Summer Attainment Camps Partnership working with WDC Education Department
Welcome
Welcome to Issue 2 of our Active Schools Focus magazine. Complimenting our social media feeds this issue takes a look back at the second half of the 2017-18 academic year, pulling together a number of the highlights and good news stories. We continue to contribute to sportscotland’s vision for a world class sporting system for everyone in Scotland via our key priorities of People, Profile & Participation - and have seen some excellent work on all fronts. I’d like to thank my team of Active Schools Coordinators and our small army of volunteers and coaches for their hard work in recent months, providing opportunities for children and young people to be active.
I’m delighted to report that for the 2017-18 academic year we reached a new personal best of almost 106,000 attendances at extra-curricular sessions. That’s an increase of over 5,000 attendances compared to last year. We also saw the number of different young people participating grow to almost 6,500 (47% of the school roll). See the infographic on page 13 for more information on impact. Our WD School Games project for school sport competition continues to go from strength to strength and recent months saw lots of fantastic performances at our School Games finals in various sports. You can find out more about our champions from page 19.
During the school summer holidays we worked closely with our colleagues in the council’s Education, Learning and Attainment Department to run a number of multi-sport camps in some of our most deprived communities. These were well attended despite the glorious sunshine, which was great to see! Overall 2017-18 has been another good year for the service and we look forward to 2018-19. I hope you enjoy this issue. PEOPLE In this section‌ Volunteers in Profile Celebrating some of our fantastic People who help us to get children & young people active!
Young Sports Stars Celebrating the sporting achievements and commitment of pupils in the Year of Young People 2018.
Volunteers In Profile Volunteers are the heart of our Active Schools programme. The hundreds of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers, school staff, students, parents and secondary pupils who make up our volunteer network provide a vast and varied number of opportunities for children and young people to participate in sport across the region. In addition to delivering or assisting with extra-curricular clubs, many of our volunteers also assist with our competitions and festivals throughout the school year. Meet some of our fantastic volunteers!... The Active Schools Volunteer of the Month for May 2018 was Nicola Rowan. Nicola was a probationary teacher at St. Martin’s Primary School in Alexandria and started volunteering just weeks into her new job. During 2017-18, Nicola delivered Football, Multi-Sports and Netball Clubs for Primary 4-7 pupils giving these children the opportunity to get more active, more often beyond the school day. Yvonne Macdonald, Active Schools Coordinator said “Nicola has been fantastic and her willingness to give up her own time has made a huge difference to the pupils of St. Martin’s Primary School. The P4-7 children have been able to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular sports and compete against other schools at our festivals which they loved!” The Active Schools Volunteer of the Month for June 2018 was Grant Lang. Grant is a parent volunteer at St Mary’s Primary School in Duntocher and started volunteering in February 2018 to assist with all Athletics competitions. Grant has been absolutely inspirational in the sporting success of St. Mary’s triumph at the Primary 6 Sportshall Athletics and Cross Country Relay teams; bringing knowledge, enthusiasm and passion to the after-school clubs and the school as a whole. Grant said: “Having previously worked as a sports coach it was a great opportunity to share my skills by becoming a volunteer. I’ve really enjoyed working with the children, and sharing the success with them at these festivals and competitions”.
Young Sports Stars 2018 is the Scottish Government’s first ever Year of Young People (#YOYP2018) and aims to inspire all ages through its young people (aged 8-26 years) by celebrating their achievements, valuing their contributions to communities and creating chances for them to shine on a local & global stage. We have been asking schools to nominate ‘Young Sports Stars’ focusing on pupils who have excelled in physical activity and sport during 2017-18. This has been a great success, with schools from across the region getting involved and nominating their pupils. Meet our Young Sports Stars for May - August below...
MAY Our very first Young Sports Stars of the Month were Braydon Downs and Callum Crumley from Christie Park Primary School! Braydon organises and assists in the delivery of lunchtime football coaching to P1-5 classes. At playtime, he can be found organising playground games and encouraging children to get involved. Callum is a key member of the School Sport Committee which meets regularly to discuss health and wellbeing in the school and takes on a lot of the admin duties that are involved. He also assists with lunchtime football and playground games - and is a Walk Leader.
JUNE Grace McFarlane, Isla McIntyre and Niamh Marsland from St. Patrick’s Primary School were our Young Sports Stars of the Month for June 2018. The girls attend Dawns Dance Academy which was one of only two dance schools in Scotland to go through to compete in the World Dance Championships this summer! Grace, Isla and Niamh, along with the rest of the dance troupe, travelled to Barcelona in June for 5 days of competition at the World Championship and trained most days in preparation.
Young Sports Stars JULY Our Active Schools Young Sports Star of the Month for July 2018 was Skye Kane from Lennox Primary School! Skye is in Primary 5/6 and has excelled in her chosen sport of Judo through attending Osaka Kwai Judo Club where she has been a member for 4 years. Skye has already gained her orange belt and trains hard 4 times per week, including a session with the Scotland squad in Bellahouston. She is aiming to achieve her black belt and ideally a place on a future Great Britain Olympic Judo Team!
