BY TYLER VANDERMOLEN
All together now
Consumers are increasingly looking for single gear solutions to meet needs for many different kinds of trips, hence the recent success of nesting cookware kits, and stoves, utensils, and dishes that have the smallest and lightest possible packed size. “Products that offer multiple easy-to-use accessories plus utensils are doing well right now, especially from the big-name brands,” says Scott O’Brien, co-owner of Jackson Hole outdoor retailer Skinny Skis. That makes sense, since buying cups, bowls, cookware, and stoves together is typically both lighter and cheaper than assembling a kit from individual pieces.
1
Dinner party
The small, water-boiling personal stove systems that once dominated the market are trending out (Doug Sanders of Mountain Safety Research says that they represent less than 50 percent of sales so far in 2017). So what’s in? Stoves that allow for a greater variety of cooking experiences for larger groups of people. Not coincidentally, this is occurring at the same time that consumers are demanding higher-quality food in the backcountry, whether they’re rehydrating freezedried fare or cooking a packaged meal. “More than ever, consumers want real food on the trail,” says Sara Lawhead, product manager at Jetboil. “At the end of a long day, the ideal meal is easy to prepare yet still hot and filling and tasty.”
Personal filtration has become a saturated category (excuse the pun), so brands are looking to distinguish their offerings by adding versatility—especially the ability to provide both immediate clean water and storage capacity for later. Gravity filters have seen a recent uptick as consumers look for devices that can produce lots of drinking water without requiring a lot of work. “People are wanting larger amounts of water with ease— volume without effort—and that’s what gravity filters do,” says Owen Mesdag, manager for water and cookware at MSR. “We’re also seeing a decrease in pump filter interest because they’re slower and require work.”

1. The Kuchoma Grill ($180) from Primus allows users to have a backyard barbecue experience anywhere in the outdoors. It’s light and compact enough for easy transport without compromising performance. Just like a standard barbecue, the Kuchoma Grill provides both direct and indirect heat and a removable grill grate and drip tray allow for easy cleanup and maintenance. It also runs on fuel canisters just like your smaller camping stove.
2. In our packs and cars, space comes at a premium. That’s why nesting pots make sense: They cram a lot of utility into a tiny space. This year, Sea to Summit debuts its Alpha Series Cookware. With swiveling handles, the individual pots and pans fit together. Or buy one of the new Alpha Cooksets, such as the 4.2 ($120), to bundle all the cookware, cups, and bowls four people need.

Food delivery isn’t yet available in the backcountry, but Good To-Go’s dehydrated gourmet meals ($6.75$12.50) might be the next best thing. The latest dish, Chicken Gumbo, joins other tasty, exotic recipes like Mexican Quinoa Bowl and Bibimbap (spicy Korean mixed rice). Many meals are vegan and/or gluten-free, and all can be ready in 15 to 20 minutes.

DIG INTO OUR HIGHLIGHTS OF SUMMER MARKET’S EVENTS, EDUCATION AND MORE
Education DAY 2
Retailer Skills Course Education Schedule (UMOCA) Retailer Skills Course (RSC) is inspired outdoor specialty retail leadership training for today’s ultracompetitive marketplace. With sessions led by successful outdoor retailers and facilitated by The Mann Group, RSC is part seminar, parts skills development, and all about leading and driving profitability in your store. The theme for Summer Market is “Creating a Sales Environment.” Each session is from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m daily and stands alone or builds on previous sessions to maximize impact and insight. Lunch is provided.
DAY 1, WEDNESDAY, JULY 26 GEAR Sales Program Overview
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. When it comes to new levels of store success, GEAR leads the way. With three steps—TEACH, PRACTICE AND FEEDBACK—each GEAR component builds on the one before it. And all components combine to reinforce each other. This dynamic combination creates a powerful training experience that helps your team increase sales and customer satisfaction.
DAY 2, THURSDAY, JULY 27 GEAR Sales Program Sections G & E
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. It’s all about the G and E in GEAR. We’ll learn and collaborate on the first two GEAR segments. G: GET INVOLVED. The key to getting involved with customers is creating a comfortable environment. You’ll learn how to teach your staff to make customers feel at ease as soon as they enter your store. E: EDIT. This segment is all about information. Teach your staff to learn the technical knowledge and listening skills they need to move gear.
DAY 3, FRIDAY, JULY 28 GEAR Sales Program Sections A & R
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. It’s time for the A & R, the final two GEAR training segments. A: APPEAL. The best way to make the product appeal to the customer is interaction. Teaching staff to be effective in the appeal phase also allows your staff to be confident in overcoming objections the customer might have. R: RELATIONSHIPS. Research proves that it takes far more effort and expense to attract new customers than to retain and develop business with existing customers. The R gives you and your staff the knowledge needed to build the long-term relationships that build success.
DAY 4, SATURDAY, JULY 29 Create an In-Store Sales Training Program
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Research shows it takes between 21 to 28 days to learn a new habit. That doesn’t sound like too long, but the same research also indicates that people tend to drop out of a new behavior after two weeks if they don’t go out of their way to keep it going. In this session, you’ll learn how to roll out a program in the short amount of time you have every day, a program with successful habits that will stick.