AUGUST We were delighted to announce that our Young Sports Stars of the Month for August 2018 were Hayleigh Diggines, Jolene McCann and Karis Downie from Kilbowie Primary School! The girls were nominated for their commitment to their school netball team. All are very dedicated, attending all training sessions and matches and are real team players – encouraging and supporting their team mates wherever possible. All 3 girls are very talented and able to play in a number of positions, making them invaluable to the team. Well done girls!

Area Update - Clydebank Throughout the year, eight Clydebank primary schools have had curriculum input from the Gaelic Football Development Officer through Glasgow Gaels Gaelic football club. These sessions culminated in a P6/7 festival in June attended by all schools . The club are part of the new Clydebank Community Sports Hub and are aiming to develop their junior section prior to the new premises being opened. Glasgow Fever Basketball Club launched a new satellite community session from Whitecrook Primary School for OHR and Whitecrook pupils. This has been successful with 12 children attending on a regular basis. The hope is to start a number of satellite sessions and develop competitive matches across Clydebank to increase participation. In relation to our WD School games programme for school sport, the final Clydebank football festival took place in May with all 14 schools taking part. This was the last time the P7 pupils got to represent their school before moving onto high school so it was great we had such a sunny day for it.
The Clydebank Netball leagues also came to an end with the trophies and medals presented at the Netball Playoff Festival. Kilbowie were victorious in the C League, Edinbarnet took home the trophy in the B league and Linnvale were Champions for a second year in a row for the A League. The School Games Netball Final took place at Clydebank Leisure centre in June with over 150 friends and family there to support their teams and witness Linnvale be crowned Netball Champions for 2017/18! Hayleigh Diggines, Jolene McCann & Karis Downie from Kilbowie Primary School were deserving recipients of our Active Schools Young Sports Stars of the Month Award in August 2018 for their commitment to the school netball team. Great to see our young people celebrated in this Year of Young People.
Area Update - Dumbarton Term 3 saw the culmination of the Dumbarton Area Netball League. After a closely fought league Aitkenbar Primary School were the winners with St Michael’s Primary finishing second. Both schools went on to represent the area at the West Dunbartonshire Primary Netball Final where they placed 4th and 5th respectively. Dumbarton Academy held their yearly Fit4Life Programme for S1 pupils. This week-long programme is an opportunity for local sports clubs to come into the school to promote their club and show pupils what opportunities are available to them in the local community. Sports clubs involved this year included Loch Lomond Rugby Club, Kirktonhill Tennis Club, Osaka Kwai Judo and the Vale of Leven Cricket Club. With the School Games coming to a close in June, Dumbarton Schools were well represented at the annual awards night at Clydebank Town Hall.
Knoxland finished third overall in the large school competition and for a second year running Dumbarton Academy were the winners in the secondary schools category. Dumbarton Academy also received the Spirit of the School Games award in recognition of the fantastic work they do to support leadership for young people. Our Netball sessions at the Meadow Centre on Tuesday evenings 6-7pm continue to prove popular, run in partnership with Dumbarton Harp Netball Club. This is a fun filled hour of Netball skills, drills and games for P5-S1 pupils. Pay and Play - just £2 per session. New members welcome!
St Martin’s Primary School Sports Committee
Area Update - Vale of Leven April – June once again saw fantastic WD School Games participation in the Vale of Leven area with our Football and Netball festivals attended by all nine local primary schools. Vale of Leven schools did exceptionally well at our annual School Games Awards night in June, with Gartocharn winning the Small School title and Levenvale finishing in third place. Christie Park won the medium school category and Vale of Leven Academy placed second in the secondary schools competition.
Both St. Martin’s and St. Mary’s Primary Schools in Alexandria created Pupil Sport Committees and St. Martin’s also achieved a sportscotland Silver School Sport Award laying the groundwork to go for their Gold Award during 2018-19.
St. Martin’s, St. Mary’s and Renton Primary Schools held Health and Wellbeing weeks in May with Active Schools arranging for a range of local sports clubs to deliver taster sessions to pupils, including Renton Aikido Club, Loch Lomond Rugby Club and Dance OFF Academy.
New parent volunteers from our Active Schools recruitment drive started in St. Mary’s Primary School delivering lunchtime Mini-Movers clubs to P1-4 pupils from April, which were very popular.
Gartocharn Sports Superstars organised lunchtime Rugby, Running and Dance Activities for the whole school in a 3 week rotation which proved extremely popular and was pupil led with staff supervision.
Three girls from St. Martin’s were selected to be mascots at the Scotland v Belarus Women’s Football World Cup Qualifying Match in June which was a fantastic experience for them.
Braydon Downs & Callum Crumley from Christie Park Primary School and Skye Kane from Lennox Primary School were very deserving recipients of our Active Schools Young Sports Stars of the Month Award.
Measuring Impact
School in Focus Christie Park Primary School
Christie Park Primary School has seen a massive increase in participation over the last few years as a result of the school decided to have a key focus on health and wellbeing. In this time Christie Park has also achieved the sportscotland Gold School Sport Award. School staff have taken an active role in extra-curricular sports delivery providing more opportunities for the young people in the school to be physically active. Many of the staff have also participated in Active Schools CPD courses to upskill themselves. In the last 2 years the number of parent volunteers delivering extra-curricular clubs in Christie Park has dramatically increased and in the past year the school have started a weekly “Fit Family session in the evening which involves parents participating in physical activity and healthy eating sessions with their children. In the past 2 years pupil attendances at breakfast, lunchtime, after-school and evening sessions, has more than doubled from 3,104 to 7,164. In each of the last 2 years, almost 90% of the school roll of 270 children have participated - which is fantastic. The school has excellent involvement from local sports clubs, varying from one-off taster days to regular curricular and extra-curricular sessions. Leadership roles for young people are promoted and they have a sports committee which meets every month that plays an active role in promoting sport and have an input into what sports are delivered as afterschool clubs and also in curriculum time. The young leaders receive training at the beginning of the school year where they learn how to structure a coaching sessions and gain some ideas of games and drills which they then deliver to the younger pupils of the school. A huge amount of credit must go to Mrs. Campbell, Principal Teacher who goes above and beyond to ensure that every child has an opportunity to participate.
PARTICIPATION In this section… Club Links A look at some of our school to club pathways
Summer Attainment Camps Focusing on our summer sports camps run in collaboration with the council’s Education, Learning and Attainment Department.
WD School Games A look back at theSchool Games 2017-18.
Club Links Vale of Leven Cricket Club A key priority for the Active Schools team is to develop strong pathways between the schools and the sports clubs in the local community to enable more children and young people to participate in sport beyond the school gates. We have continued to work with local sports clubs this year, coordinating extra-curricular clubs, taster sessions and festivals. Our school-club links raise the profile of community clubs within schools, and we believe this is the best way for school to club links to be made. Children and young people are much more likely to get involved with a club in their local community if they have had a taster of the sport and know the sports coaches from the club.
A particularly strong link we have developed is with Vale of Leven Cricket Club and this partnership continues to go from strength to strength. During this past academic year, over 1,500 pupils took part in curriculum-time taster cricket sessions across Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven delivered by volunteers from the club. Vale of Leven Cricket Club then kindly hosted a participation festival in June where over 80 Primary 5-7 pupils came along for a fun filled morning of cricket games and skills stations. The feedback was great from all involved and we look forward to the festival running again in 2019, however this time as part of the WD School Games. Each school who attends with gain 10 participation points – a great addition to the school sport calendar for 2018-19!
Club Links Glasgow Fever Basketball Club Glasgow Fever Basketball Club is an established club with the capacity to expand, increasing the opportunities for young people to play basketball. Clydebank was the perfect community for the club to work with and build on the existing schools Basketball programme This partnership offers an extensive programme for schools and the community. Glasgow Fever deliver a curricular and extra-curricular programme across all Clydebank primary schools, to multiple age groups throughout the year. In 2017, through the partnership, the very first School of Basketball in Clydebank was established at Clydebank High School. The School of Basketball is
funded through the CashBack for Communities initiative, a Scottish Government programme that uses the proceeds of crime to invest in Scotland's future. The School of Basketball is a huge opportunity for young people, encouraging them to remain in school through positive experiences in sport and hopefully advance them in their education to have bright and successful futures. Alongside the School of Basketball, Glasgow Fever have since appointed a Basketball Development Officer for the region to expand the excellent work already taking place in Clydebank and increase the opportunities for young people in Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven.
Summer Attainment Camps This summer, Active Schools once again worked in partnership with the council’s Education, Learning & Attainment Department to provide summer holiday multi-sport camps in some of our most deprived communities. West Dunbartonshire is one of the Scottish Government’s Attainment Challenge authorities and as a result receives a large amount of investment. The Scottish Attainment Challenge is about achieving equity in education, which can be achieved by ensuring every child has the same opportunity to succeed and targeting those children facing barriers. Launched in February 2015, it focuses on improving activity in Literacy, Numeracy and Health - and Health & Wellbeing, which is where Active Schools fit in. Funded as one of the council’s attainment projects, we organised a total of seven camps, spread across the local authority during the school summer holidays. The camps ran in a number of deprived areas over a two-week period and were open to P1-7 pupils to participate in a fun filled activity week, free of charge. These summer sports camps were a big success resulting in a total of 700 Primary 1-3 attendances and 400 Primary 4-7 attendances. We look forward now to running similar camps in Easter 2019.
WD School Games 2017-18 Round-up
It was another very strong year for our West Dunbartonshire School Games project, which has continued to develop and increase participation by schools since its creation in 2015. This year’s calendar of school sport events involved some 78 competitions and festivals across 14 different sports, with attendances this year reaching a high of 6,000. Out of the 78 competitions that took place during 2017-18, seven of these sports culminated in finals to crown the West Dunbartonshire School Games Champions: Basketball, Golf, Netball, Rugby, Sportshall Athletics, Swimming and Tennis. There were also two cross country events where the winners were announced on the day. Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to our champions for 2017-18.