When Women Lead
Coalition Snow and Wild Women’s Project 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. The statistics are bleak— only 4 percent of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs and women represent just 37 percent
of the National Park Service workforce—yet their power and potential is unlimited. In this panel, we will explore what it takes to change this reality and we will envision what the outdoor industry could look and feel like if more women were in leadership positions. Our panelists will discuss how they got to where they are today, what needs to change to support others in securing leadership positions, how we can find and build allies, and what specific steps we can take to transform the outdoor industry into one that is more equitable for all. Those who believe in an equitable and revitalized outdoor industry are encouraged to attend.
Activate Your Story Cheat Codes
Brian Hennessy, Thread Creative 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. In video games, cheat codes allow players to bypass levels and unlock rewards. Seasoned writers know that there are also story cheat codes that allow you to bypass bad habits and unlock hidden interest in your writing. And just like gaming cheat codes, they’re easy to use and they get immediate results. This interactive workshop unlocks four powerful writing cheat codes that will make your writing—whether it’s a presentation, blog post,

TREND + DESIGN CENTER SCHEDULE
(Level One – Booth #155)
DAY 1 The Science of Curiosity
Jason Belaire 10 - 11 a.m. We need to be able to move into the realm of curiosity. Our best work comes from letting our minds go and losing our inhibitions. Yet, following curiosity can be hard. We must dive deep into our “selves” to discover what makes us creative and able to provide design solutions that are meaningful and profitable. You just don’t know where this path will lead you.
Odor Control: Myths vs. Facts
Lisa Owen, VP of Global Textiles, Microban International 11 - 12 p.m. Learn the dirty little secret about silver (and other odor control myths exposed). Join us for one hour as we demystify odor control technologies, global testing standards, and marketing claims. Odor is a universal problem, and customers demand a solution. Make sure you are well educated and know what your technology options are in the marketplace.
How to Define Innovation
Jason Belaire 2 - 3 p.m. Why can’t we grasp innovation? It consumes our meetings from the top down. We market the hell out of it. It’s something we can’t stop thinking about. How do we reach the space where we learn to think differently in an industry that demands continual design output? How can we learn to truly innovate, and not just disrupt but also advance the industry in a meaningful way?
DAY 2 Great Design Creates Great Experiences, Not Just Great Product
Jason Belaire 10 - 11 a.m. It’s all about experiencing a product—and BioLite is the best example of this.
Lauren Williams, trend forecaster and fashion marketer with Cotton Incorporated 1 - 2 p.m. Cotton Incorporated’s annual active forecast details cutting-edge lifestyle inspiration, inspirational color stories, and the latest cotton fabric innovations for the 2019-2020 season.
Brand Identity that Syncs with Today’s Consumers
Panel discussion by Jason Belaire 2 - 3 p.m. As people have less time for shopping and are opting for more efficiency, brands are scrambling to compensate for lost revenue in other ways. Many are reaching for “top of mountain” status to justify higher price points and increase profit margins. Come to this panel to discuss how brand identity is vital to connect with today’s consumers.
DAY 3 How to be Inclusive with Big-Picture Projects While Leaving Ego at the Door
Jason Belaire 10 - 11 a.m. The outdoor industry can often lack inclusivity. As brands work harder to become more diverse, it’s important for leaders to remember to be inclusive to all team members. Come to this panel to learn how you can set aside your ego at the door and empower your employees along the way.
How to Sell an Idea
Panel discussion lead by Jason Belaire 2 - 3 p.m. During the design, social media, and marketing processes, healthy debate is always a good thing. But dissuading someone from moving forward with an idea can be even harder than figuring out how to sell one. During this panel, we’ll dicuss how to leverage internal advocates, how to frame dissent, and how to persuade company leaders to listen to the voice of reason.

AWARD BEST OF BOOTH
ORD
Best of Booth Summer Market
2017
S
IMPLE FACT: Engaging booths get more foot traffic. Those feet carry eyeballs, and eyeballs turn into good impressions, new partnerships, and sales opportunities. Booths offer a chance for brands to show off creativity, draw attention to their stories, and demonstrate their particular flavor of aspiration. Join us this year in celebrating the best among them. OR Daily scouts will be scouring the show floor for this year’s crop of winners in three categories. Help steer us in the right direction (toward you, of course).
WINTER MARKET BoB WINNERS SMALL BOOTH
The Normal Brand
Casual comfort, warm tones, and flattering light turned The Normal Brand’s small wooden box into a place you want to stop for a while.
MID-SIZE BOOTH
YETI
The line doesn’t lie: A livedin, brand-friendly vibe and discounts on coveted gear won the day at the YETI roadhouse.
Think your booth beats all comers? Tell us why and you could win your very own BoB Award, a commemorative 64-ounce growler from Hydro Flask (filled with something tasty). Submit nominations to bit.do/ORSM17bestbooth.
96
Mountain Hardwear
Sectioning a huge space into a series of intimate ones— plus a slacklining exhibition and the view from the top— made Mountain Hardwear’s new booth a must-explore.

TRAVEL - THE FJÄLLRÄVEN WAY
Our founder Åke Nordin loved travel and exploration. To facilitate this passion, he started creating gear and equipment for trekking, camping and exploring the world and in 1960 he founded a company named after his favorite animal, the Arctic Fox. Today, as then, we design and test product in Sweden to be worn around the world. On every continent and in every condition, from city to summit.
